Eve snapped out of her daydream when a cloud settled over the shoal. She had been peacefully staring at the flashes of light over the surface of the water but they all vanished after the big cloud set in. The puppy stared up grumpily. She hoped it didn’t rain.

Quietly Eve got to her paws and padded down the beach. She didn’t caper, like Doe or Speck did. She didn’t walk in a careful, straight line like Fox tended to. She meandered, zigzagging thoughtlessly here and there.  She had been quiet and a little more withdrawn than usual since her father rescued her from the Chaser upon the plains. She hadn’t set a paw outside the shoal either, but a natural urge to explore warred with the puppy’s caution and desire to stay close to her family, leaving her a little melancholy. Plus her otter-friend hadn’t come back, and it had even been a while since she saw Percy or Bayley or Rowan and she could have done with some company right now. She wondered what her sisters were doing. She thought about sniffing one or two of them out.

Idly Eve began scraping at the ground. The sand gave easily underpaw. So, careful not to flick too much sand up so she wouldn’t mess up her coat, she kept digging because she really hadn’t got anything else to do. Once she had a damp pile of sand she sat back and began to pat it into a cone shape with her forepaws. Well. This was sort of fun. Sandy, so she’d have to go for a swim afterwards to get properly clean despite how careful she was being. But that was okay.

As dedicated as Fox had felt towards living the remainder of her life inside the den, it was a difficult sort of thing to live up to. She didn’t have any sun in the den and her hips had failed to improve themselves no matter how she rested them.

She moved quite oddly when she walked, however she had slowly been finding the paces that were the most comfortable. Running was out of the question, even too fast of a walk would send sharp pains through her hips. She stepped carefully and lightly instead. Her hips swayed more than they had before, and her back legs did a little shuffle instead of taking full steps as she might have. She shifted her weight from one side to the other as she moved, but with careful precision she could walk at a fairly normal pace without causing any sudden pain.

The orange girl poked her head out of the den and glanced down the beach, seeing her sister Eve ambling along. Fox didn’t wanna go out into the scary outside where only bad things happened, but she still loved her sister and they never spent enough time with her in the den.

She ventured cautiously. Her eyes were wide and searching, looking for anything dangerous at all so that she would have ample time to scurry back to the den and hide if necessary. She was never, ever getting out of sight of the safe den again.

“Eve,” she whispered, doubting her voice would cross the distance to her sister, but still wanting to call to her so that they could spend time together.

Eve had sharp ears. She looked up at the soft sound of her name being spoken out loud. It was Fox, who looked nervous and ten times as shy as normal. Eve realized this had been going on since Bucky brought her home. Maybe if she was super nice to Fox, her sister would tell her where she’d been. Eve was too scared to go anywhere new, so she would settle for a Fox-story about somewhere new instead. Then she could tell Fox about the Chaser, which she had been too ashamed to tell Doe or Speck about because neither of them would have acted so scared and needed Daddy to rescue them.

“Fox, it’s okay.” She called, checking to make sure no strangers were coming down to the shoal. Nope, it was just them. “Come on out. You can help me build my sand-hill if you want. I promise we won’t be messy.” If there was one thing about Fox at least she could be counted on wen it came to appreciating being ordered and organized.

She noticed her sister was walking funny, but as yet, it didn’t quite click what that meant.

Her sister turned to her with encouragement and Fox’s tail gave one solitary wag behind her while she hurried forward as well as she could. Fox wasn’t sure what to make of a sand hill but it sounded nice the way Eve talked about it.

She crossed the space between them, her back legs moving in odd little steps until she caught up with Eve and her spot in the sand that she had been digging at already. Fox pressed in close against her sisters shoulder and plopped into a sit.

“What’s you making?” She asked quietly, not reaching out to touch it or disturb it since her sister had already started with some idea in mind no doubt.

Eve liked cuddles a lot, so when Fox came to nuzzle into her shoulders she turned her head and licked Fox’s lovely bright orange cheek. “You’re so pretty Fox.” She hummed absently, registering her sister’s odd steps somewhere in the back of her mind.

“It’s a… a…” Her agile young mind ran over the possibilities. She settled on a word familiar to her from the edges of the shoal. “Sandcliff! You wanna help me build it?” She wagged her tail hopefully at Fox.

Eve licked at her and the corners of Fox’s mouth turned up in the littlest smile. She turned to nuzzle back at her sister, eventually leaning her head gently against her to just watch what Eve was going to do. “Eve pretty,” she offered back. Eve looked like the nice sand on the beach, and Fox wished she could be sand colored because being orange made her stand out, and she didn’t want to stand out.

She waited patiently for her sister to explain. Fox hadn’t heard that word before, but it seemed right somehow for what Eve had started. Fox liked making things, it was relaxing to dig and push at things until they formed the shapes she wanted.

Fox gave a little nod and reached a paw out tentatively to scoop at more of the sand. She didn’t yet have any ideas in her mind for what to make, what the final sandcliff ought to look like, but they were forming slowly as she worked.

Eve almost laughed when Fox replied by calling her pretty. She knew Fox was just saying that to be nice. Eve had the dullest colour fur of her entire family, without Speck’s stronger colours or her father and Doe’s orange ears.

Her attention went back to her sandcliff though. She looked down at the vague cone shape that had happened form her piling up all the sand. Then she brightened. “Fox! Maybe we really make it look like our cliffs! Like, same shape!” She enthused. She went to work patting her foreaws and shoving sand around. She made the section in front of her have a vague ‘c’ shape like the curve of the cliffs behind them.

Fox pawed at the sand a bit more, moving it about in a purposeless way. She was hoping that doing something with it would spark an idea in her mind for how to proceed. Her name caught her attention and she looked immediately to her sister.

Make it look like their home. That was a good idea. Fox liked their home. It had a nice curvy shape to it and Eve was already digging at it again to form the sand to match. “Mmhmm,” she agreed quietly.

The orange pup stood and toddled with her strange, wavy walk around to the other side of the sand hill. She glanced at the cliffs of the shoal again so she’d have the right shape in her mind and then began to work at their sandcliff as well. She pushed sand from one place to another, pulled it away in a few spots. She was careful to watch what Eve was doing so they could cooperate and make it the best together.

Fox never talked much, not enough for Eve’s more talkative tendencies, but that was okay. Eve chattered away happily to fill the silence as they worked. “We put bit more sand there- oooh that bit you did there look nice Fox! I wonder how tall can make our sandcliff? Wow this is fun, you think this is fun Fox?”

Eve sat back and looked at their masterpiece in progress. It wasn’t exactly the most polished thing in the world, sand roughly lumped up and patted down by puppy paws. But it had taken on roughly the same shape as the cliffs behind them, and might have been recognized by someone not in the know.. if they squinted. To even and her imagination, it was wonderful!

“Something missing…” She mused, and then brightened. She took several steps away from the cliff then began to dig again - making sure not to kick unwanted sand on their creation and mess it up. “We need lagoon now!” Eve had no idea how she was going to fill the new hole with water. But that didn’t make her any less determined.

Fox worked diligently at their creation while Eve carried on the commentary for the both of them. That was fine by Fox. She liked hearing her sister chatter away without the expectation that she needed to reply in any particular way. She looked up with a little smile and gave Eve a nod at the last bit of the question. She was enjoying herself, it was good to make things with her sister.

She sat back with a little sigh when Eve did as well. However, it wasn’t quit perfect enough yet. Fox stood again and continued with more little fixes. She used just the barest little front part of her toes to sculpt exactly, exactly how she wanted it to be. The orange pup turned to study the cliffs briefly, but kept up a steady stream of tiny fixes to their creation to make it more perfect.

Eve talked about what was missing, and to Fox all the tiny details were missing. There was a lot that still needed those tiny tweaks but Fox paused for a moment at the mention of the lagoon. She gave her sister a nod. It would need a lagoon to be perfect too.

She looked around and thought for a moment. Eve was already digging out the hole for it - but carefully at least so Fox didn’t need to fret about the rest of the structure being disturbed. “Dig to water?” She asked her sister quietly, nodding between the the shoal and their sand creation. Maybe Eve could dig a tiny little trench and the water would come up and fill in their lagoon.

Eve kept digging, with a careful methodical scrape of the sand not unlike Fox herself might have used. She paused in her digging and looked over at her sister when she made a suggestion. “Oooooh!” She exclaimed, staring approvingly at Fox. “Yea! I’m going to try that!” She made a few last digs at the hole, meaning to start on digging to the lagoon so it would fill with water.

She hadn’t noticed the bottom of the hole growing steadily more damp. But she sure noticed when it started to fill with water. Her jaw fell open. “Fox! Fox come see!”

It was magic. Water, as if it knew where the two sisters wanted it, was filling up the bottom of the hole.

Eve agreed to try the other digging and Fox left her to it. Fox was much too much of a digger, and Eve’s mini-lagoon was decently sized that Fox was more than happy to focus on the details of their sand-cliff and not on digging.

She continued to nose and nudge at every minute detail of the sand sculpture. It was coming along nicely so far, but there was still a bit of work to do to get it where Fox wanted it. She realized that her sister was calling for her, but she couldn’t ‘come see’ right now because she was finishing her delicate sand sculpting.

Couldn’t Eve see this was important? “Mmmm,” Was all the sound she could make at her sister just at that moment, she needed all of her attention for what she was already doing. She’d see her sister’s lagoon in just a few moments.

Eve got a bit exasperated when Fox only murmured back, and she didn’t come over. She was still fussing with their sandclff. With a sigh, Eve set about exploring this phenomenon herself. She dug deeper, wincing at the way the wet sand clung to her paws. Ewwww! But it worked. The lagoon filled up with water!

Eve gave a little giggle. This was fun! Now she had to make the rocks. She toddled down the beach to pick up a rock - which was actually a piece of coral - in her jaws and trundle back with it, plopping it in her lagoon.

Fox caught Eve still digging out of the corner of her eye. Yes, yes, Fox would be there soon to look at the lagoon that Eve had made. Fox was sure she had done a good job, but Fox too had done a good job making the sandcliff perfect. And it was looking perfect. Fox nosed at just one more spot, and then settled back for a moment with a little sigh.

She flicked her eyes back to Eve and then rose onto all four paws to waddle over. She could almost forgot she had to walk funny as she approached her sister with a little smile. This was proving to be a very joyful experience. Eve was such a good sister.

“Eve,” she called, seeing her sister drop a piece of coral into the middle of the lagoon to match the rocks that were out there. “Where water come from?” She asked quietly, glancing between the puddle in their lagoon and the water of the real lagoon a bit further away. There wasn’t any connection between them.
