Larisa drifted along beneath the canopy of pine trees. She could still see the sky above, a bleak sort of gray where clouds covered all features of the sky and the sun wasn’t strong enough to burn it’s way through them. She lifted her nose; pine and salt were the scents of her home, something she had become very used to. She smelled Crixus as usual, but little else of wolves. She did not regret their home being isolated and quiet, but it was making finding recruits a more difficult task.

She wondered where Kaya had gotten to. Perhaps the woman had abandoned them. Larisa would not hold out hope that her delay meant she was returning with many worth wolves. She wondered if Crixus had had much more luck finding worthwhile strangers.

The pale woman let out a long howl for her mate. She didn’t feel the need to call too loudly as her voice would surely be heard no matter where Crixus was on the island. At least, she was pretty sure he was on the island at the moment.

Crixus, too, was wondering over Kaya’s absence. He had expected her to be gone for a smaller amount of time, for certain, and while he didn’t think it was in her character to simply abandon without saying something. Had she gone off and died? Been intercepted? His fur bristled, agitation brewing as he stalked back and forth on the beach, as if standing here waiting would make her return. Bearing gifts, preferably.

His mate’s call was a happy distraction, and he turned toward the sound nearly at once to pad off in her direction, lifting his head and giving a short, low howl in response to let her know he was coming.

Larisa turned at the sound of Crixus’ howl and padded gently to meet him. She wore as a smile as she trotted through the trees. For all the things that had not fallen perfectly into place, having Crixus had been an immense blessing that she would not discount.

It was a shame that Abaddon had chosen to travel elsewhere, even more so because he didn’t wish to stay with the family he had found. Perhaps he was looking for his children though, Larisa supposed she could understand that some.

Her eyes scanned the trees, looking for Crixus’ pale form among the green. The grass and bushes of the forest were steadily turning yellow and brown, but at least the pine trees would give their home some color through the winter.

Crixus leaped up a shelf of rock and ducked into the trees, trotting along then at an easy pace. It took a few moments, but before long he caught sight of a swatch of white among the branches. “Larisa,” he greeted, assuming she would hear him without his having to raise his voice. It wasn’t as if there was a crowd here.

He’d really thought by now he would have things going more his way.. but if this was all he had for now, it would have to be enough. Still, he was disconcerted. He’d gone from one companion, to two, to three, and then stairstepped right back down to one just as quickly. Hopefully Kaya would return with something useful in the way of news.

Thinking of news of the valley minded him of Tesla, and he wondered if he would see her again anytime soon.. or ever. Surely the rest of the valley couldn’t be so fine as to draw her away forever. And what of that Felicity, who shared Kaya’s surname? So many things to think about.

Larisa smiled sweetly and her tail wagged as her cousin came into sight. “Crixus,” she practically purred at him, moving in close enough to nuzzle gently at his neck as an official sort of greeting.

“It’s been so quiet around here the last few days…” She started. It had been quiet since that horribly stupid wolf had swum all the way out here against her warning to do so. At least no trouble had arisen, but then, nothing helpful had happened either. “I’ve traveled just a little and met a few wolves recently. A few were interesting, but nothing all that promising.” She wanted Crixus to know what she had been up to. Perhaps they’d have to range a little further before winter set in. Or, accept that they’d be spending winter only in each other’s company. She turned to glance at him, seeing if he had anything to add.

Nuzzling his mate in return, he lipped her ear gently and then sat down before her. His paws were a bit damp from walking on the beach, a few grains of sand stuck to them, and he brushed them away idly as he listened to her speak. When she finished, he gave a brief sigh. “I met a female with a very interesting name out on the prairie- not bad hunting grounds, by the way. She looked terribly familiar to me, and when she revealed her last name, it became apparent why. Apparently, our Miss Silvano has family in the valley.”

It occurred to him that maybe she had found some other family members, and had gone off with them, abandoning Crixus, Larisa, and their cause, despite all of her talk of belief in it. He huffed, shifting his weight. At lease they had the island, and each other. Abaddon had been gone longer than he had expected, which niggled at the back of his mind, but he had to continually remind himself that his brother had been disinclined to join his pack, anyway. Maybe he’d found his children and gone off to live happily ever after. Or maybe he’d fallen off a cliff. It wasn’t in Crixus to assume, for now.

Larisa folded her ears down flat against her skull as they were nipped at. She didn’t need to instigate another moment of having Crixus’ heafty bulk holding her down while he chewed at her. It wasn’t an unpleasant memory, but she was trying to discuss the pack here.

The pale woman lifted an interested eyebrow at the mention of other Silvano wolves. Was Kaya close to her family and this could be the start of them growing their hopeful-pack further, or would the large woman’s family become a detriment to them if they did not agree with her? Well, it would be a question for Kaya if she ever returned.

“I did speak with a wolf in the bay…” How best to bring up Pharaoh without enraging Crixus at the bare mention of another male. “The wolf was staying with the Evergreens, south of here, but he mentioned being from a pack on the coast that contained twenty wolves. Clearly, enough that they were happily lending aid to the Evergreens. The wolf was completely pompous and ridiculous.” Larisa wrinkled her nose as she lifted it haughtily into the air, clearly she was too good for the wolf she had met. “But I think we should be careful dealing with them. Our pack needs to be large and strong before we could match anything like that. We ought not be antagonistic to our neighbors, weak and pathetic as they may be.” Larisa did truly want a quiet life on the island, at least for the time being. She wanted to have a few seasons worth of pups, to feel like her family was growing and strong, too strong for anyone to attack them. “I played along and he thinks us a harmless bunch. Let the other nearby wolves all think that. I’d make a good diplomat you know.” She dared a little wink at Crixus, part serious but part amused. She had done a good job gaining his favor. She’d protected their family by making him think she was a much sweeter wolf than she was.

Crixus settled himself to listen to what Larisa was telling him of the wolf she’d met on the shore of the bay. The mention of the coastal pack with twenty wolves caused an unexpected flare of jealousy within him. How did that pack have twenty, and he himself only two, or perhaps three? The green eyed monster simmered down when he reminded himself of the general quality of the valley’s wolves. Likely only one or two of those pack wolves would be worth their salt in his eyes.

Still, it was impressive to have such a gathering that one could simply send members off to help ailing packs. Which shouldn’t even exist. He huffed. “If they’re unable to care for themselves, they should disband,” he muttered, annoyed that some do-gooder was trying to essentially help sub-par creatures to flourish despite everything in nature being against them. This was how bloodlines were weakened over time. It disgusted him.

His mate brought up a good point in not inflaming the bigger packs, and he nodded his assent to her wisdom. “You’re right, of course, and you did well. Diplomat indeed.” He grinned at her then, placing a lick between her ears in approval. He was gazing off in the distance, though, distracted by thoughts of those who had more than he. It caused his hackles to raise somewhat, subconsciously. “What was this wolf’s name?” he asked, as it belatedly occurred to him. He wondered what could have made him so pompous. Perhaps only the knowledge of such numbers behind him?

Larisa bumped her muzzle gently against his shoulder and hummed in agreement about the pack. They likely ought to disband, and whatever wolves were actually worthy would survive, and the others would not. That ought to be the way of the world.

At least he agreed with her, and that was one thing. Larisa did not need them to pick fights with groups that were larger then themselves, or really anyone who might cause trouble. Larisa told strangers she wanted a quiet life, and she did. If only worthwhile wolves ever crossed her path again it would be for the best in her mind.

“His name was Pharaoh Proleator. He called himself ‘prince’ for what it’s worth, though I don’t see how that fool could have been any sort of royalty.” She thought Crixus might have enjoyed feeling incredulous about it alongside her. “I wonder if it might be worth it for me to visit other packs and seek out some more friendly relationships. This wolf seemed more than willing to blab about anything that came to mind, I’d surely be able to find out more useful things.” Not that Crixus couldn’t, but her cousin was large, and male, and no one could deny that Larisa could create a sweet expression when she wished to.

He couldn’t help but bark a laugh at the self-styled “Prince” Pharaoh Proleator the Preposterous Prick. He sobered, though, when Larisa suggested she might visit other packs, to seek out potential alliances. He supposed this wasn’t the worst idea in the world- in fact, it was likely a good one. Clearly they were making little headway in just waiting for others to seek them out.

He turned his head, frowning, eyes scanning the trees. Though mostly evergreen pines, a few deciduous specimens were also present, and they flamed in tones of scarlet and ocher, more dropping to the ground below by the day.

He didn’t like the idea of her traveling alone, but neither did he wish to leave the island uninhabited for any stretch of time- especially not considering the occasional intruder they’d faced thus far. “You mustn’t go so far as to not return before all of the leaves are gone,” he said, narrowing his eyes before turning away from the glare of the sun. “The crossing will only be more perilous as winter draws nearer, and I need you here and safe.”

Crixus seemed to agree to her plan, if a little hesitantly. She gave a nod. “Of course I won’t be gone long, only short trips. I don’t intend to venture across the entire valley, but we could use someone out searching for more wolves, or more information. Besides, it seems like Kaya might not even be coming back.” She sighed a little. The large woman had seemed promising enough, but perhaps she had simply run off on her own.

“And I will of course be back for the winter,” she purred, suddenly a bit flirty as she leaned forward and gave a lick across Crixus’ muzzle at the idea. She didn’t wish to be in heat far away from her cousin at all, much less across the valley in some other packs territory that she did not know. Larisa would return before the snow fell.
