It was hard for Icarus to find a good balance between awkward silence and yammering his face off about the things that were important to him, or things he thought might be important to his new friend. Often, he feared he talked way too much and that others just had a tendency to tune him out. He couldn’t help that he was passionate about most things, and sure, it was a little discouraging when others seemed disinterested in what he had to say, but that just meant he’d have to tweak the amount he talked about it next time. But in the same way, he didn’t want to make it seem like he was an unfriendly guy by just being weirdly quiet the whole walk. So he did what any nervous, uncertain guy would do, and just tentatively tried to make conversation while keeping his cool. Even if it was punctuated with strange periods of silence and then a burst of words out of nowhere.

Eventually, and thankfully, they reached the borders of the labyrinth. Icarus paused to throw a short howl into the air, announcing his presence to his packmates in case anybody was in need of him. He had wandered out to take care of that badger, after all. Then his tail flicked and he continued walking, tilting his head toward Scott. “The labyrinth is full of these big, twisty trees. I grew up here - they made for an interesting obstacle course when I was younger,” he laughed.

Scott had the badger in his jaws, carrying it to Icarus’ home. It was a little bit hard to walk here, because Scott was used not used to the terrain. Aaaand he was carrying food. Icarus had been talking on and off, but Scott was not bothered by it. In fact, he kind of liked listening, preferred it over talking. And he could not really talk much as he had the badger in his mouth.

When Icarus told him of the trees, he nodded once, and hummed through a mouthful of fur and stuff. He he had not eaten the badger, because he wasn’t really sure if he wanted to eat. Maybe he could just… put it in their cache. Would be a nice gift? Even though Scott had not killed it… But, oh well. He didn’t really have much use for it.

He glanced around the area as they moved, and wondered how much further they would walk. He could smell the borders. Had they already passed it?

Oh, yeah. He had almost forgotten that Scott was carrying the badger. Now he felt a little bad - he had basically killed this big bulky monster and made Scott carry it around after offering it to him to eat! And then! He didn’t even give the guy time to actually eat!! Wow Icarus.

The masked boy paused where he was and eyed the badger, leaning onto his haunches. “Did you want to stop for a bite to eat?” he asked, tongue slipping from his lips to touch his nose. Maybe they could share it. Icarus could always go for more food in his belly.

Huh? Bite to eat? Oh. The badger. Scott stopped, and dropped the animal so he could finally speak. ’’Na, tis… fine. Tae be honest Ah wanted tae pat it in yer cache.’’ he told Icarus. That was the one reason he had not eaten anything yet. Even though Scott had not killed the badger, he wanted to give it to Icarus and the others. It was the least he could do for having Icarus show him his home.

’’Sae, is this yer hame?’’ Scott asked, after a moment of silence, and he looked around. This place looked interesting. There sure were a lot of big trees. Their roots went everywhere.

Icarus nodded at Scott’s response. Though he had been hoping the somewhat thin male would eat, he could respect his decision to offer it up for the Vanguard. “Sure!” he answered, directing his body to begin leading Scott toward the nearest cache. Icarus was sure there was one around here somewhere.

He’d have to tell the guy to pick something out of it if he did want to eat, at some point.

His head cocked back to Scott at the question. “Sure is! This is where I was born and raised. My pack was called the Northern Order, but ah - some stuff happened while I was gone, a while ago. I came back and found the place empty. Fortunately, some friends of mine agreed to stay with me. I just couldn’t stomach the thought of leaving the labyrinth empty. It deserves to be somebody’s home.”

It was a long story. He still didn’t know all the details of why the Order had disbanded in his absence, but every time he thought about it, he had to convince himself it wasn’t his fault. Of course it wasn’t. It was Solomon’s.

“Your old pack, Idavoll Circle-” was that the right name? “Were they in the valley too?”

This guy was so excited. Scott had a hard time keeping up with his level of energy. He had always been… more reserved but even now after his father passed away, he did not really feel like being as outgoing he used to be as a pup. He listened quietly to Icarus’ story, but he realized he really had never heard of the Northern Order before. While he was curious, he knew not to pry. He wasn’t like that.

Icarus asked about the Idavoll Circle, then, and Scott frowned a little.
’’Aye, born in that pack, at ra Harlequin Meadow. Wis born an’ raised in this glen – err, valley – tae. Fur a… little bit…’’ he explained. He had been here until the pack fell apart, and then he had left. To go elsewhere. And then, he came back. Huh.

Scott frowned some more. ’’Ah hae an important quaistion, Icarus.’’ he began. He needed to get this off his chest, because he was uncertain.
’’Is ma speech bothering ye?’’

The frown on the male’s maw hadn’t gone unnoticed by him. He twitched an ear, memorizing the name of the place where they had been located - Harlequin Meadow. A sense of familiarity nagged in him about the name. A meadow… he wondered if that was the flowery meadow Icarus had visited a few times in search of herbs. And then his thoughts drifted to the rotund boy he had met there. Too bad Icarus hadn’t caught his name, but then again, he wasn’t sure he’d want to revisit his memory of him. He hadn’t been overly friendly, despite Icarus’ invitation for him to visit.

He doubted he would come, anyway.

In any case, it sounded like Scott was like him - born and raised in the valley, for a little while. Until something had taken him away from it. Most likely the disbanding of his pack, as Icarus recalled.

At Scott’s mention of the question, Icarus perked up and grinned. “Shoot,” he said. And when the question came, his ears splayed, his eyes widening with slight alarm. “Bothering me? Of course not! Why, did I say something?”

Leave it to Icarus to dumbly offend someone without realizing it.

“No, dude, I think it’s really cool. You said you learned it from your father, and I can totally respect that.”

Icarus said Scott’s speech was not bothering him, so Scott guessed that was true. Unless Icarus was lying to not hurt his feelings. Scott did not really know what to believe anymore. A lot of wolves lied. But, Icarus went on, and he sounded genuine. He was kind. Other wolves had not been as kind to him. ’’Na, tis juist… Some wolves Ah met dinnae like mah speech. Fun it very annoying… Likelie thought ah hud a speech impediment. Ah mean, Ah kin speak mair like ye, if tis necessary.’’

Scott just… threw that offer out there. Icarus seemed accepting of his speech, but would the others be? He solely spoke like this to honor his father. It was not like he did not know their language. Though, he was been out of it for a long time. He wondered, what if there were others here who disapproved of his speech, or him? He doubted he would want to stay, then.

For a moment, Icarus had been truly concerned he said something stupid to make Scott think he didn’t like his manner of speech. He took a few seconds to feverishly review everything he could remember saying in the past little while - they had talked about packs and their family and all that, but did Icarus say anything about… speech? Oh, he couldn’t even remember. What an idiot he was!

Thankfully, Scott advises him that it wasn’t anything he said, but rather the opinions of other wolves he’d met. Icarus knitted his brows and offered the other boy a sympathetic look. Some wolves really had all the nerves…

“No, Scott, you shouldn’t have to change the way you are just to appease some other wolves,” he said firmly. And it wasn’t even based out of sympathy - it was just the way Icarus operated naturally. “If you’re worried it might be a problem here, I assure you, one of the Vanguard’s most important qualities is our acceptance of everyone who lives here. We’re all misfits in some way or another. Came from nowhere to find a family in each other. It would be wrong of us to criticize someone when we ourselves aren’t perfect.”

Maybe, just maybe, Icarus felt a little too impassioned about the subject. He had faced adversity, too. His thoughts fled to Nayomi for a moment, her accusations that he wasn’t good enough - wasn’t smart enough to be Chief. His lips pursed subconsciously, and then he shook his head.

“You talk however you wanna talk, man. If anybody gives you guff about it, then they can talk to me.”

He didn’t think anybody would, anyway.

Icarus spoke more of the pack, and Scott listened. It sounded good, living here. But he wasn’t sure yet. He needed to see first, needed to know. He only knew Icarus so far, and no one else. He wanted to meet the others too before he made any decisions. They could live by any rules, but there were always a few who strayed. It would cause arguments, like it had with the Idavoll Circle. So, Scott did not say much more on the matter, and held in a sigh. ’’Okay.’’ was all he said, looking around the Labyrinth once again, taking in his surroundings, and the details. He wondered if anyone else was home.

Icarus fell silent and tipped his gaze toward Scott. He hadn’t realized how passionate he had gotten about the whole subject until Scott replied with only one word: okay. His lips pursed slightly, feeling a little silly now for having gone on his tirade. But maybe Scott just wasn’t a naturally chatty guy. He just hoped he understood that Icarus would fight for his freedom to talk how he wanted - it wasn’t like it was problematic for anyone besides preference.

They reached the cache before long, and Icarus pawed at the fallen boughs that had been used to cover the partially dug-out hole. There wasn’t much in there - they seemed to go through them quickly - although one particular rabbit was beginning to smell rather strongly. He stepped back and gestured for Scott to deposit the badger in the cache. “You sure you don’t want to eat? There’s a rabbit in there I think might go bad soon,” he remarked, craning his neck to drag the rabbit out of the hole by one of its stiff legs. “We could share it?”

Ugh. Was he too pushy? Actually, his stomach was growling now in the presence of food. He wasn’t being pushy. He was just hungry. Yeah. And being efficient. Yeah.

They arrived at the cache, and Scott put in the badger, at the look Icarus gave him. Without any words, it was tossed in there. Quick and simple. Now he had put something in the cache, and it made him feel more welcome.

Icarus spoke of eating, again, and Scott looked at him. Though, he mentioned a rabbit that might go bad soon and that… Scott did not mind eating that. It probably was still edible, but on one else wanted it? Actually, he could smell it. It was not hard to pick the food out of the pile. Icarus was a try-hard, wasn’t he? It made Scott smile a little, amused.

’’Okay, soonds guid. Sharing, Ah mean.’’ he responded.
As long as they ate the rabbit Icarus had pointed out.

Icarus’ grin brightened as Scott finally agreed to eat with him. He placed a paw on the rabbit’s head and grabbed the rabbit’s hind leg, tugging until he had torn the rabbit in two, a grisly stretch of crimson between each half. He nosed the front half toward Scott and then settled into a crouch, picking away at his meal contentedly. Maybe after this, he would track down some of his packmates and show off his new friend.

(wanna wrap this up?)
