Trouble itself leaked from every orifice of the pup. Her sister had been subdued lately, sniffling and sleepy, but not so was the runt of the twinship. She had taken to scampering from the den at every possibility, lately, and today was no different. A little cackle of delight would announce her presence to any passersby, no doubt, as she scuttled to her favorite clump of bushes.

“Koenose, Ickwiss, Eeko, Eppydem, Piiiiiyo. This was a song of sorts, sung in a high-pitched little voice as she tilted her head to and fro, swishing her tiny tail (and with it, her hips) and parading through the green. Now and then she would leap the biggest puppy leap she could manage and snatch a leaf of emerald from the twigs above her, only to drop it to the ground. She had found that in time, these turned from deep green to a more muted shade, becoming crispy and crunchy, and it was always interesting to watch the process. “Piyo, Eppydem, Eeko, Ickwiss, Kooooeeenose, she sung her little tribute back the other way, utterly content as she strolled purposefully along.

The song composed of his packmates’ names could not be missed.

Spun of a childish lilt and partial syllables, Icarus’ ears perked when he first heard the voice weaving through the trees near Epidemic’s den. He hadn’t been headed there specifically, but his curiosity for the noise was undeniable. It was one of the girls, for sure.

Icarus turned his way toward it, quickly spotting the young girl, a smear of dark against the springtime greens, striding through the labyrinth with neither sister nor mother in sight.

“Hey, little lady! Where you headed?” Icarus greeted amicably as he fell into step behind her, not scolding of her solitude, but not so certain of it either. The labyrinth was a safe territory, given how often he and his packmates patrolled the borders, but it didn’t mean threats were nonexistent. Grown wolves might not be able to pass the borders, but other predators might yet.

The pup started visibly at the greeting, not having noticed the approach of Icarus due to belting out her song with her eyes squinched shut. Her little booty started to wiggle, though, and she bounced on the spot when she saw he intended to walk beside. Unlike Kronos, Icarus seemed like he was going to let her do what she wanted, at least for now. “Ickwiss!” she yipped, beaming a bright smile up at him.

He wanted to know where she was headed, and she paused thoughtfully for a moment before answering. “Labwint.” Okay, so she didn’t really know any places other than the Labyrinth yet, but she did know that it was a place, so she was doing her best, thanks very much. “You come?”

A bright smile curled on his lips as the girl yapped a malnourished rendition of his name. He had come to stand beside her, watching her little rump go a mile a minute with excitement. The answer was not particularly exciting; he couldn’t imagine she had seen much of the labyrinth in the short month of her life thus far, but that was okay. Maybe he could show her some cool spots. Maybe they’d go to the Ol’ Great Big.

“Oh hmm, let me check my schedule,” he said with exaggerated uncertainty, as if her request had put him into a quandary. Pursing his lips, Icarus leaned back and looked around, humming and hawing with every intention to give her worry that he wouldn’t, before finally fixing his eyes back on her. “Yup! I’m all yours, little lady. Lead the way!”

He was sure they could find something interesting to get into.

For a moment it seemed possible that he would refuse, and the sweetly expectant look on the pup’s face darkened to something almost disappointed. It was, after all, a singular honor to be invited on one of her adventures with her! When he leaned back, she leaned in, intensity written on her small features.

The expression vanished immediately when he beckoned her to lead, and she grinned up at him, teeny tiny teeth gleaming against the black of her muzzle. “YAY! C’mon Ickwiss, c’mon!”

She had no idea where she was going, but going she was, and with the blessing of an adult! She launched forward, tripped, but found her footing again quickly and off she shot. Her legs were far shorter than his, so no doubt he would be able to keep up, and that aside, her progress was not in a straight line, but loopy and scampery with plenty of stop-and-sniff breaks among any new bit of leaf or twig she came across. She really thought she was going places.

Icarus grinned widely and even laughed at the jovial expression of the girl after he’d accepted the invitation. He watched her carefully as she took off, flinching just slightly when she tripped - but she was hardy, it seemed. Took after her mother. Umpire quickly picked herself back up and toddled forward, weaving through the undergrowth with pointed determination to examine everything in her path.

“So where we goin’, huh?” he asked as he stepped beside her, if one or two paces behind. If there was a place she had already visited, it would give Icarus a good idea of where the girls had gone exploring so far, but if she didn’t know, Icarus had a few places in mind.

The baby peered up at the adult when he asked where they were going. Maybe she hadn’t put a lot of thought into it before, but now the effort of decision was there on her face, and she paused in her movements, calculating. Her lips pursed slightly, and eyes darted to the side, but before long a bright expression overcame the thoughtful one and she grinned at him again.

“Wainbow,” she stated, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. The rainbow was surely a place to go. Off she shot again, toward a clump of greenery still wet with dew. Sometimes when the sun filtered just enough through the twisty tree branches, she would spot the little flares of iridescence and sit for long moments admiring them.

Icarus’ tail wagged at her answer. Wainbow? Rainbow? There were rainbows in the labyrinth? This was news to him!

He smiled down at her, curious. “Oh, yeah? Where did you see a rainbow?” he asked. “Can you show me?”

He didn’t doubt that she would.

Before long, she had darted off toward a wet, dewy bush, and Icarus trotted after her until she stopped and stared. He couldn’t quite tell what she was looking at, though. “Is this the rainbow?” he asked, looking around to see if he could distinguish just what exactly the rainbow was supposed to be.

This Icarus feller, he understood things well enough she reckoned. She appreciated what she perceived as his excitement and interest in what she had to show him. No doubt she had more experience of the Labyrinth and the Rainbows of the world than did Icarus. She smiled lazily at him and nodded.

When they arrived at the bush, she hardly had a moment to find the light properly- for she had realized that rainbows were not always visible from every angle- when he piped up with another question. She cut her eyes at him, disbelief on her face. OF COURSE THE BUSH WASN’T A RAINBOW, ICARUS. She snorted, disregarding his question for the moment as she shuffled around the bush and eventually caught the telltale glimmer.

“Loooooook, Ickwiss!” Momentarily abandoning the spot where the light was catching just-so, she toddled to his legs, pressing eagerly against him in hopes of enticing him to follow her. “Look, look!” Excited, she scampered back to the dewdrops and stood with wagging tail and her nose pointed plainly.
