The big brown dude was.. not as aggressive as originally thought. Counterpoint, he wasn’t as nice either, but it really wasn’t anything he couldn’t put up with. Probably. Really, it wasn’t the easiest to tell someone’s personally after knowing them for, what, an hour? But from what he could tell he seemed alright enough. Maybe a little more short-tempered than Ancell was used to.

And he still needed to figure out a way to give his actual name. Maybe he’d find ants here.

He’d followed the yearling silently, but that was to be expected. When they’d crossed into pack territory, his ears drew back uneasily, but the stranger-not-stranger seemed to know where he was going, and so Ancell didn’t stop. Besides, the place looked.. rather pretty, really. With trees and water and full of wolf-scents.

Altair really didn’t care much for talking, anyway, so as they walked, he relished in the quietness of it. The moment they reached the pack lands, the yearling didn’t take the time to howl for his sister. He didn’t want to risk calling a member of the Cadre and having to talk to them, instead. He’d been purposefully avoiding them because unlike this mute guy, they could talk.

With his nose to the ground, Altair tried tracking his sibling. There was a hint of a smile on his face, but he did nothing to extinguish or strengthen it. It was just there.

If the guy was something, at least, he was far more quite than Ancell had expected him to be. It seemed like he hardly even remember Ancell was there. Which was.. not nice, really, because even though Ancell was used to being forgotten, he didn’t like being forgotten by people who had blantantly told him to follow them.

And he hadn’t even told him who they were looking for. He wouldn’t have even realised they were looking for someone if the brown boy didn’t have his nose so close to the ground. Ancell himself, he wasn’t sure if there were even others here. He hadn’t seen anyone.

Ancell picked up his pace, finding himself side by side with the brown yearling. Were they just going to walk in silence forever?

His nose stayed down, hoping his sister wasn’t busy with a hunt or whatever the heck she did in her free time. It was ironic how he didn’t even know what his own sister did during her leisure time. He’d been so busy doing what he did best - absolutely nothing - that he’d never given much thought to what others did. It hadn’t been worth his time but, comically, doing jackshit was.

“Rota,” he whispered, trying to get her attention.

Rota had left Altair alone. She knew their routine by now, as weird as it was. Maybe they were just never destined to be a normal family. Whatever a “normal” family meant. All her life it was the same. Parents leave, siblings leave. Entire packs splinter away until there’s nothing left but an empty meadow.

Faithful never came from that thing with that guy, Rab had just up and disappeared one day. She couldn’t loose Altair, too. She just couldn’t.

So she waited for him. She didn’t encroach on his space, didn’t ask where he was going, didn’t follow him. Just waited, anxiously, in a clump of bushes at what were once borders but just smelt empty like everything else. She waited until she caught his scent on the breeze and heard him whisper her name.

When she extracted herself from the bushes she saw him in the distance. He wasn’t alone. Someone small and pale was with him, and for a moment her heart leapt into her throat. Had he somehow managed to find Faithful or Rab? She took a few eager steps toward them, but the smell was all wrong.

Altair was — surprisingly — in the company of a complete stranger.

Rota’s tail hung limp at her heels as she gave a low woof, her eyes narrowed suspiciously.

It was strange, to think of someone else as quiet. Ancell watched intently, brown eyes round and shining, as the boy tracked something - or someone - down, sniffing the air in hopes he’d locate the scent the other seemed so intent on following. There were many scents, though, and singling one out when he didn’t know them was nearly impossible. Still, that didn’t stop him from trying.

Ancell had wanted the stranger to say something, but when he did speak it was not simply words- it was a name, and it took Ancell a moment to register it. He glanced around, ears suddenly perking. If he had called it, surely, there was someone around to hear it other than him. And- there, there was another brown shape moving in the distance, if he squinted he could see it. The shape gave a light woof, and in response Ancell gave a few soft wags of his tail, unsure if they’d be visible at the distance.

He started the conversation this time, a trace of excitement on the rare smile he held. “I found a mute,” Altair announced, almost proud sounding for his catch of the day.

It wasn’t like Altair to be excited about anything anywhere. This, however, was something special. He had found them a little treat, a distraction from all the hell in their life. This male would never come as near as what Tempest had once meant to him, but they could always try. Altair could assume what the guy wanted to say, which meant that Altair could give this guy any personality he wanted him to have—and he loved that idea. This fellow could be a male version of Tempest. His tail even started to sway at the thought.

“Its name is Shell.”

| do you guys mind if we backdate this to late spring?

“I found a mute.”

No “hey, what’s going on” or even an “hi, I’m back”.

Rota sighed as she somewhat reluctantly closed the distance between them, her gaze flickering over the the pale stranger, brows furrowed. ”You mean he doesn’t speak?” She lowered her voice quizzically. Just because he couldn’t speak doesn’t mean he couldn’t hear. ”Why’d you bring him here? And how’d you know his name is Shell?”

ooc;; I don’t mind! : 0 but I don’t know how possible it’d be, since i brought Ancell in in early summer?

His name was not Shell, and he was not an It, but it was close enough, he supposed. Ancell made a face at the words, but no attempt to correct them, instead taking the chance to study the girl. She was smaller than the boy, but bigger than him, and didn’t seem all that too eager to be there. Suckers. He felt a little bad for her, really, but the way she eyed him didn’t exactly make him feel like any attempt to make her feel better would be welcome, despite how he wanted to try and cheer her up.

Gee, he had to work on that.

Now that they had stopped walking, Ancell took the chance to sit down, looking at the couple with a faint smile. Alright, it was.. a little awkward, but he’d make do. Meeting new people was always awkward!

As long as you don’t have any threads in early summer stating that it was his first time stepping in the valley, you’re good to have threads that are backdated to before he was made~
I’m totes cool with backdating this thread, and the previous one with just Ancell and Altair to late spring :)

He squinted momentarily as Rota corrected him to… exactly what he’d just said. If he didn’t speak, he was a mute, that was the word for it. Altair chose to ignore the correction.

Rota lowered her voice, but Altair saw no reason to do so. The guy was mute, it didn’t matter what they said. “Thought we could make a friend. We don’t have to worry about him hurting our feelings or anything because he’s a mute.” They needed that. He and Rota needed someone to distract them, to have as a friend.

“He showed me a shell and after many attempts at getting the right word, he nodded at Shell.” He turned to look at the white wolf, waiting for him to nod.

She eyed Altair, raising her brow at his explanation. His explanation that didn’t make any sense.

There was so many things she could question but when she opened her mouth to do so, she caught herself and simply sighed. It was no use arguing with Altair. Whatever made him happy, she supposed.

Rota pulled her head back to glance toward the pale wolf — Shell. He was sitting down, smiling, looking a little out of place. Poor guy. He seemed to be putting up with Altair like a champ.

”So listen,” she murmured after a moment of silence, turning back to Altair. ”There’s something I wanted to talk to you about.” Rota paused briefly, searching his pale, icy blue eyes. Sif, Mom, and Altair always had such pretty eyes. Dad had said her eyes were pretty, too, but.

”I think we should leave. You wanted to go back to the meadow, right? So let’s go.”

There was nothing for them here. The Cadre was already so small. They couldn’t keep imposing. If… when Dad came back, he would know where to find them, surely. They could even bring his new friend if that made him feel better. If he even wanted to come, that was.

Gabe gave permission to skip Ancell this round :)

Rota steered the conversation away from Shell. Did she not like him? She socialized with almost every wolf she met—except for those who trespassed—and usually got along with them. Why wasn’t she being accepting of the mute?

He listened, lips a hard line as she spoke. Did he want to go back to the meadow? He did, truly. Altair yearned to go back home, to lie in the fields and look up at the clouds. With all the trees here, it was difficult to see all of the clouds through them.

Just to seem as though he wasn’t desperate, he let the silence linger for a moment, acting as though many thoughts were running through his mind to weigh his options. “I have no problem with that,” he said finally. Altair hid what little excitement he had, or at least tried to, but the little twitch of his tail and small tug of the lip may not have gone unnoticed. He was dying to get out of here.

“Shell, we’re moving,” Altair announced, already turning in the direction of the meadow. He couldn’t stand being around here any longer. The clouds. The memories. Home. He missed his home.

Really, the last thing Ancell wanted was to get caught up in family drama. Well, he supposed, he wouldn’t get caught up in it if he couldn’t really participate, but it still was not fun to watch. So when the girl - Rota - aimed to start what was clearly a family conversation, Ancell made a face and belatedly hoped neither her nor the other boy had seen it.

But they weren’t looking at him. They were too focused on eachother, talking, thinking, and Ancell tilted his head as he tried to follow the conversation. No such luck, though. He was missing too many pieces, and finally the white boy gave up, looking away and to the area around them. It was.. pretty, he supposed. Felt fresh. He was a little surprised they hadn’t encoutered more wolves, since he could smell pack.

And then his faux-name was being called, and Ancell turned back to the brown yearling, blinking a couple of times before standing. Uh. Okay. He was a little lost, but he’d go. It wasn’t like he had anything better to do anyway. Sending a glance towards Rota, Ancell cast her a small, embarrassed smile.

Altair didn’t argue. She would’ve been surprised if he had. But her mind swirled with anxious thoughts and so she merely nodded vaguely when he finally agreed.

With her brow still furrowed in thought and her face a rare, pensive mask, Rota glanced idly toward Shell when Altair called out. Their eyes met and he offered her a strange smile, one she didn’t return. Her gaze softened somewhat as she stared at him, however, and her sides heaved a heavy sigh as she wordlessly turned to follow her brother.

Home.

The word felt foreign and meaningless on her tongue.

Without Dad, “home” just seemed like some sick joke.

The boy kept moving forward. He hid the excitement in the way he moved, but the small smile remained right where it belonged. It was a good thing he wasn’t facing anyone anymore.
