They had gone to the Oaks, and the moment they got there Nomad was already glancing around and sniffing to find a rabbit scent. He knew they hid around here, quite often. They should be able to find a few. They had to stalk to get to rabbits, for they would run away if they saw wolves, and they were fast. Nomad decided tracking them was the first part of the lesson.

’’Okay kids. Rabbits are fast runners. Once they see you, they’re gone.’’ he began, and turned to look at the girls. ’’The first thing we need to do is find a rabbit. Do you know what rabbit smells like?’’

Ash’s dark ears flicked.

He was perched up on his fort, a massive fallen oak, and he looked down to spot Nomad leading two dark puppies his age into his home.

Those girls again. The one starting with a ‘mah’ sound was okay so far. But Ash found himself less certain about Arashi, the giggler. He didn’t know how to act around her. It was weird.

He didn’t want to join a hunting lesson anyway, Ash liked to figure things out for himself. But he felt curious… rabbits. Nomad was teaching them about rabbits. He wondered how they’d do, and settled in silently to watch the lesson.

They were finally getting to the promised hunting lesson. She’d followed the large male as he led them down to the oaks eager to get lesson under way. She wanted to learn everything about hunting rabbits and even wondered if she might be able to catch one.

Her mismatched gaze looked up at the large make as he spoke about rabbits and how they were fast runners. Well crabs we’re fast too and she’d been able to catch them. So maybe she found catch a rabbit. He emphasized how fast they were by stating that the would run as soon as they saw them. Well then she supposed they couldn’t see her.

He then asked about them knowing what rabbits smelled like. Now this was a different matter entirely. Did she know what rabbits smelled like. As she pondered this she did notice the pale figure of Ash watching them from a distance. “Not sure,” she finally told Nomad cause she wasn’t. She’d seen them but she couldn’t figure out if she did know their scent and if she did know and didn’t remember then it wouldn’t hurt to be reminded. She looked toward the white and black pup offering a shy smile before returning to the lesson.

Mahalo had trailed excitedly after Nomad, a practically gleeful expression on her face the entire way at the prospect of learning to hunt. She bumped her sister on the rump and gave Arashi a grin. Was she was fantastically excited about this as well?

“Yes!” She yipped to Nomad’s question. “Like the one you brought mama and me, before.” When she had been tiny. But Mahalo remembered. Well, she remembered the time she ate the rabbit. Maybe somewhere inside her head was the memory of its smell. Surely it would just come back when she sniffed something similar again.

“Are rabbits out here?” She further questioned, turning her head this way and that, sniffing at the air repeatedly to try to catch a scent that felt familiar.

The two girls had totally different answers. Arashi said she was not sure, and seemed a little distracted. Mahalo was excited, and said she did. She remembered Nomad bringing them a rabbit, to which the male smiled. ’’Yeah? Good. Because the first part of catching a rabbit, is tracking one. We need to find their scent, and follow it. And be careful, because they can spot us easily.’’ he explained to both girls.

He looked around and saw the other young wolf, realizing Arashi had been looking at him. Ash, right? Holly’s kid. Nomad smiled invitingly at the boy. ’’Hey Ash, you wanna join the hunting lesson?’’
Or maybe he already knew what to do? Either way, it would sure enough be fun!

Ash scowled. Damn Nomad. He reminded him of a male, grownup version of Saya, always bubbly and excited. WHY was everybody always trying to get him to hang out with these beach puppies?

He shook his head silently, unmoving from his perch high on the fallen oak. Besides. He could already hunt rabbits, thanks.

((Omgsh I am so sorry I didn’t realize it was just turn.))

She tried to keep her mind on rabbits but that was rather hard when she didn’t want to make a fool if herself in front of Ash. She knew he could see everything from where he was. She had to turn her attention back in Nomad as she remembered hunting rabbits with Bucky but that had only been one time and she couldn’t remember smelling them before.

Her sister on the other paw said she knew what they smelled like and even mentioned Nomad bringing one to her and their mum, where had she been during this? “Yes of course they are or Nomad wouldn’t have brought us here,” she told her sister giving her a good natured bump on the shoulder. “When are we gonna start?” She asked the large male.

That was before he brought her attention back to Ash, her tail wagged hoping he would join them. However, it didn’t seem like he would especially after he shook his head. She didn’t know if she should say something or not after what had happened during the herb lesson. Finally she decided the heck with it, “Come on Ash it will be fun.” She didn’t understand why he was so against having fun.

Sniff out the rabbits. Alright. Mahalo felt like that was doable, they’d figure it out. Her sister bumped her on the shoulder and Mahalo stuck her tongue out good-naturedly in return. Nomad called out to Ash and Mahalo had practically missed that the boy was there before. He shook his head though, and Mahalo had bigger fish to fry than a pup who didn’t want to learn how to hunt. Weird.

The dark pup turned her nose first into the air and took a few tentative steps away from her sister and Nomad. She dropped her muzzle down, sniffing at the ground and grass. She continued forward a few more steps, her nose brushing aside some tall grasses as she tried to find a hint of rabbit. She’d just walk and sniff for a bit as she got the hang of this. It was very different from fishing.

Ash did not respond and instead just turned away. What? Had Nomad said something wrong? Uhhhhh. What was with that kid? Arashi wanted him to join, as well. But, she also asked Nomad a question. Oh, um. ’’We can start right now. We just have to find their scent and track them down. You wanna try finding them?’’ It would be a good challenge for them, to test their noses.

It looked like Mahalo had already started. ’’Good, Mahalo. Keep searching.’’
Nomad searched, as well. He had already smelled them. But, he would give the kids a chance.

Ash had already said no to joining the hunt. And for a moment he relaxed as Nomad turned back to his lesson. But it was the giggly puppy who pushed him, insisting it would be fun, and a thunderous scowl lit his face. It wasn’t the crowd it had been last time, but Arashi still had no idea what he found fun.

He found being on his own working things out himself fun. He found hunting thing fun, and he was already good at that, and he pulled back on top of his fort, as far as he could to the opposite side to the girls and Nomad.

“Know how to hunt already.” He grumbled in a low voice, before he slid off the far side of the tree and hit the ground, recovering quickly as he turned to lope away. He had wanted to watch, but Arashi had pushed him too far to be comfortable anymore, and so of course he left.

((Exit grump))

Arashi couldn’t help but laugh as her sister stuff her tongue out at her and she pretended to nip at it. Her attention had been drawn to Ash again and she had tried to help Nomad in getting him to join them. A frown was soon crossing her face as he stated that he already knew how to hunt and promptly disappeared. Fine, he found be that way, she huffed in irritation at the boy.

She returned to the lesson as Nomad said they could start tight then and she set her nose to the ground in a search for the scent of rabbit. Until a thought came to her, “Will I know I have found the scent when I do?” She asked mismatched gaze on the large male. Since she wasn’t sure she knew the scent that well. Though she supposed that she would know, she thought about it for a minute before returning to her sniffing. “Do you smell anything?” When asked her sister.

Mahalo’s tail gave a steady wag at Nomad’s praise for her. She would keep searching. She’d find these rabbits somehow.

She missed Ash leaving, having paid only a little attention to the boy already and feeling quite engrossed in her search now. Mahalo sniffed herself in a slightly widening circle out from Nomad and her sister, tying to catch really any scent of prey, she wasn’t overly concerned what it was.

At Arashi’s question she perked her head up from the ground. “Not yet, but you gotta sniff to find it.” She reminded her sister, seeing as she was the only one here smelling for things right now.

Ash left, and Nomad frowned. Another one like Rowan, it seemed. But Nomad guessed they were siblings; it made sense. Arashi asked him a question, taking back his attention, looking at her. ’’Well, if you’re not familiar with rabbits, it will be a bit hard to find them… however, you can follow whatever scent you find, and see for yourself. That’s finding and memorizing scents.’’ Nomad said with a smile. That’s how he had learned to recognize scents in the past. His parents did not always bring him a lot of food…

Nomad had found a scent. He grinned as the two girls conversed. ’’I found something.’’ he told the both of them. ’’Come over here, and the smell the ground near my paws. Do you smell that?’’ he told them. If they smelled the scent, they would be able to follow it.

She thought about what Nomad said when she’d asked about the rabbit scent, she supposed it didn’t really matter. She just needed to find a scent and follow it until she found what it belonged to and the the would know. “That doesn’t seem so hard,” she said looking up at the male.  Then at her sisters reminder she put her nose to the ground again. Sniffing around in the area that was a little away from her sister and Nomad she had yet to find anything.

Then Nomads voice rang across the area she lifted her head before going to join him. Doing as he said she sniffed the ground at his paws, “What’s that scent?” She asked her mismatched gaze going up to him once more.

Mahalo angled around in whatever path she felt like, smelling the grass, and ground, and rocks nearby to see what she could find. Nomad talked and explained more to them. Mahalo kept an ear trained in his direction to catch it all. If they were going home soon then she wouldn’t get a lot of other hunting lessons and she had to make this one count.

Of course it was the big adult who found the scent first. She sprang away from the area she had been smelling at and came trotting to the area Nomad indicated. She stuck her nose right on down near his paws, and while she smelled Nomad himself, she smelled other things as well.

The dark girl sniffed a few times, moving her nose out with each one until she was taking little steps forward as she went. “Come on, we gotta follow!” She demanded of the other two. Mahalo was always good at pressing others forward when new, interesting things came up.

Arashi came over first, asking what kind of scent this was. Nomad grinned at her. ’’This is a rabbit’s scent.’’ he told her. And now that she knew, it would be easier to find them. Mahalo surely was excited. But, it looked like Mahalo was not going after the rabbit?

Wait, rabbits kids, rabbits! ’’You found another scent?’’ Nomad asked, confused. Guuuuuys, they were supposed to focus on rabbitsssss.
