Maaike had never been great with directions.

She’d tried north like Fray said but there were just more mountains and no sign of life - or her missing sister. So she trekked east, more or less, through awful weather. The rain up here was almost freezing and Maaike shook her coat out impatiently as she trotted along, thinking she really ought to find shelter until the sun was shining at least.

But then she crested a small rocky ridge and gaped. Spread out ahead of her were big, mean-looking rivers. One close to her, two branches splitting off from it, all rushing back towards the valley. Smaller streams and tributaries wound through the tussocky grass, almost as far as she could see.

She didn’t budge from her lookout point. There was no way Tita would have done near anything that dangerous looking and Maaike sure as hell wasn’t going to either.

((Any or all of: Maeve, Lemming, and Scott might be nearby :) ))

//Keeping his encounter with Soli vague since that thread is ongoing c:

Lemming was nothing if not a good follower, and he did so without complaint. Despite the fact that Maaike had led him through some of the most unpleasant weather he could imagine. He trudged along, his head low and strained forward on his neck, eyes half-shut against the rain, his skin running a fine tremor beneath his soaked fur. The boy was miserably cold.

He pulled up beside Maaike as she stopped, ears twitching with vague curiosity at the noise of the rapids, an unending hushed roar of water and foam breaking across a bed cut through rock. If Tita had come this way, he very much doubted she would have crossed. Tita was ever so smart.

Lemming slumped to the ground into a puddle of slushy mud, his eyes dull. This is not what he had envisioned for himself or his friends. He felt almost as if they’d traveled to the very ends of the earth, and with nothing to show for their efforts.

((Yepyep I don’t imagine Maaike is the best listener/most pressing for details right now))

Maaike glanced over and was surprised to see Lemming slumping. Into the mud no less. Maaike blinked in surprise. The immediate response no longer came to her.

But after a minute Lemming’s miserable posture broke through, and she padded over to him and sat beside him. On the side the driving wind was lashing rain down on them, so that she acted like something of a block to the bad weather. Not completely of course, but he’d been tirelessly padding after her for a while now, so he deserved a break.

“Come on Lemming.” She leaned down and rested her muzzle between his shoulder blades for a moment. “You can’t rest here. Let’s go find some shelter, huh? We gotta be tough.”

She opened her mouth to say she didn’t feel tough anymore herself, but she stopped it before it made it out.

Staring bleakly down the slope toward the rivers, he hardly registered Maaike’s voice at first, let alone the fact that she was doing her best to block the weather from him, if only partially and for a moment. He felt her muzzle when she pressed it to his shoulders, though, and turned to look at her. She told him to be tough, and his ears folded back. Toughness was not, in his opinion, his strong suit. But for Maaike, for Maeve, and most of all for Titania, he would try.

“Okay,” he mumbled, pulling his paws under him in preparation to stand. They were somewhere between stinging and numb, an uncomfortable sensation to say the least.

As he rose, he gazed dolefully at his companion and waited for her to continue on.

Maaike leaned over Lemming for a bit, then moved back when he gathered those long noodle-legs under him, so he had space to get up.

She didn’t nudge him or push him, but once he was up she set her broad shoulder to his so she could offer some support.

He seemed like he needed it.

“Let’s get away from those stupid rivers.” If there was shelter, it’d be in the other direction, she figured.

[I couldn’t help myself.]

Scott felt a pull away from the mountains, going south. He hadn’t seen jean in a few days, and he worried a little bit… Though, he might as well go look for her and tell her his plans of staying in the mountains and teaching her might be off. He wanted o go down the mountains, see what remained of the valley. And the girl who had helped him a few days before was interesting. They both shared great losses, and seemed to get along fine with each other. As if they found comfort in it.

It was this reason why Scott followed her scent south east. Maybe he needed to stop being a downer and maybe he should spend more time with wolves his age. Staying around adults all his life hadn’t done him much good. It had made him too serious, and he had seen wolves dying around him, disappearing, leaving. At least young wolves tended to stick around more. Or maybe not. Maybe he was just telling himself lies.

He came across the rivers, and watched them with great interest. It sure was beautiful here. He almost wanted to stay. But there would probably be nothing here, no one here. He sighed and moved on, sniffing some more. She seemed to have gone this way, so he followed the river down stream. This was one of the biggest rivers he had ever seen, and the current sure was strong. Damn, hopefully he would not fall in.

Lemming was glad to take the support that Maaike offered, and leaned back into her shoulder with his own. He was completely prepared to get going, and turned back the way they’d come. He walked a few paces, but a wolf moving in the distance caught his eye. For a fleeting moment, Tita’s name flared in his mind, but it was incredibly brief. This wolf was not Tita’s inky black. Simply dark in color.

He seemed to be making a beeline their way, and so the yearling straightened up slightly. “Do you know him?” he asked Maaike, tilting his muzzle toward the newcomer. He continued walking in the direction of the other, eager to find respite from the weather.

Lemming showed a little more life and Maaike thought it was her help until he pointed out the other wolf. She recognize his too-skinny frame immediately and nodded.

“Yeah I know him. He’s our age, his dad died recently and he’s been feeling really down, so I helped him hunt. He talks different with this strong accent, so just ask me if you can’t understand him.” She informed Lemming, then lifted her muzzle and gave a few barks for the attention of the other male.

Hopefully he’d seen somewhere good to shelter from this stupid freezing rain.

He heard barking, and awoke from his thoughts. Looking up he saw two wolves coming his way, and one he recognized from afar, the other one was unfamiliar to him. He barked back a few times in response, and then moved closer to them. Looked like he had found the wolf he was looking for. The weather was awful, and he had his eyes narrowed against the wind and pouring rain. For now, he did not speak. They were still too far off for a decent coversation. Scott hurried, though, to catch up with them.

What was up with all these yearlings with broken families? Here came another one, and Lemming continued walking his way as Maaike explained that he had a thick accent, difficult to understand. Lemming had never met someone like that before, so he was beginning to get eager for the new experience.

“He-LO!” he called out when they got a bit closer, enjoying the way his voice bounced around in this type of terrain, sending an echo of softer greetings back at him.

Lemming was bouncy in more ways than one. At least he was reliable. Lemming never changed. He was just… Lemming. Maaike trotted to stay beside him, letting out a bark that conveyed friendliness instead of a summons.

“Scott, hey.” She greeted once they were all three close. “This is my friend Lemming, he’s been helping me and my other sister look for Tita. Lemming, this is Scott.”

Her mother had taught her how to do introductions a long time ago, or so it seemed to Maaike. And she had never forgotten.

“And once we’ve done all the greeting stuff, Scott, PLEASE say you know somewhere we can get out of this rain.”

One of them called, and Scott wanted to call back, but some rain got in his mouth and he coughed. One of his eyes closed against the wind. Ugh, this weather was nuts. They would probably be better off in the mountains. There were less clouds there. As soon as they got close enough to each other to converse, Maaike was the one calling out, and Scott smiled lightly. ’‘Maaike, hello!’‘ he said, and then the other wolf got introduced to him. Another large wolf. Scott was the smallest one here, it seemed.

Lemming and Maaike. Scott nodded at the both of them. It felt like the wind was going to lift him from the ground and carry him away any second now… ’‘Nice tae make yer acquaintance, Lemming.’‘ he spoke with his thick accent and a small smile on his face.

And then Maaike mentioned shelter. Scott had to think for a moment. ’‘Uh, ah saw a rock a bawherr back. Thir’s an lip intae it, sae we kin basically huddle up th’gither an’ hae a roof ower oor heid.’‘ he told the both of them. They would understand what he was trying to say, right?

As introductions were made, Lemming found the newcomer to be quite friendly. He grinned at him, the expression only widening the more Scott spoke. Lemming was pretty sure this was an entirely different language, and it sounded so funny to him, but he mastered some willpower and avoided laughing out loud in the poor guy’s face. “Nice to meet you!” he returned.

He gathered something about a rock and a roof, but it was the word huddle that wrenched a memory from his brain and presented it to him. “Maybe you should hop in the water quickly and then we can huddle.” Tita had said that to him, once. He hadn’t understood the term, having heard cuddle before but not making the connection.

She’d shown him how. She’d lent him her warmth when he was nothing but a stranger to her. It made him sad again to think about, but he peered past Scott to seek out the rock under which they would shelter. He would be glad to pay forward Tita’s kindness and curl up to a strange, skinny young wolf.

His body was still trembling with the cold, but he offered a bright expression. “Let’s go!” He would wait for Scott to lead the way. He didn’t have the heart to bolt off ahead in his usual excited manner.

Maaike was surprised how comforting Scott’s accent sounded. She kinda of wished she had something so cool, like an awesome voice like Scott’s. But Lemming, as she had expected, took to the well-meaning male their age with his usual ready friendliness. Yeah, Lemming, he was always… Lemming. No worries, none of the time. She didn’t realize ow good that was for her right now.

“Yes to the boulder. Maybe a hell yeah.” Maaike nodded twice. “Lead on, Scott, we’re right behind you.” she made to follow him, hunching up her shoulders against the rain.

Lemming sounded like a nice guy, and Maaike was nice. This was good, he was in good company. He was sure he would enjoy this, even while the weather raged on like the way it did. They both seemed eager to find shelter, and thus Scott would lead the way. ’‘Aye, follow me. This wey.’‘ he said as he turned around and headed back the way he came from.

It was a little walk there, but it would not take too long. And at least they had the wind at the back, now. He still had his eyes narrowed, though. The rain was really a handful… He walked for a bit, looking around him. Now where was that massive rock again?

Oh! there it was. The small shelter holed into the rock faced the river. Scott moved over to the place, and inspected it. It should be big enough. It should be… He turned his head to face Lemming and Maaike. ’‘Fin’ yourselves a crakin’ plook. Ah wull jyne ye.’‘
Well oops, maybe they did not understand that.

But they probably would get the idea if Scott kept standing there and waited for them to go lay down under the small stone roof, first.

It didn’t take too long to reach the shelter Scott had shown them, but Lemming was quite drenched. When the other male spoke, Lem simply stared at him, smiling, for a moment or two before some understanding of what he’d said occurred to him. “Oh!” he said, mainly to himself, and shook out his coat as thoroughly as he could before ducking beneath its cover.

There wasn’t a lot of space, but if they all snuggled up close, this would do just fine to see them through the dreary afternoon and into the night if they needed it. Being the lankiest of the trio, he tried to pull his legs up close to his body so as not to take up undue space, and smooshed his back right up against the rock to allow them each a place against him if they’d wish it. “Huddle tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime!”
