Larisa paced beneath the trees. She was torn, conflicted, unhappy. That last one wasn’t new though. She’d put off the announcement about pups but it was growing awkward. Crixus hadn’t said anything. Was he oblivious, did he think she was trying to conceal it? She knew she couldn’t for very much longer no matter what she did. The rain trickled down onto her, freezing cold as it was. Still, she liked to stand in the water of the bay, this was almost pleasant in comparison.
Still, something tugged at her. She glanced to the east. Instead of calling for her mate she could just set off through the trees, swim across the bay and vanish into the night. The thought appealed to her. She pressed her eyes shut for a moment. Why couldn’t she run? Why didn’t her legs just carry her away to somewhere else?
Her eyes snapped back open and her muzzle pointed skyward, calling out for her mate. Even her howl was a lie, it sounded so much more pleasant than she felt. She took a deep breath and fixed a placid smile on her face. Why was she doing this? Why, why, why?
She didn’t understand this places hold on her. She didn’t want to stay, but she couldn’t seem to go. Maybe something would shove her out. Maybe her unloving mate would finally say something so foul that she walked away from this all. Maybe the stress of living in this place would eat her from the inside out and it wouldn’t be her problem to worry about anymore.
