Momo had been woken up by loud noises. Uttering a small yelp, she blinked her blue-amber eyes open. What was that? It was late, she could tell from the sky, but she didn’t think she could fall back asleep after that fright. She whined quietly in her throat. Another clap sounded, and she quaked. It was loud! Hiding behind the large form of her mother, she peeked out from behind her slowly, wondering where it was coming from.

Outside was very very dark, and raining, She could hear it on the sand. It still sounded like a lot of little footfalls. The sounds would have calmed her if only it wasn’t so loud. She crouched, still in her hiding place. Were Ashi and Ncle Dahn okay? She hoped they were hiding like her. The unknown was scary, so she didn’t even think of going out and looking for them just yet. Maybe after it stopped.

Another loud nose. Momo huddled closer to Ma. It was all she could think of for now. She flattened her ears and whined, again. Someone help!

Most others would seek shelter from storms. Most others would cower at the loud claps of thunder or bright flashes of lightning. Most others might even cry and shake until the storm was long gone.

Jote was not like most others.

Jote relished in the demands of mother nature. Also, she’d yet to be struck by lightning so she had no reason to fear it at this point in time.

The feeling of rain rattling against her face was oddly soothing despite the tenacity with which it fell, soaking her pelt as she sat on the wet sand that was slowly working to eat her body whole with every centimeter she sunk.

Lightning flashed brightly against her orange eyes as she stared out at the marvel striking across the ocean. If she happened to get struck this time, at least she’d die happy.

The storm had woken Pace, too.

Not because of the noise. It didn’t bother her in that way. But she loved a good storm. Thunderstorms in particular had a place in her heart and she lay there, listening, aware of the rumbles as they had grown closer and closer and…

She missed Vincent. They had shared many storms together.

Momo whined, though, and even with the racket of the rain and the distractions otherwise, a mother’s ears could not miss that.

“Momo…” she said softly, hoping the others would remain asleep.  She had seen the shape of a wolf just outside in that last flash, and she had half a mind to go out there, too.

“Don’t be scared, darling.”

Splash wasn’t woken by the crash and boom of the thunder, like her sister. The pounding rain on the sand and the warm comfort of her family was enough to keep her quiet and snuggled close, until Momo shook beside her. The dark puppy’s ear twitched at her whimpers and the Seashell woke with a bleary grumble, first throwing a glance at Gull to ensure she was still there, then checking in on Mo by poking her with her snout. It was just rain, right? Rain was good. The bad rain was silent, so this had to be the good rain because Splash could hear it. So why was Mo whining?
Another crash and rumble from the skies answered the youngster’s silent question, her muscles tensing at this strange new noise. It sounded like it was going to shake the very cave they slept in apart. Mo’s worry made sense now, and Splash responded with flopping the nearest forepaw over her smaller sister’s back and rumbling out her most ferocious puppy-growl at whatever made this horrible sound. Her teeth didn’t bare, she simply growled, a more adorable little trill in her chest and throat than an actual growl. But in the sleepy eyed child’s mind, she was simply terrifying, growling in hackles-lifted fear in response to every deep sky-rumble thing.

When her mother whispered her name, Momo raised her head. Did the noises wake her too? She blinked her murky amber eyes at her, and snuggled into her warm fur a bit more. “Wat dat, Ma? Is loud.” She made sure she was whispering too, but her voice trembled, still scared despite her Ma’s words.

Then, Pash was up, giving the pale pup a snout-poke. She stayed next to Ma, but watched her sister. Then, another rumble sounded, prompting her dark sister to wrap a paw around her shoulder, growling. Momo flattened her ears again, but felt better cause of her family. Less upset.

The cracking outside was too loud for Jote to hear any commotion going on inside the cave behind her. Even if she tried to hear any other sounds, she was too entranced by the vision before her to do so.

After a short time, Jote began trying to count the span of time in between each bout of thunder. Sometimes it was three seconds in between, sometimes even as many as 6 or 7 seconds in between, and they were all sporadic. There was no pattern, not that she expected one. But maybe if she timed it right and went with her instincts…

BOOM! One. She took a deep breath.

Two. She held it.

Three. She opened her mouth, not really sure what she was doing.

Four. Feeling it was the right time, she unleashed her held breath of air in the form of a loud bark - an attempt to align her voice with another boom so she could feel all powerful. Except there was no boom, only a shrill Jote bark.

Five. BOOM! Jote’s lips formed a tight line in disappointment. Jote was displeased.

Splash stirred, too, and Pace pressed some of her own weight into one of her paws in the sand so she could reach behind her with her nose and nudge at her growing dark girl.  Tense, of course. They didn’t know they had so little to fear from a storm. They’d never been with their mother when she’d flew down the beach in the rain and the rumbles.

“That’s called Thunder, girls,” she said softly, not wanting to wake Gull on accident if the sweet thing was going to sleep through this.  “When it storms and rains, sometimes the sky lights up with lights even at night and the thunder is the noise you hear after.”

She didn’t know what caused it. She never would. But she did know it made her heart sing.

To that end, she was shifting up to her paws, having heard the bark she now identified as Jote. “If you want to be brave with momma, you girls can come with me and you can see. I promise, even though it’s loud you will be safe with me. It’s just like a big sky howl.”

She started off slowly towards the front of the cavern, hoping they would be bold enough to follow as offered.

Mo seemed to relax a bit, and Splash felt pride. She had protected her sister from the scary noises! And Ma nosed her, which made Splash feel safer too. She seemed unconcerned, after all. “Th.” What an odd syllable. “Thhhhunder? Thhhunder.” And the sky, lighting up at night and making howls that reverberated in Splash’s chest. Wow. That sounded crazy cool.

Ma offered them a trip outside to see these lights in the sky and the sky-howls, but Sp;lash eyed her with mild concern. The supposed ‘thunder’ was really loud. Then again, Ma said they’d be safe with her, and she’d never lied about that before. And bravery, she mentioned that too and that was enough to convince the little black wolf. “Go see!” The pup whisper-yipped, trying to be quiet but excited now by the prospect of something new, of an adventure. But her paw over Mo’s back stopped her. Her sister should come too-Gull seemed asleep still but she didn’t want to leave behind her smaller sister. “Mo go see….thhhhunder?” She murmured as she removed her dark paw cutting a swath of black across the cream fluff of Momo’s shoulders. That new word still took her second to figure out with her tongue, but she got it after a moment.
‘Th’ was far from her new favorite syllable though. Too sticky, for sure.

Momo’s brightening eyes rose when her mother begun to speak, drinking in her words. Ma wasn’t scared at all, which prompted the child to also calm down a little. If Ma wasn’t scared, then there wasn’t anything to be scared about. Thats what she thought, at least.

“T… under? Thhhhhunder?” The noises were hard to say, but now that they had a name, it was better. Storms, light, noise. It was more of an explanation, and she sort of knew more words. She wasn’t sure if she liked them, still. They were loud.

The girl frowned at the offer, staring out at the storm. Ma said they’d be safe. And she kind of wanted to go with her cause staying inside meant she’d be lonely again. “Mommmo be bave.” Nodding to herself, Momo decided to go with her mother, and sister. “Go see.” A grateful lick was given to Pash’s ear. With the weight of her paw removed, she got to her shaky paws.

“Come, Pash?” She was still a bit scared. But she’d still be brave and follow Ma.

Pace watched her girls soak in the information she’d given them. They were understandably scared. Loud noises were a lot for little puppies, especially when they didn’t know what was going on. But they couldn’t be scared forever.  Pace needed them to see this.

She stood up and moved around carefully, reaching down to sniff at Gull. Still sleeping. No reason to wake her.  “Gull will be safe and warm here. We’ll be back to join her in sleeping in just a moment,” she said in a soft murmur. “Just a little trip outside, okay?  I think auntie Jote is out there, too.”

Yeah, Jote got to be auntie now, too, in spite of zero familial relation.  ‘We should go say hi and look at the lights bravely.”

And with that, her head low and her steps slow as she urged her daughters along, she started out towards the edge of the caves.

((Either of you puppers are welcome to get us up to the mouth of the caves if they choose to follow mom!))

“Pash go see.” She confirmed with a small grin, rising to her paws to scramble out of the little dip to arrive by her momma’s side, eager to see the night-lights and the sky howl. “Trip to see thhhhunder, trip to see lights. Trip trip.” Jote was a new word, though. A new wolf, the way Ma talked about the stranger. “Who Auntie Jo, Ma?” Splash hummed, ears pricked.

While she was ready to see the lights, it was still rather slow going, since she often stopped to check on Momo and growl after a rumble of thunder. It was more of a game now, though, rather than an attempt to protect her sister.
They did reach the mouth of the cave, though, however long it took, their arrival signaled by a flash of light shining into the cave from the entrance.
Fur standing on end, her blue eyes flitted up to the tall form of her mother. “Night lights?!” It was the most plausible explanation, right?

Momo nodded, “Good, yes.” It would be better with Pash. Following her sister, the pale pup blinked up at her Ma, drinking in all the new words. Glancing down at Ull for a moment, she decided she was pleased with leaving her behind. She was sleeping and waking her up meant she might be all upset about the thhunder like she was. So being asleep was fine. “Jus’ a momnt, Ull.” They’d be back soon!

The girl smiled, distracted, at her sisters big words. She was a good word speaker. “Tip to see thhhhunder, fun.” Even more words from Ma, who was a betterer word speaker than Pash. The bigger you were, the better you were at speaking words, she figured. “Ntie Jo?” She hadn’t heard of that one before.

“Say hi, Ntie Jo,” that sounded good! Momo trotted along slowly, content. She was alright with being pushed by her Ma sometimes as well. The thunder wasn’t as bad now, though it did make her jump sometimes. But it wasn’t as bad as it used to be.

Then, she reached the cave entrance, and stared up into the sky. The sun was gone, replaced with a smaller white thing, and lots of little shiny things. “Oooohhhhh.” They were nice to look at. Much nicer than looking at the sun. That hurt.

The thunder still rumbled and the lightning still struck randomly, but Jote was absorbing every minute of it. With every crash and every flash she found herself sinking further into an air of comfort.

She still had no idea Pace and two of her pups were in the caves somewhere behind her. She sat happily in the wet sand, allowing the rain to pat down her coat. Probably made her look like a wet rat at this point, but occasionally she’d shake her coat out to look a little more…normal.

Then she tried barking with the thunder again. And again, she failed miserably.

((SORRY I’M THE WORST RIGHT NOW))

Pace grinned at her daughters at they took in the sight of the stormy night. “Thunder can light the sky, day or night!” she informed their curiosity. “Actually, when you can see it, it’s called lightning, and the noise that comes with the lightning is called thunder.  See, listen,” and just several seconds after that, the thunder that Jote failed to bark with rolled through.

“It’s part of a storm, sometimes.  Usually when it rains and there are clouds in the sky. I think it’s the most beautiful thing,” she said, and grinned when she got good look at the back of her friend.

“Jote!” she called, wondering if she would be heard.

OOC: No big deal <3
Ah, yes. Night lights, or day lights. But the day already had lights, so she liked it better already at night, she quickly decided. And hey! There was another wolf!! Sitting out in the rain and the thunder!
That was brave, even braver than Splash and Momo. Splash’s chest thrummed with another happy growl at the thunder, throwing her mother a mischievous, prideful grin. Yeaaahhhh, Splash was pretty cool, huh, growling like the thunder was. “Bayootifull?” She echoed contemplatively, rolling her mother’s big word over her tongue and around in her mouth for the heck of saying it, not necessarily asking her what it meant, but rather testing it out for further use.
Oh, and now Momma was calling out to the wolf in the rain, Jote, she said. That must be Auntie Jo, then. “Awny Joooo.” Splash chirped with a wiggle of her tail, glancing to her creamy, smaller sister now to check on her.
