Chai was pacing along the walls of the cove, not particularly seeking anyone out, but excited at the prospect of numerous litters existing within the Tribe. If her own family was shattered into pieces, she could at least find some joy in the happiness of others. It was a far cry from her depressed, wandering state of late.

And so she nosed around, quiet in the early morning air. A gull flew overhead and she regarded it briefly, wondering what gull tasted like. She wasn’t starving but she hadn’t quite been taking care of herself as she should have.

Never the matter, onward she nosed, strolling around bends of the cove, just enjoying the spring air, the crispness of morning.

Mahalo was following a crab. It was a little brown crab, speckled with dots of various other colors and it was creeping along the beach - quite a ways up from the water. She had never seen nor met a crab before. It scuttled along and Mahalo followed after.

Her face was a very serious, interested expression. What exactly was that thing? Mahalo had seen and met a whole bunch of interesting wildlife on the beach since mama had let them be out of the den all day. It was a new adventure all the time.

She paced after the small, many legged creature. Her head tilted from one side to the other, trying to reason through what exactly it was? She hadn’t gotten close enough to give it a very good sniff yet - it always scuttled faster when she got closer. She wondered if she could eat it. She failed to notice the tawny colored adult coming from the opposite direction.

It didn’t take her very long to spot the young wolf scuttling after what looked to be a crab, and without hesitation, Chai was headed toward the kid, a soft smile marked on her face. “Don’t get too close to crabs or they might pinch your nose off,” she called lightly, a twinkle in her eye.

It’d been too long since she’d interacted with a young pup and she missed it so. With several known litters scattering the coast, she’d expected to run into a few more frequently, particularly as they grew older, but this girl still seemed rather young to be out and about like she was.

One question at a time, though. Chai knew all too well how quickly things could get complicated if you threw five questions at a kid. At least, that was how she remembered her own parenting, brief as it felt. She’d been there for their younger days, like this pup, and that accounted for something at least.

A strange voice pulled the pups attention up. The crab scuttled on and she debated between meeting this new wolf and following the crab more. She glanced around as if mama might appear to tell her if it was okay or not. She hadn’t met anyone without mama in a long time. Neither Kalea nor Arashi were here either to help her decide.

She flicked her gaze between crab and wolf, crab and wolf, finally settling on wolf and letting the crab escape, for today at least. She stayed where she was, more wary of this wolf since she was alone. “Whooo?” She asked with a tiny, skeptical voice. Mama was always telling her to say ‘please’ though when she said things or asked for things. “Please,” she added on.

Who, the pup asked, and Chai’s expression softened for it. Such a simple question for such a small thing, and for a moment, Chai just beamed down at the girl.

“Chai,” she returned simply. “Who?” She paused, leaving room for the girl’s answer. “I am living around here for a while.”

She didn’t know if the kid would understand the full of it, but she was trying her hardest to remain simple, comforting in tone. Because damn it all the hell, her past excluded, she lived to interact with children.

The please was an adorable afterthought that Chai let fall to her own returned answer, smile marked across her face.

Mahalo wagged her tail tentatively at the warmer expression from this stranger. Maybe it was okay even if mama wasn’t around to confirm who this was. “Chai,” she repeated softly, getting used to the new name. The nice lady asked the same question in response and Mahalo smiled. Mama had explained about ‘introductions’ before. “Mahalo,” she said proudly.

“Live here with mama and sis’ers,” Mahalo replied. She was getting good at these conversation type things. She took another little step closer to the new wolf. She wondered how many others were around here that she might meet. There had been lots of guests around their den, but this was a new wolf. Were there a lot of others? Maybe Mahalo had now met everyone ever and they could all be her friends who lived here.

The pup repeated her name and Chai simply beamed down at her, letting the girl process it all. She’d missed this feeling, the contentedness, the joy of young life. Mahalo, the girl pronounced, and Chai repeated it back softly. “It’s nice to meet you, Mahalo.”

That the girl had sisters was a nice note, and while Chai wasn’t entirely familiar with the rest of the pack here, she imagined the mother was laid-back enough to let her child wander much like she imagined Pace and the rest of the pack to be. It was a relief, truly.

“Where are your sisters?” she asked after a moment, looking around the pup in dramatic fashion. She certainly didn’t want her straying too far, so perhaps guiding her back home would do.

After trying to learn to fish, again, and failing at it, again, Jote decided that fishing straight up wasn’t for her. She’d leave the task to the others in the Tribe and focus her energy on the things she knew she could do. Perhaps she’d become a master fisherman in time, but definitely not anytime soon.

Jote had been wandering all up and down the beach patrolling and simply sight-seeing to get to know her new home. Hanging around with Kumar was fun, but he’d since left and she hadn’t seen him since her second failed fishing attempt. But she’d find something to entertain herself. She always did.

Speaking of entertaining, she soon spotted a familiar black fuzzy blob as she came in from the shoreline to the network of caves hiding in the coves. Immediately her tail began wiggling behind her as she started prancing near Mahalo.

As she came closer, another wolf appeared - this one lighter, creamy in color - who had apparently been hidden by the curve of a rock. She grinned brightly before coming up behind Mahalo and quickly nudging her booty with her nose. “Boop,” she said in sudden greeting, intentionally trying to surprise the pup.

Mahalo smiled and edged another step closer to this new wolf. She was liking this lady. She wondered if her mama knew her - or if this lady knew here mama. Well, mama knew everything forever, so of course she had to know this wolf.

She tilted her head at the question about her sisters. Where? Well, here, somewhere around, probably. Mahalo hadn’t seen them in a bit, she’d gotten busy following that crab around. “Sis’ers are…” She paused, how did she explain what she didn’t really have words for?

While trying to figure out the appropriate description she was too caught up in thoughts of her limited vocabulary that she did not hear the wolf creeping up behind her. When a nose poked at her rump and a voice made a sound near her the pup leaped forward with a frightened squeak.

She rushed towards the new wolf and tried to scurry underneath Chai’s belly, only turning herself around to see what it was when she felt securely hidden behind an adult. It wasn’t a big scary monster that had poked her though, it was her friend Jote. She tilted her head with concern, but then her tongue lolled out happily.

Chai had noted the approach of the other wolf earlier than the pup had, but she’d noted the wolf away to someone from the Tribe, someone safe. So when she waltzed up and booped the girl, Chai had expected an entirely different reaction.

When the pup crawled under her, it left her with a sensation she hadn’t felt in some time, some strange motherly instinct that kicked into gear more easily than she’d expected of herself. Though it lasted only a moment for the kid was in no real danger. The wolf approaching was harmless, even if she was a total stranger.

With a gentle nudge Chai pushed the kid, hoping she’d tip back into shape before looking up at the older wolf. “It’s okay,” she murmured to the pup softly before looking back up and greeting the stranger with a gentle smile. “Hello.” Her voice was soft as ever, eyes searching for some indication that there was no malice here.

Unfortunately, little Mahalo didn’t elicit the reaction that Jote had hoped for. She expected the pup to twirl around, see it was Jote, and start trying to play-fight her. Instead, she tucked tail and ran straight towards the creamy wolf in front of her. She frowned.

“I’m sorry, Mahalo, I was just trying to-” Scare her? Because it worked. “Poke some fun at you,” she conceded, giving an apologetic smile.

The other female greeted her and Jote’s smile brightened. “Hi! I’m Jote, Thresher and a newer member of the Tribe!” That title would never get old and she would abuse it whenever possible. “Are you new to the Tribe, as well?” Her head tilted to the side curiously, though her posture was nothing less than friendly.

Her recognition of Jote and Chai’s soothing voice served to coax the pup back out from underneath the other wolf. She crept to stand beside one of Chai’s front legs to smile at Jote and then tilt her head up to smile as Chai as well. She liked both of these wolves and they were nice.

“Hello Hy-ote,” Mahalo replied, overemphasizing the other wolf’s name that she still had yet to master. Jote was then asking Chai a few questions, and Mahalo wasn’t overly interested in whatever the adults might be talking about, boring adult things probably.

Mahalo walked towards Jote, her little tail wagging and wanted to greet her friend in a more personal way. “Twibe….” Mahalo repeated, pondering the word. Had mama said that work before? Mahalo thought maybe she’d heard it. Was it important? The pup was trying to remember what it might mean exactly.

Dante could hear voices in the caves as he approached from outside, ears pricked forward to hear what was going on as he came closer. He was carrying an assortment of marigold and peppermint in his mouth, and the mint was strong enough to throw his sense of smell off somewhat. He could hear Chai’s voice, but otherwise he didn’t know who else was ahead of him as he neared the mouth of the cave.

There was something else in his jaws as well- a branch maybe half an inch thick and nearly as long as his tail, with a couple of thin green twigs and leaves branching off of it. He doubted there were many sticks on the beach- wasn’t the right environment for it- and he’d remembered how proud Yuna’s kid had been of her prize. So he’d brought another to add to her collection, not wanting to show up with herbs for Yuna and nothing for the pup who he’d spoken with. Didn’t seem right.

He saw that Chai wasn’t alone as he entered the mouth of the cave. There was someone else near her, a gray and white female- and a pup he recognized, standing nearer to Chai.

Looks li’e ya foun’ my frien’,” he said to Chai, his voice muffled by the vegetation he carried, and a little warmer than it might have been lately.

It felt a natural thing to have the pup leaning against her, and Chai wanted to scoop the kid up and cuddle her for all nature was telling her but she refrained, smiling down at the girl softly as the other wolf greeted her.

Jote, Thresher, which meant nothing to Chai but then most Tribe titles seemed personal so she didn’t question. “I, uhm,” she started, glancing down at the pup nestled against her leg fondly. “I wouldn’t say I’m a member of the Tribe but my mate is Pace’s brother so we’ve been staying here.” While he healed, she might have said, but he had healed so it felt a passing thing.

With a gaze at Jote, she smiled. “I’m Chai.” Simple as that, no title, just a natural roll of the tongue. But before she could add much more anyway, Dante had approached and she was staring up at him with all that he’d carried over in his mouth with a tilt of his head.

Friend, he called the pup against her, and she looked at him warmly, nodding. “I have. Mahalo, is it,” she said, looking down to the pup. It felt wholly natural standing near the pup, looking down at here, and for a moment, all her past woes fell to the side, for just a split moment as she smiled down at the pup.

Jote managed to coax Mahalo out from her hiding place near the other female and she watched the pup fondly as she toddled over to her. Naturally she descended to her stomach like she had last time she’d seen the little Seashell.

‘Twibe…’ The peppered wolf grinned at her. “That’s right! The Tribe is home,” she said, trying to use simple words so she was able to follow along well enough.

The girl’s attention was grasped by the cream-colored female, orange eyes lifting to meet hers as she introduced herself - apparently the mate of Pace’s brother, named Chai. “It’s nice to meet ya, Chai. I’m pretty new around here, so I guess I haven’t met Pace’s brother yet.” She lifted herself to sit back on her haunches.

Just then a very large, very dark wolf appeared, referring to Mahalo as his friend. Jote’s brow quirked at him, wondering who he was. For a very brief second, her eyes narrowed skeptically at him, a sort of jealousy overwhelming her then. His friend? How dare.

But the more she thought about it, the more she figured cute little pups would have a lot of friends. So, she guessed she’d let it slide, for now…

“Hi! Who are you?” She asked bluntly, though her tone remained just as cheery as it was before.

The adults talked but Mahalo remained focused on her goal, Jote’s nose. She waddled forward, taking exaggerated steps while her tongue hung out of the giant grin on her face. She took the last few steps at a trot and was then licking across Jote’s muzzle and nose repeatedly for a short time.

She looked up as a familiar voice called. Mahalo remembered! “Dante!” She chirped, skipping away from Jote to her other friend so that she could press into his front leg in way of greeting.

Finally, when Chai said her name again Mahalo turned her attention away another time and padded back to the original wolf. She wrapped between the light female’s front legs so that she could stand looking at the rest of the ground from beneath Chai’s belly again. Her tail wagged and she smiled at all of the wolves he knew and liked.
