Rota was in her element once they hit the plains. She was only ever out this far to hunt, anyway, and all the wide flat lands got her all hyped up and ready to sink her teeth into something three times her size.

“I always have better luck by the river,” she woofed to Natasha, keeping her eyes and ears peeled for any sign of a recent herd. Though it was probably mostly frozen over by this point, it was still the most reliable water source for miles.

((I’m sorry tues/wed evenings I don’t get much online time between parents and movie night with buddies I swear I am here!))

Natasha was eyeing up the surroundings - easy enough since out here it was all flat landscape, all snow covered right now. Her paws left wide prints behind.

“Sounds good. Maybe we can try to chase them back towards the glen - if we run one there and kill it closer by, it’ll be easier to take bits home to the cache.”

| no worries! as you can tell I’m not exactly the fastest poster in the world, either

Yeah, she supposed hunting anything bigger than a rabbit wouldn’t be too easy to lug all the way back to the Falls. Still… ”Well you did pull me out of a mud pit. I bet we could drag a deer back home, easy.”

Especially if Natasha brought back the delicious meaty bits and Rota wore the skin. Unless she could pilot the deer without having to skin it first, like some flesh Gundam with an edible, padded interior.

Natasha flicked her tail at the compliment, pleased. She agreed - Brothers could do anything when they worked together. “True. Teamwork, that’s what it means to be a Brother.” She commented, sniffing at a yellowed patch of snow where a deer had urinated. Not too closed though, she didn’t want that smell on her fur.

“Got a herd, smell them?” Natasha adjusted her step a little. Not a big herd from what she could tell from this distance. But they didn’t need big. They needed old, young, weak.

Teamwork. Too bad Altair never got that message.

Rota trailed behind a bit as Natasha investigated, casting her own gaze around at the surrounding hills. With how flat everything was around here in comparison to the glen, she wouldn’t have been surprised if she was able to see the herd before she smelled them.

She actually did see something, however, something that was most definitely not a herd of deer. Rota squinted. The horizon shimmered as the dying sunlight cast its last rays of the day on the icy river, illuminating the strange silhouette moving along its shore.

”Uh,” she piped up, still squinting. ”I think I found them?”

The silhouette was tall like a deer, but it was also very, very wide. Like grotesquely so. It was practically just a giant oval balanced precariously on four stilts. It also didn’t have antlers, was alone, and — now that she thought about it — probably wasn’t a deer. Unless deer suddenly started growing really long feathery tails and Rota was just seriously out of the loop.

Natasha wasn’t looking in the same direction, still snuffling after deer-scent. When Rota said she found them she adjusted her stance and squinted at where he nose was pointing.

“That is not a deer.” She spoke definitively, and broke into a trot to close some of the distance. It looked enough like a deer Nat was pretty convinced they could hunt it.

“Oh! I think it’s one of those horse things! Let’s go after that, look at how much meat’s on one of those!” Screw the deer. Natasha wanted to try something new.

Whatever it was, Natasha was already going after it. Rota was quick to lope on after her, her nose sniffing curiously.

Upon closer inspection, the horse thing was marginally bigger than the biggest deer thing Rota ever saw, but luckily it didn’t have any stabby stabby head branches.

Conclusion: they could take it.

“It’s so huge we could probably just chase it into the river and wait for it to drown,” Rota murmured, eyeing the bank for any cracks or holes in the ice. It would probably be hard to drag it out of the river once it was dead, but if they accidentally chased it further into the hills, they’d have to do it anyway.

Not enough action for Natasha. Her ears flipped back then forwards again.

“What if it can swim? Those legs look stupid admittedly. But it might be a good swimmer, or it might just find solid enough ice to get across altogether.” She pointed out. “Let’s circle behind it and chase it back towards the glen. Then we just treat it like a deer, bite it until it gets weak then take it down.”

Yeah, Rota figured that plan probably wouldn’t be as action-packed as Natasha would’ve liked. She made some good points, though. “Right,” she mused, already imagining the plan in action. With the significant lack of cover out in the hills and the fact that they both stood out in stark contrast against the snow, they’d probably have to work fast in order to scare it in the direction they wanted.

“I’ll flank left and you flank right?” She had already dropped into a crouch, her tail swishing lightly at her heels.

Natasha’s pose lowered as well, licking her lips as if she could already taste the blood. Rota would definitely be able to fit inside this ‘horse thing’.

Right.

She nodded at the proposed plan and set off, getting closer to their prey without breaking her crouch. No need to rush, they’d get it running all right. Natasha swung out in a wide circle to get on the river side, moving on the right side.

The silent agreement hung between them as Natasha gave her a nod and immediately stalked toward the horse thing. Rota’s gaze lingered on her retreating form for a split second longer before she moved to enact her side of the plan, pulling up the rear just a few feet behind. It’d be easier if Natasha got to the horse thing first. That way she could then run it back in the direction of Rota and the glen.

Natasha wasn’t really big on hesitation. When she stalked close enough their prey’s head shot up from the snow and stared her way, she froze only for a split second, gathering her muscles.

Man, that thing had a weird face. And a weird nose. And weird ears. And weird hair.

Hopefully it wouldn’t taste weird too. Natasha pushed off boldly and launched like a entire herd of charging bison, letting out a fearsome set of barks with complete confidence that the horse thing was going to run from her.

Natasha stalked steadily closer and Rota kept her body low as she carefully positioned herself at an angle to the horse and the glen, ready to jump up and help her run it back once Nat got it going.

Which was apparently right now because no sooner as she settled herself against the snow did Nat lauch at the bulbous horse thing, barking up a storm.

Well, it didn’t run. It pivoted its rear end at Natasha, who had hunted enough deer to know what came n-

Whap!

Natasha dodged the kick, but her silver eyes widened fractionally as a hard hoof whistled above her head. These things kicked WAY meaner than a deer!

Of course, the words ‘back down’ were not in the Natasha vocabulary. She circled so she was back in front of the horse-thing and made two lunge-type charges, pulling back two steps only to repeat, snarling and barking and sounding generally like a hellhound.

She WAS going to get this thing moving and they were going to find out what it tasted like!

DEFINITELY NOT A DEER.

Rota shot to her feet just as fast when that spindly little leg sliced through the air above Nat’s head in a stiff kick. The horse thing barely even flinched, but neither did Natasha.

She was just so brave and strong and confident that it made Rota’s heart leap into her throat almost as much as seeing her nearly fucking die.

Rota didn’t doubt Nat’s ability to get this horse thing on the run by herself but if there was anyone that was going to get kicked in the head in place of her it was gonna be Rota. She left her little indent in the snow in favor of racing toward Nat and the horse thing, barking and growling right along with her.

Rota backed her up, and that seemed to have done the trick. The horse started to run, and Natasha’s silver eyes glinted with pride, shooting Rota a quick look of pre-victory as she let her third charge escalate into a run. Close calls didn’t bother her.

Any one you walked away from.

Aha, now they could chase, now they’d get it. Man, is was damn fast though for a big blocky body and spindly legs. But Natasha was fast, too. And determined. And with Rota at her side she was going to bring this thing down.
