The world had been quiet lately, at least as far as Saelys was concerned. For a while she’d done the biddings of her parents by not leaving the cave, not wandering when she wasn’t supposed to. But the isolation had taken its toll on the pup, and today she was going to work her escape artist magic to get the heck outta dodge.

It was still very early in the morning, so early that the sun still hadn’t fully risen though it was bleeding its wild colors across the sky already. Saelys might’ve enjoyed the sight had she not been so bitter about being forced inside the blasted cave. That, and she didn’t care much for the bright colors the world could offer. She was more interested in adventure, in something different than the norm. Something requiring her to think about what it was in front of her. She was tired of seeing the cave walls and hearing the sound of rushing water she’d nearly died in once upon a time.

It was all so routine. And she hated being confined to it.

The pup had a better grasp on walking and running now, though she still stumbled every now and then if she wasn’t paying attention. Utilizing these skills she’d been trying to hone where she could, she started trotting off away from the cave. Everybody seemed to be away or asleep, so she managed to skip out on east eden quite successfully. Having been birthed to two genetically large parents, her own form had been growing exponentially compared to other pups. But she did her best to slink away in the grasses unnoticed.

It wasn’t until she reached a foreign river that she stopped and stared at it gritting her teeth. She wouldn’t allow it to make her stop her travels, though. By now the sun was higher in the sky and the natural blue depleted the oranges and pinks that once stained it. She’d follow the river until it was shallow enough for her to cross. Or she’d just go a different direction completely. She’d decide when the time came.

Rán had been aimlessly ambling from North to South, searching for something of a fairy tale.  When it was apparent that she wasn’t going to get anything out of her journey that current day, the chocolate lass followed a sudden bend in the river south, hoping to find refuge, as she’d traveled all night.  It was now morning, and Rán couldn’t be more exhausted.  Or irritable.  All she wanted was a bath and a fresh kill to gnaw on.  Was it that hard for the world to hand that to her?  Hadn’t Rán earned it, slaving her chocolate ass off to search for her stupid sisters?  Of course she did.  But the gods could not hear her.  Rán was as she always had been, and that was utterly alone.

Sá sem býr án heiðurs deyr án aga deyr án heiðurs.  Oh, Vár.  Hela.  What Rán would give to see them again.  She would sell her soul to Djöfullinn if that was what it took.

Her reflection faded in and out of her peripheral vision as she padded along the river’s edge, charcoal nose in the air.  Rán Valkyrja was on a mission, and she would hold all the gods as her witness.  She would find her sisters.  They would be a family again.

The sun rose like a flower opening, gifting its petals unto the world. Amid the dancing raindrops was the blush of scarlet, the warmth of tangerine. Brilliant gold and orange hues bled like fire in the east over the rivers and beyond the city.  Gradually it raised, a defined circle in a vibrant backdrop.  The rivers were liquid gold and silver, leaving the mighty valley dull in comparison.  As the sun fully revealed itself it seemed to swell, loosing its focus and spreading in contrast to Rán’s contracting pupils.  An easy breeze picked up and lifted to Rán’s vantage point, caressing her face and softly blowing loose strands of her umber fur.

She was contemplating breaking for a quick drink when she noticed a small dark shape waddling in her direction.  At a first glance, Rán thought it may be a beaver or badger.  However, as the form became more apparent in her eyesight, Rán recognized the shape to be of lupine form.  A young wolf pup, clad in chocolate much like herself.  The only difference were the eyes.

Pausing as if debating to approach the younger thing, Rán Valkyrja lifted her brown tail in greeting, tilting her head to the side in curiosity.  It seemed the pup was on a mission, much like herself.

Her small body shuffled forward with golden eyes stuck to the ground. Still being a small pup, she was already growing physically tired from having run so much after making her escape. Eyelids occasionally drooped shut for a few seconds as she walked, only to reopen with a shake of her head to keep her awake and somewhat focused. The pup would be successful in her escape. She would do whatever she needed to.

Truth be told, it wasn’t just being forcibly cooped up that angered little Saelys. Ever since that one day where all the grown-ups gathered to talk about stuff, things had been different. There were other pups around all the time. Not only were they around her and her siblings, but they acted like her mama was their mama. And Saelys was not okay with that. Mama was hers and hers only and she’d be lying if she said she didn’t feel a little bit betrayed by the new additions that came out of nowhere in their family.

Saelys didn’t get as much attention anymore now that there were more of them. She already had to fight her brother and sister for mama’s love, but now it was too much. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back, as the saying goes. So, naturally, her solution was to get away from it all. She hadn’t even seen Ramsey around lately, which also irked her. At least he played with her like she wanted.

Small waddles alongside the river helped her cross distance, but very slowly. Over time her legs began feeling heavier and heavier and part of her contemplated stopping for a nap. But no, she couldn’t. She didn’t want Da finding her. Da always managed to find her and force her to go back home and Saelys hated that.

But a new smell was brought to her attention, resulting in her lifting her wiggling nose higher into the air. The pup didn’t know this smell, but it didn’t startle her. At least, it didn’t until she saw a figure ahead of her and heading her way. Instantly her hackles rose and she stopped where she was, contorting her body in a feline fashion as she puffed herself up to look as big as possible. Maybe if she stayed where she was looking all prickly then the stranger wouldn’t want anything to do with her. If she was lucky.

Azure eyes met the smaller figure with curiosity, then alarm as she began to see the pup act in a mixture of fear and defense.  It wasn’t violence Rán wanted, or even a conversation.  But how could she make the child see that?  The brown pup buffed up like a puffer fish, evoking a tiny smile from Rán’s maw.  She stopped in her tracks and lowered her haunches to the ground in a sitting position, attempting to make herself smaller.  If she did, perhaps the pup would no longer see her as a threat.

“It’s alright.  My name is Rán, and I mean no harm to you.”  The little thing had no reason to believe her.  Hell, if Rán was in her situation, she wouldn’t believe a sketchy stranger’s words, either.  But the chocolate lass was a kind and benevolent creature by nature, and so hopefully that would show through.  If not,  Rán could always retreat and find another way around the area she had journeyed into.  She didn’t want it to come to that, mostly because she had spent weeks travelling on a very specific vantage point.

The lass took the time to observe the puppy while she waited for a response.  She was beautiful; a stunning mixture of browns, tans and blacks accompanying her pelt.  If the pup chose to come closer or run away,  Rán left that entirely up to the girl herself.  She wouldn’t attempt to follow or harm the child in any way.

Saelys watched with extreme caution as the stranger sunk to her haunches and started talking. She introduced her name, which Saelys thought sounded weird, and claimed she had no intentions of hurting the pup.

The girl quirked a brow skeptically, her body curling tighter the more she studied the other female. It would be a standoff and Saelys was curious to see how long the female would wait her out. Of course, the pup was adorable when she wanted to be. She liked having adults wrapped around her teeny lil toes.

So when mama started getting too distracted by the other pups for Saelys to work her magic, she threw an internal fit. Mama claimed that she loved her blood children regardless, but Saelys found it harder and harder to believe.

The pup said nothing to the female, but the intensity in her gaze slowly began to wilt the longer she watched the one named Rán. She crab-walked a couple of steps closer only so she wouldn’t have to work so hard to project her voice across the distance.

“What you want?” She snapped, but curiosity was evident.

The child was suspicious.  That was conspicuous.  Rán did nothing more than patiently wait her out.  She couldn’t turn around and run away, for that would look highly dubious.  She couldn’t venture towards the pup, or she may be branded as dangerous and a threat.  If Rán was ever stuck between a rock and a hard place, this was it.  Still, like most things, Rán took the situation calmly and with an air of kindliness.

“What you want?”  The child demanded and the chocolate lass’s left ear flicked.  To get out of this stinking valley.  She thought but did not say.  “I want a way south.”  She replied simply, hoping the pup would let her pass.  If not, at least she could be dismissed without threats so that she could find a backroad.

“I’m looking for someone very important, someone who may have gone south.”  She tried to explain.  Enigmatic as she was being, she didn’t want to give away her entire purpose to the girl.  Children talked.  With talk came trouble.  There were some who would rather not see a sister to sister reunion.

Waiting to see what the child would do, Rán’s mahogany tail flicked back and forth, keeping her boredom at bay for the time being.  She wondered where Vár and Hela would have most likely gone if they had ended up in the valley.  Perhaps to the west, to the coasts.  That left Rán with a rift in her mind.  Which direction should she go?  The entire mission was most likely a fruitless effort, she knew.  There was a great possibility both of her sisters were dead.

But one had to have hope, yes?

The stranger maintained her position. Good. Saelys was the only one here who had a right to move.

She listened intently when Rán spoke of wanting to go south. Well tough titties for her, because Saelys didn’t know her directions yet. Maybe if she pointed the adult in a random direction then she’d believe it and Saelys could have some fun.

The fur that wrapped around her form began to smooth out and she slowly released the tension in the hold of her body into something more natural. Another few steps forward were taken, though Saelys made a point to take her steps away from the river. She remembered the last time she was near a body of water. The memories of her near-death experience made her shudder.

As she was approaching the grown-up, she also mentioned she was looking for someone. Saelys wasn’t good at socializing when it wasn’t on her own terms, which meant she didn’t really know many of the others at home still besides her immediate family. Therefore, she probably wouldn’t be of much help there, either.

Still, she needed to sate her curiosity and boredom somehow. “Who looking for?” She chirped, her stance visibly more relaxed now as her walking slowly turned into a light trot.

Rán stared at the umber child and she stared back.  When she was convinced that the child was only interested in a staring match, Rán prepared herself to leave, or to ask another question.  Fortunately, that was when the girl decided to speak.  She wanted to know who Rán was looking for.

Surely it wouldn’t hurt to tell her, yes?  With any luck, the child could spread the news to her packmates, if she had any, and they’d be on the lookout for her sisters.

“Two wolves named Vár and Hela.  They looks like me, but taller.”  No, that wasn’t exactly accurate.  Her sister was stronger than her.  Sharper.  Rán’s eyes were not ice, like the chilling blue of Vár’s and Hela’s.  Hers were water.  Flowing.  Forgiving.  Deep.  The water heard and understood.  The ice did not forget.

“They are my sisters.”  She stated, as if that were the reason why she was going back.  Of course it actually was, but Rán had wanted to flee the North, just like them.  What if they’d regrouped and travelled without her?  She’d always been the oddball.  The runt of the litter.  Not as talented or headstrong as her sisters.  The thought of it sickened Rán to her stomach, but no.  She couldn’t afford to think like that.

Her sisters were alive.  They were looking for her.  She would find them.  Those three thoughts were all she needed.

Saelys continued coyly skirting around the water to get to Rán, keeping an ear on the sound of rushing water at all times to indicate her proximity to it. She wouldn’t allow another incident to happen of her accidentally falling into the water.

The stranger spoke two names - names Saelys has never even heard of - and she tilted her head to the side. She’d probably forget those names in a few hours. Or maybe they’d come back to her if she’d ever heard the names again. Saelys didn’t really care much either way.

“Vár ‘n Hela,” she parroted, manipulating her tongue in order to verbally replicate the names as well as she could. They were sisters, she said. Saelys’ brow quirked. She had a sister, too, but she just liked to sleep or snap when Saelys wanted to play. It upset Saelys usually.

“Where come from?” She chirped again, edging closer and closer to the swarthy female.

“Vár ‘n Hela,”  The corners of Rán’s mouth climbed upwards in a grin.  The little child spoke again, wanting to know where she and her sisters had came from.  “I come from a place so high up in the mountains, it snows year ‘round.”  Her dark tail flicked, as if remembering the coldness in the air from a few words.

“It was so dark and so cold that your breath only ever came out in white wisps.”  And the nights were even colder.  “You could feel every hair on your body freeze into tiny icicles from what little moister there was in the air.”  Rán could go on and on about her homeland.  She wouldn’t, because it no longer interested her, and she didn’t want to remember the loss of her sisters.

“Do you have sisters?”  She asked, trying to make conversation with the small pup.  Perhaps if she gained even a little trust, she could follow her pack to her pack, since she was sure a child as young as the girl in front of her wouldn’t be travelling on her own.  Or would she?  It was possible.

Saelys’ attention kept for long enough to get the gist of what the female was saying. Mountains, snow, really cold. It sounded pretty awful, if Saelys had anything to say about it.

She asked if the pup had sisters and she nodded. “Sister and brother,” she piped up. But she could only proficiently pronounce Nero’s name. Cerys’ was so similar to hers, yet she still had trouble forming the sounds with her tongue. “And more sisters and brothers,” she said cryptically as her face fell into a scowl.

For a few moments, she’d forgotten that mama had taken in more pups. But then she remembered and became irrationally angry about it again. Saelys wanted the attention from mama, but it was less likely for that these days. It made her grow more bitter. But at least nobody had come after her since she escaped the caves again. Did they even care to go looking for her?

The pup’s pale golden gaze lifted from the ground to Rán as she closed in finally, and proceeded to take a seat in front of her. “I wanna go, too,” she said to the older female, eyes gleaming upwards.

The child proceeded to tell her about her own sister and brother… and then more sisters and brothers.  Rán cocked her head in interest.  She wondered how many siblings the girl had.  She’d only grown up with four other siblings, but had heard of families that had multiple, giant litters.  She’d also heard of litters of single pups.  How lonely that would be.

“I wanna go, too,”  She wanted to go?  Go where?  Certainly not to the North.  Did that mean the pup wanted to accompany her on her journey?  Rán let out a small chuckle.  “Don’t you have a family?  All of your brothers and sisters would be very sad if you left, don’t you think?”  She prodded.  Not to mention that the girl was too small to travel.

“What’s your name?”  She asked, now that the girl seemed comfortable enough to sit close to her.  Perhaps she could persuade the dark-toned girl to bring her to her family, so she could learn if either of her sisters had passed through the area.

She hoped that was the case.  Wolves were pack animals.  Rán had lost hers a long time ago.  She was now trying to regain it.  Hopefully, it would happen sooner than later.

Saelys continued pouting when Rán asked about her family and how her siblings would miss her if she was gone. The pup only shrugged. She didn’t really care if anybody missed her. If they did, it would be too little too late since currently they didn’t seem to care that she was present at all.

“Don’t care,” she spat, curling back a lip as her golden gaze fell to the river nearby.

Rán asked her name and Saelys sighed. Was she not going to get to go on the adventure with her? “Say-leez,” she struggled to enunciate. Her name was hard on the tongue. At least, for her it was.

Golden eyes wandered around the butte around them as she idly chewed on the inside of her lower lip. “So, we go now?” She chirped up to the older female, giving her a subtle puppy eye look with a tilt of the head.

“Don’t care,”  Rán’s eyes softened, feeling for a girl she’d just met.  If she didn’t feel loved nor wanted, that was not the child’s fault, but the fault of her family.  No child should have to feel abandoned or irrelevant.

“Say-leez,”  The child pronounced, bringing a small grin to Rán’s features.  “Mind if I call you Sae?”  Simpler terms would be more efficient for both the woman and girl to endure.  Besides, if Rán offered Sae a nickname, it may make the girl feel more influential.  Cared for.  While Rán wanted to take the girl with her, she knew better than to abduct the child from her home.  She didn’t want Sae’s entire tribe chasing her down for crime.

So, instead, she offered a large and toothy smile.  “Yes, we go now.  Race you to the top of that hill?”  Her nose pointed to a rise in the ground.  If Rán could get to the top of it, perhaps she could scout out Sae’s tribe and reunite her with her family.

While the chocolate-colored girl may not feel the most connected with her bloodline at the moment, Rán knew better than most that just having a family was better than not having one at all.  Or worse, losing one.  She didn’t want to see Sae go through that as she had.

Saelys usually ignored when she was feeling overshadowed or unwanted, even by just a fraction. Even if she was probably just making it all up in her head because she was an attention-seeker by nature and threw tantrums when she didn’t get what she wanted. She didn’t like the other pups being around. She hardly even liked her own siblings being around because they occasionally stole the spotlight away from her. It was petty, but Saelys was a petty puppy.

“Mind if I call you Sae?” She furrowed her brows and cast her gaze aside as if in deep thought for a moment. Then she perked her little ears up and wagged her tail and nodded to the older female enthusiastically before giving a small giggle.

Then the grown up proposed a race to Saelys and her little head turned in the direction she was pointed in. She started giggling like crazy before her expression began contorting into something more devilish and her giggling turned into cackling. “Leggo, leggo!” She said, bouncing happily where she was. She was totally going to leave this adult in the dust.

Suddenly she turned, positioned herself into a play-bow facing away from Rán and wiggled her butt in the air for a second before darting off. “Go, go!”

Saelys would win this race.

Before Rán could say anything else, Saelys was up and ready, intent on taking the glory for the win.  Well, Rán wouldn’t let it be that easy.  At Sae’s call, Rán burst forwards, long and slender legs carrying her across the ground like a brown bullet.  She was the wind.  She was the air.  She was falling.

Making a show of tripping over a somewhat large stone, Rán tumbled to the ground, rolling several feet in the opposite direction to give Sae and unexpected advantage.  Giggling to herself, Rán waited until the pup was past her before pretending to stumble to her feet, shaking her head in disorientation.

“I’m going to catch you!”  She growled playfully, bounding at a much slower pace to stay behind Saelys, but making enough sound effects to ensure the child thought she was honestly going to catch up.
