The rain didn’t seem much at first. There was no thunder, so Maaike wasn’t alarmed. But then the skies really opened, and it was worse than the downpour from the other day that her, Scott and Lemming had weathered. In fact the torrential roar of the rain - quite chilly considering it was summer - made Maaike fluff her fur out. Before it began she had glimpsed a lake somewhere up ahead, but now she could barely see a body-length in front of her own nose. The roar of the downpour hitting the ground required shouting as she turned to Scott.
“Scott, stay close!” She called. If she lost him now she might never find him again. She didn’t have to sniff the ground or the air to know. “I’ve lost the scent!”
