Despite the downpour, it had not taken long to travel from the beach to the cache near the little spring on the island. His brother’s final gift grasped in his jaws, Crixus trotted dutifully to a boulder of about chest-height and placed the beaver upon it, somewhat rigid and cold, then sat upon the slightly raised surface himself. He settled himself, business-like in his ministrations. There was little to be done about the rain as it poured down, thunder booming overhead, but it made for a dramatic picture, at least.

The big male tilted his muzzle to the sky and loosed a long, deep howl of summoning for the remainder of his family. He had bad news for them, but it seemed kinder to call them to this spot than to bring them right into the heart of it without an explanation first. When his call ended, his gaze flicked idly to Kaya, in case she had any last words to add before they faced his cousins together.

Kaya tailed Crixus with her muzzle thoughtfully creased, careful however to maintain a proper distance between them. Heat was no time to be making mistakes, and things between her and Dragomir having taken such an expected turn, well…

She settled somewhat off his left side when he did sit. He sought her gaze and she met it with her trademark level-headedness, offering a nod of encouragement to her future leader. This would not be easy news to break, however there were ways in which things could be given a beneficial lean.

There was always an angle. You just had to find the right one.

Larisa disliked this raining, cold weather. It worsened her mood, which was already poor, and only made her feel disgusting and soggy as she ambled around the island, still in heat. It certainly hadn’t been any positive to her to smell Kaya in heat either. The bigger woman seemed to linger around both Crixus and Dragomir.

The purely white woman had settled on a plan of keeping all but her most mundane thoughts to herself these days. Everyone here was a disappointment, and she was still deciding what the best course of action might be for her - particularly if she was going to be having pups in the spring. Maybe Narcisa had been right, she should have simply disappeared with her sister.

No matter her feelings, she couldn’t ignore Crixus’ summons, even if she smelled Kaya the closer she got. Larisa hated it all, but before she came within sight of the pair her tail picked up into a pleasant wag and she stretched her lips into a smile.

Pushing through the bit of undergrowth she gave Kaya a quick nod but moved towards Crixus. “Dear,” she said sweetly, feeling that this was a strange meeting, but not being about to say as much. She didn’t like that Crixus was perched on a boulder above her and Larisa couldn’t so easily greet him with a nuzzle, but she figured she’d coax him down eventually.

Dragomir had been seeking shelter from the rain within a den he’d begun digging out for himself and Kaya. As winter dragged on, it would no doubt get colder, and this late-season thunderstorm was only the beginning of the inclement weather to come. He’d found quite the spot: around the creek, there was an outcropping of large boulders, two of which came together to form a crevice large enough for him to fit through. He’d begun the process of digging the dirt out, to make it roomier for the pair of them, and was taking a minute’s rest when Crixus called.

He came dutifully to the sound, of course, curious as to what had transpired. When he arrived on the scene, he dipped his head to the three wolves who’d gathered before him, his gaze lingering on Kaya.

Dragomir got comfortable, figuring they would need to wait for Abaddon before officially beginning the meeting. He sat down near Larisa, hoping she didn’t harbor any hard feelings from their previous conversation.

Larisa arrived with a short greeting- he didn’t smile at her, but bobbed his head gently. It was only the work of a moment when Dragomir, too, arrived, and he extended the same to him, looking betwen the both of them. “My dear cousins,” he began, and stepped down from his boulder perch, his ears slightly back and muzzle pointed downward. “I am afraid I have called you here with terrible news.”

He paused for a moment, taking a breath and castin his eyes from their faces, off toward the beach. “Today we have lost one of our own. Abaddon was caught in the storm as he was returning home from a hunt. The bay has claimed a good wolf.” He supposed he would give them all the truth of it he knew- had he more time, he might have been able to twist the story in some way, but as it was, it was easiest to lay it all out on the table, so to speak.

“Kaya and I were able to recover his body and bring it out of the rain, should you like to pay your respects.” He managed a rather grave expression, and indeed he felt it as he explained everything to them.

There, both Lairsa and Dragomir arrived. The former had only a nod for her, though Kaya had not expected any warm reception. She felt Dragomir’s eyes on her, and although it was not the time to smirk knowing at him given the circumstances, she returned the gaze in a way she hoped would communicate they could speak in more detail later.

She placed a paw up by the beaver. “Abaddon died putting this pack foremost, bringing this catch back to our cache.” She elaborated, voice serious, filled with the gravity of the situation. “He believed in the values of our future pack, believed they were worth supporting. I know, given you three were family to him, this will be difficult a time. But take what solace you can from that knowledge, and in this - that we will found our pack knowing
Abaddon was going to stand at our sides.”

Crixus seemed to give her the barest of nods, not a welcoming greeting. Dragomir had arrived, quietly, and Larisa gave him a nod as well when he settled near her. Larisa only had a moment to ponder why he might seem so focused on Kaya, and she on him, but then Crixus was talking and it rightly distracted her.

Her expression shifted to one of shock. It felt an appropriate response, but she wasn’t certain that she could have made it anything else even if she had wanted to. Abaddon was dead, drowned. And yet…Larisa’s mind flashed quickly to many other things.

Crixus and Kaya had so conveniently found his body - together. They had saved it from the water, but had not managed to save him from death. Abaddon, her last hope at a family member with some sense, some idea of what their family truly ought to be. Larisa felt the shock and pain, fury too, and a sudden and terrible unease. Abaddon had been strong, big, young, capable. But no match for the pair of white furred lunatics before her obviously.

Her mind screamed at her that they’d killed him. They’d done this. Somehow, they’d known something, decided something. They’d drowned Abaddon and then come to find Larisa to tell her this story. Kaya wasted no time twisting this into a sermon about dedication to the pack as she offered her hollow condolences.

Larisa took a step forward towards her mate, reaching out for him in comfort. “I’m so sorry darling,” she said softly, wishing to press herself in close. She would lie, and scheme, and survive. She would do what it took to make them all think she agreed with them and she would not be the next corpse they ‘found’ somewhere on this island.

His idle thoughts of Abaddon turned to ones filled with much more grief. Dragomir had always thought him haughty, less focused on true merit than pre-conceived notions of what it meant to be a good character, though he certainly couldn’t say he disliked him. Indeed, he’d liked Abaddon, and would mourn his recent loss of a family member. A dutiful one, at that, who’d died trying to support his family.

He rotated his ears back upon noticing how solemn Crixus seemed. Dragomir wondered how he was taking this all, if he was harboring worse feelings on the inside that he wouldn’t allow his packmates to see. The big male rose to his feet and slowly paced closer to the rock, to eye his cousin respectfully and wait to offer his condolences until his sister was finished comforting him.

Crixus accepted Larisa’s contact, leaning his head into her neck for a moment. It was clear enough that this had been quite a shock to the rest of the family. He waited for Kaya to finish her speech highlighting Abaddon’s sense of duty. Probably most of them realized that he had been a little more loose than most in those ideals, but it was true that he had been in the process of bringing something back for the cache.

He gave a grave nod when she finished, then looked to Dragomir, who, too, seemed solemn. He extended a paw to place it on him, trying to ignore the way that his cousin’s and Kaya’s scents intermingled. There was a bit much heat smell going on with the two females so near, a distraction he didn’t need in this moment.

“Come along, if you wish to help bury him,” he said after a while, turning to lead the way back to where the body lie. Part of him just wanted to cast it back out to sea, but he supposed it would distress Larisa to see the gulls work away at it by turns, and if it were to wash back up on shore it would be more of a mess than it was worth.

Kaya’s gaze took in Larisa and Dragomir’s reactions. This was not the time for idly flirting with the latter, and she and her new mate would have to find a way to tell Larisa before she deduced herself what was going on.

Preoccupied with thoughts of the future, she was able to move on quite nicely from Abaddon’s death. She rose and moved when Crixus did, standing off from his left flank with a wider bubble of space than usual. They’d all figure out why.

The others were quiet, so was Larisa. She didn’t have anything to say about this. Her mind was a whir at the perceived treachery all around her. This was not a safe home. Whatever thoughts went through Crixus’ mind these days, they weren’t about how he could help his family.

Crixus had leaned against her, but the moment felt short and sooner than she would have liked he was turning away, speaking of burying Abaddon. While she had not spoken with him since her return, she felt like Abaddon might have been a true hope here still, might have been someone on her side, willing to help her. Now he had been taken away, forever. The idea of putting him in a damp hole in the ground seemed vastly inappropriate for a true member of their family.

Still, she couldn’t say anything. Larisa followed after her cousin quietly.

As Crixus touched him solemnly with his paw, Dragomir dipped his head in respect. “He will be missed, Crixus.”

He, of course, would participate in the burial for Abaddon. His cousin deserved the respect of a proper burial. The dark male followed after the rest of his family, trying to follow more closely to his sister than Kaya. Now was certainly not the occasion to be flirting with her, even if her scent was drawing him in. He was sure she’d understand.

// hope its okay with y’all if I do a little time skip and make some assumptions- 100% happy to change anything so let me know if it doesn’t work for y’all!

Crixus had thanked Dragomir for his condolences and agreed that Abaddon would, indeed, be missed, all the while privately harboring the thoughts that he hadn’t missed him all that much in the season he had been gone, so it was unlikely to be all that bad now. At least now, he knew where Abaddon was. He wasn’t out somewhere doing unknown things. He would be safely in the ground. Pity, pity.

By the time they arrived at the overhang of jagged rock that concealed the body, the worst of the storm had passed into a light rain- some sense of relief, at least. He paused in the firm, damp sand and tilted his head toward the shallow shelter. “Larisa, love, perhaps you would choose a spot for him?” he suggested, trying to make her feel needed.

Kaya stood respectfully back from the shallow shelter. She nodded to the others to go ahead. “While I am here for support of course, this is a family matter.” She intoned, not intending to trespass on the grief of the others.  It was easy, for her, of course. She had no real care about Abaddon’s death, except in how to turn it best to the pack’s advantage.

Larisa was consoled some tiny amount that Dragomir seemed at least a little bit touched by this all. The small group set off after Crixus and Larisa followed in silence until they had come to the place where Abaddon’s body lay.

The white wolf had schooled her expression into something solemn but less shocked at least. She wanted to grieve over her poor cousin but everything was required to be an act. If she showed too much care surely Crixus would find some way to hold it against her.

Her mate’s question seemed strange to her. Why did he care to ask her about this? He didn’t seem to care to ask her about other things. Kaya of course annoyed her horribly. Of course it was a family matter, and Kaya was not family. She didn’t care at all for this family, and it seemed like this family didn’t even care for itself these days.

Larisa wanted to scoff at them all and tell that their half-felt sadness wasn’t what Abaddon deserved. Instead she cast her eyes around, looking for some proper spot to bury him. He deserved somewhere pleasant and calm. He deserved a grave fit for a Blanc.

The beach wouldn’t do. Sand washed away, it would only present problems later. “Back by the treeline perhaps, somewhere sheltered but with a view of the ocean.” She looked only to Crixus with her suggestion, her voice caring.

Dragomir followed the rest of the group in the procession, keeping an aloof, respectful air about him. He hadn’t known Abaddon well, and could grieve for no more than the loss of a capable family member and acquaintance, but looking the part, maintaining the delicate status quo of such an event, was important.

As Kaya hung back, he felt a pang of respect for her—a wolf who knows when to step back was seldom found. He padded past her, allowing the tip of his tail to gently brush against her flank. It could be a greeting, reassurance, appreciation, whatever she wanted from him.

Dragomir joined his cousin and sister. He waited patiently as he watched Larisa pick a burial spot. She had a good idea for his burial site, though he wouldn’t have expected anything less from her.

He stayed silent for now, though he would certainly voice his appreciation for her suggestion if Crixus wanted a second opinion. It was the passing of his brother, after all; Dragomir didn’t feel the need to organize anything if he wasn’t wanted.
