While he was here Pharaoh knew he was worth more than a simple hunter, though keeping growing children fed was certainly a worthy cause. But in his time he had instructed many a young wolf, though until now he had held off, fighting painful memories of going Caesar hunting lessons when he was a child.

When would it ever stop hurting? Being without his sisters was an unbearable claw slicing ever deeper into his heart. He had simply devoted too much of his life, so many of his emotions, to them for over three years that moving on was possible. The former Prince lived half of his life in the past; and if it weren’t for the dedication of his mate, he would long ago have ceased to be a useful member of society.

But today, he lived up to his promise, and he dropped a dazed rabbit in the clear area just outside the caverns and placed a paw on it to pin it, letting out a deep double woof. “Children?” He called, knowing most of their names by now, but unsure of who would be in a mood to learn after so much horror and tragedy.

Adhara was good at deflecting. After so much loss, she tried not to dwell on it, tried not to let it sting as much as it stung the others. Her mother, Azalea, and everybody else - they were allowed to cry. But Adhara wouldn’t allow herself to fall into such a weak state. They all needed somebody who would remain strong, and like her father, Adhara was intent on being that pillar of strength. So, while everyone mourned, she hunted.

She had gotten pretty good at tracking things, but she was still a little too clumsy to catch anything. She just didn’t have it down yet, the timing, the ferocity needed. It was like she refused to let herself bite down as hard as she could, like something was holding her back - but she didn’t know what.

As per usual, Adhara had been asleep that afternoon against the wall near the entrance. Even with all the changes rolling through the pack, her nocturnal habits persisted. But the call was enough to rouse her, her sleep light enough that she pulled herself out of her dreams with ease. Blinking sleep from her eyes, the girl slowly rolled onto her paws and emerged from the cavern into the blinding sunlight. Adhara winced at the brightness, and when her eyes finally adjusted, it was to see the man that joined them not long ago - Pharaoh.

A rabbit was stuck beneath his paw.

Adhara narrowed her eyes, regarding it curiously. Only as she drew nearer, she realized the rabbit was still alive, its nose twitching. There was a thrum of mild compassion in her heart. She looked back up at Pharaoh, silently willing an explanation from him.

Mintaka was getting slowly brought back into the idea of staying with her adopted family. She saw Leas as a mother-thing now, Adhara as a sister that didn’t like her, Aster as a moody brother, and Auberon as her best friend… she couldn’t see him as a brother yet because they had spent so much time as best friend, and she didnt cuddle or burying her face into her siblings… maybe it was because they were nowhere to be seen or they died.

Then came the voice of the large red wolf. ‘Children’, she didn’t want to be a child anymore. Everything was so boring and she didn’t get to do anything. However, Leas was starting to give her more tasks and allowing her more freedom. It was what she wanted the whole time… freedom.

The golden girl walked out of the caves and stopped a few feet from the man. She gave a deep of her head, but spoke no words. Why were words needed in this situation? Her shoulders were back and she looked almost royal if it weren’t for her still out of proportion body.

Adhara showed up. The girl noticed a rabbit. “I caught one of those” she said to the man. Yeah… Not as big though.

First to approach was one of Leas and Rathbone’s daughters. “Adhara.” He recalled the name he was reasonably sure was correct. “I’ve bought this for you and your siblings to practice hunting. Ah, Mintaka.”

He was dubious about Mintaka, who he thought had tried to run away after he had confirmed with Leas the children at the time had not been allowed to roam outside the caverns.

He did suspect though, that she was the daughter of his old Evergreen friend, Orion. He had not found her alone yet to check, and hesitated to do so - not wanting to upset the clearly moody child. He hoped he wouldn’t know her when she hit her teenage months, though…

She proclaimed she had already caught a rabbit, which lifted Pahraoh’s brow somewhat. “Is that so? And who taught you to hunt?” He asked, knowing Leas had struggled with the difficult child. Did she perhaps listen to Rathbone? Or Murphy, before his passing?

A call through the trees was more than enough to bring Auberon’s interested attention towards the little group that was assembling. He knew he could go out into the trees more, but without a family member or friend, the forest in itself was not overly fascinating. There was some interest, and no doubt he’d sniff around more in the future, but for now he still often lingered near the caverns.

He trotted towards Pharaoh’s voice. The large male had become a regular fixture around their home and Auberon felt no reason to question why the big, timber male might be calling for the pups. Auberon was a pup, so here he came.

His sister Adhara and best-friend Mintaka were already there when the dark boy arrived. He gave each pup a nuzzle and lick as he came closer, presenting himself front and center for whatever Pharaoh was planning. He had missed most of any preceding conversation, but the last word ‘hunt’ certainly caught his attention.

“Are we going hunting?” He asked excitedly, his tail wagged as he looked up at the big wolf, hoping so much for the answer to be yes.

The chocolate girl observed him quietly, flicking an ear when he recited her name. It wasn’t surprising he knew. Her mother or father had probably given him the rundown of the pups in the pack, even if Adhara had never spoken to him herself.

Her head actually turned slightly when he spoke another name, much to Adhara’s surprise - it was Mintaka. The girl hadn’t seen the other one in a while. Ever since Adhara had told her she hated her. Did Mintaka remember? Probably. The girl seemed to take most everything to heart, even the things Adhara didn’t intend. Not that she cared. She turned her attention back to Pharaoh, and frowned slightly as Mintaka bragged about having caught a rabbit like the one Pharaoh had.

Before long, a third had joined them. At the arrival of her brother, Adhara tossed him a glance and even bumped his cheek in response to the affectionate nuzzle and lick. Otherwise, she remained quiet, allowing Pharaoh to answer his question and explain, finally, what they were going to be doing.

Amber eyes looked at the dead creature. It seemed peaceful in death. Her nose twitched as she took in its scent. Ears perked upwards as the man spoke. Who taught her?

“Leas…” She said after a moment of silence. “She did the work” Mintaka explained. “I just fell on it,” she said with no emotion in her tone. Was it the truth? Sort of. However, the girl didn’t want praise. She didn’t deserve it after torturing Leas and the others for so long.

The child waved her tail as Auberon came by and gave her affection. He asked about hunting and Mintaka listened. Adhara was as hateful to Mintaka… like the last time they spoke. The brown girl didn’t even say hello. Whatever. Mintaka didn’t waste her time with trying to make friends. She let them come to her.

By the Kingdom, he knew Leas and Rathbone had their paws full, but that was now three puppies that had approached him without a single word of greeting. He hardly counted Mnitaka’s nod as good manners. Perhaps this pack would not be a suitable place for Babette ad he and raise their own children in, as he had been quietly debating during his stay here. None of these older children would be a good influence on young royals. “Auberon, good day.” he said politely as the young male joined them, subtly trying to set a good example.

Mintaka at least explained Leas had actually caught the rabbit.

“Well today, you shall all chase, and if you are swift, catch this rabbit.” He indicated the one he had caught. “This is a common form of practice in learning to hunt. Now, if you hope to catch this prey, expect to work together. That is how wolves bring down large prey - with help from others. Be aware of one another, communicate with one another.”

He paused for a few seconds to let that sink in, then unexpectedly, he lifted his paw. “Now GO!”

The bunny went all right, shooting off from the strong scent of wolfscent with a vengeance.

Ma had taken Mintaka hunting? When did this happen? And how did Auberon possibly miss it? He was supposed to be learning how to hunt. He was a boy, why was he not being taught right away? He didn’t even know his Ma knew how to hunt. It was just mind-boggling.

He didn’t get the chance to ask more questions about how exactly that had worked out before Pharaoh was talking to him. He turned his attention back with a big smile. “Hello Prince Pharaoh.” He thought for a moment at trying to say the last name that has begun with a ‘P’ sound as well, but figured he’d mess it up and instead just repeated back what he had remembered the male introducing himself as before.

The two girls were otherwise quiet, and Auberon was focusing his attention on the big male as he spoke. He said they were gonna chase, but then he motioned towards what the dark boy thought was a dead rabbit. He didn’t even have a chance to explain to Pharaoh that dead things didn’t run, except the ‘dead’ bunny was released, and zooming away.

With wide eyes Auberon shot after it without another word. Instinct had taken over and the dark boy propelled himself after the creature. “Common girls!” He barked, they were gonna do this together.

Adhara listened, and only listened. Her eyes were trained hard on the older male, but she received Mintaka’s words and then Pharaoh’s as he explained what he was doing here. He had captured a rabbit. And now they were going to catch the rabbit. If they were fast enough. Adhara narrowed her eyes. Her experiences with being swift were less than ideal, but she was going to participate. And if she could, catch the rabbit. No matter how frustrating her shortcomings were.

There was no countdown. Pharaoh merely advised them to work together, and then released the rabbit. Adhara’s eyes flew open wide as she saw the rabbit dart off, and then Auberon burst off after it. She was on her feet within a quarter of a second after him, a streamlined arrow following in the footsteps of her brother.

Her eyes shifted between the trees, searching for the rabbit. She glimpsed it up ahead and surged forward, ignoring the tightness in her chest slowly mounting.

Mintaka was in no rush. However, it came as a shock that the rabbit was not dead. How had he caught a rabbit that he had not killed? She imagined it was some trick, and of course, she wanted to learn.

Quickly, the advice if the red male courses through her mind. They had to communicate? This didn’t sit well with the golden girl. She was independent and wanted to work on her own.

The girl was the latest to start, but she didn’t care. In fact, the child watched as the other two chased quickly after the darn creature. Her amber eyes slid to the right if the forest.

She recalled Leas circling around to cut off the prey she caught a week back. Running straight would only fail. The rabbit was faster than all if them, they were all still clumsy to a point as well. It didn’t take a genius to know all if this… just common sense, and she supposed Leas helped too with her lesson.

Mintaka shot off to the right and kept her mouth open, taking in scents through nose and mouth. She could see a black form and brown tail in the distance, weaving through the trees.

Her paws were attempting to be as silent as possible, like a feather, but she was still a pup and was far from mastering this.

Pharaoh trotted along behind the group, but he wasn’t going to interfere with the lesson directly. If the trio, who were half a half-year old now by Pahraoh’s mark, couldn’t catch up to their quarry it would escape and win back its freedom. They would learn from a miss, these children, too.

He did notice Abueron’s belated greeting (better late than never as his father would have said, while his mother tsked and insisted Royals are never late, Tsar!) and also encouraged the girls, neither of whom replied or even looked his way as they both took off too. He spotted Mintaka crashing off through the trees, and wondered why until he saw she was trying to get in front of it, a difficult task for her now she’d given herself more distance. But at least she was trying.

“If you get close enough, hit it with a paw, trip it up!” He called advice.

Auberon Fitzroy Matti

Auberon was a black streak chasing after the rabbit. He had a single minded focus on gaining on the little furry beast. If the other girls were following, he didn’t really know. At least not until he saw a blur of golden fur off to the side, except it seemed like Mintaka was running a completely random direction. Hello, they were supposed to chase the rabbit and that’s what he was doing.

He heard Pharaoh’s advice to hit it and the boy put on a further burst of speed. The rabbit weaved and bobbed through the trees ahead of him. Auberon certainly hadn’t completely grown into his paws, but he no longer fell over himself on a regular basis, and he was determined to outrun this rabbit. He’d do a lot worse than just hit it with a paw when he caught it.

(sorry for the wait!)

Adhara surged after her brother, briefly glimpsing Mintaka as she swerved off to the side. Her eyes narrowed, wondering what Mintaka was up to. It would be handy to be there if the rabbit suddenly turned, but it was a huge risk to take. Then again, the rabbit was way faster than she or Auberon - it could just as easily outrun all three of them. But all they needed was for one of them to catch it. Adhara was competitive, but at this point, she’d rather see it caught than try to sabotage her siblings’ attempts.

Her ear twisted back to Pharaoh’s suggestion. Adhara nodded, keeping it in mind. But they would have to catch up to it first. She picked up her pace, trying to run alongside Auberon, though her heart was already beginning to tighten from the strain.

“We should go after it from different angles, like Mintaka,” she suggested between heavy pants. “Then if it runs in a certain direction, one of us might get it.”

Without waiting for Auberon’s opinion, Adhara did just that. She veered off to the opposite side of Mintaka and charged as fast as she could, even uttering a bark to try to startle the rabbit.

If only Mintaka heard that Adhara supported her idea. Alas, wind blared in her ears as she folded them back. Stocky legs strained to not trip over logs and stones that were in her path.

Amber eyes gleaned with a fierce ferocity… a drive to catch and kill that rabbit. This time, it would be all hers.

Mintaka didn’t care what the other two were doing. The screams of birds slowly were drowned out by the adrenaline that pumped the girl’s heart. Blood rushed through her ears and veins and she continued onward.

Pharaoh continued to trail the trio, keeping a close eye on them so he could provide some feedback and advice for later.
