While there was an urge to keep down toward the ground, there had always been a flaring urge to hit the longer stretch of grounds. It was a pleasureless adventure though, being on the move. Now that he had someone who he could double back with at the end of the day, there had been a second sharpness which had slowed him down from where he had graciously kept on the move.

Reid was far from growing weary, but he could almost sense it. There would be the first snow soon, and it would be an awakening to everyone. It would be enough that they would find themselves anticipating the coming winter, the throes of it. His cold eyes took to the landscape, the tilt of the hills offering a suggestion. No, he would not climb the mountain with the oncoming winter.

His tail flicked though, drawn to a stop. He could almost taste the salt air, the further west he drifted. But he was reluctant to go too far, without Eudora. Getting lost when she had been a serviceable enough companion was a thought he fought against. So he moved through the grasses, in part aimless, determined to cross something useful. Although his journey had been so stale with such things as of late.

AJ didn’t need much to be happy. He pounced after a great big cricket, laughing as it bounced away from him and got lost in the fog, only to chirp and give its position away and lead AJ a merry chase all over again.

He really had quite fine form considering the rocky terrain and the inclement conditions. He pounced with accuracy, and enough enthusiasm with well-placed swipes of his forepaws that if the cricket hadn’t been a giant of its species, it certainly would have been crushed already.

He stopped playing around when he heard the rattle of claws against the rock, muffled as it was by the fog. He let the cricket hop away unheeded this time and let out a friendly wuff.

“Heya, whoever’s there.” He called out an amiable greeting.

((Look you you’re stuck with again, a CHRIS. My apologies to lonely Reid!))

Ohnoes!

Debate to continue to surge toward the cost allowed the lust to linger, his eyes seemed to track along the sky with a lust of calling. It would have pleased to him to have gained an air of guess, although it was not such an easy quest. Although his paws continued to press on, he feared the discomfort of not knowing if he was wasting his time or not.

Not that it would be that much of a surprise, he had wasted more than enough time by this point. The air stumbled out of his lips, and he debated on the damage which plagued him.

The wuff caught him off guard, swinging his head as his fur prickled with the uncertainty. While he took a moment to process, his gruff grunt was an answer enough. No need to be chatty, especially as it took another moment to spot the younger male.

Oh excellent, a real social butterfly! AJ rarely took offense though. Not everybody could possess his stellar charm and conversational skills. He flashed a friendly grin, postured relaxed and non-threatening, and swayed his tail a few ties for good measure.

“Just passing through?” He asked lightly, since a whiff of the male’s scent through the fog was enough to let him know he hadn’t been on the lookout in the time he and Maya had camped out there. Not a pack wolf, which made AJ automatically several degrees friendlier to begin with.

While the darker shaded wolf couldn’t manage his surprise, he did manage to slow down a bit. The other seemed to be all about the coming together and engagement, and Reid found himself wanting to only ask one simple thing.

Headed to the beach,” His words weren’t super lackluster, but it answered the question all the same. His icy gaze turned toward the younger male’s face, refraining from putting on too much of a false attitude. Some days, he simply didn’t imagine how he was managing with Eudora.

You from ‘round here?

There. A throwback. And it was the decision whether or not the conversation remained relevant.

The shortness of the first answer drew a nod, the second, a question, a shake of his head. “Roaming with a pal.” He explained affably. “We like the views here. Not, you know, right now.” He grinned at the mist.

The coldness of this male let AJ know he wasn’t anybody he was interested in befriending, but he remained cheery anyway. You couldn’t meet a BFF a day, or you wouldn’t appreciate the ones you had.

You couldn’t all be Mayas or Forrests, in this valley.

“Well, the beach is a short trip from here, the Rangers pack are on the southern stretch.” He relayed, in case the guy wanted directions. And nothing else? AJ half expected him to just keep on his way without another word.

Head ripped back, and he allowed himself to absorb what little the male could even bare to spare. Did hit hurt one’s brain cells to look like th sunshine was going to come out his own ass at any moment?

Rangers.

The word caught his attention, and his head inclined. “A pack, then?” It wasn’t that h was wary of the thought, but more or less he was a perhaps a dangerous little game to be playing. Did he want to be straying near a pack, this early in the game?

That’s very useful to know.” His voice was quiet, thinking aloud more or less. His eyes shifted to the male, though. “Thank you.

Well, that got his attention. His head came right around and in such a sharp motion AJ felt unease. This guy reminded him suddenly of Astred. Not because he thought he was about to get jumped (again). Because he handled himself with the same sort of purpose that she had.

Not somebody to piss off.

“Quite a big one, I reckon. I only talked to one of their kids who didn’t know much about the place, but my buddy Maya’s been there. They’re big enough to hold two territories we reckon.”

The longer he stood, the more he gravitated toward the thought that the buffoon was less a buffoon that he had originally thought. While it was not immediately a reason to rejoice, it allowed him to shift his weight back. A show of comfort, if anything, although it also poised himself to move a little bit better.

Numbers. Names. A promise of things that he could find. Maya was a girl’s name. Girls were easier to impress, to walk all over.

A rueful look, another head nod as his eyes turned toward the open plains. “Then perhaps I ought to hunt before straying too close.” Some packs were sticklers about hunting grounds; while annoying, he also understood the value. He’d killed a stray mutt or two over trespassing in his time.

A glance back to the blonder wolf, a quirk of the brow. An invite that he hoped would not need to be voiced.

Wow, boring guy was offering to hunt with him! Social buttery that AJ was he rarely turned down an invitation like that. “I can spare a bit of time if you like.” He offered immediately, tail flicking avidly. He turned to sniff the air checking for both prey scents and how far away Maya was. Not far, but he could surprise her with something. He loved to surprise his friends, and Maya was so hilarious when he did something nice for her.

“What are you hoping for?” He was just as happy running after rabbits as he was ruminants. AJ didn’t ask for much in life.

The eagerness out of the boy almost made him want to pose some kind of echo of regret, but he refrained from further allowing such a thing. It was why eyes seemed to be glistening, and the intensity that lingered in his eyes seemed to be better left resisted.

The bigger the better,” Rueful was the answer, his head turning up. His feet strayed, turning back toward the wider open grounds, rather than the sandy coast that was calling his tracks. Something to share a piece of with Eudora out of mercy, one supposed.

Have you seen moose out this way?” His voice was pointed with longing, although he knew his nose itself had not crossed a path. They would find something a bit smaller, equally as satisfying.

“Lead on.” AJ agreed affably, falling in readily at the male’s side. He left enough space between them either could have broken into a run with room not to crash or interfere with the other, clearly no stranger to group hunts.

“No moose, but hot damn I wish, they’re my fave.” He reported. “It’s not really wet enough for them here. They like anywhere that soggy ground lasts more than a week or so.” He inhaled, since the guy had specified wanting something big. AJ was already eager, always enjoying a decent hunt.

“I smell deer though. Regular and somewhere not far off…” He inhaled. “Pronghorn. You ever eaten those?”

The confirmation was all he needed, and he found his eyes turning out toward the plains. He didn’t wait to have some sort of reel and deal about their intent, choosing to simply keep on moving. His ears swung on his head, and he hummed an empathetic note.

From somewhere wet?” The question was quiet, not really caring one way or the other. He preferred the slop of the grounds, the wetlands of his youth. It was harder to work through them, but it was powerful. It was adrenaline-inducing to feel always at a disadvantage.

His nose joined Aj’s in the air, and he considered. “I have never with a pronghorn.” A flick of a smile, an almost humorous one. “Will they be offended by my inexperience?

AJ thought everybody knew that moose liked wetlands, but maybe not. What had this guy been doing with his life? The thought was fleeting when his companion commented he’d never hunted pronghorn and made a joke. The sense of humour was a bit offbeat, but AJ wasn’t here to judge. Anything was an improvement on stiff and formal.

“Let’s go ask one.” He suggested brightly, and with another check of the scent he set off for the nearest of them. “I’m AJ, by the way.” He introduced himself, tossing the name lightly.

The question that had been meant in reference to AJ’s upbringing had gone over his head. Another point in the loss of the tolerance for the male. Or perhaps he simply hadn’t been listening. Nonetheless, his head bobbed.

It was a good choice, anything bigger than a hare was more desired by this point. His tail flagged out, already lowering his stance as he pulled to move in parallel to the other, glancing over his shoulder toward the jovial wolf.

Reid.” There, now that pleasantries were out of the way, he lapsed into silence.

It never would have occurred to AJ to actually do something like go back over a conversation he’d missed a key question in. He bounded on oblivious, grinning to himself a bit to picture Maya’s surprise upon presenting her with a deer leg.

“All right then Reid, let’s hunt us some pronghorn.” He uttered, then fell into quiet himself to track along the scent trail. Like most grazing deer it wasn’t a straight line, and he waved along readily, keen enough he didn’t falter in his step.
