The water held swiftly to the ice, not yet completely thawed from the previous winter months. A silhouette of a boy nearly blended in to the dark landscape, trailing down the slope of stone that led to the rapids below. August was nervously scaling the rocks, careful to not trip and scrape himself on the more rough edges. His large form appeared clumsy and unsure in this setting.

Gulping as he cleared the last rock, the timber wolf graciously made his way over to the edge of the water, taking the time to catch his reflection in the water. After traveling for so long, he hadn’t had much time to just sit and appreciate his own existence. No, he wasn’t vain in the slightest; in fact, he just wanted to see if his eyes still held the fervor they had left with. A green-eyed glare stared pointedly back at him, giving August the information he needed. Yes, his will was still there.

Distracting himself from his mental wellbeing, he crouched down against the slick rocks to dip his tongue into the blue liquid. Lapping up droplets of water, he felt the cold surface of the ground press up against his underbelly.

When had she last stopped moving?

Rhoea tried to recall, but could not. She hadn’t since the previous night, at least. She had tried, of course—the woman was well beyond tired—but her troubled conscience wouldn’t allow it. It could feel the lapse of movement in her paws; knew when they had stopped running away, and that would never do. She had to keep going. If she didn’t…

Her legs felt numb by the time she made it to the lakeside. She had smelled the crispness of water, the promise of satiation, and couldn’t help tracking it. When, finally, she came to its side, Rhoea paused, throat rasping with each pant. She took several moments to peer all around her before finally lowering her head to drink.

The scent of wolf was in the air, but none of it was familiar to her. That was a good thing. Her worry momentarily stilled, and the woman lapped quietly at the lake’s surface.

His focus had been broken slightly from his pale-eyed reflection when the sound of lapping water saturated the silence. His skull lifted from the crouching position he was in, still not used to having to watch his back. It had been a habit of his to get lost in whatever he was doing and forget that there were bigger, badder, scarier things out there that could easily sniff him out. Not yet startled, however, he slowly rose to a height that he could see the surrounding area better.

A breeze carried the earthen scent that gave away this newcomer, though he wouldn’t have needed the extra help anyways. A smaller female, russet and tan in color, was diligently drinking from the lake’s tap only a few yards away. His fur stood on edge, but his eyes twinkled. Was she from around here, and could direct him to a nearby pack? This thought is what drove him to pursue, lifting a paw to swipe at his jaw to shake away any wetness left from the water.

August padded over to within hearing range, but felt inclined to not frighten the other girl. In exchange for a smoother introduction, he lightly whistled between his bared teeth, a small whine in contrast to his larger build. I mean no harm.

Rhoea heard his footsteps first. Her head lifted swiftly, beads of water dripping off of the hairs on her chin. Though she had smelled him nearby, she couldn’t help how her nerves fired off when the presence of another wolf became palpable.

She saw him edging closer to her portion of the shore. Her muscles quivered, anticipating the need to flee, until he let out something like a whimper, which was more than easy to hear in the silence. The woman willed her body to relax against a great deal of impulsive protest.

Rhoea let out a low woof in response. Her tail hung low at her backside; not expressly friendly, but not aggressive, either. She was reluctant to speak yet.

That was another thing she hadn’t done in a while.

His reaction to the seemingly weary noise that bubbled up her throat was to stiffen, his own shoulders tightening and ears lurching forward. August had never felt the need to assert his dominance and yet still appear approachable; it was always one or the other. He realized the balance between the two was the tricky part. His mouth twitched as if he were about to speak, before he took a deep breath and looked her up and down.

While it was dark and the weight of the night obscured most of her features, it was obvious that she was comparatively smaller than him. Her face, though feminine, was corroded with caution. He found it easiest to focus on her eyes, his own vibrant, green gaze boring into hers.

“You live here?” His voice was deep, rough around the edges with a hint of gracefulness to it that he had taken his latter years to master. When he spoke, it always was in a calm, softened tone, though his expression was typically stern and unrelenting in its strong complexion. He stared at her with his tail raised a length above what hers would have been, already concerned in his role in this new land as man and not boy.

Though the male wasn’t particularly perturbed by her presence, his posture was unsettling. Had Rhoea been existing under different circumstances, or had she known his age, and not only his size, she might not have been so bothered.

The woman stayed where she was, her gaze holding steadfast against his.

“No,” she replied. “I take it you don’t either.” From her place in the darkness of night, she, too, eyed him. His tail was raised; he was determined not to break eye contact. She felt the back of her neck begin to prickle.

She knew every face, every name, in the weald. This male was far from familiar—but what if he was a mercenary, hired to find her?

Rhoea’s expressionless tail flicked across her hocks. Though her heart pounded, she maintained an appearance of utmost composure.

It was his first encounter outside his previous pack lands, thus he felt reasonably uncomfortable in the tense silence. August’s muscles tightened over his shoulders and his body stood as still as a statue. While this female stranger was nonthreatening, he still had to keep his age in mind. The male could still be labelled a pup, though his size wouldn’t be the giveaway.

“I don’t. I come from the north.” His response was intentionally more open than his last, and he even let his line of sight swivel from her eyes to the space behind her right ear.

She was very calm, like him. He blinked slowly, rolling along the balls of his hind legs. The rocky shoreline crunched under his paws, reminding him of where he was and why he had come here.

“You haven’t ran into any pack wolves, have you?”

North. Finally, she could breathe again. Unless he was lying, he came far from the weald—but whether any of them would lie to find her, she wasn’t yet sure. Deceit came more easily to some than others.

She neglected a response to his reply, save for a gentle nod, more to herself than him.

To his next inquiry, she shook her head. “No, I’ve only arrived recently,” she informed. Again, she assumed he hadn’t either. She swallowed dryly with the passing of a couple moments.

“Are you looking for someone?”

When she asked if he was looking for anyone in particular, August blanched for a moment. It had been in his best interest to find a pack and insert himself into the ranks since he had left his northern home in the mountains. For a while, his day-to-day had been plagued by simply keeping his legs moving and scavenging for food to keep him pushing. The question caught him off guard because of the subliminal message behind it: do you have a purpose?

“I just wanted to find a home.” He explained, voice softer than the last time he spoke. His body language inadvertently changed to something leaning towards docile as he thought about what exactly a “home” would look like to him. August envisioned somewhere deep in the woods, shrouded by green forestry. It calmed him to imagine such a place where he could assimilate himself into pack life, and his tail started swaying softly behind him.

“My name is August,” he offered, eyeing her up and down. She was tiny in regards to him, but he felt like she could hold her own. Where had she come from?

She blinked at the lack of discretion in his answer. The woman wouldn’t deem it honest quite yet, but it was a start to easing her anxieties when accounting for their cause. Her tail flicked behind her, and she glanced at the water hesitantly before looking back at him.

She didn’t speak. She had no words for him, so disconnected by age and circumstance from the whimsy of his search that she would not grapple with empathizing.

August. A name was easier to work with.

“Rho,” she replied simply.

Damien was growing increasingly more reluctant to leave Kingsfall with the passing of days. Astred’s abdomen was swelling with pups and it seemed as though they would be amongst the Realm any day now, no more as something distant and daunting, but as living, breathing beings. His children. Although something akin to acceptance had engulfed him in regards to becoming a father, he still hadn’t the slightest idea of how to be a good one. had He had suspicions, the primal knowledge base within him feeding him clues enough, but nothing was known.

When the call met his ears, he did not hesitate to change his course, swerving off the beaten path he’d been following to head directly toward the Shore. When he arrived, his gaze landed upon two young wolves — one a tall, agouti boy, and the other a much smaller female. Both were faces he had never seen before.

The Aesir released deep bark, announcing his presence, and began to advance toward them.

(( several day skipping syrup ))

There was a brief lapse in their exchange when a bark sounded, not far from their position at the lakeside. When she looked its direction, there was a wolf coming towards them. Tall, dark, large, male. Rhoea swallowed dryly. She looked back to August, and back to the approaching wolf.

She needed to go.

The little red woman turned, darting over the rocks and towards the trees in the direction opposite to their trajectories.

It was fine. This was fine. She doubted she would ever see them again anyways.
