For the past few days he’d been feeling the heaviness and static in the air, and it was a relief to make up to thunderclouds. Bucky deemed it’s break around midday, which gave him time to complete a lap of the borders after waking at dawn then send up a howl as he trotted back, close to the cache on the hillside now. There were a few things he wanted to clear up, especially now Miro had departed. Bucky had been sad to see the hardworking healer go, especially with the cold season coming up, but he didn’t want Tamaska to feel alone, especially if she wanted to join the Rangers officially.

“Tamaska? Sienna?” He woofed. Tamaska had been keeping to herself a little as she recover, throwing Sienna into contrast - he had noticed her helping at the borders, contributing well to the cache. Also spending time with Wayfarer, something that filled him with uncertainty, but at least she wasn’t avoiding him like some wolves…

He came to a halt at the foot of the hill, now dusted with the light rain falling. His eye was drawn to his osprey who was taking the chance to hunt over the beach before the weather broke, and a smile edged his muzzle.

The cache. The thing that made her actually do anything with her life other than wait. Wait for the winter and then wait that out, too. However, if there was anything, it gave her a rather good exercise, running back and forth, hunting along the territory and filling up the two caches on both of the lands that the Rangers have claimed. Today, though, she had been taking a break to rest her muscles. With the onslaught of rain and thunderstorms, prey had been hiding away burrowed within the ground, hidden from thought, mind, and smell. And there was nothing she could do about it other than wait.

Luckily, she had stocked the caches enough to last for a few weeks of the harsh winter and - it was coming, and it was coming soon. Sienna had been dozing within a makeshift abandoned den that she had found - perhaps belonging to a fox or coyote.

She only had to do a little digging to make it appropriate.

And she had done just that, now curled snuggly into a small ball, and sleeping her worries away. Her ears perked at the summoning call and she peeked a yellow eye open from the fluff of her tail. Raising her head, she remained still for a moment, trying to pinpoint who was making the call; rarely had she ever had someone call for her. Bucky. A spark of recognition crossed her face before she got up, stretched, and started over to him. She offered a small howl in response. She was coming.

Bucky herd Seinna call back first and let out a bark so she’d known she’d been heard. He stepped lithely over a few rocks and crouched down at the stream to drink, lapping up several mouthfuls of bitterly cold water. He shook himself off afterwards, scattering a few drops from his muzzle. He was glad of his ridiculously thick coat (finally, FINALLY done shedding!) at this time of year.

Tamaska was having a rough day. Her head was hurting, which was almost normal for her now, but her mood was just dark. She didn’t know why it was a bad day—maybe it was just the oncoming storm—but it was. Maybe it was the lack of activity due to her injury. Perhaps it came with the lack of memory of her family that pricked at her day and night. All of those things, mixed with the headache, created an awful combination that made her feel listless.

Bad moods were rare for Tamaska, but since her concussion, they’d been occurring more frequently. Now that she’d been healing for a month or so and her symptoms were fading, she’d been more like herself, though there were still days like this one where she didn’t feel anything like herself.

At Bucky’s call, though, the girl couldn’t help but feel glad. She’d have something to do today, even if just for a little! The air was punctuated by a different call as well, one that she didn’t recognize. Strangers were never a problem to Tamaska, though hopefully this one was pleasant enough that she didn’t dampen her mood further.

She stiffly rose from her bed, nestled under the roots of a fallen tree which she’d dug out, and called back. A quick stretch preceded, and then she set out toward Bucky’s call.

((Kay so Sienna’s plots moved on from this point so she’s not going to be joining this thread, so we can carry on with this one Sabby dear instead of making a new thread, and assume Sienna never showed up))

Bucky thought he heard Seinna’s pawsteps heading the opposite direction before he heard Tamaska calling. He barked back to her too, and tiring of waiting around set off to meet her. He had been glad to see Tamaska felt secure enough to make herself a den though, and he made sure when he was hunting to sometimes leave a rabbit or a fresh fish outside it.

If Tamaska didn’t have anybody else in this valley that she could remember, Bucky wanted to make sure she understood she could rely on the Rangers.

“Hey Tamaska.” He woofed when he caught sight of the girl. “How you feeling?”

She caught sight of Bucky—and only Bucky—soon enough. So much for strangers. The woman didn’t quite mind, though. At least she knew what to expect from Bucky.

At his greeting, she offered him a tight smile. “I’ve been better,” she admitted, not quite happy enough to fake a good mood for her friend’s sake. “I wish these damn—er—darn headaches would go away.”

She paused for a moment, a bit surprised that she’d let such a nasty word slip from her tongue. Thinking it was one thing, but saying it was to be vehemently avoided.

“What about yourself?” Maybe if she changed the subject, he wouldn’t notice.

Tamaska was still having headaches. Bucky’s own brow furrowed in worry at this news. Especially now Miro was gone, he wasn’t sure what to do.

He didn’t bat an eyelid at the word damn though, barely even noticing when she corrected herself. “Still?” He scraped the ground absently with a forepaw. “Maybe you ought to go talk to the Tribe healer up the beach.” He suggested, floating the idea.

“Me? Oh.” He didn’t get asked that often and he fumbled for a moment for an actual answer. “Okay. Worried about winter, and the coming storms. Curse of a pack leader, is worrying about your pack.”

She certainly had the energy for a trek up the beach, though it didn’t sound appealing. Her face scrunched up a bit at his words, something she would have suppressed, had she been in a better mood.

“I suppose I should,” she conceded reluctantly. “Though, I don’t know if I trust myself in this state to find him. Or… her.” What was the ‘Tribe,’ anyhow? How could she find something she’d never heard of?

His mention of the oncoming winter, and his worries, eased her mood. Bucky seemed like such a genuinely-kind person. And he was real enough to admit his concerns, too. Tamaska admired him. Even if she was in a sour mood, she couldn’t help but offer him a real smile.

“I’m sure everything will be okay. From what I’ve seen, the Rangers have a wonderful leader.” A playful wink punctuated the latter sentence—some of the young lady’s typical energy shining through.

The rain had started to fall, and Bucky flicked a raindrop off the very end of his nose. “I can come for a walk up that way, or find somebody to take you.” He offered. “But not today, until the storm’s passed.”

He chuffed a breath out towards her in amusement, putting his ears back. “Quit the flattery.” He grumbled, looked disgruntled but slightly amused despite himself. He looked up and checked on the position of the storm, then gesture Tamaska to join him. “Let’s cross the stream and shelter on the cliff side, there’s a few little alcoves.” He suggested, turning to lead the way to one of the rockier areas they could cross dry.

Tamaska hadn’t been trying to imply that he needed to go with her or anything. Bucky seemed far too busy and preoccupied with other things to escort her. “Is there anyone else who could take me?” she inquired. “I know you have a lot on your mind right now.”

At his gesture, she padded up beside him. “Sounds good to me,” she agreed, completely okay with the idea of staying dry for the duration of the storm. The lady possessed a thick, fluffy coat, and getting the water out of it in a timely manner was near-impossible.

Bucky ran over a quick list of wolves. “Kaete maybe would.” He tried to keep the doubt from his voice. He had scented her around but gotten the feeling she might be activity avoiding talking to him since her return. He worried she was going to act on her promise from last year - that she wouldn’t mate with a random stranger but only for a year - meaning this year she might be considering exactly that. But if she wanted space, he would give it to her.

“Or maybe… we ought to ask Pierre.” He might be the better choice. “He hasn’t been doing so well since his son Bayley went missing. Yuna can check you out I’m sure, and Pierre can check in with the Tribe wolves about Bayley.”

Bucky didn’t sound overly confident that Kaete would be helpful. Tamaska didn’t know her, and she wasn’t currently feeling overly-optimistic, either, which didn’t help in keeping the doubt at bay.

But Pierre, whoever he was, sounded like the better option. “Gosh,” she breathed, feeling a bit exasperated. “I need to start learning names around here. I don’t know either of the wolves you just mentioned, and it sounds like I maybe should know them.”

She didn’t really want to get off-topic, but promised herself she’d make an effort to socialize more. “What does Pierre look like, or where could I find him? Maybe I could convince him to take me up to the Tribe soon.”

Bucky winced. “Pierre has not been very social since Bayley went missing. And Kaete, I wouldn’t be sure how she’s doing - she just got back from helping another pack and seemed to want some privacy.” He mentioned tactfully, not wanting to go complaining seems to me like she’s purposefully avoiding me.

“I need to check in on Pierre anyway, why don’t I go talk to him then if it goes well, I’ll call you and introduce you.” He offered. “I can tell you a bit about the other pack members if you like too.” Obviously Tamaska wouldn’t feel so social while she had splitting headaches.

She nodded at his words. Bucky certainly commanded more respect around here than she did, so she’d let him handle Pierre. “I’ll leave it up to you, then,” she responded, a smile forming on her lips. Socializing usually brought her out of her sour moods eventually, even if she didn’t realize it.

“I think I’d appreciate that,” she answered. A little run-down wouldn’t hurt, especially if she could learn about who to approach and who not to. By the sound of it, there were a couple of irritable Rangers in the mix that she wasn’t feeling up to irritating further.

They reached the cliffs once it began to rain and Bucky led the way to a small alcove, making sure Tamaska had room to sit. He didn’t care if his back got wet, and he settled down, glad to be out of the wind as the storm broke overhead. He didn’t seem put out - Bucky enjoyed storms, the vibrancy of the lightning and the thrill of thunder.

“No worries, I’ll check in on Pierre and see how he is before suggesting the trip. As for the pack. Nomad got back recently so you’ll be able to meet him - he brought a guest, a girl named Rocco. Nomad’s my councilor or second in command, he’s my size but grey furred. Loves swimming and fishing.” He grinned a little. That was an understatement but he bet Tamaska would figure that out for herself.

“Percy you know already.” He was so proud of that boy for rescuing Tamaska in the first place. He made a note to mention it to Pierre because he was certain Percy would have downplayed his own heroism, especially since Bayley went missing. “He’s with another young wolf Eve on a patrol with Braith, out looking for his brother. Eve was born here and came back to the valley recently after her parents left. Braith is about your age and one of my most promising wolves, I think you’ll like her. There’s Eve’s sister Fox, you’ll know her from her red fur, but she’s really shy so don’t be offended if she seems scared of you. I’d appreciate staying quiet and gentle if you meet her, she’s a bit…” He didn’t have a word for Fox.

“...High strung. There’s my mate Saskia.” An automatic smile curved his muzzle at her name. “If you’re ever in need of good conversation, I highly recommend her.” Even if they hadn’t done that recently, he remembered with a pang. Moving on before he got pouty. Nobody needed a pouting Bucky. He checked on Tamaska to see if she was still following.

She settled down in the alcove, glad that Bucky had sacrificed his dry fur so that she could be comfortable.

At his run-down of all the Rangers, Tamaska followed it to the best of her abilities. She grasped one of the more important points, to be careful with Fox, though she didn’t remember all the names he’d mentioned that tied into the personalities. She supposed it would be easier once she had faces to remember them by, too, so she didn’t stress about it.

At his comment about Saskia, she smiled good-naturedly. “I’ll remember that.”

His silence was met with an eager look from the girl. Was there anyone else, or was he finished?
