A single black splodge undulated across the horizon, suspended on a shimmering mirage where the sky had bled into the earth.
She felt the crust of the desert crumble underfoot with each stride, each stroke of raw beating will made into flesh and blood, and it was the sweetest sound. A lesser wolf, or maybe a wiser one, might have given up already. But Deirdre was neither of those things. Beneath her skin her muscles screeched from exertion and her joints ached, yet she drove forward still. She had never touched on the limits of her endurance, never had to tease that edge of life and death before. Not that she were complaining; Deirdre was grateful for her fortuity, but it felt good to discover the depths of herself now. If she were an ocean, she had been living in the reef. Out here, alone, testing how hard her legs could lurch and thrust, how fast her heart could pound, she was descending into the abyss.
Almost literally. She was not unaware of the vignette creeping in around the desert-scape before her. Soon, she promised herself. I will rest soon. Just a little farther…
The hot air had set her throat aflame and Deirdre swallowed painfully, but the burn was meagre in the shadow of her wounded ego as finally, she slowed to a trot, and then a walk, and then fell over in a heap. As if a god or perhaps fate itself were even aware of such a small and insignificant creature, what little clouds there were gathered over the blistering sun and gifted her a few moments of bliss. When her eyes slid open again, ahead was a concave hollow in the side of a rocky outcrop. A more perfect bed, Deirdre had never seen.
And so eventually, the black shape scraped itself up and disappeared into the mouth of the desert, where once surely such a mulish beast had been forged.
