Catrine walked peacefully along the river. Her paws made neat prints in the fresh snow that was still falling to the ground and she glanced up and down their border, not expecting to find much of anything. She couldn’t shake a tense feeling between her shoulder blades. Perhaps it was the problems with the Brotherhood, or maybe her heat was creeping up on her. It was winter after all, and she was looking forward to the prospect of pups whenever it decided to arrive.

She tried to keep too many thoughts of the future from her mind. The pack was surviving, if not thriving. Members had left, and some of their guests. The pups were physically grown but many were not yet ready to take on new roles as they might in a few more months. Catrine wasn’t sure what to do with it all, an unfamiliar feeling for the otherwise very certain woman.

At least patrolling was an easy task, and something to take her mind off of others. She’d focus on today, and try to let worries about tomorrow breeze over her.

It didn’t take her long to pick up the scent of Catrine. A layer of snow had piled upon her tiny body as she had slept, er, napped. Truthfully, the girl wasn’t even tired, it was something to pass the time. She had thought that maybe Carrick wanted some alone time, to not be the constant reminder that his friend that he perhaps considered his sister, had stayed and not his blood brother. The thought was on low burn at the back of her mind, the notion of worry that hummed at her that perhaps something had turned out wrong.

While it was not her business, she still cared for Carrick and wouldn’t let him go through the grief she had months prior.

So, as she stirred from her small pile of snow, she stood up and shook her thick, fluffy fur out as her grey-blue eyes scanned the area for any sign of a face to go with the scent. Finally, she narrowed in upon the frame of the white female who she had grown increasingly worried for. A missing son and all this work piled onto her - how could she deal?

”Catrine?” She called out softly, stopping just up the hill from her.

Carrick was a-hunting for a wolf. A nice white lady? Named Catrine? Seen her about? He hadn’t. Had she been avoiding him? After Cade, he’d barely seen her and he had barely spoken a word to her since…Ace. He had a groundhog for her, an excuse for seeking her out-trick he’d learned from her. He hoped his mom didn’t see through it. She probably would.

Tracking her right now made him feel uneasy, remembering the activity he’d been doing just before finding Nanook burying his brother. He’d sought a brother that day, and now he sought a mother…He knew she was fine, but what if? It bugged him. It bugged him that it bugged him. But he was up, and going, and doing something, which was honestly a victory for Carrick. At first, without Cade, he’d been a little down and distinctly lazy, napping most of the time and not hunting, ever. Occasionally patrolling or answering calls, but that was it. And after Ace? He was very lethargic, pretty much barely existing. He ate, sure, because after seeing Ace like that he sure as hell wasn’t going out like that, but it was so hard to remember he was hungry. He didn’t feel hungry, not until he actually started eating and then it hit him like a truck. He drank more regularly, because he liked to hang out by the river when not asleep in the oddest of places.
Really, the boy was a mess but he was still very stubbornly surviving. He was alive and he was staying that way. No brokenness and sadness and dying for Carrick, no sir. <I>He<I> wouldn’t let down his loved ones.

He was so lost in his thoughts, as usual, he didn’t notice both his mother or his friend until Isi spoke up, calling out for his mother and snapping the pup out of his reverie, head snapping up in surprise and throwing a glance over at Isidore. He stared at her for a long second, then a fond smile spread across his face and his tail started up a soft wag. “Hi Isi! You find my mom?” She was calling for Catrine, after all, so maybe she was around? He hadn’t spotted her yet.

A voice pulled her out of her focus. Though, really, looking at frosted river bank wasn’t an overly exciting prospect, particularly when it was quiet around the hollow. She turned with an easy smile towards the girl - her favorite girl. She felt a little pang of worry since Senna had gone. Catrine never had gotten to warn the girl about the winter, and males. She could only hope that the spunky yearling was flourishing elsewhere.

“Isidore, darling, how are you?” She called gently, turning to pad toward the girl. Her son’s voice called out as well and she brought her head up about as far as it could go, though her boy was somewhere out of view from her as well. “Carrick dear, I’m right here.” Catrine called in response, a little louder. She felt like she had said that same thing a million times when he was tiny, but she felt proud every time she was around her happily growing children. Well, perhaps they were done growing now, but she still hoped they were happy.

She should have known that finding the pups still around the pack would be a salve to her worried mind. It was easy to to absorbed into their lives and forget some of the more adult troubles that were going on. Though, she had said something to Cassian about explaining mates and possible future siblings, hadn’t she?

She remained still as Catrine looked over at her, her tail wagging idly behind her in the gentlest of motions. She looked the same, from here, she did sound a bit more tired than she remembered though. But that’s not what mattered, what mattered was making her adoptive family happy again.

They didn’t deserve to feel forgotten - no one did. “I’m alright, Catrine.” She offered with a small smile. About to move forward, the girl paused and looked to the right of her, seeing another approaching white figure. One she recognized, too. One that looked a bit more chipper and more like himself.

Her smile engulfed into a grin as he greeted her. “Yessiree! It’s about time we all hung out together again, huh?” At least, she hoped. Isi needed to feel ‘fun’ again - it had been really mopey the past couple of weeks.

Ah, there she was! “Hi Mama.” His greeting is gentle and affectionate as it was when he was smaller, happier, less….of a mess, really. Staring at the clean white of his mother and well-groomed creams of Isidore made him suddenly aware he was not-so-clean. But hey, he had food! He scooped up his groundhog and padded closer through the snow, tail still waving slow but happy. “I got a ‘hog for you, Mom. Sorry, didn’t know I’d find you too, Isi, or I would have brought you something too.”

Hung out again? “Yeah! Definitely.” He’d been out here to find his mom, finding Isidore was an added bonus and he’d honestly missed their presence. Maybe it’d be a better idea to try spending time with his friends, rather than lazing about in the tangled, murky depths of his own mindscape.
Yeah, now that he thought about it, perhaps his behavior as of late hadn’t been the healthiest. But he was still here, still going strong. He had that, at least, and he was trying to do better. Survive, like Nanook said.

Catrine closed the distance between herself and Isidore and leaned out to give the pup a gentle lick right between her ears. She imagined that Isidore was about full grown now, and as large as she’d ever get, but Catrine still thought of her as a pup.

She turned her head with a broad smile for her son as he padded closer. She grinned at the gift. “Thank you dear,” she smiled. “Is hunting something you enjoy quite a bit?” She didn’t want to give them new ranks in the pack just yet, but she wanted an idea for them when the time came.

Both seemed very excited at the prospect of spending some quality time together and Catrine was as well. “Yes, what would you both like to do?” She asked glancing between them.

“Though…” Catrine stepped forward towards Carrick and reached a paw out to try to move the boy around a little. He was as big as her - bigger really - but that didn’t stop her from being his mother. Catrine leaned forward and began to lick at him, smoothing out his fur and doing her best to clean it. This might take a while actually.
