The pup didn’t seem to respond very much to the nickname, but Leas filed it away for later so that she could call Mintaka that on occasion. Perhaps it would be a good reminder of the girls mother, and a name from when she was younger and had no worries in the world.
When Mintaka curled in a little closer Leas instinctively reached out to help the girl, nuzzling her in close and letting her chin wrap around the pups small body in a protective and caring way. Leas felt immensely relieved to see the pup finally nursing again, and allowing Leas to groom her and snuggle her close.
Finally the little girl spoke again, her voice a bit garbled as she paused in her nursing to ask many more questions. Leas realized at first that she was saying ‘child of the stars’ was what Alina had called her. Leas wished she had the other mother here to ask where that name came from, but then, if Alina was still here, Leas wouldn’t be trying to care for four additional pups either.
The other questions were more difficult, and she was almost surprised the girl asked them. Perhaps it was that Mintaka was brighter than her other siblings, more aware, more curious. And when the girl asked what she did that others didn’t like her Leas felt like her heart was about to break for the poor pup. She scooped her chin around the golden pup again, as protectively as she’d even done with her own children.
“Shhh,” she whispered to the little girl, giving her more loving licks across the head and back. “We all like you. I like you, and my mate likes you. I know Auberon likes you.” Leas had seen her little charmer of a son making friends with all of the pups it seemed. “You didn’t do anything bad, you’re such a good little girl.” Leas praised and nuzzled at the pup. She wanted to do anything she could to offer more comfort to her.
Maybe a new strategy was better, not to focus on Alina being gone, but to focus Mintaka on who was still here to look after her. “I’m going to be here with you. I’ll always be just nearby and I promise I won’t leave. Would that be okay?” She didn’t really care how the girl replied, she just wanted the pup to feel calm and happy here again. “My little child of the stars,” she added sweetly and ruffled very gently at Mintaka’s fur.
