//I think you said it was okay, but if any of the offscreen assumptions I made in this post aren’t alright, just lemme know! I hate assuming things. x3

He’d told her he was capable of taking down large game, and today was the day to prove it. It hadn’t been long since he’d first met Kaya, so there was still some unfamiliarity between the two of them that made Dragomir eager to succeed today. Failing to live up to the expectations that he himself had created was out of the question.

The muscular male shook his fur free from the frigid seawater that clung to him and took a few paces inland. There was a dense forest very close to the south shore of the island, one that was visible from his very location, that he and Kaya had agreed to use for their hunt. Dragomir, upon not yet spotting his hunting partner, sent up a call, then continued to make his way toward the forest.

((That’s 100% fine mate! To be honest I’m usually pretty okay with any assumptions that don’t go against my chaarcter’s nature, I tend to be pretty chill in general!))

Large game hunts. Kaya felt her fur spike with pleasant excitement.

Large game hunts with Dragomir.

Alone. With Dragomir. Kaya hadn’t begun to heat yet (thank goodness) but she had begun to question herself about exactly how much of her attraction to the newcomer was strictly due to the onset of the season. And how much because… well, so far, the guy was a catch. Physically.  Mentally.

This wouldn’t do. She would not simply become a slave to her own hormones, and she reminded herself as she trotted up the coast after him, fur still damp from the swim here, that she had a plan. And to stick to it.

“Draogmir.” She greeted him with an upraised tail and a smile that wanted to linger.

Her approach, the way his name sounded coming from her tongue, and that almost-intoxicating scent that he’d been trying to push out of his head since their last meeting, elicited a much warmer response from the male than he’d been anticipating. Or, maybe just warmer than he’d been hoping.

Nonetheless, he couldn’t justify not returning her smile as he glanced over at her. “Kaya.” His light eyes lingered on her for a moment, checking to see if she was just as he remembered. Unfortunately, she wasn’t any less stunning today, even after he’d given his brain an excess amount of rest.

He would just have to push past it. He wouldn’t notice these useless little details while they were chasing after a deer, after all. Dragomir changed his course of vision to focus on the treeline instead. “Any leads on the game?” he inquired, remembering her saying that she’d be sniffing around for any promising signs of prey in the area.

//Dragomir resists his feelings by blatantly basking Kaya’s beauty. What a guy.

The smile fought to remain on her face, but Kaya insisted instead upon her usual impassive look, though her excitement kept her eyes gleaming.

Excitement for the hunt, of course.

“Not in this direction. After the debacle with the Evergreens and Narcisa, I tend to focus my attention on the herds in the plains north.” She had already explained to him that his sister had run to the Evergreens shrieking about Kaya killing her, painting her as the bad guy of this story.

Which of course she was, but she had hoped not to advertise it so soon.

“I have not actually hunted in these pines. They’re certainly sheltered enough for deer herds, I can smell some.” Kaya mused, lowered her nose and inhaling the pine-needle-strewn ground. She could already tell which direction a nearby herd lay in - but this was Dragomir’s test. She was going to let him take the lead on this.

This little hunt might be a guilty pleasure of hers, but it was also about business.

((WHAT a guy :D))

She preferred to go north. It was a small detail, but one he wished he’d known when picking a hunting spot.

She also didn’t seem keen on giving him hints. Dragomir didn’t mind doing the work himself; it would be easier for him than blindly following her word. He lowered his muzzle to the ground and sniffed for scents, catching drift of the aforementioned deer herds. He took a few steps forward, tracing the scent of what seemed to be the most recent trail.

Dragomir lifted his tail, motioning for her to follow him if she wasn’t already. He kept his head low to the ground, but looked ahead, through the pines, as he walked. He was already formulating a plan for this hunt, and given their apparent size and skill, he wanted to have some fun with this.

That confidence of his was appealing, and Kaya found herself following without resentment as the beckon from his tail. He was onto the scents, and she automatically checked up on him, seeing if they were the same she had picked up on - they were.

She slowed just slightly, lingering a touch behind him while she got her bearings and let her nose work out how much longer it would be until they were in range. Then she picked up the pace, but moving with obvious caution now - impossible for a wolf her size to be silent, but the careful way she set her pale paws down in areas muffled by pine needles gave away she was no stranger to this.

Once her head was level with his flank she touched her cheek to his side, a fleeting brush of fur, checking if he had a plan.

Dragomir was also moving forward with evident caution and precision of step. He lowered his nose to the ground between certain intervals of time, to maintain the correct course toward the herd. The herd was in view now, and he slowed his speed considerably to a prowl.

He raised his head as she brushed against him, glancing back at her with excitement in his light eyes. There weren’t any apparently-weak or separated members of the herd, so he motioned with his muzzle toward the center of the group of ungulates. She’d surely understand that he intended to give chase and separate the herd.

He was interested to see how a wolf such as herself fared in this situation. Separating individuals from a herd could be tricky, but when prey animals accrued enough panic, it was inevitable.

That look on his face, though. Kaya couldn’t resist letting a grin curl over her muzzle in response, the way his eyes danced in opposition to the rigid control he had over his body.

When he motioned, intending to give chase and take an opportunity it seemed, her head lifted and then her chin dipped rapidly, a definitive nod. He did have a plan, though he didn’t bother with elaborate details. She would see weather relatively winging it as a strategy paid off soon enough.

She tensed her body, weight shifting back towards her hindlegs, in ready preparation to spring into action. Her muscles ripped under her coat - this valley had treated her well. She might have been past her prime, but if you asked her it wasn’t far past. Kaya Silvano had never been a wolf who shied from action.

Dragomir wouldn’t bother planning any further than scattering the herd. He couldn’t predict which individuals would break from the group, or whether there were any less-capable deer that would lag behind. Before instructing Kaya further, he’d need to get some action.

He readied himself for the chase, watching the herd with vigilant, predatory eyes, bunching the muscles in his powerful hind legs. A breath, to fill his lungs with air. He cast a final glance toward Kaya, checking to ensure that she was prepared.

Then, it was time to go. Dragomir ripped forward, splaying pine needles and dirt out from beneath his large hind paws as he went, surging toward the herd. The deer, instantly alerted of imminent danger, set off in the opposite direction.

She would be lying if she didn’t let him spring forward first - not just to see how he did in the lead position of a hunt, just simply to enjoy the view of his muscular figure hurtling towards the herd.

She snapped forwards herself with a mighty shove form her hindlegs, front paws swinging forward, catching and setting the rhythm of the run, and the pair of them burst towards the deer herd who scattered, fleeing off to the west.

Kaya’s eyes narrowed, seeking some targets. The closest deer to them was a big buck in the rear - a prize, but also harder to bring down and more difficult to get back to the island. After that were three does, all healthy from what she could see, but one younger than the two mature ones.

But Kaya held back instead of making a move towards any of the deer as they pursued. This was Dragomir’s show. And she was just along for the ride.

Perhaps she would think he was being cocky. Perhaps he was being cocky. He was a Blanc, after all—strong, powerful, and capable. But, when the first deer to separate from the herd was the large buck, having veered slightly to the right, Dragomir wedged himself between it and the rest of its herd, motioning for Kaya to flank it on the right.

He pursued the fleeing ungulate, watching for flying hooves and antlers, barking and snapping and snarling all the while to frighten it into subordination, to go where he wanted it to go. This part of the hunt would leave him breathless, and he’d have to slow his pace once the job was completed, but there would be significantly-less pressure on the pair of hunters once the buck had been separated from its herd.

It was just a matter of hanging in there, letting the animal’s dumb fear lead it on a path to its own demise.

Her lips curved, amused at following the lead of another - but this was what she had wanted, and Kaya fell in willingly, well used to large game hunts.

She worked up to the right side of the fleeing buck - ambitious boy -  and aided in the snaps, cold and calculated, because she and Dragomir were the predators here, and superior stock at that. She was always of a certain cocky mindset when it came to hunting - if you believed you were setting out to fail you would. If you could already taste the blood, you would.

Surviving took a certain boldness; to not cower and merely exist (she thought of the words of the ‘Child of Darkness’) but to embrace life, to take risks and enjoy the payout.

Kaya took a nip at a leg as they drew close. Enough to draw blood, barely enough to slow the buck down. Yet.

Kaya had already gotten into position and down to business. Dragomir liked that; she carried her own weight very well in a hunt. Her nips were pushing the buck toward him, ever-so-slightly, so he lunged forward to graze the animal with nips of his own. To keep it in line, and keep any potential kicks well-within eyesight, so he had time to prepare.

The buck, perhaps starting to sacrifice a majority of its focus for fear, stumbled through a dip in the ground. Dragomir took the chance to land a more substantial bite to its hindquarters, ripping off a lump of hide. With adrenaline pulsing through his veins, and the first taste of meat taken, the hulking male was feeling giddy. As giddy as Dragomir could feel during a hunt, anyhow. He fell behind the buck once more as it picked up more speed, waving the patch of fur in his mouth and eyeing Kaya triumphantly.

It would only be a second-long exchange, though. Couldn’t risk getting distracted during a hunt.

Like Dragomir, Kaya knew the dangers of distraction. But oh, it was oh so tempting to grin back at him, and she let it flicker for a moment, enjoying the fleeting glimpse she had of his bold look already hinting at victory.

She could work with this wolf. And despite her focus she was already laying steadfast plans in order to continue to do so.

Dragomir had wasted no time. A few minor bites, and one less so. They were setting themselves up well today. Kaya maintained her speed and for now launched no further attacks, knowing that the deer would run, loose blood, and weaken with time as they pursued it.

Always thinking strategically, Kaya moved out to the side subtly, and began pushing the deer in a very broad semi-circle. A little while longer in the chase and they would swing back towards the northern section of the pines, and from there they would have far less distance to get cuts back to Pearl Island.

Dragomir spat the fur out once a reaction had been received. He’d tasted blood once, and now, he was lusting for more. As the deer shifted direction, very subtly, he figured that Kaya was trying out an idea of her own, and aided her in herding the deer that direction.

He continued to nick and nip at the buck’s flanch, hindquarters, shoulder—whatever he could reach. The more flesh he tore from it, the easier it would fall when the time came.

Dragomir was perhaps, even bolder in the hunt than Kaya herself tended to be. Maybe he was always such; maybe he was throwing out all the stops to impress her (Would she admit if it was working?). She watched him chip away, a nip here and a bite there - able to watch both he and their prey now she wasn’t actively launching attacks on it. She could already feel the change. The frantic burst fueled by desired to live was fading, bleeding out the buck’s hocks. His speed was flagging, not a great deal, but perceptible.

But Dragomir was the opposite. She could see him - the desire to close his jaws and wrench flesh from the bone, the desire to prove his strength. Her own fur spiked up in a line from her neck to the base of her tail.

The chase continued, and she paced herself well, watching for the opportunity when Dragomir would strike.
