There was an odd sort of contentment for Ash in coming to the mountains. His step even looked lighter, and he glowered less, though that could also have been due to having all his siblings back together - and Aunt Star too. He might have not been the talkative type and regarded many wolves with suspicion, but even Ash at heart enjoyed company. Not that he’d admit that.

They’d traveled relatively slowly, Ash enjoying the challenge of hunting in new places. Well not totally new - this wasn’t his first trip here, though this trip was very different to the time with Pierre, Bayley and Percy.

It was a cold, clear winter’s morning as he trekked the way up the mountainside to the basin’s entrance, and he really felt, for once - optimistic. This was their fresh start. Things would be different in the mountains. Ash glanced back at his family once he reached the northernmost borders, then lifted his muzzle to howl.

They were here.

((Just gonna be vague about who is here or lagging behind until everyone posts and decides for themselves, I know there was talk about Star following later, but then all the kids stayed a day extra anyway so - assuming the siblings and Star are here BUT anyone roll in and work it how they want, no stress.

Loose posting order is fine))

She’d been able to wrap things up quickly and the trio had been delayed by feeding Rowan, so she’d been able to accompany them in the end. She chose not to make her relief excessively apparent, but she was glad she wouldn’t have to be separated from the children for too long. Ash had really been taking the lead with most things, and she found that comforting. She was proud of the quieter, more reserved brother’s ability and seeming willingness to step up when the time came. She tried not to fuss over Rowan too much during the trip, but she’d been shooting him side-eyed glances of worry throughout the journey to the mountains, ever on the cusp of murmuring encouragement or asking if he needed anything while they walked. He was the least physically capable pup, for whatever reason, and too skinny. She was allowed to fuss a little, ok? She’d also been sure not to let Saya fall into the invisible middle child spectrum, regardless of birth order, but had also been cautious of certain topics of conversation, remembering the girl’s volatility when it came to certain things like parents and Bucky. Plus annoying Saya would easily spark Tahti into aggression. She was still in heat, unfortunately.
It wouldn’t end for a few more days, she knew. She couldn’t wait for it to be over. The need to roll around in the snow seeking relief from the restless warmth beneath her skin was not foreign but it was annoying and put her on edge. She’d managed herself around Saya just fine so far, though.

But the ansty feeling made her even more on edge and nervous-More snappy than anything, really-about the whole new pack thing. She’d like to, really like to, push to the front and lay down the law, tell these Covenant wolves just exactly what she’d do to them if they irked her or injured her children but she knew that wouldn’t help the need burning it’s way through her veins nor would it be a good start, or really any start. She wished they could have pushed this off longer, because the idea of having to use words right now was not appealing.
But she was the resident adult in this little group. She had to act like it.
But letting the kids take the lead would be good for them, too. So she’d let them do the heavy lifting unless she really had to speak up.

So long as nobody made any snarky or flirtatious comments about her current condition, everything would be fine.

Recent adventures away from Dentree had given Rowan something resembling a bit of stamina, but boy, was he unprepared for the trek into the mountains. Walking at an upward slope made his back ache, and breathing the thin, chilled air of the cliffs had him panting openly. It was almost enough to set his heart trembling like it often did, hardly different than a fish flopping about on land—except it was in his chest and not nearly as amusing.

But he didn’t dare complain, didn’t dare fuss. Acceding to Aunt Star’s apparent worry would have been easy, and really, it appealed to the part of him that wished he were a baby, and coddled still, and part of a whole family. But he couldn’t do that.

He was older, wiser now. Things couldn’t go back to how they used to be. This journey was proof of that.

So Ro pressed after Ash eagerly, wishing he had his brother’s sure-footedness and healthy heart, because he was almost certain the marked boy wasn’t feeling nearly as light-headed as he was. He had to be strong, if not for himself, then Saya. Like it or not, there would be no denying that Rowan cared deeply for what she thought about him.

Fortunately, as they arrived at the northern borders, Rowan could allow his show of confidence to dissipate. He sunk into a sit, breathing heavily still, relishing the chance to rest his sore limbs. He tried to keep his nose from wrinkling at the pungent territory markers.

He couldn’t be rude now. He—all of them—were depending on the wolves who lived just beyond. Making a decent first impression would be best.

Anna had taken to answering at the borders when calls came. She was half-expecting to be seeing Eve and the other two from the search party that had come by, so when she heard a howl, she set out for the entrance to the basin at a lazy trot, her ears swiveling forward and tail held up.

The faces she saw up ahead were mostly unfamiliar.. all but one. The boy from the beach. What was with the beach wolves and their fascination with her mountains, anyway?

Despite her confusion (she had thought, after Ash’s prolonged absence, that she would not see the boy again), she put on a reasonably welcoming face and stopped several yards back, standing poised and examining the travelers before her. Somewhere among them a particular scent reminded her of the way her mother had been smelling, lately, but rather than a comforting scent, it was somewhat off-putting, and she had to make a conscious decision not to wrinkle her nose with distaste.

“Hello, Ash,” she said calmly, focusing on the boy she knew before looking to the others and dipping her head slightly in greeting. “My name is Anna,” she said to them, pausing for a moment. If Ash had brought these wolves, they must be alright. So, with some hesitation, she added, “Welcome to the basin.”

Relic was already up and about, as per usual, when he heard the call shuffle through the trees. It wasn’t familiar and part of him already expected it to be from an Empire pup.

Weaving his way through trunks, he was pleasantly surprised to see the silhouette of his niece come into view. Shortly after, four more warm bodies materialized once he was on the other side of the treeline completely - none of them he recognized.

He heard murmurs from Anna, including her own introduction, but didn’t take his place next to her until after she’d spoken.

With a natural smile pinning the corners of his lips up, he gave a nod to the strangers at their borders. “Hello. My name is Relic. Who might you be?” An ear flicked idly at the soft background noises as his marbled gaze bounced from one wolf to the next, smile growing placidly.

There was a lot of new things to see. Saya hasn’t been this excited to explore and discover since she was little. Just like old times when she was discovering the world. Obviously it would slow her down but she never had any difficulty catching up with all the energy she had. “This place is so pretty.” She commented as caught up to the others. The new scene and air did made her think very positively, therefore seeing everything around her as beautiful as they truly were.

Introductions began, Saya joined in cheerfully. “Hello! I’m Saya, nice to meet you!” She walk in to be among her brothers, first giving her full attention to the new wolves.

With Aunt Star trailing behind them, giving a safe bubble of protection Ash wouldn’t have admired to valuing when the pack began to respond. Rowan sat down, panting, and Ash remembered again that Ro just wasn’t as tough or fit as he himself was. Maybe he ought to try and get his brother to join him on his runs around the- no, not the oaks anymore. But he’d soon find a new place to run, and his paws itched for it already.

Anna arrived, with a male adult he hadn’t met last time. Ash actually summoned an almost-smile for the girl, and gruffly spoke her name in greeting. “Anna.”

He then focused the same ghost-smile on his sister who proclaimed the mountainside was pretty. She hadn’t seen anything yet - just wait til they passed through the crevasse and she saw the lake. “Wait til you see inside.” He told her. She was going to flip out. Hopefully she wouldn’t embarrass him in front of new wolves.

His gaze switched to the new male and he cleared his throat uncomfortably, but his head bowed in respectful greeting automatically, responding to the authority he knew the male carried here. This then, was the pack leader Anna had told him about. “Uh, hi.” He looked up, meeting the adult’s eye cautiously. “I’m Ash. My siblings and my aunt are here to ask about joining.” He didn’t bother pointing out which were his siblings and which his aunt. Star stood out like a dark began with the three white pups, even with his own dark markings.

The first wolf to answer was a little green-eyed chocolate-and-cream female, around the kids’ age too. That was good, she had been hoping there would be other children here for the trio to socialize with. That sort of thing was important. They couldn’t spend all their time with each other or training. The girl-Anna-seemed to know Ash, too, and greeted him with what she thought was a bit of friendliness. Ash must have been able to make a good impression last time he was here, which was promising, considering how little the boy talked. The dark female offered the pup a gratuitous dip of her head at the welcome, her tail waving once when a male arrived.

Anna and Relic. Both were a little reserved but seemed nice enough. And she remembered that Relic was the local Alpha from her conversation with Bucky. She nearly introduced herself, but then realized she wasn’t sure what to say. Would she be Star to these wolves, or Tahti? Really, she didn’t mind too much, though she admittedly did love to hear her birth name roll off of the tongues of others. Star was one of many alternative names given to her while she’d been mute, and the kids still called her that.
She supposed that could be their ‘thing’, then. Most wolves knew her real name at this point anyway. “Nice to meet you both. I am Tahti.” Another soft wave of the tip of her tail, shooting a questioning glance at Rowan to ask him if he was alright. He was panting rather heavily and she figured he just needed a rest but she wasn’t sure.

The first wolf to appear was young, like him and his siblings, but she looked wholly different. Rowan studied the various markings around her eyes and muzzle, finding them just as striking as Ash’s—if not more so for their novelty.

She’d apparently met Ash before, and she greeted him before welcoming them all to the basin. Rowan smiled around his lolling tongue.

The next to arrive was a male, older than him. Relic, he was called, and he carried with him the collective scent of the pack which had Ro straightening in attention. Like Saya, he found a surprising beauty in their surroundings, in these wolves which greeted them.

Ash told them to wait until they saw inside the basin. Nearly forgetting his thudding heart, Rowan thumped his tail upon the ground in eagerness. But, first, introductions.

He turned his ears forward, straining to hear over the rush of blood inside them. Anna, Relic, Ash, Saya… and Tahti? Rowan cast a discreet look at his aunt through the corner of one eye, wondering if it was some sort of nickname she wanted these wolves to use for her. It didn’t call back to Star, not at all, but whatever. He wouldn’t fret.

It was his turn, and he dragged his tongue back into his mouth, desperate not to appear too messy. “I’m Rowan, but you can”—a breath—“call me Ro if you want.”

All that was left to do was wait for an answer.

Relic showed up, and Anna’s tail waved, happy to see him here. Especially considering all of the introductions, and what Ash said next about them all looking to join. This was of particular interest. She looked over at Relic- yes, over, not up, for she found that she was now only a few inches shorter than the Lumen. She privately thought she could probably really kick his ass now if she wanted to. Lucky for him, she didn’t. The thought brought a little smile to her face and she used it to her advantage, turning it on the newcomers.

Ash she knew of course, but here was Saya, pretty and pristine of color in a way that Anna had never seen, Tahti, and interesting name and the oldest of the bunch, and Rowan, who seemed.. unwell. She settled on him the longest. He seemed quite friendly, even offering up a nickname.

Nicknames were almost unheard of- somewhere in the back of her mind she noted that Damien went by Dama, but everyone else in the basin seemed to go by their full names, didn’t they? Ro. Short, to the point. She liked it- though she privately thought that Rowan was much grander.

Anna liked the kind introductions, she liked that they had followed the rules and howled at the borders, not skulking about like the Hellmaw lot, and she liked most of all that Saya and Ash had spoken of the beauty of the territory. She was a bit house-proud, you see.

She remained silent this time, but her brows rose to look at Relic, body still with anticipation. Would he let them in? She found herself hopeful.

Relic matched the smile and small tail wag his niece offered him before turning his attention pleasantly back to the strangers. There were quite a few of them with another one appearing a little later than the rest. Saya.

He looked to the boy with the interesting marking - introducing himself as Ash - and thought back to Stephan telling him a little of the pup. It seems he was right in that the Ranger pup was going to bring back a few family members.

He listened as Ash gave more insight to their presence in the mountains, marbled gaze looking to the only adult in the bunch - Tahti - before scrolling over to the last of the pups - Rowan. “It’s a pleasure to meet you all. It must have been a hardy trek from the coast,” he mused with a smile, glad to see they’ve all made it in one piece.

Relic couldn’t help but notice the troubled way Rowan was breathing, however. Immediately, he was reminded of Albus and his smile faltered. “Are you all right?” Brows knitting somewhat together in worry. Unless one was born in the mountains or traveled through them regularly, it was no easy task to accomplish. The oxygen was thinner where they were and it took a while for a pair of lungs to acclimate to.

“If you like, I can take you to our lake just inside. I like to think the moisture helps with breathing better than out here.” His eyes glanced about their surroundings before resting encouragingly on the troubled pup.

Ooo Saya couldn’t wait to see what could possibly be inside. This was only the beginning and she was already quite excited. That didn’t mean she wasn’t paying attention to what was around her. Star called herself Tahti, Saya threw a quick ‘what?’ expression towards her. Wasn’t Star her real name? She wanted to ask why not the usual name they grew up with. But Saya didn’t want to make a scene just yet.

Rowan was also getting attention. For some reason everything was harder for him, it always been like that. It’s clear that there was a problem but he has always been trying very hard to overcome it. That was on thing to admire him for. At least now the hard part was over, Rowan deserved a rest.

She kept her positive aura up, she didn’t feel like she needed to say anything right now. She was just an excited child wiggling and waiting to be unleashed into the playground.

Ash wasn’t sure about Relic yet, observing the male and comparing his open, friendly air to Stephen’s far more stoic nature. But both males had their aura of power about them. He decided to let one of his siblings or Aunt Star answer about the journey here - small talk wasn’t exactly Ash’s thing, and it hadn’t even been so far, even as far as the bay he’d reached in the north. When Relic offered to take them to the lake, Ash cleared his throat and nodded gruffly. “Thanks.” He responded, his tail stirring faintly.

So far so good. He eyed Anna, and the way she looked expectantly towards Relic. An invitation to come to the lake was not an invitation to join, after all - was he just the type who liked to talk heaps before he cut to the chase, like so many grownups?

Several pairs of eyes were on him. Not one to succumb to self-consciousness, Rowan returned the glances of his peers—only realizing after Relic asked about his health why he’d been so fiercely regarded.

It wasn’t often he was asked such things, belonging to the close circle that was his family. They’d come to expect these little episodes of his. But to strangers… maybe it was unusual, he considered.

“Me? I’m—I’m okay!” His tongue rolled out of his mouth again, but he offered a smile around it. “Sometimes, my heart—” Here, he lifted a wrist to his chest to demonstrate and breathed deeply. “Just feels a lil funny. But—it’s okay.”

No one had ever provided a clinical explanation, but he’d hunted enough, ripped up enough bodies of small prey to know what a heart was and where his own lay behind his ribs. He didn’t think his weak one a source of embarrassment.

His eyes roved to Saya and Ash, then Anna, until finally they came to rest on Relic again. His ears turned back in subdued hope. “I think… we’d all really like to see the lake, though! If it’s okay!”

Anna listened to Relic speak to the travelers silently, her eyes lighting on the skinny boy again when Relic spoke to him about easier breathing. She tried not to let her confusion show on her face- the mountains had the best air for breathing, in her opinion, but by the lake was plenty good too, it seemed.

Her tail wagged slightly at the excitement that Saya and Rowan in particular seemed to be exhibiting, and once Relic had offered to let them in, she felt plenty comfortable leading the way. Beaming a sweet smile at them all, she turned and trotted a few steps. “Come, I’ll show you,” she huffed, glancing at Relic brightly and then bounding off into the crack of the rock that would lead them through to the trees, and then to the lake beyond.

Ash studied Rowan most intently for a minute, thinking how different he and Ro were as brothers. Physically as well as in their natures. It had never mattered to Ash.

“Me too.” He nodded gruffly, his gaze going to Anna. He would like to see the lake, and he slouched over towards the younger girl, ready to follow her. But he glanced back as he did - first at his siblings, seeing if they were coming along, then at Aunt Star to be sure she wasn’t vanishing like every grownup, and finally at Relic, carefully checking for a sign of approval.
