Kyra had been walking on eggshells since the visit of Empress Nima. She had stuck mostly to Nero, not that that was unusual, waiting for Daddy and Manson to tell her everything was going to be all right. That hadn’t happened yet, and so Kyra lived with the vague understanding that change was afield. She just didn’t know what, or when, specifically it would fall upon her family.

She was trying to piece the pieces together of what she knew, trying to make sense of things. Her little face was creased with concentration as Kyra wandered through the forest, never noticing the upwards slope underpaw until she was at the top. She stared in surprise at the top of the cave where the waterfall crashed down into the darkness. Wow. She’d never been up here before. Curious, the girl went further.

Eventually the familiar scent from her father’s border patrols faded from the forest. A little afraid, Kyra stopped.

The forest here was darker, unfamiliar. She had not run through the paths learning the twists and turns here like close to home. And there were… scents. Other wolves, not her family. Kyra knew other wolves could be bad wolves, so she shied back, looking suspicious now instead of curious.

Kyra had been /so/ full of herself when she’d told Thea that she explored , according to Althea of course, that the smaller girl had made up her mind to follow along an exploration next time she saw her sister leave. Maybe she could head off after and circle back and pretend she’d been on her own adventure. Yeah, that was a good plan! It would show Kyra that she wasn’t weak, and that she was an adventurer too.

When Kyky left, Althea trailed after her. The journey wasn’t easy and she tripped more than once, falling behind and having to use her nose. Finally, her sister seemed to slow up or looked, well, less enthusiastic. Althea picked her moment, closing the distance and jumping behind her sister. “SURPRISE!” she squealed, falling in her enthusiasm and finding herself in a roll. Her grin was huge as she straightened herself, looking around. “Where are we?

Kyra had been so focused on what was ahead of her, she had no idea she was being tailed. With a very unprincesslike squawk of alarm she jumped, then whirled around to see her sister. “Althea!” She scolded, narrowing her eyes. “Don’t scare me like that! Can’t you smell them?” She nudged her head towards the west. Did her sister have to be so immature at a time like this?

So many wolves. Potentially bad ones. “We’re still in the forest, I just haven’t been to.. this part of it. Althea. I think this is outside the Kingdom.”

Kyra was irritated with her, and it only left Thea with a smug smile. Why was she always so serious? She could smell all the other wolves, but it seemed to bother her sister. “Yeah so?” she countered, shoulders squared in defiance.

But then..they were outside of the Kingdom? Her eyes widened as a dark head turned to gaze at their surroundings. “Where do you think we are? Is it another kingdom?” Althea wondered aloud. What if they were going to meet other wolves? “Maybe we will meet other princesses!

Kyra shook her head, disagreeing on that. “I don’t think so.” She leaned down to sniff some ferns, noticing the way a creeper vine snuck up it and trailed into the sapling growing nearby. “Daddy says princesses are special, and that wolves outside the kingdom are…” He has a special word he had used. “Common folk.” Which she figured meant they weren’t princes and princesses. Less important than their family.

She sniffed a familiar plant up ahead of them, and took a few more curious steps.

Althea was only left to give her sister a lowered stare. “You don’t think there are any other kingdoms?” she asked, her eyes darting towards the trees. “If the other wolves aren’t in kingdoms, who leads them and gets them food like Daddy does?”

Kyra did know the answer to that. “Not here there aren’t.” She replied confidently. But she didn’t know anything else, trying to remember what her father had taught her on the topic. “Maybe they’re all um…” He expression cleared. “Rogues! Not worthy.” Of being in a kingdom, of course.

Not worthy? Althea didn’t understand that, because she’d met that other female. She’d been strange, but not bad or not worthy. Did every wolf have to be not worthy if they weren’t her family.

Well, that wasn’t her issue. She shook her head, venturing a few steps ahead of her sister. “HELLOOOOO OUT THEREEEEE”. She wanted to meet these others, even if part of it was only to freak Kyra out.
