— Made a few assumptions, let me know if I should change them!

The night at the lookout had been calm and quiet. When his eyes opened at sunrise, Damien knew it would be best to slowly start making their way back to the basin with the elk before the temperature rose again. Despite that, he didn’t say a word, mostly due to Astred still being sound asleep and pressed up against his front. He lay almost motionless, simply breathing in her scent and relishing the tranquility of it all. Besides, the guardian seemed to appreciate his closeness while it lasted.

After she awoke and Damien was done with his morning complaining, it didn’t take long for the two to eat their fill and tear decent amounts from the wapiti to carry back to the pack. Damien settled for a meaty chunk of leg and thigh, crimson once again staining his pelt. Perhaps he could gift it to Stephan or Claes’ and Anna’s mother. He didn’t know exactly when whelps began to lose their teeth, though he assumed some kind of bones to chew on would be appreciated in case it was soon.

The heat beat down onto his hide. Absolutely awful and cruel. At least Astred’s backside was there to distract him from it.

What. It was just there, okay?

—you’re good!

She woke up feeling safe, happy, and wondering what the hell was wrong with her mind.  Her frame was relaxed and composed in the presence of Damien’s own body, her back to his front in a comforting embrace.  It had been enough to lull her into sleep and now she didn’t exactly want to get moving.

In the end, the warrior had to remind herself that sleep was for the dead.  She was apart of the living and had to make herself useful.  Tearing into the carcass’s vertebral, Astred dug just under its spine and into the crease of the creature’s hind legs to find the tenderloin.  Once she’d eaten enough to fill a quarter of her stomach, Astred ripped into other parts of the animal to deliver meat to the cache.  There was no use becoming completely full, for if she had to fight she would despise conflict on a full stomach.

Perhaps she could present Kumar with a bit of meat.  It seemed all her fellow blondie ate was fish.  Her ear’s perked as Damien’s breathing reached an audible tone.  “Careful, you might huff and puff and blow the mountains down,”  She cautioned with a smirk.  Of course, he was probably twice as hot as she was.  Astred was blessed with a light pelt to evade heat and blend in with winter snows.  She’d been built for the cold.  Damien, not so much.  His pelt coloration matched with emerald eyes did look rather appealing, but Astred would never admit that.  She turned her face away and back to the path in front of her before her mind wandered too far.

“Says you, blondie.” He muttered from behind, too annoyed to jest back.  He was irritated by any and every single thing about the summer. Summer could rot and die. “It’s too bloody hot.”

“Says you, blondie.”  Astred frowned but it was not visible to her grouchy partner.  “Don’t call me that.”  She said, though her voice was sing-songy.  After that one retribution, however, she left him alone.  It was best not to poke the bear, though it was an art Astred excelled at.

“It’s too bloody hot.”  That, she agreed with.  While mossy green surfaces and lush brown trees were enjoyable to look at, the Guardian preferred the icy solitude of winter.  It had been her favorite season in the north although the difference in seasons in her homeland were barely noticeable.  Summer could hold just as much snow as winter, some years.

Astred found autumn in the south to be the prettiest.  When foreign trees she didn’t know the names of burst into colors of fiery reds and brilliant oranges.  Temperatures weren’t as hot as the summer but cool enough to be enjoyable.  Her father had proposed to her mother under the bow of an autumn tree lush with the colors of the sun.  Back before he’d become a twisted man.

“Go for a swim,”  She suggested, tail flicking.  She knew better than anyone that it was no use complaining about your problems.  Do something about it.

“Might do.” He rolled his shoulders and took the suggestion into consideration. A swim would be pleasant, he supposed. As they neared the cache and ambled out into the open, the brute’s emerald hues traced over the lake in the distance. Though it was hot, a small breeze managed to make the grass and leaves of the surrounding foliage dance. Clouds shifted slowly overhead, mirrored seamlessly in the reflective surface of the water. “What are you gonna do?”

What are you gonna do?”  For her, it was more of a question between what she should do and what she wanted to do.  Training was the more reasonable idea to keep her body in shape.  However, a swim sounded great.  Though Astred’s pelt wasn’t as dark as Damien’s, the sun still beat down on her shoulders, making the warrior sweat.  Her jaws opened as she released the food she’d collected into the cache, then tilting her neck to the side until she cracked the bone.  That was better.

“Not sure yet,”  She mused, mulling over her options.  There was something about Damien that made her want to stay, and yet, her dutiful sense of responsibility pushed her towards another path.  Gods help her.

Not sure yet. Fair. He hummed in acknowledgement. Her task was to patrol and protect, which she hadn’t done ever since the lookout hunt, therefore it wouldn’t have been a surprise to the male if she simply said a curt goodbye for now and went off to fulfil her duties. His jaws released the dangling leg once they arrived at the cache, mauve tongue running along ebony lips.

Her company certainly wouldn’t be disapproved of, but Damien wasn’t going to sulk if she decided to part with him. He was hot and wanted to get to the lake — if she wished it, Astred could follow him at any time.

Turning in the water’s direction, Damien moved to follow the stream leading to the territory’s centre.

Know the feeling where a mind simply couldn’t be made up?  Astred was plagued by that very feeling at that very moment.  It shouldn’t have been a hard decision but for a being as closed off and cold as Astred Valfreyja, the choice to give in to her desires or to follow her strict protocol that she herself had created was a hard one.

She must have stood by the cache for a solid few minutes before realizing what she wanted.  Her entire life had been to kill or be killed, the rule of survival that had been turned into a twisted game for her at an age far too young to experience such tragedies.  Her brain was wired for conflict, wired to rip throats and tear lungs.  She was every bit the war machine her father had engineered, carved to perfection by a sociopath.  Every minute of every day Astred pretended that was what she wanted.  It was easier to fake enjoying unrealistic strength, to pretend to enjoy being better than everyone else.

She’d never been anything less than competitive and isolation from others came as a result from Astred’s coldhearted nature.  The night before with Damien, she’d felt as if she could be someone else.  She wouldn’t have to stave away her tough exterior or her warrior’s personality, but what if she were to open her ice walls?  What if she were to give friendship a chance?  Even love.

A small smile began to curve onto her face and Astred’s blonde paws were moving before she knew it.  She’d caughten up to Damien but didn’t stop, instead calling into his ear, voice and body whispering by.  “Bet you can’t catch me.”  It was a dare, a challenge coming from the ever combative Valfreyja.

It took a moment for the female to make up her mind. A moment long enough for Damien to believe that she was going to tend to her duties instead. It was somewhat of a surprise when she swept past him and towards the lake. A low growl slipped past his lips. Challenge accepted.

In a flash, powerful legs pushed the hunter after her.

The instinctive unnerving feeling of being chased caught up to Astred as she exhaled in a puff of exhilaration.  There was nothing to be wary of; Damien would never hurt her.  Or so she believed.

The Guardian’s long blonde legs took her across the ground like a bullet, summer wind whistling through her fur in a euphoric motion.  She rather liked this.  While Astred was tall and slim for her age, she was also built for speed and agility.  Damien had more body mass that would catch in the wind.  However, he also had the potential to catch up to her due to his momentum.

She looked forwards to winning, but she wouldn’t mind if she were to be entrapped by the hunter, either.  Playing submissive for a change excited her, but her Valfreyja mindset kept her from slowing down.  If Damien wanted to catch her badly enough, he could.

On one hand, it was too hot for this bullshit. Damien just wanted to get to the water and somehow attach himself to the lakebed until autumn or winter finally came. He was like a bear in reverse.

On the other hand, he was not about to back down from a challenge, especially one suggested by Astred of all wolves. The wind provided resistance but fortunately, he was built for power. Overcoming its mild force was barely a problem.

The brute leaned forward, aiming to nip at Astred’s hinds if it was possible to reach.

She was too occupied on the water—which was growing ever closer—to notice Damien’s jaws growing closer to her hindquarters.  It wasn’t until she felt a nip when her ears curved backwards and gait faltered.  If she’d been any more distracted she would have gone down.

Astred was off balance now but nearing the shore of the lake.  She would most likely win unless Damien made another drastic move, but she wouldn’t opt for an easy win, either.  The Stalker could be unpredictable.

It didn’t much matter either way.  Soon enough they would be in the clutches of the lake, their little game finished.  Heat would be staved away by the cooling refreshment of small, miniscule waves.  Not yet… but soon.

Damien’s nipping managed to throw his victim off balance momentarily, however before he was able to lock his jaws around a more secure area, she was already escaping. The water was near. Meager waves washed along the smooth pebbles before retreating back and repeating the process.

The guardian plunged into the lake and Damien followed, launching forward in the hopes of locking his front legs around Astred’s neck. He was meant to catch her — nobody said he couldn’t do it when they were already in the water. A low rumble left his chest cavity.

Her paws had reached the depths of the lake when Damien’s weight came crashing down on top of her, earning an “Oof.”  Of surprise from the Guardian before her vocals were cut off and she was under the surface of the water, their combined weight causing them to sink.

It wasn’t until Astred’s lungs began burning when she’d realized that she had failed to inhale before being plunged into the lake.  A cough from underwater was made as water came flowing into her nose, her frame still trapped beneath Damien’s.  Now her entire respiratory system felt like it was on fire and under no strict circumstances did she consider herself slowly drowning.

Well, fuck.  Life wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows.

His attack was successful. The hunter’s prey was trapped between his paws, meaning he’d won.

Well. Sort of.

The lake was much deeper here than he expected, and instead of gracefully descending into the cool water together, the two ended up very awkwardly tumbling in and disappearing beneath the surface. Damien’s first instinct was to gasp for air. Luckily a quick thinker in crisis, the male managed to avoid it and choking on the water as Astred seemed to be, instead opting to grab her by the scruff and wriggle his way back up to the surface.

He could swear the most dramatic moments followed them everywhere they went.

She felt like a blowfish, slowly filling up with water and expanding.  Of course, that wasn’t the case and Astred had probably merely just swallowed a bit of water.  Still, she was grateful when her head broke the surface and oxygen filled her lungs once again.  Which meant she owed her thanks to Damien.  Again.  How many times he would have to save her ass was beyond her but she didn’t like it one bit.

“I forgot to hold my breath.”  She laughed, the concept seeming quite funnier now that she wasn’t slowly dying.  The blonde Guardian padded back to where her paws could touch, the water still high enough to reach her haunches.

“You win.”  She finally admitted, blue eyes sliding closed to enjoy the coolness of the water.  Summer’s heat was a bitch and Astred Valfreyja was counting the days until the Basin’s lake froze over into ice, meaning she could once again be winter’s eternal child.
