Okay, that had not gone well. New plan; don’t ask wolves if they’re friend or foe. Because some wolves would get their tail in a knot, like that weird guy who spoke like he was the most important wolf in the world. Huh. Scott had gotten out of there alive and unharmed, though. He was glad… But, there was one problem now; everyone was an enemy now, it seemed. The wolf had smelled of pack. If even pack wolves were dangerous, then Scott had on idea where to go, anymore.

All he had wanted was to find a new home in this valley and become a Guard, like his father once had been, like he once had been. If he could not get back into his old routine, if he could not get back a piece of his old life, if he could not grow stronger and braver again… he would be doomed. Because there was nothing else he wanted. Scott was determined.

And if he would not get his life back on track… he might as well join his father.

That thought wasn’t as scary anymore as it had been a few months ago.

Mintaka was practicing hunting and tracking. She was alone now, and it felt good. Her ears flicked back and forth and to the side to make sure no predators attempted to attack her.

Then it was that the golden girl caught scent of something. It wasn’t anything she had smelt before. The scent wasn’t that of a wolf she knew, but she knew it was a stranger.

Her tongue lapped at her nose as her head lowered and ear perked forward. Mintaka did her best to make her paws light as a feather. However, sometimes her tail would snag on some brush.

There were no scent markers, so the girl still thought she was in her own territory.

(Up to you if she is advisable or not)

Where to go next? Scott had no idea. He felt quite shitty. Alone, without a purpose. He wanted to look for that perfect pack. But it was kind of hard. For the first time in like… ever, Scott was impatient. And he was frustrated. Not sure what to do now, he was hungry and tired. The boy angrily snapped at some bark on a branch, then immediately fell back and slumped into a sagged sit. Sighing, ears pressed back. Staring off into the distance.

(are you guys tired of me yet? hahaha)

Patrolling and hunting. That was what his life had become, for the most part, since he took the responsibility of naming himself Chief. There was nothing wrong with that, of course - Icarus loved to keep his friends happy and healthy. If anything, he strived to make a good home for them. It was little more than an observation that that seemed to be what he was doing most. Sometimes, he found himself missing the excitement and mystery of exploration, but there was no way he’d head back out again without a damn good reason. The labyrinth was home, and he was content to chain himself to the roots and live out the rest of his days there if it meant keeping his friends safe and well fed.

Icarus had spent that morning stalking a badger he had caught wandering through the labyrinth. At this point, they didn’t have any young at risk of being injured by the badger, but still, he hadn’t wanted anybody to accidentally stumble upon it and get attacked. The badger must have sensed it was being followed, because it led Icarus straight out of the labyrinth and down the slope into the woods, presumably away from its den.

That wasn’t about to stop him from putting an end to the badger’s potential threat, however. He followed the animal, briefly noting the wolf scents on the wind, but didn’t realize how close he was until he spotted a dark wolf nearby - and the badger toddling straight for him beneath the brush.

Icarus prickled, worried - but if he was going to take it out, there was no better time than when he potentially had backup, right? The masked boy broke into a jog, intent on cornering the badger and hoping this other wolf would help. “Hey you! Heads up, there’s a badger to your left!”

Amber eyes watched as the boy thrashed at some bark. Well he was angry, and Mintaka liked that. Anger was her source of energy. It was what caused her to get up from her laying spot to complete the day.

A smirk formed on her lips. She could bring Jim back like Adhara brought back Asa. Yes, then Mintaka could finally do something to help the pack. More wolves meant more time for training and Leas could relax for once… if that was even possible.

However, a voice that caused her ears to shatter came in the distance. What was a badger? Then the massive thing came waddling up and Mintaka could help but knit her brows and tilt her head.

What. Was. That. Thing. She knew it was a badger, but it looked so strange. Therefore, Mintaka had to get near it, right? She began to trot up to it, passing the dark boy until the creature started hissing, which was a few meters away.

The girl saw the teeth and common sense immediately slapped her upside the head.

The golden child began walking back wards. Her fur stood on end as she began to growl back. What was she supposed to do? All she wanted was to bring back this stranger.

However, she found it better to go away. Go back to the caverns. Maybe the boy would wander over there so she could bring him back, but now wasn’t that time.

The girl then ran away back to her home.

Scott did not notice the girl, and he did not know there was a second wolf there until he heard him call out. His focus was on the creature, that came running in. A badger. Nasty buggers with sharp teeth. Scott’s hackles raised as he stood there, stepping away from the tree. He thought he saw someone else run away (which, in fact, was the girl, but he didn’t know that). Then, his eyes fell on the other wolf. White, with a black face.

Oh, yeah, the badger. It had made a hissing noise. Scott did not want to get bitten, but he assumed he was supposed to do something? He could not let it just walk away. The other wolf was after it, and it would look weird if he did not do anything, right?

It was just… hunting. Hunting prey with teeth.

Did the other wolf need help? Scott moved in closer, hackles raised. Growling at the badger.
Even though he was starving, for the first time in a while he looked a lot fiercer. Less scared.

Panting, Icarus jogged his way over to the dark male. It wasn’t until it could have been too late that Icarus noticed he wasn’t alone - he recognized the golden girl, Mintaka, as she faced the badger’s teeth. He felt a surge of panic, pushing into the clearing to warn the girl to stay away but it seemed she was already well on her way to escape.

Icarus twisted his ears and was drawn next to the sound of the other male’s growling. Icarus bristled slightly, but his bright eyes flashed with an excitable smile.

“Keep your distance or it’ll nip your nose,” Icarus warned, but there was nothing dire in his voice. He had chased the badger out for a reason, and he’d be damned if he wasn’t going to have fun with it.

Tail wagging, Icarus feigned a lunge at the badger, snapping his teeth in the air behind it. The badger whipped its head around and hissed, clearly upset that it had been cornered.

The boy did not have to tell him that, Scott knew what a badger was. He had a run in with one, before. So Scott kept his distance but he still growled, and walked back and forth in front of the creature. The other wolf went ahead and attacked it from behind. The badger was cornered by them, and while it was distracted by the white wolf, Scott moved in to nap at it’s neck and get a quick bite. After that, he pulled back again, so it would not get a bite on him in response.

It looked his direction now, angry and hissing. It was making a lot of noise, as if it wanted to scare them away. But Scott was not afraid of the noise. He knew the teeth were more dangerous. And while it made noise, it could not bite. Barking wolves don’t bite, right?

While the situation was a little sketchy, Icarus couldn’t help his excitement for it. He watched the stranger dart in close to the badger and snap at it, his own paws dancing beneath him as the badger threw its head back and forth between them, hissing and spitting its anger. Icarus licked his nose, inching to the side to try to approach it from behind.

His eyes flicked up to the stranger one more time. He felt he could trust the guy not to double cross him when he was balls deep in a fight with a badger - he seemed pretty amenable. He just hoped that if the badger managed to latch onto him, the stranger would come to his aid, too.

Icarus focused back on the badger and lunged in, intending to wrap his jaws around the back of the badger’s neck. His teeth sunk in deep and the animal wrenched its head back, squealing, sharp teeth glinting in the light as it kicked and thrashed in an attempt to escape. Icarus tightened his grip, but that didn’t stop the badger from slashing his leg with the sharp claws on its hind feet. He grimaced and shook his head.

The intense shaking stunned it enough for Icarus to lower it back to the ground, placing his paw on its spine and snapping its neck. Panting, Icarus released the animal and inspected his bleeding leg with a sniff.

The badger was quickly done for. The other wolf grabbed it by the neck, and before Scott knew it, the animal was dazed and on the ground, and it was killed. Scott stood there, staring at the other wolf. Now that the badger threat was over, Scott wasn’t really sure what to think of this other wolf.

Scott just stood there, watching him. Could he trust this wolf? And who were they? Scott did not speak. Maybe it was best if he stayed quiet this time and waited for a response from the other one. If his response was kind then… Scott guessed he would be okay.

It hurt, but it would heal. As long as the badger didn’t have rabies or anything. He was hardly worried about that though - it had been a scratch, and the badger didn’t look like it was frothing. He would just need to keep it clean. No need to even bother Opal with it.

Icarus peered back up at the stranger, eyes bright with energetic zeal. “Sorry, I hope I didn’t startle you!”

And where was Mintaka, even? Icarus glanced over his shoulder, searching through the trees for the flash of gold that might betray her lurking presence. But it seemed the girl had fled at the sight of the badger. That was too bad - he had almost been tempted to tell her to bring it back to the Evergreens. Maybe to get her to convince Leas or Rathbone she caught it herself. Then again, he didn’t really know if they were the joking sort. Any of them.

“I was just clearing this badger out of the labyrinth. Can’t have a big grumpy gus like this waddling around while I got packmates to protect,” he chuffed proudly. Then he eyed the stranger, finally taking that moment to assess his condition. “You hungry, bro?”

Scott couldn’t help it; his body jolted when the other male spoke up all of a sudden. His excited voice startled him. Scott looked his way, staring. Listening as he spoke; he had one ear pressed back uncertainly. Pack mates. That meant he had a home, a pack. Somewhere around here. Scott opened his mouth to speak, but closed it again. What should he even say?

He was asked if he was hungry, and Scott eyed he badger with a frown, then looked back up at the male. Was he offering Scott the badger or something? He opened his mouth again. This time words did come out. ’’Juist a… Wee bit.’’ he told the guy.

Icarus smiled brightly at the stranger, rolling the badger’s still warm, plump carcass toward him. “Here, take it. The Vanguard’s got plenty to eat.”

He made sure of that. With Kronos and Epidemic, and even himself regularly hunting, they seemed to be fairly well off. Icarus would admit though, he was a little worried about what might happen come winter. Especially if they were intending to have puppies around again. He’d have to ask Artem and Atalya what their plans were. Assuming, you know… that wasn’t being too nosy or anything. He didn’t want to tread on a sensitive subject.

Then, for just a moment, his thoughts fled to Darcy. His heart squeezed and he found himself missing her. He hoped she would come back before long.

Icarus sniffed and focused back on the stranger. “You a wanderer around these parts?”

The guy rolled the badger in his direction. A food offering, it seemed. The Vanguard’s got plenty, the male said. Scott felt a bit… mocked. Was it because he looked thin? Was he some kind of charity in this wolf’s eyes? Was he weak? He could defend himself, he could hunt. He was thin for different reasons. In fact, he had started to take care of himself again.
He said nothing about it. Did not voice his thoughts.

’’Ummm… ta. Ah mean, thank ye.’’ Huh, he was so used to speaking like his father, now. He looked down at the badger, but did not yet take it. The male had a question. Scott looked back up to him.

’’Ah think sae? Gaun… ever’where an’ nowhere.’’ Scott told him, shrugging a moment. Hmm, this guy had mentioned a pack, though. Scott was curious.

’’Scott Peregrine Blaine, former Guard of ra disbanded Idavoll Circle.’’ he told the male, looking right at him. ’’Tell me aboot yea’n’ yer pack, please.’’
He had been looking for a new pack, after all. Might as well ask around.

Still smiley as ever, Icarus waited for the male’s response. Except when his words actually manifested, they registered more like… a bunch of question marks inside Icarus’ head.

What a peculiar accent!

His eyes widened only slightly with intrigue as he listened, frantically attempting to wrap his head around the male’s manner of speech. Where might he have come from, to talk like this? Was there a group of wolves out there who all spoke in such a rolling, thick brogue? Icarus had been so in awe of the male’s accent that he barely actually heard what he had said.

Everywhere and nowhere. So he must have been a traveler - searching for something, perhaps. And then he introduced himself, mentioned another pack, Idavoll Circle. A name he hadn’t heard before. And finally, a request that made his heart soar. Because if Icarus was going to be proud of anything, it would be of the Twilight Vanguard.

“I’d be delighted to!” Icarus beamed. “My name’s Icarus Dusk. I’m the Chief of the Twilight Vanguard - we’re a pack of nearly a dozen living up the ridge in the labyrinth. It’s pretty chill, uh…”

Oh, wow. He wasn’t sure he ever had to sell his pack like this before. What kinds of things should he say to make it attractive to strangers? How did he manage to dupe Cleo into joining them? Man. He wished Cleo was here. She’d definitely know what to say.

“Lots of food, lots of places to den up in the roots. We’re just a… big group of friends, you know?”

Nailed it.

Scott listened. Icarus Dusk, Twilight Vanguard. A Chief? So that meant he was the leader, no? Wasn’t he a bit too young to lead? Oh well, who was Scott to judge. If his pack was fine, it was fine. The way he spoke of his pack, though. His pack sounded nice but… he didn’t really make it sound like a strong and capable pack… Scott had his doubts.

A big group of friends. That sounded more like a gang than a pack.
Was there no structure?

’’Okay.’’ he said, calmly. ’’Whit aboot yer ranks? Whit’s ra system yer pack operates wi’?’’
Scott would keep asking for a bit longer…
