She was BACK.

She had done SO MUCH while out ON her OWN, and she was ready to tell everyone in the Brotherhood about how successful she’d been at being the BEST Brother EVER.

Except for the part where she forgot where the glen was.

But she didn’t have to tell anyone that.

Unless they asked, because you couldn’t LIE to another Brother. But she hoped they didn’t ask. Admitting she’d been wrong was just, the worst feeling in the whole world. Maybe worse than not seeing Finni or Momma in, like, forever. But both of those problems didn’t have to happen any more! Because she was baaaack and that meant she WASN’T lost any more and she WASN’T going to have to miss her fam any more!

Scuttling through the undergrowth as quick as she could, muscle memory guiding her just as easily as her own mental memories of what the easiest paths were, Nanna could barely contain a few excited barks despite not seeing anyone else ahead of her yet. Nanna was coming, Brotherhood! Ready the celebrations!

Barks, at the borders. They startled Eyja at first, but a few seconds later she realized the voice was familiar. Eyja got to her paws, a little confused, and feeling very nervous. This could not be real, this had to be a dream. Yeah, she was dreaming, this really wasn’t real.

She started walking, moving toward the borders, towards the path where the graves were, and the only way in and out of the Falls. And as she got closer, she saw that familiar face, running into the Falls. Making noise.

Nanna.

She had returned. But why? And why had she run, in the first place?
Eyja could not believe this, this really couldn’t be real.

She wanted to run over to her daughter and snuggle her, but at the same time she felt angryl Nanna had scared her, ran away and made her worry. Bad child.

All Eyja could do in the end was yell, angrily, scolding.

’’NANNA!’’

Uh

oh.

Nanna froze for a minute, then resumed her gallop down towards her mother, ignorant of who might or might not be under the new graves.

“MOMMA!” she yelled, forced cheerfully, hoping that maybe if she just kept up the happiness mama would be happy too. Right? Don’t be angry, she’s back! Why would anyone be angry at her! Ha ha there was definitely no reason she should get in trouble for this.

Sheeeeee was going to get in trouble when she. For not telling anyone. Yeah. But she did it for reasons! Important ones! “HIII MOMMA!” Just keep smiling!

Lying down in her den back form the waterfall, Natasha awoke and flicked an ear irritably as she was awoken by shouting. She wasn’t close enough to recognize the voice from here. She stuck her head out of the den, careful not to disturb Valykrie too much. She knew the girl didn’t respond to loud noises (Note to self, ask Effie how long until ears started working) but that didn’t mean she was happy about the commotion. Especially since she was stuck in the den right now.

“Can you lot KEEP IT DOWN.” She barked crossly. “Mother of a half-a-day-old pup down here!”

((100% skippable!))

Dull eyes lifted from the remains of her meal; a mouse, fat from the springtime bounty but likely the only thing shed eat today.

That bark….

Finni’s ears pinned back, hackles lifting slightly and muscles tensing.

How dare she come back now?

Leaving whatever scraps were left, the silvery yearling stood and moved in a swift lope towards the sound of her mother’s yelling closeby. She sounded mmmaaaaaaaaaaddddddd! Finni strongly approved, but it was nothing compared to the words she had for her littermate.

As her kins pale coats came into view, Finni rose her voice, gaze icy and challenging despite the tears that welled in their corners. She purposefully kept her distance from Nanna, but moved to stand next to her mother, growling out the only greeting her supposed sister would receive.

“Stark died looking for you, Nanna. I hope whatever adventure you had was worth abandoning your family.”

Nanna was screeching in happiness and Natasha was yelling in annoyance and at the moment her response was very much not appreciated. Eyja did not yell often, but right now she was just utterly pissed at the whole situation. Sorry Natasha. ’’Mind your own business, Natasha!’’ she snapped at the den that apparently was nearby.

Natasha had her kids, huh? Eyja would check in later, she would. But not right now. Not now that Nanna was back and pretending everything was fine. Eyja really didn’t feel this angry, often. She had never snapped at anyone before she was close to. But right now, right now she just didn’t feel like dealing with any of this.

At least Finni backed her up. When had that girl arrived?

Eyja flinched a little as Finni spoke of Stark’s death, and as she sort of blamed it on Nanna, in a way. Eyja looked at Nanna, ears pressing back.

She still had an angry look on her face, but by now her legs were trembling a little. ’’We were worried sick about you. Where the hell have you been and why did you run away?’’
The sternness returned, the one she had often used with Bree, Castor and Asha in the past.

Eyja was regaining parts of her old self slowly, over time.

AUNTY NAT—

Her bubbling enjoyment was wrenched to a halt by the appearance of Finni’s face. It should have been an equally joyful sight, but Finni looked like Nanna had never seen before. Then her sister spoke at her, and it threw her to a stop, paralyzed on the downward path as she gaped, not understanding what was happening.

Whatever Momma said, it didn’t come through clear enough to her ringing ears, thoughts flooded out by what she’d just been told by Finni. She couldn’t hear anything around her any more except the blood in her ears. She could barely see her family in front of her through tear-blurred eyes.

“No he didn’t!” she shouted hoarsely after the stunned silence had passed, tears beginning to stream down her face. “Take it back!” Why. Why was Finni. Being so cruel. That wasn’t funny. It wasn’t funny and it didn’t happen Stark couldn’t just die!

Oh, finally realizing something was wrong? Nanna looked very, very hurt by the words, and though Finnis heart ached with the pain of keeping a distance, she distinctly remembered what shed said to Aunty Nat—and still firmly believed in it.

“She can stay away, and so can the others. I don’t have any siblings or a father. The Brotherhood doesn’t need them, Mum doesn’t need them, and I don’t need them.”

Any sympathy the silvery girl had for her littermate was gone as soon as she started yelling, calling Finni a liar. Anger fluffed up her hackles, lips peeling back to reveal sharp white fangs. It was, perhaps, the most ferocious Finni had ever managed to look.

“How dare you come home like nothing is wrong and call me a liar! Why did you bother coming back if you don’t trust me to tell the truth?”

A broken noise, something between a snarl and a sob, fell from Finnis throat.

“I have no sister.”

With that, Finni turned her face away, stepping closer to her mother protectively and ignoring the tears that ran down her face. She had nothing to say to that traitor, but she wouldn’t leave her mother here to face this alone. At least one of her children had returned…. but one had never left and she hoped Eyja remembered that.

Natasha still couldn’t hear everything clearly up at the top of the cliff path, but it was clear nobody was listening to her because the sound of raised voices continued. Including something that sounded suspiciously like mind your own business, directed at HER. Both things were enough for her temper to flare.

Natasha gave Valkyrie a quick lick. “Your packmates are great most of the time but annoying other times.” She told the girl frankly. Then she stuck her head back out the den entrance.

“WHAT THE HELL is going on up there!”

((Still skippable I just couldn’t resist her being crabby!
To clarify she is nowhere near the top of the cliff path near everybody else ;) Just withing hearing distance or raised voices but not eyesight))

Finni was blaming, Nanna immediately yelled. Finni ran away. ’’Finni!’’ Eyja called after her. It all happened too quickly, and Eyja didn’t know how to handle it. She decided to be to the point with Nanna, and let Finni go to rage by herself, for now.

’’Nanna, Stark is dead. He went looking for you, and drowned. He was brought back, and got buried next to the others.’’ she told her daughter, giving her a hard stare. But, there was a mild look of pity in her eyes, since Stark and Nanna had been close, and Stark had been her mentor.

And then, Natasha yelled again. Eyja gritted her teeth, keeping herself from yelling to Natasha. She felt the need to tell the female to ‘fuck off’, but she shouldn’t. She groaned softly, ears pressing back even more.

Just shut up, Natasha, you didn’t know what was going on.

Hearing Natasha butt in like this and continue even though she had been told not to bother, made Eyja realize why some wolves had problems with her.

Eyja was about to cry.

Ears pressed back against her skulls as if trying to hide from the awful news being dropped on her. It wasn’t that she thought Finni wasn’t going to tell the truth, because you couldn’t lie to a Brother (and she WAS still a Brother!), she just… said it. Because Stark could not be dead. Especially not because of her. It didn’t make sense.

A pang shot through her at hearing Finni renounce her, wanting to say something and at a total loss for what to say. She couldn’t even say anything back to Aunty Nat, voice and thoughts dried up in her throat.

Stark is dead.

She couldn’t look at momma when she said it, when she said it was because he was looking for her, when she said he was buried here. Nanna felt a cold stiffness in her spine, unwilling to look, unwilling to consider that the vague scent of death was something that belonged to him now too.

“But—” she croaked in protest despite having nothing to say.

This wasn’t what coming home was supposed to be like.

(Just a note, Finni didnt run off xD she just won’t look at Nanna)

Natasha was still screaming somewhere, Eyja was explaining to Nanna that Stark was, in fact, dead, and Finni just wanted to be done with it all.

Nanna didn’t even have it in her to say anything useful, amazing Finni with her still clearly very childish ways, arguing when there simply wasn’t an argument. Stark was dead, and that’s all there was to it. Maybe if shed have bothered to get a few lessons under her pelt before abandoning the Firewing Brotherhood, shed be a little more grown up.

A million questions writhed in her head, but anger still simmered below the surface. Finni didn’t care where her sister had been or if she was okay or even what she planned to do now. She didn’t care what big adventure Nanna had been on or any of that.

Because, of course, Finni had no sister.

The girls jaws set, glaring off in any direction that wasn’t Nannas.

Nanna looked confused, and upset, and of course Finni was upset, too. At least Natasha did not say anything else after Eyja had ignored her calls. She sighed. ’’You made us worry about you. We were worried sick. Where did you even go, why did you even go? What did you do?’’ Eyja asked. She sounded demanding, even more. She needed to know why.

’’Why did you leave us without a word, and run away a second time after you entered the Glen, and Natasha found you?’’

Why?
Was Eyja not good enough as a mother? Did Nanna not love her?

Who cared about herself! Stark had DIED? Looking for her? Because of her? She’d gotten a Brother killed?

She’d killed Stark. It sank in to the deep parts of her mind, a subconscious but certain conviction.

Sniffling up her tears, she tried to be brave beneath Finni and Momma’s accusations.

Part of her wanted to flee, but she’d only just come back. Brothers… Brothers didn’t run. Brothers were brave. And she was still a Brother. She’d be an even better... better Brother, for Stark and and…

“I wanted to show you I could do things on my own,” she said in a quiet voice, unable to look Momma in the eyes, gazing down at her paws instead. “But then… I got lost… and was gone a really long time… and I wanted to come back but then Aunty Nat saw me and I was afraid she’d tell you and you’d be angry because I-I abandoned the Brotherhood but I didn’t but what if you thought I did!”

It had been entirely illogical, but fear of judgment and creeping anxiety had a way of making someone acting illogical. She loved Aunty Nat, but Aunty Nat could also be…

Intimidating.

And now. She’d killed her mentor.

She deserved for them to be angry.

Mum was strong through it all, spitting questions at Nanna and insisting to know what had happened. Why she had gone, why shed run a second time. If Finni hadnt been so mad, she might’ve asked a question or two herself, but as it was, still wouldnt look at her former littermate.

Nanna, finally, explained. Shed wanted to do something on her own, to show them she was growing up, but had gotten lost. A dissatisfied huff burst from the yearlings nostrils as Nanna admitted shed run from Aunty Nat because she would have told and Mum would have been mad.

She absolutely had run away from the Brotherhood, and Finni had heard enough. She leveled a steeled gaze once more on the creamy female, the tears still spilling from their corners going ignored. Her voice was like ice, weeks of grief and betrayal and confusion bursting forward in a quiet hiss of words.

“Maybe you meant to come home sooner, but you didn’t. You left Mum and you left me, the pack, like we meant nothing to you. Natasha has a daughter now, and she needs fed. How do we know you won’t just leave again when you want another adventure instead of hunting for her?”

Nanna started explaining why she had left, and it was a big rambling mess of words. Wanting to be better, wanting to show she was good at things, getting lost, afraid of being judged. Oh dear, darling child.
All Eyja could do was sigh.

Finni piped up again before Eyja even found any words to spill. She listened quietly, ears flicking, and ended up looking at her paws. She guessed right now, right here, Nanna would have to decide what she was going to do with her life.

Would she be another Castor or Bree? Or would she be like Finni?
Eyja could not find her words.
