Bad ideas were nothing new to Claes.

This one, at least, wasn’t entirely his own. If anyone asked it was totally Anna’s idea, ok? He was totally not getting nailed for this if they got caught.

But ever since Anna had mentioned the hot springs to the east, he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about them - what exactly they might be and all that. Whatever they were, he was pretty dang sure he hadn’t seen anything called a hot spring, so that just made them all the more interesting.

It seemed like they’d been walking forever before they came to a ravine that seemed to lead into some twisty turny shit and Claes scowled. Was this it? Or maybe this led to the springs. Claes noted the wolf scent lingering, but he honestly wasn’t about to let that stop his exploring - especially if this was where the Hellmaw wolves hung out. They’d poked around his home enough, now he could return the favor.

He shot Anna a look from the corner of his eyes, a little challenging smirk pulling at his lips. “Should we keep going?”

Just because Anna was the more sensible of the two didn’t mean she couldn’t get down with a little trouble from time to time. Especially not when egged on by Claes. It was tough to be the moral compass, okay? She had been excited to set out on the journey with her brother, just the two of them, all mature and shit. It was pretty rad.

She noted the smell of wolves, but the territory itself didn’t seem claimed the way the basin was, so there was no thought of trespassing in her mind as she looked bright eyed to Claes and grinned. Should they keep going? “We came all this way.” Of course they should.

He half expected her to say something reasonable, like they should call, or they should turn back. He only grinned wider when she gave a affirmative answer. The Covenant’s little princess wasn’t so perfect outside of the Basin’s walls, now was she?

Claes’ grin turned toothy and he nodded his head in the direction of the pathway that led further in. But he didn’t wait for her to go first, just padded forward, eyes trailing up the walls of the paths carved into the mountain. Idly, he wondered if the basin’ walls were taller than these. “Ya think the springs are this way?”

Padding alongside her brother, head held confidently but side pressed to his for extra security, her nose wriggled. She nodded at his question. “It smells.. strange,” she observed. It was certainly not like the basin.

Eager to see ahead, she picked up into a cautious trot, not intending to race or leave Claes behind, only encourage him to come along a bit faster. Her claws clicked rhythmically on the stony path, tail swaying gently behind her.

*day 1 of morwen’s heat.

Voices came from the crags, faint but palpable. Broken silences weren’t a wholly unfamiliar phenomenon now, but she felt she must meet it each time, nonetheless. Lorenzo had always taken to protecting the springs; to intercepting its visitors, and deeming them worthy or otherwise. Morwen felt she must do the same in his stead, for whatever restitution it provided them both.

The woman rose from her alcove, rounding the wall of stone. Flakes of shale that had clung to her fur as she’d been lying fell away—but the stench stuck with her. Her nose scrunched into a scowl as she approached the main entrance, and sat, waiting. Winter always brought the worst out of wolves in every little way, from mood to smell to the urges and impulses that had possessed her.

She almost hoped she would miss it this year, her heat. It always came, though, just in time to ruin her relief.

Claes just grunted at her nod, eyes flicking here and there. There wasn’t much to see just yet - just lots of rocky walls. But Anna was right, it did smell strange. Whether or not they were picking up on the same scent had yet to be seen, however. The scent that made it’s way to Claes was familiar, but in a vague sort of way. His lips wrinkled at it, but he remained silent.

Excitement over a new place to explore had him distracted enough that the scent didn’t bother him much - not even with the distant wolf scent attached. Moving into a pace that matched Anna’s was easy - just like moving along in tandem with her was. “What if we get lost?” There wasn’t much worry in the question, really, just a vague sense of excitement, tone playfully taunting. He knew they’d be able to find their way back out, but messin’ with Anna was second nature.

Beaming a taunting little smile right back at Claes, Anna huffed. “If you get lost, I will get you unlost.” She snaked her neck toward him to nip playfully at his fur, feeling lighthearted with the new sensations of this place.

As they rounded a corner Anna stopped abruptly, head raising and ears erect. There was a wolf here, and she had not forgotten Eve’s caution as to the reputation of the not-pack that apparently dwelled nearby. She bumped against her brother’s shoulder in a cautioning manner, hoping he would mind his manners for once in his life, then shifted her weight and called out to the silhouette ahead. “Hello.”

The sounds of adolescent musing grew more palpable; something regarding getting lost. A quiet huff escaped Morwen’s nose, and her eyes lidded as she frowned. Hardly any temper to spare, she was now faced with the manners and rationale of a pair of whelps. She’d had to become used to it, sidling up to Hellmaw, but right now… she hadn’t the patience.

Finally, the two came into view, both dark in coloration, and similar in size to her. The girl spoke first.

Hello.

“Mm. Greetings,” Morwen echoed, tail flicking to rest beside her haunch. The woman had positioned herself at the ravine’s mouth, with the waters sprawling at her backside, just out of reach. The sky opened behind them, bordered by the tops of evergreens. Through the sulfur, she found a scent that permeated only the basin: Covenant. A sigh was breathed.

“You two are far from home,” she observed. “The basin is quite a ways west. Is there something specific that brought you to my home?”

She already knew. Unless the Covenant was in shambles, too, they came for the water, as most did. Exercising some amount of omniscience over them may earn their respect, though, and Morwen was keen to use such a method.

Claes only awarded Anna with a scoff and a fancy side-step to evade her teeth. The scent he’d picked up on was only getting stronger the further they went - and the turn of a corner revealed exactly why. He hadn’t expected to come across a wolf so soon.

His muzzle wrinkled at the smell -similar to the smell that had clung to Momma not long ago- and he stepped back to Anna’s side, close enough that when Anna sought to bump against his shoulder, he would be there. He leaned into the movement, naturally, and he didn’t draw away - quietly protective, cautious.

Anna, of course, greeted the wolf and that left Claes to observe silently. To try and decipher if this wolf might be worth worrying about or if she was just the talking type. His expression smoothed while his eyes wandered, focusing on the landscape behind the wolf while Anna made nice.

He couldn’t stop the small shift of his weight, forward when he spotted the pools behind the dark wolf. Were those the springs, then? His gaze shifted from cautious to interested, a subtle nudge into Anna’s shoulder, voice hushed. “Fjädrarna?”

/// I don’t recall if Morwen could understand Steph in any threads they might have been in so for clarity’s sake, just in case he’s basically asking “The Springs?” because google is weird.

Anna peered at the stranger thoughtfully. She recognized their scent- that of the basin, but this wolf was not familiar to her. Not even her strange scent was familiar. She padded a little bit closer as she spoke, but stopped again, a respectful (and hopefully safe) distance. Her brother’s whisper claimed her attention momentarily, and she shrugged and hummed in response. She supposed these were the springs- and she wanted access to them.

“Only exploration, madam. You have visited our basin?” Her head tilted with curiosity. Did she know Relic? Her father? Or perhaps even her mother?

Though the girl did most of the talking, the boy finally spoke, and in sounds she didn’t understand. Morwen’s whiskers flared slightly. As the girl came nearer, she stood, tail following the curvature of her spine as it stuck out past her hind legs. Her hackles remained smoothed, and teeth hidden, for the time being. Hopefully, the girl would get the hint, and stay where she was.

“I’ve been near it,” she clarified. “The land around it has a distinct smell, which you both carry.” The umber woman observed the two young wolves, silently weighing her options.

“I wonder how you two may have felt if I’d welcomed myself into your home,” she mused nonchalantly, shifting her weight, waving her tail. “Wolves don’t take kindly to strangers invading the spaces they’ve claimed.” She waited, intent on their reactions. They were still young; she wasn’t keen on baring her fangs at them—but they had to learn boundaries, nonetheless.

And she didn’t have much patience to spare.

When Anna moved forward, Claes did too. He kept himself firmly at her side, sharp eyes watching the stranger. He fought the urge to bristle, to step in front of Anna or something equally protective. He knew Anna wouldn’t take too kindly to him trying to boss her in front of a stranger, so he kept his shoulder pressed to hers, mouth shut, for the time being.

He would much rather be checking out the hot springs behind the wolf, but taking his eyes off of her wasn’t an option, not with Anna closing the distance.

When the wolf spoke again, wondering aloud about how Claes and Anna might have felt about her intruding on the Basin, Claes just sniffed. But, this place wasn’t claimed, from what Claes knew. At least, not by a real pack. He bit his tongue against the urge to say just that, eyes narrowing a bit. Claes knew damn well wolves didn’t take kindly to strangers invading their claimed lands - he, himself, hated it. But he was only a child, no one cared what Claes had to say.

He shrugged. “Most intruders don’t care what I think, welcome or not.” Because Relic or Pa or someone else would allow it, Claes’ opinion be damned.

The basin had a distinct smell perhaps in the way that all places did.. now this place, on the other hand.. it was more than distinct. Anna didn’t think she would forget it. Dwelling on this as she was, it nearly took her off guard when the stranger continued talking, this time in a way that the girl took as somewhat accusatory. Her nose twitched.

“We allow visitors to our home,” she said. “And it is fully marked as a pack-inhabited territory.” This place wasn’t the home of a real pack, so far as she knew.

The tip of Morwen’s snout wrinkled just slightly. She couldn’t remember if Relic had offered her solace when she had aired near his borders; she’d done much to lock summer and its memories away. He had been kind, though, so the girl’s reply didn’t come as much of a surprise—merely an inconvenience.

“Not unchecked, I’d hope.” She studied the two of them further, wondering whose brood they were. They spoke a strange tongue, like a male who had passed her quite some time ago, on the day she met Tunglid. His name and face, though, escaped her.

She had noticed the subtle jab at her group’s legitimacy. It was bothersome, especially with a sticky temper, eager to grab onto anything that may irritate it more. Morwen sighed into the sulfur that billowed around the chamber, her breath pushing it into a whorl towards them.

The woman had no reply. She had no reason to prove herself, nor those who stood with her. This was more a matter of respect than quantity, as it always was.

“What are your names?” she asked, looking between the two of them. “Lots of wolves come here expecting to play in the pools, and leave; not to be met with any kind of opposition. They’re rarely so respectful as to even provide a name.”

Perhaps that’s why Lorenzo had accepted her: she’d given hers, willingly. The pit between her ribs ached.

Anna’s response wasn’t unexpected, but it still had a slight scowl tugging at his lips. She always seemed much more inclined to be kind to the strangers that wondered in. He wasn’t sure how she did it. Even with his attempts to be more welcoming, more like Anna, it was easy to fall back on the front.

More unchecked than I’d like,” Claes grumbled, halfheartedly. As much as he didn’t like the comings and goings of strangers, and even the wolves who sought to join, it wasn’t his place to decide who came and who stayed. He didn’t have a say, not really. Relic chose who to keep around and Claes just had to live with it.

The Basin would always be his and Anna’s more than any stranger that wandered in, and that had to be all that mattered, in the end.

He sniffed when the wolf asked for their names. He pondered letting Anna answer for a moment. Or not answering at all. He glanced back at the pools behind the wolf, just a flick of his eyes before they focused again on the dark female. “Claes. She’s Anna.” A pause, a flick of his eyes towards Anna this time. He kept his expression rather neutral, but there was a high chance Anna could spot the mischief dancing in his eyes. See? He could be perfectly pleasant. He wouldn’t ruin Anna’s chances of getting a proper look at those springs if he could help it.

To her surprise, it was Claes that offered up their names, and she glanced at him in time to see the look he gave her, to which she returned a small smirk. Her attention switched back to the stranger, though, ears forward. “We did not intend to intrude,” she explained once the introductions were given, hoping that this wolf would in turn give her name.
