The large bulky youth panted heavily as he climbed atop one of the many many ridges, pausing as a fresh breeze blew toward him, stirring the stalks that rose to his belly, sterling silver eyes closing as he felt the wind blow through his thick black fur, tugging at his fluffy mane. A smile formed on his rubbery lips as he inhaled the clean air. Slowly, his head turned, taking in the vast scene before him.

Daesamar sighed softly in quiet awe and amazement as the sun’s rising form creeped over the distance, casting the plains in it’s golden rays. It was a new day, there was a lot to do and he intended to enjoy the day to the fullest, by being productive. This was started off with a loud playful yip, the large wolf dashed forward, snapping his fangs at a partially large stalk before a soft growl emitted and he flopped down onto his side, his ‘prey’ stickinging out from between his jaws as he ended up on his back, ebony limbs toward the sky as he giggled, simply enjoying being alive and staring up toward the vibrant blue sky., his crooked right ear flicking as he grinned.

Ash, it seemed, had left on his journey. When he didn’t stop by with food a few days in a row, Rowan knew. He’d made a promise to himself to be strong, to not fail his brother—to keep he and Saya healthy and protected until Ash returned to them.

He had every faith that would be sooner than later.

The blue-eyed boy had decided, as soon as he’d woken, to try a bit of hunting. Undertaking such a duty was not a task that meshed well with his lax lifestyle. Rowan was more used to lounging about, taking things easy for the sake of his weak heart, and having food brought to him by caring adults or a brother who wanted to prove himself.

But things were different now, and he had to try. Knowing he could always fall back on the cache Bucky and the Rangers provided gave him the courage he needed.

He’d come quite a ways east into the neighboring range when he first spotted another wolf. Even from a distance, Rowan could see that the dark individual was massive, his silhouette rounded with muscle. And he was powerful, too—if the way he leapt from a hilltop to grab at something in the grass with apparent ease was any indication.

Rowan’s eyes widened. Was he playing witness to some secret, effective hunting technique? Was the thing the wolf held in his mouth prey, and had he captured it due to following some clandestine strategy only he knew?

The pup stalked closer, his attention rapt upon the older boy.

several paces away, but visible!

The large youth’s secrete was fairly simple, he enjoyed living, and he had managed to catch the stalk by pure luck while he had followed a playful impulse. He looked up at the sky, watching the speckled clouds roll by as a content sigh escaped him. This was fun, there wasn’t much to worry about at the moment and he chose to enjoy it.

Unaware that he was being stalked by someone else. He let the minutes go past before groaning and disturbing the peace as he rolled over onto his sides and then legs. Daesamar pulled himself up, letting the everpresent wind blow through his long fluffy black and ash colored fur. The Yearling gave himself a good shake, to dislodge the dust and debris, it was then that he caught sight of the pale watcher. Silver eyes blinked in surprise, how long had he been there? It didn’t make the easy going wolf mad or anything, instead, he smiled, letting a soft yip of greeting emit toward the younger wolf.

Rowan was not prepared for the sensation that followed the dark wolf spotting him. It was a little electric pulse, one that ran along his spine and bid the fur there to lift. He worked consciously to keep it smoothed in spite of his nerves.

The quiet yip that flowed to him had his head lifting. For as abashed as he felt for spying on this stranger, the greeting he received sounded inherently welcoming. The dark male didn’t seem to mind his presence.

But, again—as they so often did—Bucky’s words echoed in his mind.

You can’t tell the good from the bad.

Rowan’s throat bobbed in a swallow. He thought about Benny. About Witchhazel. They’d been… okay. But a recent string of successes seemed apt to take a turn for the worst. That had been the way of his life. The happiest times were sullied by the less happy, and the less happy were inevitable, he’d learned.

Still, his naive heart yearned to walk closer.

He took a step forward, and with it, found an ease in taking the next. He was slow and deliberate in his approach, lowering his head out of suspicion. Perhaps it would come off as submission, though.

“Hullo?”

The mountain had been a calling song, but ultimately the thought of tracking up it was not the sort of thing he needed to do. Not yet. While hi determination still weighted upon him heavily enough, he kept drifting. Confidence lingered on his gait, he found little in the reason to turn himself away in a start in another direction.

His eyes seemed to grow a little bit heavier, and he allowed his head to keep raised above the grass. The Range was a comfortable thing, but his tail swished from one side to the other. It was a comfortable sound that was still echoing in his ears, and the notion that he could have been on the right track or not was a pained thought.

It was just a constant bout of freaking circles. One never really knew where he was going, but nothing had yet been enough to snag his attention. Not to say such was a bad thing, but it was a change from the normalcy he had pushed himself on. The scent that graced his nose, though, he seemed to force himself to slow. The scent of others drifted to his nose, and he hesitated. Could he be bothered?

two rounds away ish

Daesamar’s grin widened, his rubbery lips drawing back into a friendly smile as the smaller wolf came closer, step by step, he approached. The large yearling nodded in euguringly, before he lowered himself, settling onto his stomach, letting his paws rest neatly before him as the pup spoke. A small one worded greeting escaping as he bowed his head.

“Hello to you too.” the obsidian and sterling flecked youth greeted with a chirp,  he shifted a bit, the stalks had been pressed down under his weight, he gestured toward the spot with his snout “Wanna sit? It’s beautiful day out, I’d love to enjoy it with some company.” As he spoke, Daesamar exhaled softly, looking up toward the blue sky “Name’s Daesamar.” he added as an afterthought.

Bucky’s warning continued to ring, clear as birdsong, in his thoughts. Without any world experience, any precedent, however—Rowan couldn’t help but indulge his desire to see this stranger as good. He was a social creature, perhaps the most open of the bunch that was his siblings to strangers.

As the dark wolf settled onto his stomach and offered a patch of flatted grass for his benefit, Rowan didn’t stop walking closer.

He lowered his snout, sniffing the place where he was expected to rest. His eyes continued to flick up to the other boy, Daesamar, all the while, until at last he decided to settle into a sit.

“Daesamar?” he repeated, wanting to get the name right. “I’m Rowan. Or Ro.”

With an inward sigh, he looked around the range, at the climbing sun and brightening sky. The other wolf was right; the day was actually beginning rather pleasant after all.

“Do you live here?”

As he crested a small roll of a hill, there was some surprise to come upon two males. It was not something that he abhorred, although there was an instant ugliness to his thoughts. It seemed it was plagued with rogue, wandering males.

Perhaps the winter was upon them, beckoning and offering enough tail that there were clusters arriving at the valley. Oh, it was something he had thought about himself - but his jaws had yet to close around the neck of someone. Tongue flicked out of his lips, and he felt drawn in closer, hoping.

Perhaps they weren’t idiots as the other had been; perhaps they had information. But he didn’t call out - feigning his easy attitude as he closed in on them. Better they not know the truth.

The dark furred wolf smiled warmly when his new cream-colored companion introduced himself. He bobbed his head quickly as his own name was repeated. “yep.” he chirped in conformation. Silver eyes shone brightly as he looked back up at the sky. ”Rowan…..I like it, a lot.” he added.
He turned, to look the smaller, younger wolf in the eyes before giving his head a slow shake in response. “No, I was passing through when a mountain exploded south of here… I fell in I got hurt, been recovering far to the south. Now, my leg’s not hurting, so it seemed like a good time to move on, these fields are pretty though, so I had to stop and appreciate their beauty.” his grin widening “I get to meet good wolves like you when I do.” .
