Crixus settled in to listen to Kaya’s report, nodding here and there but hearing out her entire speech before making a sound. It was clear that she was skilled in giving reports, information that he filed into the cubby holes of his mind wherein he kept the tidbits that might help him in the future. Her thoroughness was appreciated, and ever more he wished to recruit her to his cause. She was valuable, whether Abaddon liked her or not.
“You’ve covered a good amount of ground and gleaned much information in a relatively short timeframe,” he commented, approval in his tone. He wouldn’t patronize her with a complimentary “well done,” or “good job,” but he supposed she would be likely to comprehend the sentiment regardless.
“I had feared a lack of worthies, but it simply proves that this pack will be all the more exclusive.” His eyes sparked with the light that tended to come into them when he spoke of his ambitions. “This Jacqueline sounds as if there is potential. Perhaps she will accept your invitation and come to see us here- if her ideals are of our own, no doubt she will feel inspired by the promise of what we have to offer.”
He smirked, rolling his head gently from side to side and shifting his shoudlers. “I have some news for you, as well.” He paused a moment, deciding first to announce what he thought likely to happen with Abaddon.
“First, my brother, while supportive of the cause, seems.. unlikely.. to count himself a member of the pack. He will, certainly, be welcome as a visitor, but - you understand siblings, perhaps - we cannot always stay with our family for all time. We have been together for a solid year, but Abaddon had a family of his own, and the loss of his mate and children has.. altered him. So, too, did the acquisition of them, of course.” He winked, moving on, but he knew that Kaya and Abaddon weren’t exactly peas in a pod, and if he couldn’t have one, perhaps it would open him up to the possibility of having the other.
“Second- a happy circumstance- my cousin, Larisa, has joined us. I believe you will find her all together more agreeable than my brother, and hope that you will look forward to meeting her. She is not so successfully independent as yourself, I will admit, but she is strong of mind and body.” Not to mention, she carried the bloodlines that helped to put her a step above others. Crixus privately thought that maybe Kaya was likely to have a bit of this blood in her as well, as many did without the knowledge of it.
Another smile as he paused this time, coupled with a quick glance over the water at the island visible from the shore yet shrouded lightly in mist. “And last.. I have found the territory on which my pack will live and thrive. It is well protected and easy to defend, and all of the necessary features are present.” He looked back to her, studying her face intently, a cryptic note in his voice as he asked, “How do you feel about swimming?”
