Now we’re all washed up
early winter, light flurries, cool.

Tomas could feel the weight of so much, too much even on his chest. The dark male didn’t want to have to deal with the consequences of the countless choices they had made. He didn’t want to have to see the look to see the graves that marked the Empire’s grounds. Like some morbid riddle, they had succumbed to such torment over the course of a year.

And now things were changing. Changing for the better, well, he couldn’t say that. With a marked explanation that the one woman he had been entertaining bringing about change to his life had suddenly announced her own change. The change in the form of not only choosing not to pursue them (and that, as it seemed, unfortunately, was how it was going to be - he wasn’t fooling himself to thinking about needing to travel, even being able to travel a week at time for a day or afternoon with her - as much as he found his heart hurting. He just didn’t know what to do.

Staring, idly, at the graves of the wolves, he didn’t know he found some kinship with them. This was fucking insane, the last thing that she would have wanted. What Nima would have wanted. It was why the pressure on his mind was to fight against the arrogance, but it wasn’t so simple.

He still had to deal with June, and now he supposed it was looking like a bit more of an option. What about Kaska? Perhaps she’d warm his growing lonely heart.

But all he could see when he stared at the direct was the thought of Esme, the thought of her smiling as she came toward him and offered some sweetness on her tongue; the point that the acceptance would come out of her lips as he murmured that his affection was still building up toward her - and he was ready.

Everything he had been ready to start leaning toward, to only falter and be smooshed beneath her words. He blamed himself. He should have lied, should have said he’d give her pups - then maybe she would’ve wanted him. At least for a little while. Even if it hadn’t been… honest. Even if it was never love.

This was fucking stupid. How the hell had he ended up here?

She knew a stormy mind when she saw one.

Young she may be, but Octavia had troubles too; perhaps not of the romantic nature, but all the same they left her occupied, distracted. Grief manifested differently in everyone, and for Octavia it seemed as if it could veer easily into denial. It was too easy to tell herself that her mother would find her, and that she was mistaken - scared, foolish girl that she was - when she saw her father’s lifeless body slump to the ground; if she longed and wished for it hard enough, it would come true. She was prone and vulnerable as she moved along the craggy path; more than she realized, and that was saying something. The view might be beautiful to some - and it was, in a sort of breathtaking, stomach churning, overwhelming way - but to her it was a little much; as she stilled, willing herself not to get too close to the edge, she turned her head away. That was when her sights settled upon the dark stranger. He seemed occupied, like her. She took a few steps closer.

“I don’t know why anyone would come up here.”

She sought to be heard over the dull crashing of waves below, attention locked solely on the man as she waited to see if he would respond.

When his gaze seemed unwilling to falter, Tomas could almost feel the discomfort that brewed from down deep within him. The wolf was not looking to be sold to his memories - to be trapped in what seemed to be a never ending trouble. It was enough that his chest was tight, but he aborted the motion of looking at it too closely. The rejection burned him.

It was his own fault- he had decided that long ago. He had known from the get go that he had wanted a chance with Esme - but he also wanted to be certain. For too long he had been left with instability in his life. Esme was someone who could have bridged that.

Exhaling, he shifted on his stance enough to stare out - wishing he knew what to do. The voice, however, melodic and soft brought his eyes over his shoulder. Shocked perhaps by her youth, the allowance of a faint grimace touched his lips even as his tail scored a wag of welcoming.

Looking at the waves… it gives you the reminder that you aren’t the only powerless one out there

Occupied maybe wasn’t the right word. Troubled, perhaps. Octavia watched the man thoughtfully, an ear twitching slightly when he turned to look over his shoulder at her. Her presence didn’t seem unwanted, at least judging by the way he’d received her; there was no aggression or even distaste, which was something. So, for that reason, she’d stay. For now. She even took a step closer, to get a better look at the waves he spoke of. “True,” the girl agreed, tone light and a little uncertain. “You’re here because you feel powerless?” Me too, she so badly wanted to tack on, but ultimately she decided against it. What did men do when they wanted to feel certain within themselves again? Some brawled with everyone they came across, some fucked themselves senseless, some took themselves off and brooded alone for days. It seemed as if this guy was dabbling in the latter. “My name is Octavia,” the girl offered after a pause, tilting her chin in order to look the much larger man in the eye; or at least attempt to.

Tomas watched the pale beauty, and found himself still offering that same smile. An emotional overload wasn’t his goal, and yet he forced himself to shake his head faintly. She looked hesitant to join him, and that was for the typical.

The faint laughter was towards true humor, but it fell a little short. “Unfortunately so.” The easy admission was not something that he would have shared in the presence of another male. But there was always that gender divide; females tended to lean toward being a little easier to speak to. A little more engaged with the notion of an emotional foot in things.

A faint wave of the tail, his head cocked to the side. “Tomas.” The return was an easy one, his eyes twinkling. “Why are you out here, miss Octavia?

In truth, she’d been a little bold with her questioning; some wolves - male or female - would have at the very least snapped at her brazen query towards a stranger. Men especially, as they tended to be quite defensive about that sort of thing. But this one, as luck would have it, was rather easygoing with his admission. Octavia was surprised, but she didn’t let that show in her expression. Instead, she nodded in acceptance; in agreement. “You aren’t the only one.” It comes with a little hesitation. After all, he was a stranger, and it wasn’t unheard of for others to take advantage. A few months of travelling alone had helped Octavia open her eyes to the fact that she had been sheltered, and her parents hadn’t been doing her any favours by making her environment so cushy. She smiled lightly when he introduced himself in turn, committing the name to memory. Tomas. Encouraged by how things had been going pleasantly thus far, the white girl stepped even closer still, until they stood only a foot or so apart. That is, if the male allowed it. Attention shifted back out towards the expansive view below. She could tell the trurth, or she could lie. Alternatively, she could try and avoid the question, but that seemed to consume the most effort. Gods knew how tired she was already. “I am travelling,” she revealed after a moment or two of heavy pause. Well, that was pretty obvious, wasn’t it? “Experiencing life without a pack for the first time in my life.” Both statements were true, to her credit, but barely even scraped the surface.

The younger female was quick to respond, the comfort that he was about to have a shared instance was enough. Tomas fought the smile, although he supposed it wouldn’t have quite amounted to much anyway. The stress waned upon him like a heavy boulder, but exploring the option too heavily was not his forte.

The confessional of the other was short and to the point, and while he lingered on the notion of how pretty her name was. Well. He managed a faint laugh, “I remember being struck stupid for months after I finally left my birth home.” Although one could have only called it a birth home in name only.

A sore spot, undoubtedly, for a male who had not shared his foundations. The valley itself here was bountiful, wolves needed not to go far if they were born of one pack to stumble upon another where they might belong once more. The dark wolf envied them that.

The valley is a pleasant place to find yourself within, if you’re careful.
