((Phone post! Please excuse the poor quality!))

Rufus was gone. Mari was gone. Solomon had vanished, and Orion was dead. It didn’t take much insight to see that the Evergreen Wolves weren’t doing so well lately in terms of, well, surviving. And it didn’t take much insight to see how damaging it was to the few remaining members of the pack. With dwindling numbers and a sea of pups, could things possibly get any worse?

Apparently so.

It was just that morning when Alina left; leaving her pack and pups behind with little word as to where she was going or why; but having only one point being made clear. She wasn’t coming back.

That left the EW with three adults, 10 children, and a very, very, angry Achilles who had spent multiple hours after the revelation angrily stomping about the territory in an attempt to make sense of it all. The stomping resided into a walk, then the walk resided into a crash, and then the crash led to the present time, in which Achilles was perched upon a rock in the smaller clearing contemplating her options. Or lack of options, rather. There was no way in hell they’d be able to survive as a pack under these circumstances, And Achilles knew that. But there really weren’t a lot of ways to resolve this, and while Achilles was completely open to suggestions, it was highly unlikely that any of them would end up working out in the longrun.

That didn’t change the need for a pack meeting, she supposed. Standing up upon the rock, she howled for the remainder of her Kin.

((Loose posting order. Each new round starts with Achilles.))

Rathbone had been hunting. Making himself do more. Hunting and patrolling served to be fairly good distractions. Except his mindless stroll during that thunderstorm. But the weather seemed to be clearing up and that was good. Temperatures were warming up.

He had yet to really notice the absence of the new guardian. Rathbone hadn’t really had any time to see her. He knew Orion’s death must have been hard on her, so he had not tried to reach out to her. Giving her space instead. He, too, had needed some space. Time to think properly. It was harder than he thought, to see the positives. But he tried this time. He wanted to try.

The vigil heard a howl. Achilles. With two rabbits and a weasel in his jaws, he picked up a lope to head over. His mouth was too full to announce him coming. Another meeting? Hopefully a more lighthearted one this time.

It wasn’t long until he emerged from the undergrowth, finding the ivory she-wolf. He dipped his head to her before placing his rather mighty catch on the ground. Rathbone felt… a little better.

Mintaka had been taking a nap. Romping around with Auberon had taken a ton of energy out of the Ray if sunshine.

Ears perked at a sudden call. Who was that? Mintaka didn’t recall a voice sounding like that. Therefore, the girl was very curious.

Rolling to her over grown feet, the child began to waddle towards the call. Who was making such a fuss at this time of day?

Letting a yawn out, Mintaka peered around for anyone. “Mother… Auberon?” She asked tilting her head. Where was everybody? She either wanted the warmth if her beloved creator or her best friend. At least, Mintaka called him that. Were they not the best of friends? She sure thought so.

Leas felt like a complete bundle of nerves for almost the entirety of the morning. Alina had left, and well, what did that even mean for the pack? It had seemed like she was leaving leaving, but her pups remained here. They were too small to travel anywhere certainly. The four little pups were the same age as Leas’ own children, and no matter what Leas might personally want to do, she knew she couldn’t leave with her children, but she certainly couldn’t leave without them either.

That hadn’t held Alina here though. Leas lifted her head at the sound of a howl and turned towards the entrance. She was sure there would be plenty of time to fret terribly over all of the pups at a future time, at the moment she needed to talk to the only remaining members of the pack.

Leas clambered up the entrance and out into the bright clearing right in front of the caverns. For all of the horribleness of the moment, at least the weather was pleasant enough. She spotted her mate first, and the little golden pup she had met before. Then she looked up to Achilles perched just above them.

Leas didn’t even know who to turn to first. She wanted to go to her mate and press into his fur, she wanted to comfort the poor golden pup who was likely unknowingly without either parent, and she wanted to stand close to her newest friend here. She tried to place herself in the middle of all of them and glanced between them. “Is this about Alina?” She asked the white wolf finally.

She was hungry.

She may not have ventured from the cave at all if it weren’t for that fact. She could not quite remember when she had eaten last. Mother had been gone for a long time, it seemed. Hours? A day? Sorrel tried to remember, but she was terribly sleepy, and the napping and the dreaming she had done made all the time go sideways and bendy.

But. It had been a long time, and she was hungry.

And so she’d spent some time toddling around the caves, looking for someone, anyone, who might be able to help her on this. When she heard a voice, she followed its call, hoping maybe someone out there would have some food for her, or some insights as to whereabouts her momma was.

It wasn’t exactly the howl itself that drew Auberon from the now familiar darkness of the cave into the sunshine, but rather that while he loitered about near the pool - splashing a paw gently in the water - he turned in time to see both his best-friend-forever and his mama going outside at the sound.

He tilted his head, waiting a single moment, and then pranced after them. Auberon was not aware enough to have caught the somewhat off feeling the other adults might have been feeling. He was only intent on playing with his friend more, or perhaps having Ma feed him for a while.

Auberon trotted up the incline and into the grassy, sunny clearing outside. He only remembered this place in a dim, tired portion of his mind. Auberon had caught Mintaka’s voice asking for him as he emerged and he went to the golden pup first, pressing his nose into her side gently and snuffling at her fur. “Minta, hi,” he whispered as he pressed his side against hers. He looked across all three adults, what was happening?

When she saw Mama leaving, Adhara couldn’t help the compulsion to follow her. She heard the howl but thought it was lart of her dream. The movements were what roused her fully, blinking tiredly as she toddled after her mother, out into the sunlight, wincing as it hit her eyes.

She spotted a few already gathered - her father, her brother and Mintaka, Sorrel, and a puffy white wolf. Her brother and Mintaka were most familiar. Sniffing, Adhara dragged herself toward the two and pushed her face against her brother’s back, mumbling inaudibly.

This had better be important.

Adler heard a howl, caught sight of other wolves headed for the entrance, and decided that he needed to be there too, whatever was going on. He was getting a little bolder with exploring, especially if he was following someone else. Then again, was it really exploring when he had been out here before, when they had first moved in? It had been a while since then though.

Once he caught up with them and emerged into the light, he was surprised to see that it wasn’t just his family here. There were Other Wolves. Sure, he had smelled some strange wolf-like scents around, and heard mysterious voices echoing through the caverns, but he hadn’t actually run into these other wolves yet. So he had thought they were just… invisible ghost wolves or something. That made perfect sense.

But here they were. There was a big wolf with white fur (whaaat) and two other pups that he didn’t know. He was frozen for a few moments as he stared at all of them, not knowing what to make of this. How could there be other wolves? Were they part of his family too? Was the white one the mother of the unknown pups? Was she his other mother?! Was she Ma’s Ma?! How come she wasn’t as big as Ma and Da? Maybe she was actually a big pup?

He finally scuttled closer to the others, peering suspiciously at the unfamiliar pups. “Who? Who dat? Who dat?!” he loudly asked no one in particular. Someone had to know. He needed answers.

Murphy answered the howl promptly. He didn’t want to wind up showing up late. He’d been patrolling around, subtly sniffing for Siberia, but that wasn’t Alina’s voice, so he had to make sure everything was okay right away.

He ran on three legs through the trees until he saw Achilles upon a rock, and clumsily skid to a halt near the others.

Is this about Alina? Leas asked.

Alarm went through him.

“What…is - oh. Something’s not okay, is it?” Murphy’s ears lowered. He looked around at all the pups. He swallowed.

As wolves began to make their way into the clearing, Achilles could feel her chest tighten more with each passing second. There was tension in the air, billowing through the crowd between pup and adult alike.

Is this about Alina?
“...Something’s not okay, Is it?”

Achilles nodded once at both comments, her eyes closing as she tried to swallow the gigantic lump in her throat. Alina had left. The eighth wolf to abandon the pack since the beginning of Spring. How were they going to survive this?

Finally, the woman let out a soft sigh before speaking, her voice tainted with both disappointment and anger. “You may be wondering why I’ve called you here,” She said, lifting her head slightly. “And I’m not the kind to beat around the bush. Our newly elected guardian, Alina, Has abandoned us and decided to leave her children here in her wake. With only four remaining adults among ten puppies, I believe it is time to make a difficult decision regarding the future of this pack.”

Achilles paused, taking a deep breath before continuing. “I already have some ideas, but I’m willing to open up the floor for your opinions before I voice my own.” The woman looked out upon the crowd. Could they tell that she was breaking? She wondered. Even so, Achilles had decided that the well-being of her family was more important than any mental tribulations she may be facing. It was easier to fake confidence than to let everyone down.

A number of pups spilled out of the caverns as well. Leas wasn’t sure if it was a good thing or not for all of the children to be here at this meeting. As she saw her own three pups coming out she wanted to scoop them all up close to her and keep them safe, but…safe from who she realized? Auberon went straight to Mintaka and pressed himself against his new friend; Adhara followed quickly after and attached herself to her dark brother. It was only Adler who even seemed to pause for a moment before asking who these wolves all were. Except, it was really only two strange adults. Leas didn’t feel nervous with Achilles; the white female had proven herself to be a friend and she had her own children. Even as Murphy appeared she didn’t feel the alarm that she might have before. He had stayed with the pack, he had been helping and living in the caverns for weeks now. She realized that while their pack was tiny, she trusted those that were here.

“Adler, this is your pack. They’re all kin, friends, do you understand baby?” She spoke quietly to the little timber boy, but loud enough she hoped her other children would hear and try to understand. She beckoned him close with a little smile and a nod of her head - she hoped their middle child had been making friends here as well as his siblings.

Achilles then spoke about the pack. Leas knew that Alina had left, and obviously the pups were still here. Achilles asked for ideas and spoke of difficult decisions. The first one seemed to be the four children that now were without a mother or father. “I-I’ll care for Alina’s pups. They’re the same age as my own, and they still need to be nursed and looked after, so they can join our family,” Leas spoke quietly, but she knew this was something she could do, would do. She had found a very deep love for her own pups and she could extend that to the others. “I-if you’re okay with them Rath?” She glanced at her mate, a hopeful if small smile on her face. She realized how many things he had caught and brought back for them. She knew it wouldn’t be easy but they could take care of all of these pups together, they’d find a way.

She glanced at the two who had already come out, Sorrel and Mintaka, hoping to give them warm, caring expressions. Pups seemed an easy problem to solve in comparison to some of their others. Achilles said she had ideas, Leas wanted to know what they were.

“We need a new guardian.” Again. It had only been a few weeks since they had named Alina their guardian. They needed a new guardian who could stay, who could help them all to make the pack strong again. “And….more wolves to help.” This wasn’t a real suggestion. Here stood all of the adult members of the pack, four of them, trying to feed and raise ten pups. How could they do that without help? Where could they even find help? “What are anyone else’s ideas?” She glanced between Rathbone, Murphy, and Achilles, her eyes lingering for a pleading moment on all of them.

Mintaka turned to see Auberon pull up next to her. The golden pup’s tail waged as he greeted her. When he pushed his body against hers, she licked his cheek. Then bright amber orbs turned back to the brown girl who arrived.

“Hey Ada” she greeted. Mintaka did not lick the girl because she didn’t believe they were there yet.

My goodness! Another small wolf. Another boy came out. He was a light brownish color with the most beautiful eyes she had ever seen. They were bright and blue and stuck out nicely.

Though pleasing to the eye, she was still wary as he asked who they were. Mintaka folded her ears and tilted her head.

There was something off, though. Where was mother? She hadn’t come out when the girl called for her.

Turning back to the white wolf… though small. Maybe she was a pup as well? Maybe older or just born big?

Why did she get all the attention?

Mintaka turned to the brown female who began to reply. She remembered her… She smelt of Auberon.

They were talking about Alina. The golden pup recalled her mother saying mamma Alina. They were the same person… and when they were watching the sleeping brown wolf… She said she was Alina.

Mother was Alina. They were talking about her great and loving mother!

Mintaka continued to listen about all the great things about Alina. Then a word that didn’t add up was smoothed with the sacred name.

Abandoned.

The girl furrowed her brows. What did that mean? The child only knew of good words. However, this one she did not know.

Leas said mother was in the caves… She never came. “Where mother?” She asked basically everyone. “Where mother!” She asked louder. She needed answers right now.

Then she sudden pushed closer to Auberon. A sense of fear and dread came over the pup.

For a moment, Rathbone had been oblivious to the tension. But as more wolves came, the bad vibes became more evident. All but one showed up: Alina. The new guardian. She had left, too. Whatever lightness had been on his features became solemn. Were more going to leave? Eventually, it might just be him and Leas at this rate. His gaze dropped to his bundle of prey.

He could feel the emotions in Achilles’ voice. The tension and disappointment.

The pups. Alina and Orion’s pups. He couldn’t understand how she could leave them. His mother had been one of the most detached wolves he had ever met, but she had been there ‘til the bitter end for all of her children. His gaze dropped to the girl. He kept forgetting her name. Minta? She was asking for her. Alina. He wondered if they should have had this meeting without the children….

“Of course,” he murmured. He saw nothing wrong in adopting them. The entire pack would adopt them, no doubt. What was left of the pack.

“We need a new guardian.”

Who this time? Who could Rathbone count on to actually stay? He was the most dependable wolf he knew, but he needed something to depend on, too. Change happens. He understood that. But there needed to be a constant. Now more than ever, for all of them. Especially the young ones. They all needed to help and take care of each other.

God, he was going to say a lot of words.

“We all haven’t really been together for long,” he began. He spoke slowly, making sure to not stutter. Each word thought out. Trying to keep the atmosphere as calm as possible, and not quite as wild as the last meeting. “But there’s still a pack here. Things might be stressful right now, but if we stay calm and just keep going, I think we’ll be fine.” Something he had learned from the downfall of his natal pack. There had been numerous flaws in the pack itself; but, at least he had learned what to not do for a pack. “If no one is eager for the role, I can be the guardian. Even if only temporary, until we’re all in our right minds and things finally get a chance to settle down. Because I’m not leaving. The family isn’t leaving.” The role of guardian had never screamed out for him. But what he had liked about the pack was equality. It really wasn’t a role of leadership. Merely a figurehead. But he didn’t want another wolf they were expected to depend on to leave. And he wouldn’t leave. Granted, he had thought about going to find a place, but more for some time alone when he had been stressed.

And he needed that feeling one got when someone depended on him. He had been feeling so dispensable. Just another wolf. But, like himself, the pack needed some sort of constant to survive.

After all the words, though, throwing himself out there like that. He waited for the rejection. The “No, you’re a depressed idiot you won’t be a good guardian” or something along those lines. And that would be fine, too. Rejection was always sweeter. He just… wanted things settled, already. They came here for a pack, there was still a pack here. Small, with too many pups. But it wouldn’t be an impossible feat. Wolves would come. Just like he and Leas had.

A fuzzy muzzle pressed into his back and Auberon looked behind him to see that his sister had joined the group as well. He turned around to nuzzle at her as Adler arrived and demanded an explanation for all of the wolves nearby.

Ma explained that they were pack, and kin - whatever those words meant - but Auberon did know ‘friends’. The black pup already knew that Minta and Murphy were friends! It was easy to add the small (but still large) white, fluffy lady, and the nice gray looking pup to that list as well. The gray pup didn’t join their little group as quickly, and so Auberon turned to her.

“Hi, I’m Aubewon,” he whispered to Sorrel as the adults talked, literally, above his head. “Wanna be by us?” he asked, nodding his nose towards the other pups in the little group.

He was happily smiling at the puppies until Mintaka was asking a loud, alarmed question. Auberon had missed whatever might have set her off, but she wanted mother. Auberon pressed right up close to her and began licking at her cheek and the back of hear ears, trying to sooth and calm her. “Ma here, ma fix,” he assured the pup, looking to his own mother pleadingly for help without having any thoughts that she might want a different wolf.

Sorrel’s tail wagged excitedly as the boy pup addressed her. He looked like Azalea, and she thought that meant that he was probably nice. Azalea was nice, after all.

“Hi Aubewon. ‘m Sowwel.” She smiled, but her brow furrowed at his words, and the way he interacted with Mintaka. Were they friends? Had she gone and made a friend with a wolf while Sorrel was busy making friends with a beetle? Good for her, she guessed, but was it okay for both of them to be friends with him at the same time? could they share? that was a worrying thought.

Also what was he talking about, ma?

“S’not Mama,” she pointed out, almost patiently. She looked around, expecting Alina’s scarred but beautiful face to appear at any moment, and felt a rise of terrible uncertainty when this continued not to be the case.

What the absolute hell was happening?

Murphy looked wounded, shaking his head with a sigh. Everyone was leaving. But he wouldn’t. Would everyone else? Would they be too scared or threatened to try and carry on together? He looked around, relief washing over as others spoke. They wanted to stay. That was good. He wanted to stay too, but he also didn’t want to wind up being some sad, lonely thing living in a cave by himself. The cave was awesome, it was safe, but lonely was not something Murphy liked to be.

He swallowed dryly, intentions encouraging.

“That seems like a great plan,” He said with a smile. “I think if we just…stay together, he’s right. We’ll be fine. Guardian or no Guardian, we’ll…we’ll be fine.”

The more he said it, the more conviction showed on his face.

“I’m the only one here without kids. If any of you need anything - I’ll go get it, you stay right with your family.” A tinge of sadness. But rich with purpose. Murphy could help feed them. He could help keep them safe. The search for Siberia went farther back into his mind.

“Or if you need a break, I know tons of fun games.” He grinned.

They were going to make it. Because they had to.
