The boy had plowed excitedly through what forest existed between the spot where he had met Maurdie and Ace and the place where the caverns were. After the initial confusion the idea of bringing his father’s sister home was an increasingly exciting one. Auberon loved both of his sisters a whole lot, so it never crossed his mind that his father would be anything but ecstatic to see his own sister again.

“Ma! Da!” He called happily as he came into the clearing outside the caverns. He really hoped they were both home and not out doing other things. Otherwise he’d just have to give Maurdie a tour or something until they got back. Ma was usually home at least, she didn’t go out often.

Auberon glanced back over his shoulder. “We’re here.” He announced readily, nodding forward towards his home.

If things went the way she hoped so deeply for, she would be face to face with Rathbone in just a short while, now. She followed the dark boy easily, attention rapt on her surroundings. It was weird, after so long without either of them, to find them both in such a short time. She wondered, did Rathbone know Edghar had been so near? And if he did, why wasn’t Edghar here instead of off causing trouble for a pack? There were still so many questions surrounding her litter-mates death.

Then again, it was probably better that Edghar had not been here, mucking things up for Rathbone and his little family.

She slowed to a stop when the boy did, listened when Auberon called for his parents. She perked up, nose twitching. She could smell him more clearly now. She’d caught his scent sporadically on the way in, but it was nothing like this. He was everywhere.

Maurdie just smiled at the boy when he announced that they were there, emotion and anxiousness clogging her throat. Would Rathbone want her here, after so long? Would he allow her into the little life he’d built as readily as she hoped? Her little brother had done well for himself, it seemed. He had a home, a woman, and a bunch of little feet running amok. Happiness, too, she hoped.

She waited, shifting from foot to foot.

Ace had been curious about this kid not knowing Rufus and Savannah so he had followed the two, anyway. A quick investigation before going home. He would go home again after he had found out what he needed to know… the idea that Rufus and the others were gone. Rufus, Savannah, Leif. Who else was gone? The scents here were so different.

The boy stayed in the background. Not really sure what to do.

[Skippable unless addressed/until he can ask anyone about Rufus and the others???]

Rathbone heard for call for Ma and Da. He had been napping. With a yawn, he lifted himself to his paws and padded over with a faint woof. His tail swayed faintly at his hocks.

He could smell an unknown scent drifted into the caverns. Had Auberon brought someone new? Rathbone became more curious, a little bit more awake. His dull claws ticked across the ground.

(Arriving next round unless they come and meet him.)

The excited yell of her son brought Leas’ head around and her ears perked towards the entrance to the caverns. She knew Auberon to be the most adventurous of the pups, the most likely to go out and find something strange or interesting in the trees. He did not sound worried, and it put Leas’ mind at ease some.

She turned to the exit in time to see Rath just ahead and she hurried towards her mate. She gave him a gentle nudge on the hip and a smile. “I wonder what our son has found,” she chatted idly, falling into step beside him.

[Arriving with Rath next round]

Auberon continued forward a few more steps before turning to smile back at his two companions. He was glad both had come with and were going to meet his family. They were both quiet, and seemed a little nervous, though he couldn’t puzzle out while exactly.

His ears turned towards the bark from his father and he smiled wider. “Come on, we can go meet them.” He nodded, trying to usher them both forward towards the caverns entrance. He was just plain excited about bringing two new, nice wolves home with him.

Trotting forward again he ducked down into the cavern entrance and grinned at his parents when he spotted them both, though he waited - for once - so as not to spoil the surprise of his new friends as long as they joined him soon.

Maurdie wasted no time following the boy towards the caverns when he moved off again. Ace was near close to her side, but again, her attention was elsewhere. This time, her eyes were locked on the caverns the boy had slipped into. She could hear voices from inside - a bark, earlier. Even with the distortion from the cave, Maurdie picked up on the familiarity of it, and she hesitated, ears flicking back.

But Rathbone was in there, she was sure.

Taking a breath, she followed the boy in. She paused at his flank, eyes landing first on a dark wolf, a female. His mother, she thought. Her attention stayed for just a fraction of a second, and then her eyes were on a lighter wolf.

Rathbone. The boy had brought her straight to her brother and she could only stare, wide eyed and disbelieving. After so long, he was right there in front of her. It hadn’t seemed completely real when the boy had spoken his name - but now? There was no doubting. She was staring right at her brother. That was his face - his pale blue eyes. She let loose a wet laugh, full of disbelief and mirth. She wanted to bowl him over and shower him in all the affection she could muster, but would he accept it? Her tail swayed at her heels. “Rathbone,” A quiet murmur, a thousand questions all in one word.

She took a hesitant step forward, hope lighting up an aging face.

Rathbone grunted softly in response to Leas’ remark. He saw his son first. The boy was taller than him, now, remarkably. He wondered who might have blessed him with such genes.

And then he saw her. Rathbone drew to a halt, suddenly much more awake. There was a smile when he said her name, “Maurdie.” Even his tail made a wag.

Until he remembered everything. How he had left them, cast himself out with hardly a goodbye. How he had left not only his family behind, but an entire pack, even if it had been disbanded. There had still been a legacy there. Edghar had always been able to see it, even if he could not.

“Where’s Edghar?” he asked, smile faded by now. Was he here, too? Come to take a look at his new pack and drag it down to hell with him.

It only took a few more steps to hear her son calling others forward and then she caught sight of the dark boy. She really ought to stop thinking of them all as tiny children, her son was the biggest wolf in the pack, but she figured she’d always see him and be reminded of the first moments she saw him.

She flicked her eyes next to the timber woman following behind Auberon. She greeted Rath, and Rath greeted her, leaving Leas with her brows knitting together in confusion. Their tails both wagged, clearly happy to see each other. At least until Rath asked another question which seemed to dampen his mood again.

Leas pressed a little closer to her mate, touching her shoulder to his. Who was this strange woman that he knew? She glanced back to Auberon, the boy must know something more, he’d brought the woman here.

Auberon padded happily forward, a little bounce in his step. He heard Maurdie’s pawsteps behind him, and watched his parents as the older woman came into their view as well. His father looked happy - almost an odd expression to see on him - and his mother looked worried, but that was normal as far as the boy was concerned.

He made a little circle of them and plopped down into a sitting position beside his mother, leaning to give her a little nuzzle when she looked at him. Quirking his head to the side he wondered who Edghar was. Obviously it was not a girls name, but was that another wolf that his da knew that Auberon had never heard of before.

“I met Maurdie in the forest, with another wolf, Ace, he was looking for some others too.” The boy piped in to anyone who cared to listen. His tail beat against the floor of the caverns; hadn’t he done such a great job bringing them here?

That smile made it all the more difficult to keep her distance, but with the lady and the pup both at Rathbone’s side, she was feeling a bit like she was’t allowed to get too close. She wanted so badly to press her face into the fur at his neck, his shoulder, just inhale his scent and re-memorize everything she’d been without for so long. Instead, she just looked, took in everything she could with her eyes if she weren’t allowed close.

His voice focused her attention once more, and her ears pinned at his question, tail stilling and falling limp. She wished, for just a moment, that Rathbone would have left it alone. That he would have just been happy that she was here and maybe forget about Edghar for a moment. She wanted to relish in finding her brother, but now the pain of losing Edghar was brought back to the forefront. She dipped her head, expression losing it’s light.

It’s just me.” It was hard to say and her voice was quiet, begging for understanding - she didn’t want to elaborate. She just wanted it to be clear so she could push through it and focus once more on Rathbone and the fact that he was okay. Edghar needed to stay buried. It was just them, now.

Just her.

Had he left her, too? He had thought that the two had grown distant — after all, Edghar had confided only in him about his plans of assassination — but he had never thought that his half-brother would end up abandoning his only littermate. Despite her solemnness, Rathbone could not contain himself.

“D’you know where he’s gone?” he asked. Even a direction would do, just so he could confirm Edghar was not nearby. Some part of him was almost desperate to know where he was.

Or maybe she had been the one to leave him. While it would not be surprising, it would have been rather unexpected. Uncharacteristic, he thought. But one could only handle Edghar for so long, especially alone.

“Uh, this is my, uh, half-sister, Maurdie Schmidt,” Rathbone said to Leas. “Edghar’s her brother. Maurdie, this is my mate, Leas.”

His eyes flickered to the tiny white wolf, making sure that the male knew he had not gone entirely ignored, but Maurdie had his full attention.

She listened to her son, though what the boy said was not entirely useful exactly. Her name again, Leas tried to pay better attention, and she finally noticed the other wolf who had accompanied her son as well. She hadn’t even thought that he might have brought another wolf with.

Her mate and Maurdie were talking about someone else, who Leas had as little of a clue about as she did about Maurdie herself. She nudged affectionately at Rath again when he did finally turn to provide an introduction. All at once it seemed to fit together in a way that made sense. His sister. Leas hadn’t even known he’d had a sister, had she? And he had a brother too?

With a little puff of a breath out at the new information she nodded towards Maurdie though, her expression friendly. The older wolf looked kindly, and Rath’s family was her family after all, right? “H-hello,” she greeted a little shyly, but smiled at Maurdie. Normally when she met new wolves she had no reason to hope they would become her friends or not, but in this case, she very much wanted the other woman to like her.

Auberon couldn’t really tell if things were happy or not. Everyone seemed sort of happy, and his father did confirm that Maurdie was his sister, which made her…something to Auberon he was sure. The boy hadn’t ever needed the word aunt before in his life, he’d never had an aunt before.

His tail brushed across the floor and he simply watched and listened to the conversation. Glancing around he wanted to catch sight of the white wolf again. Maybe Auberon could give him a tour while the others talked about…whatever they wanted to talk about.

[He’s probably skippable from here on out unless directly spoken too]

He didn’t get it. Maurdie would have to say it out loud, once more, and she really didn’t want to. She let a sigh slip free, steeling herself. She tried to appear nonchalant, unaffected, but her brows furrowed not a moment later, ears still flat against her head. “He’s dead, Rathbone.” She glanced apologetically at the two wolves at his side. This was not news she wanted to share with an audience, but she had little choice here. Would he be relieved, she wondered? Or would he rather it was Edghar at his doorstep right now? She had not been blind to how much her brother had favored Rathbone but she had lived with it.

She only hoped Rathbone could forgive her for her silence, for allowing Edghar to sink his claws into him, try molding him into what he wanted. She had always been afraid to speak against her brother for fear he might cast her out. All she had wanted back then was for her family to remain together. It hadn’t lasted long, but it was in the past. She was here, now, standing before Rathbone and the life he had built without them. She couldn’t help but smile softly at all three of them. She wondered what might have happened if he hadn’t left them; wondered what might have become of the three of them if they’d remained together.

She thought, as Rathbone introduced the girl at his side as his mate, perhaps the things that had happened had happened for a reason. Rathbone might not be here, with a woman and children, if he hadn’t fled. She had forgiven him a long time ago.

Her smile only grew, began to chase away the melancholy, when the dark girl smiled at her - a shy greeting. “It’s good to meet you, Leas, dear.”

Ace watched the reunion in utter silence, not really paying attention even though it looked like he was keeping an eye on things. Hah, he could barely see their faces, only smell them well enough. And the pup had been right. No scent of Rufus or Savannah. Shit.

He remained quiet, not sure what to say…

[Still skippable.]
