A fog had settled over everything it seemed, hanging heavily in the bay. It blanketed the cliffs and the water itself. Though, looking west towards the sun it seemed like it might lift soon. It wasn’t the fog itself that had drawn Larisa’s attention, but the rise of land inside the bay. Through the fog she could still make out the green of the trees that rose out of the salt water. She wondered what was out there.

The pale wolf lifted her muzzle skyward and howled shortly for her cousins. She had not felt the peace and calm of having family nearby for so long, and already she felt a profound sense of relief at having found them again. It had been pleasant to stay in one place for a little while as well. Larisa made regular trips back to the mouth of the river that emptied into the bay. There was other game here, and again she knew the comfort of sleeping with a full belly.

It was growing close to sunset proper though, and she wanted to find her cousins again. She had been spending her time just settling in here again, but she recognized the need for long term plans. Or at least to know what their plans were. She waited for a few moments and then tossed out another, shorter call. In the fog no doubt the three of them would have a hard time finding one another, but her voice would carry just the same.

The fog made the air feel thick, damp, and cast a mysterious air on the landscape he had been getting to know. Crixus found he rather liked this corner of the world. It was far better than the desert, and the hills, and better even than the trees that he no longer trusted as he once had.

Finding Larisa had slowed what progress he would have sought in seeking out new members with which to build his pack, but she was a welcome distraction. He was thinking over what plans he needed to formulate and ripping the last of the flesh from a young heron he had managed to snap up when he heard her call. He lifted his head, hearing no real urgency in the note, and therefore took the time to push the remains of the bird away and pick the feathers from the fur on his chest, lick clean his muzzle, and even tidy his paws a bit.

He rose again, ears twitching to her second call, and answered it with one of his own, low and unwavering, before setting off at an easy trot toward the source of her voice. Though the visibility was poor, he had no trouble in finding her by sound and scent. Her fur seemed to blend with their surroundings, as did his own, but he drew near enough to be able to identify her outline, her eyes, the dark spot of her nose. “Larisa,” he greeted, his voice nearly a purr. “How do you like this place? It’s as if you were made for it, if I may say so.” He referred of course to the often foggy conditions, though today was certainly moreso than it usually was.

Her ears perked at the call in return and settled herself comfortably into the sand. She sat neatly, tail tucked around herself and her head leaned back over her shoulder to wait for Crixus to arrived. She intended to pretend to look as pampered as she wished she was.

She hooded her eyes and watched him with a little smile as he materialized out of the fog around them both. “Crixus,” she replied gently, matching her tone to his. It was still truly a strange feeling to be reunited with them. She had thought she would never see her family again, but here she had found two of them. And Crixus, dear, pleasant Crixus. It was not yet obvious if their feelings were exactly the same as they had been more than a year before. Larisa was working up to that again.

“We seem to blend right in here,” she said jokingly, adding a little laugh. It wasn’t the point of course, but then the point was gone, and they would never have that back. They needed to make their own new home - the three of them together. “I never did ask, how long had Abaddon and yourself been here?” Had they already settled in here, or was it just a temporary stop on the way to somewhere else?

Drawing up close to her, Crixus watched as Larisa settled herself into a sitting position, and he mirrored the action, smiling as she joked about how they blended in. She asked how long the brothers had been around, and he tilted his head slightly to think. “Not terribly long. We arrived in the middle of summer.” He thought some more, summer now coming closer to the shortened days of autumn. He wanted things sorted out, settled, before winter.

“Abaddon seems as if he may still want to travel, like before,” he mentioned casually of the time where the Point was not a permanent year-round home but a place that was only returned to here and there. Crixus perhaps had spent more time there than was usual, having no separate family pack of his own the way Abaddon had. “We seek a new Point, and I think this area is a good one. If we can find the perfect spot, I intend to settle it and protect it with a pack that embodies the ideals that we value.”

It was clear he assumed that she would value the same ideals that he did- strength, intelligence, and compliance to him as a leader were of importance. And if Larisa would join him.. well, he intended to make sure that the Blanc bloodline was secure. If she would stay, he was confident that he could make that happen.

“The new Point would be a place for those of our family to find, should they be out there. Finding you has given me hope.” He let his eyes settle onto hers, soften a bit, very much a conscious gesture. He wanted to win her over to him, unsure as he was whether she still felt something for him. “But it is also a chance at something more than we had before.” He shifted his weight, tilting his head at her and waiting to see what she thought of his proposition. Abaddon hadn’t been terribly pleased, but he’d also grown so antisocial that Crixus was sure it was affecting his mindset.

Larisa’s tail swished along, relaxed. Enjoying the company and the pleasantness of the summer, if not the fog exactly. Indeed they had not been here much longer than her. Larisa wondered if she had dogged their pawsteps the entire way here, just a few steps behind. It was a depressing thought that she might have always been so close - and clearly still so far away.

Her ears flicked towards him at the mention of a new Point. A new home. That was what she wanted too. They just had to find a spot, a new home, the three of them. She understood what Crixus meant by ‘their ideals’. That was shared between them as well.

She turned with a smile at the mention that she had given him hope. She gave a small nod - he had given her hope as well, but she wasn’t quite sentimental enough to say that. “I want to find a new point. Like you said, a new home for our family to find.” They’d all be able to find this place, right? Surely, if three of them had, others would as well.

“Were you thinking of this place?” She glanced around, seeing only fog for the moment, but imaging the rest of the bay that she had seen plenty of times in the previous days. “It is full of game, and fish. Doesn’t seem too crowded. But….” She paused. The swamp nearby wasn’t overly appealing to her - just sort of soggy. “What about that island out there? It would be protected, very protected, but looks large enough, and only a short swim back.” She thought at least a short swim, it looked possible to get to the biggest island in the bay. And it was green in better weather - things were growing, so there would be water.

//no problem!! <3 welcome back

Crixus listened to Larisa explain that she wanted the same things that he desired. This pleased him, and an easy smile graced his face as he nodded. She brought up the island, and his ears pricked as he peered out through the fog. It wasn’t easy to see now, but he could see it in his mind’s eye the way it was on less foggy days.

A grin tugged at his lips. “A beautiful face and a tactical mind,” he said, standing. “That may well be a perfect spot. Fancy a swim? Over that way, the land is closest, I believe.” His tail waved and he felt eager to go, pointing his muzzle to the shore. Larisa was brilliant, she was.

At the compliment she shot him a knowing smile. “A perfect specimen, with perfect breeding,” she joked, or half-joked. She really did believe her bloodlines made her a cut above all others. Not above Crixus, his family tree was hers as well. She shifted gracefully back to all four paws, giving her shoulders a gentle roll as a warm up for swimming.

“Indeed, we can see what is out there.” She followed the line of his muzzle, taking quick steps down the beach. There was a spot that looked more shallow when the tide went out.

A tidal island would have a lot of perks. They would be able to see anyone coming from quite a ways around - not that this bay seemed crowded with wolves. It would protect them from strangers barging into the territory. As long as there was fresh water out there, they could survive comfortably.

Larisa trotted ahead of the bigger male, letting her tail swish as she went. Was it too much to hope that they would pick up their flirtations where they had left them a year before? Larisa was of a mind to try to do exactly that. The past was past - and nothing but painful memories. She could remake her family here, she hoped. Forward was the only direction she wished to look any longer.

Crixus didn’t laugh at her joke- there was too much truth in it, he thought- but he did grin broadly, tail swaying in agreement. Perfect breeding indeed- just like his own. It was of minimal concern that her immediate family didn’t have every hallmark of the bloodline- their coats not having been the brilliant white of Larisa’s, but she was a fine specimen, and surely would not produce offcolor whelps. Not if paired with the correct male, at least.

He huffed and trotted along behind her, watching her tail and playfully snapping at it as it swayed teasingly in front of him. He was of two minds; that Larisa could be a distraction from his goals, or that she may be of great help and importance to him. He leaned toward the latter now as he found himself enjoying her company once more. As they neared the water, he loped to get in front of her, nudging along her side gently with his muzzle as he passed by.

The fog line was visible hovering just over the water, the biggest, closest island a darker shape. Maybe not the best day for swimming from a visibility aspect, but the water was calm, not choppy as it could be during stormy times, so the swim would be easy enough, if not somewhat tiring. “Stay close,” he said, turning to look into her face before striding into the water with confidence.

She shot him a playful glance as he snapped at her tail. She flicked it the other direction, then off to the side again. Trying to keep it just out of his reach. She thought they both felt the same way here. They’d both be able to fall back into what their lives had been.

Leaning slightly towards his nuzzle she reached the water a step behind him. She appreciated that he had stepped out front, to go first, to protect her. It was only what she deserved, what she expected from him. She gave his rump a little tap, letting him know she was sticking close.

“Abaddon hasn’t left to travel already, has he?” She asked as the cold water came up and up the further out they went. She’d forgotten what swimming in the ocean was like - and her nose wrinkled slightly at the smell of salt and the knowledge she’d have to groom all of her fur later.

Why would her other cousin want to travel? There were three of them now, they could settle down into some place. Maybe they could travel for a little while, but not until a new Point had been established. Besides, without family with him, what good was traveling? He’d only meet largely worthless strangers.

Chuckling at the little tap on the rump, he continued wading out until finally the floor of the bay fell away and he was forced to begin kicking, nose tilted skyward in avoidance of aspiration. She asked him a question about Abaddon, and his eyes flicked to the side, watching her. It wasn’t overly easy to talk while swimming, but he answered nontheless. “Not to my knowledge,” he said primly.

He was not terribly happy that his sibling had been reluctant to join him, but at the same time, he had offered his support, and Crixus was glad of it. He supposed that the loss of his mate, and then of his children and homeland, had affected Abaddon in a way that was still playing out. If only his children would return, and Crixus could have the opportunity to welcome them home, to their new point.. perhaps Abaddon, too, would stay. For them. On second thought, he could do without the boy. The girl, though, she was potentially useful and not so aware of the less savory points of her uncle’s personality.

Crixus snorted occasionally when a splash of water entered his nostrils, but for the most part the swim was not terribly arduous. It could be doable. He had doubts about the probability of large game on the island, but time would tell what might be available there.

If Abadon was still around then they’d find him no doubt. The pair could perhaps go tell him about the island if it turned out to be any good, or tell him it wasn’t worthwhile place if that was the case.

Larisa’s own paws pushed off the bottom and she took longer strokes through the water, paddling out towards the island. It wasn’t clear exactly how deep the water got between the two pieces of land. The fog and the dark water obscured it, but surely not too deep really.

She swam after Crixus quietly. There were just enough waves in the bay that she figured she’d wait until dry land before she spoke again - so as to avoid a rush of salt water into her open mouth. Perhaps it would be best to wait to see how the bay looked during a storm before they decided permanently what to do. Well, she was getting ahead of herself here. She just kep Crixus’ tail in sight and swam after him.

Occasionally Crixus would throw a glance over his shoulder to see Larisa behind, checking in to be assured of her safety. It didn’t take too much longer to reach a place where his feet could touch once more. He dug in eagerly with his paws, his sides heaving as he panted from the effort of the swim. He supposed if the island were to be the perfect place, they would become ever more fit for swimming. It was an attractive option, despite the minor hardship it provided in the beginning. Any wolf not fit for the swim to the island was not fit for the pack he had in mind, anyway.

The water flowed off his coat in sheets when finally he emerged, turning to look for his cousin. He shook off thoroughly, peering around with interest. “Not so bad, hm?” he commented, referring to the trip to get here.

Larisa had flagged some behind her cousin and was glad for sand beneath her paws as they reached the island. She tried not to show it and shook herself quickly once she had come out of the water. A winter of hardship on her own hadn’t left her as fit as she had been before. Maybe she could get Crixus and Abaddon to take her hunting later. She didn’t mind contributing to hunting, but she had always done it with a group, being on her own had been the difficult part.

She panted for a short moment, glancing up and down the beach, but only being able to see a short ways before the fog closed back in around the island. She gave a nod to her cousin at his question. Of course it wasn’t so bad, she just hoped he wouldn’t notice she was more tired than he was from the swim.

Glancing towards the trees that grew out here, she wondered what would live on this island. The beach itself seemed vacant apart from them, but perhaps they had sent the small animals scurrying already. “Want to look around with me?” She padded a bit closer, planning to stick together as they looked around. It was a decent sized place, and it might take them a while to investigate it fully.

“As long as there’s fresh water….” They could always fish for food if they lived here, or swim back to the mainland. There would be birds if they could get good at catching them, or perhaps bigger game would swim out here occasionally too. Larisa was feeling increasingly set upon this place. It was set apart from the rest of the valley - like the Blanc family was set apart from other wolves. If this place proved itself useful, then it seemed made for them.

Crixus watched Larisa come out of the water, both of them panting. He didn’t mind that she was tired, she would build up the endurance just as he would. As she padded up to him, he nodded. “Of course,” he said with a smile, touching his nose briefly to her head and looking around. He nodded again at the mention of fresh water- that would be of the most importance, certainly.

“Game would be nice, but I suppose if needs arise we can swim in pieces with a group.” He would certainly want to establish a cache on the island for days when the bay was less safe for swimming. Tail waving over his back, he strode forward along the beach a little ways before veering more inland, toward where the shape of pines was visible.

She smiled back at his agreement. Her tail wagged pleasantly as they headed up the beach slightly and then turned inland to see what this island had to offer.

It would be nice to find game out here, but she thought that might be scarce. His idea was a good one though if they stayed. In no time they’d both be excellent swimmers and it wouldn’t be difficult to bring things back a haunch at a time. “Are you any good at fishing in the ocean?” She wasn’t sure if her cousin had spent much time by the ocean before this. “I’ve had good luck with that river in the bay.” She licked her lips at the thought of a tasty fish at the moment again.

She looked through the mist as the trees grew larger ahead of them. Fresh water was nourishing them at least. The trees had grown tall here already, but their weren’t too many - it wasn’t like the forest to the south. She turned her nose into the wind and caught the scent of pine and salt.

Sniffing as he went along, the smell of pine and salt water was by far the most overwhelming, with undertones of petrichor hinting that the soil among the trees was likely darker and more fertile than the sand and rock of the beach. He licked his lips, looking over to his cousin when she asked about fishing, noticing that she too licked hers at the mention of fish. “I have been having an easy time snagging the birds that are about, so haven’t bothered much with the fish just yet. The feathers make a dreadful mess, though.” He grinned, snapping his tail in her direction. “You’ll have to show me your method.”

Reaching the treeline, he casually marked a tree as they passed, lowering his head to the ground to sniff along as he went. Here and there he caught the scent of a rabbit or other small creature, a good sign. They had to get water from somewhere.
