Eve snapped out of her daydream when a cloud settled over the shoal. She had been peacefully staring at the flashes of light over the surface of the water but they all vanished after the big cloud set in. The puppy stared up grumpily. She hoped it didn’t rain.
Quietly Eve got to her paws and padded down the beach. She didn’t caper, like Doe or Speck did. She didn’t walk in a careful, straight line like Fox tended to. She meandered, zigzagging thoughtlessly here and there. She had been quiet and a little more withdrawn than usual since her father rescued her from the Chaser upon the plains. She hadn’t set a paw outside the shoal either, but a natural urge to explore warred with the puppy’s caution and desire to stay close to her family, leaving her a little melancholy. Plus her otter-friend hadn’t come back, and it had even been a while since she saw Percy or Bayley or Rowan and she could have done with some company right now. She wondered what her sisters were doing. She thought about sniffing one or two of them out.
Idly Eve began scraping at the ground. The sand gave easily underpaw. So, careful not to flick too much sand up so she wouldn’t mess up her coat, she kept digging because she really hadn’t got anything else to do. Once she had a damp pile of sand she sat back and began to pat it into a cone shape with her forepaws. Well. This was sort of fun. Sandy, so she’d have to go for a swim afterwards to get properly clean despite how careful she was being. But that was okay.
