As long as she kept the mountains behind her there surely wouldn’t be a problem with returning. The desert was a place that she had seen only from above, just like every other place other than the mountain. It was the first time she was experiencing the texture of the plain sand, the utterly barren wilderness and the feeling of being out of her element. She very much didn’t like how she felt and not only that, but she stood out like a sore thumb. Just her luck - how in the hell would she be able to sneak upon herds and gain information about the way they were going and what else was here if she did? Also, there wasn’t a damn thing around. Good thing she ate in the morning because there wasn’t a fucking prey item around.

She was beginning to think this ‘mission’ was ill-advised, Tomas. She was beginning to imagine things even in the middle of god-knows-where, like water, because water created lush places like the valley that had been to the west and this place was far from it. Her tongue hung out of her mouth loosely, eyelids low to block out the piercing sunlight that somehow didn’t bake the land like it probably did in the summer. That was one thing she was thankful for, also that if there were animals, there was barely anything here to hide their scent. But nope, nothing. Actually.

A wolf scent, and another, actually there were a few dotted around the area, and her imagination turned into reality at the sight of the ripples of water she seemed to brush off earlier. Blocking the area of the first sign of water she had seen for miles? Fuck no. Easily, she dismissed the barrier and trotted towards it. These must have been crazy-ass wolves if they chose to live here, and even crazier to believe she would remain hospitable in her case of thirst.

She remained alert.

Kato thought he could feel his leg strengthening day by day, but still. The dang thing wouldn’t work like it used to. All scabs were healed up now, even the biggest, nastiest one that had sealed up the gash Sokol had left in his leg. But it was still weaker than it had been, and he couldn’t walk without a pretty pronounced limp.

Kato still hadn’t had the will to venture far from the Gorge, so as always, he was resting near the river, watching the water rush by. He didn’t know what he was waiting for anymore - maybe for Amelie to return, maybe waiting for her to finally decide she’d had enough of feeding him. He’d tried many times to sprint across the gorge, but the movement only caused pain in his leg. He knew, if things kept up like this and he couldn’t even hunt for himself, he would have to leave. He couldn’t be a burden to Amelie.

Sighing, his ears twitched at the sound of paw steps and he thought for a moment that Amelie had returned, but when he turned to greet her with a wag of his tail, a great big black wolf greeted him instead - headed for the river, he thought.

His ears flicked back, unsure, but brown eyes stayed locked on the wolf, curious, and cautious. He let out a low chuff, attention grabbing, expression unsure.

/// He’s resting near the bank of the river - should be visible if Kopec is headed towards it.

As she reached the water, she walked down the finer grains of sand and lowered her head to quench her thirst. The water ran over her paws gently, a relief from the dryness she had traveled over, washing away what sand had accumulated under her nails and within the crevices of her paw pads. Ears flattening, she watched her distorted reflection waver from the ripples that were caused by both the current and the disruption her tongue had caused.

For a moment she appeared to be completely relaxed; then there was a bark and immediately her fur stood on edge. Good habits die hard, she guessed. Slowly, she brought her head up and looked in the direction the sound came from. At first, she thought it was Amelia she had seen and a sudden rush of relief flooded through her, and then confusion and finally realization. Amelia was darker, this one was lighter and a male.

“This your river?” She called out suddenly, raising an eyebrow. Should she apologize for walking over the borders or apologize for him for making a boundary line over a life-sustaining source in the middle of god-forsaken nowhere? But.  If it was his home, he could offer her information that would help her - the others packs, if there were any around here, the herds, again if there were any around here. “Name’s Kopec Daniels, I come from up the mountain.” She flicked an ear in the general direction.

The moments before his interruption were quiet - he just watched the wolf drink and then watch herself upon the surface of the river. Kato couldn’t really blame her for that. He’d done the same many times - but he wondered what she might be seeing there, on the surface of the water.

When Kato’s voice was registered, the wolf bristled, and Kato couldn’t help but tense, nervousness creeping up. He couldn’t outrun a wolf with a bum leg, he knew that much. If the black wolf decided he wasn’t wanted here, she would have the advantage and Kato knew that.

He shook his head just a bit at her question, “It’s Amelie’s,” he replied, easily. The desert, the river, the gorge - it was all Amelie’s and Kato was only here because she didn’t mind it. He opened his mouth to tell the wolf Amelie didn’t much like wolves who waltzed in like they owned the place, but her next words cut him off easily, and he stared, uncertainty etching into his features. Had he misheard? Had she said Kopec Daniels?
Kato blinked.

His eyes flicked away to the mountain she signaled with an ear before traveling back to the black wolf, puzzled. His eyebrows drew together, then. Was she serious? Was her last name Daniels, too? Pa had never mentioned any Daniels’ in the mountains - or a Kopec, as far as he recalled. Ma either. “My last name is Daniels, too.” Not that he’d used that surname in a while, really. It was easier to avoid introducing himself with either last name, in the end.

He felt kind of silly, just blurting that out - but honestly, how often did you come across a wolf who shared your last name that you didn’t know?

The kid seemed to become immediately nervous - she could sense it and read the emotions very clearly. She was an intimidating figure, and it could be used to intimidate others when she wanted to, but honestly, that really wasn’t what she wanted to do. She just wanted answers to the questions she hadn’t uttered yet. Maybe she ought to ask them then - he cleared up her mistake quickly, uttering about a wolf named ‘Amelie’. A hauntingly coincidence of ‘Amelia’. Surely, they couldn’t be the same wolf; Amelia obviously wasn’t the type to change her name to something so similar to her birth one and live in the desert out of all places, right?

No, Kopec was exaggerating. There was little to no chance. She still smelt her scent around the mountain, at times. Plus, this was too far to travel in such a short amount of time. Kopec had left at the crack of dawn; her sleeping schedule was all kinds of fucked up. The dark girl was surprised more than once today, and there were still more surprises coming. The boy also shared the last name of Daniels; her yellow eyes widened a fraction and her jaw dropped slightly. “What.” She stated, in the mannerism more of a statement than a question.

She remembered Tomas and Igbo saying that there was family of hers down here, children that were offspring of her disastrous brother. Maybe he was joking, trying to get payback for her waltzing inside his- Amelie’s home. Moving closer, she stopped a good couple feet away from him to lessen the ‘straining to hear your voice’ and have a normal conversation. As she got closer, she realized how much smaller he was than her. But then again, everyone seemed to be. But the Daniels she knew were giants. She would settle this quickly.

“Who’s your dad then?” She sat down.

It took a moment for Kato to settle, to loosen up the tense muscles. Once he realized Kopec didn’t seem so inclined to aggression, he let his posture relax again, watching the black wolf with renewed curiosity.

The single word she uttered didn’t sound much like a question, just a statement or something. It was a little confusing, really. Was he supposed to explain? Repeat himself? He fiddled with the idea of doing so for a moment, but movement drew his attention again, and chocolate eyes flicked to catch the movement of the black wolf.

She was coming closer, then, closing the distance between them; the comfort zone. Kato walked himself back into a sit, scarring leg stuck out beneath him. He cocked his head at Kopec after a moment, frown pulling at his lips.

My Pa was Elliot,” he returned. It was easier to expose that little bit of information out here - to a stranger that shared his last name - than it had been before. He wouldn’t deny, he was curious if this stranger with his last name might know his Pa.

It was a strange thing, learning you had possible relatives living you didn’t even know about.

The boy sat down and relaxed in front of her, answering her question with relative ease. The answer, however, proved that every story she had heard of Elliot was true. He really did breed all of those females, he really was that messed up. Then where were the rest, especially if they were all her age? How many were there? How much more family did she have? Kopec felt a little less lonely, for once.

”Elliot is my brother.” She felt sick saying that, it left a bad taste in her mouth. Did he know that he was an overbred mistake with the purpose of simply gaining numbers for his father’s kingdom? ”Half brother; Nima Daniels was my mother.” Then it occurred to her that he said ‘was’ rather than ‘is’ in the same manner that she did with her mother - did the boy disown his own father? She couldn’t blame him if that were the case.

”Why do you say ‘was’?” Kopec couldn’t hide the blooming curiosity that bubbles and brewed within the cauldron of her mind.

Elliot is my brother.

Out of all the things Kopec could have said, he hadn’t expected that - that Kopec, someone his age, might be the sister of his Pa. His expression betrayed his bewilderment. “What does that make us?” Kato knew Ma’s and Pa’s, brothers and sisters - and he knew Aunt Nettles. But what did you call the sister of your Pa? Nettle hadn’t been related to them, not really. Nettle just was.

It still twisted him all up inside thinking of her and he frowned, fought to keep his expression from falling any further than that. Kopec’s question was enough to have his attention pulled away from himself again. “Prob’ly the same reason you do,” Elliot was his Pa, Nettle was his Aunt, Eden was his home. He knew well enough what that word meant - the loss that went along with it, most times.

If you live in the mountains, why are you here?”

What did that make them? Her ears flicked. ”You’re my nephew.” She guessed. Truth be told, she didn’t really know how it all worked to be precise, but she guessed that’s what they were. But nevertheless he was a Daniels; they were still family.

Was, her nephew repeated again. “He’s dead?” She knew what ‘was’ meant, but she needed clarification before returning.

The reason why she was here. ”I was sent here to retrieve information on the herds that run through the area.” Simple and to the point. ”I never got your name.” first name.

Apparently, Kopec being Pa’s sister made him her Nephew. It was all sort of confusing, so Kato just nodded, thoughtful.

He frowned when she prodded further about Pa, gaze turning back to the river. He’d made it pretty clear that he was and he wasn’t so keen on saying it out loud. Again, he nodded, biting back sharp words. Kato wasn’t one to lash out, but with everything that had happened, he found anger quicker to bubble up. But he only sighed, letting it dissipate. It wasn’t Kopec’s fault she wanted clarification - it was Kato’s fault for being so sensitive.

She didn’t deserve whatever words fought to free themselves.

After a moment, Kato blinked and swung his gaze back to the black wolf, head cocked. “There aren’t many, especially not since winter set in.” They’d all moved off - further into the valley where food would be easier to find, or elsewhere. Kato didn’t pay the herds much attention. He could barely hunt a rabbit, anymore.

Kato Nesryn-Daniels,” a mouthful, but Kopec had given him her name, and he liked including Ma’s last name, too.

Do you have siblings up on the mountain? More family?” Did he have more family up in the mountains?

She didn’t really know how to feel about learning that her true arch nemesis, her one true enemy, her second brother, had been killed at the hands of another who had not endured the pain that he had caused her family. She let her eyes become hooded and fall to the sandy terrain for a moment, deep in thought. It was hard to let go of someone that affected your life so much in such a negative way.

Perhaps it was some ill thinking that sought its way from her mind telling her that she should’ve been the one to see the life drain from his eyes. What was she suppose to do with the information? Elliot was dead, that fucker had gotten what he deserved.

So what now? Was she suppose to move on and live out her days on the mountain? Kopec couldn’t help but fall back on some pup-like wonder on what else was out there. The feeling of a different than sharp texture sparked a flame within her being - one that sought closure but had received it.

Her physical demons were gone but the memories still fed the ones that lurked within her broken heart. Her ears fluctuated between standing straight and falling back before finally she was pulled from her thoughts and they remained still, positioned upright.

Kato Nesryn-Daniels. She wondered what the hell a Nesryn was - was that his middle name or something? He stated the answer she had come out her for. There was nothing here, as was seen from the blatant, desolate wasteland she stood upon. But it was at least some confirmation of her inquiries. And then came the god-forbid question because please, it could’ve been any other question than that one.

”Had another brother, Tychus. He’s dead, fell off the mountain.” Would it scare him? She was half curious and half testing if the flame that burned within each Daniels; the flame that signified bravery and just nature, was true in him. ”I have two sisters. Amelia And Naga. Naga is a hermit and Amelia is lost in the fantasy of a world that doesn’t exist.”

”We have a handful of wolves and are in the process of merging with another pack. Do the names Igbo or Tomas ring a bell?”

Silence fell for a moment after that, and Kato just watched Kopec - lost in thought as she was. Kato wasn’t sure what she might be thinking, but he was curious. Was she disturbed by the confirmation that Pa was dead? That her brother was dead? He couldn’t tell, but he couldn’t imagine any other reaction from someone who was family.

When Kopec spoke up again, announcing that she had another brother, who fell off the mountain, Kato frowned just a bit. “Sorry,” It didn’t bother him like it might have before. Before Nettle and before Pa. Any death was mild compared to the one he’d witnessed Nettle suffer. The thought made his stomach roll, but he just blinked, a small huff escaping him.

Did death follow everyone around the way it seem to follow Kato? And Kopec? Each of them had many deaths to speak about, and it was disheartening. Just like Nettle said, he thought, they weren’t meant to be happy. Not with family and friends dropping dead around them. It was interesting to think he had more family on the mountains that he didn’t know about, though- made him curious. He wondered where Aethon had gone, for the millionth time. Knew Ma and Akira were at the hill pack, and now he had family on the mountain.

He shook his head at Kopec’s question. “No, haven’t heard of them. Who are they?”

He apologized and her eyes narrowed for a moment. What was he apologizing for? She couldn’t say it was ‘alright’ because it wasn’t, she couldn’t say it would get better, because it never did. They just moved on. The dark girl shrugged her shoulders in response. ”It’s whatever.” A true Kopec response.

So he never heard of Igbo or Tomas. ”Igbo was in The Kingdom, I’m not sure about Tomas but I know he knew your dad.” In what caliber, she didn’t know, but he knew of Elliot, that was for certain.

”He’d like to meet you.” and probably adopt you too but yknow.

”Why are you staying in the middle of god knows where?” Was this a game of 40 questions or something, honestly, she really didn’t know at this point.

Kato didn’t think it was whatever, but he kind of got it. It was easier not to dwell on it. Easier to keep the thoughts from going round and round in his mind than it might have been to keep them there.

Kato’s head cocked at the mention of the Kingdom, ears cupping forward with interest. He hadn’t heard someone else mention his home in…he wasn’t sure how long. At least that confirmed that Kopec wasn’t spinning some intricate tale, or something. “I don’t remember him. Is he family?”

Kato couldn’t deny that he was curious, but unless this Igbo came to the desert any time soon, Kato wasn’t sure he could meet him. Kato would like to think it would be nice, knowing more wolves who knew his Pa, but he knew what the general population thought of him.

And still, maybe it was a bit naive, but he wouldn’t mind finding people who had good stories of him. He didn’t really have anything to say to that, though, so he just let out a little hum of agreement. He wouldn’t make Kopec promise to bring him here or something equally silly, but it wouldn’t stop him keeping his eye out for them when she left.

Why was he here? It was such a complicated reasoning anymore, really, and he wasn’t sure where to even begin. He flicked a paw at the dust, watching a small stone go tumbling away. “We left home for a pack in the hills and I wasn’t happy there, so I left to find my own home.” Yadda, yadda, yadda, now he had a bum leg and he wasn’t going anywhere else very fast.

Not even that he really wanted to, but being stuck in one place for so long without the option to even leave made you want to do just that.

Was Igbo family? ”Yeah.” He was to her at least, even if he sometimes acted like a thorn to her side. ”Igbo is family, as well as Tomas.” She didn’t mention that they weren’t blood related though, it wasn’t important. That’s not what mattered.

Kato continued to explain why he was here in the first place and she flicked an ear in satisfaction to his story. She wasn’t much of a story-teller either, was that something that ran through the Daniels blood? ”You can come back and meet them. Reunite with your family, or what’s left of it, at least.” She trailed off as she continued her words.

Yellow eyes fell on his leg. It did look swollen and odd. ”Igbo can fix your leg, he’s a doctor.”

If he wouldn’t come back, she wouldn’t force it. It wasn’t the first time that a Daniels disappointed her and she believed it wouldn’t be the last time, either. It was his choice at the end of the day, something her mother would say, or something along the lines of that.

ooc - if there’s anything wrong with how Kopec assumed his leg was, lmk!

Igbo was family and so was someone named Tomas, she said. How much did he have in the mountains, he couldn’t help but wonder.  The prospect of leaving the desert, of leaving Amelie settled a knot of stress into his stomach. Amelie had done much for him, letting him stay, and then hunting for him while he couldn’t hunt for himself. Still, he couldn’t help but think maybe somewhere with more wolves would be better for him.

It would put less strain on Amelie, at least, if she didn’t have a cripple to look after. He heaved a little sigh, shrugging at the words in the end. “Not sure I can climb a mountain,” A small gesture to his leg signifying the healing injury. It was better now, but still, climbing a mountain seemed about as doable as running without pain.

Some part of him wanted to, though. He wanted to meet Kopec’s siblings, Igbo, and Tomas. His Ma had to be at the Hollow, though, and that’s where he’d be going as soon as he could travel without his leg giving him fits. He thought. He was unsure anymore. It’d been so long since he’d left, it seemed. And Ma hadn’t come looking, only Nettle and Aethon.

/// It’s just mostly scabs/scarring at this point. The main gash where it ended up torn is the only scab left, the rest would be new scar tissue.
