Maaike tracked a little further to the west when she returned to the mountains, and stood now looking out over the view at the edge of the lookout. Somewhere near here Relic had stood. A wolf she knew only by name, could build a vague image in her head based only on Atlas and maybe a little bit Bucky, the pack leaders she knew visually speaking.

But somewhere near here, he had died. Maaike didn’t question meeting the Covenant wolves when they might need a fighter on side. She had stumbled into so many difficult situations, figured them out as she went along, and so far she wasn’t dead yet. She flexed her shoulders, sighed, and turned away form the edge, heading east this time.

She could be sure only that Relic had fallen, and that she couldn’t scent another soul in the area at all, so it was unlikely anybody threw him over. At least that was something, though she suspected it would be little solace to the wolves who loved Relic in the basin.

The large yearling had ventured a bit further afield from home than he had in a long time. It felt good to be out and stretching his legs properly again. He’d never been up into mountains before, and he felt like he was on a proper adventure - even as he planned to be home before nightfall.

His eyes took in everything around him. There was so much gray rock and pine trees and short grasses up here. It was all new, all exciting. He breathed in deeply as the area started to flatten out and as he looked forward he saw the horizon with the ocean stretching out forever it seemed. He also spotted a much closer form of a wolf as well. Not a wolf he recognized either, nor could place by smell. Someone completely new to him, but no doubt meeting strangers in a new place was a welcome experience as well.

Auberon lifted his muzzle and gave a quick bark as a way of greeting to the timber woman ahead. He strode confidently forward a few more paces, still a bit out of a comfortable distance to speak with her. He brought his head up handsomely and wore a pleasantly interested expression. He felt some compelling interest to look self assured, tall, strong. He certainly was all of those things, but he wanted to look particularly like them too.

Maaike turned at the woof, and for a moment thought it was Bucky heading forwards her. Large, black and silver, distinct ocean-tinged scent. But she soon realized he was way younger, than both Bucky and even herself.

Her lips curved in a smile, amused at the set of his head and the way he almost seemed to strut towards her. But his confident body language didn’t portray anything threatening. She thought about telling him not to bother with the show, but decided against it. He wasn’t doing any harm if he wanted to show off. She wondered if he might be the first female outside his family he encountered.

“Heya. I’m Maaike.” She introduced herself once he was close enough. “You’re a Ranger, right?” Good, she could ask if Maeve arrived yet. It was going to be nice having her sister close enough to keep in constant with/ check up on.

Auberon smiled back, the friendly look spreading across his muzzle and lifting the corners of his eyes. She got right to the point and he suddenly wondered if she was a Rangers - or a guest - that he had simply missed completely before this point. He didn’t want to voice that concern just yet though.

“I’m Auberon, and yes, I’m a Ranger.” He slowed and stopped. The young man kept his head up, eyes on her, still intent on a confident, capable look. “Can I help you with anything?” He lifted his brows, ready to jump in and be the savior for a lady in distress if that was what she needed.

Auberon had a very genuine smile, Maaike decided. Though she wanted to smile again when he offered help, but it was a kind offer.

“You can actually. I’ve just been helping out the Soulfire Covenant, their leader’s gone missing and I tracked him here.” She reported. “But at least it seems like nobody else was here with him. Small consolation if he did go over the edge obviously, but worse if somebody had pushed him.” She didn’t meant that harshly or disrespectfully, but it had certainly been on her mind since her conversation with Anna.

“I was wondering if my sister Maeve arrived at your pack yet?”

Auberon brought his chin a little up at her reply, ready to help in any way he could. He listened carefully, unaware of exactly who the Soulfire Covenant was, but clearly she knew about the Rangers and was a helpful woman. He gave a little nod to her assessment that no one had pushed him - Auberon didn’t smell any other scents here either. However, he’d also never considered that a wolf might do such a thing to another. “What a terrible thing either way,” he commented, frowning at the idea.

He had to shake his head at her next question, suddenly feeling quite unhelpful in the end. “I’m afraid I’m not sure. I don’t think I’ve heard that name around the pack before. The Rangers often have a number of guests though.” So it was very possible her sister was among them and Auberon was simply unaware.

“Perhaps I could escort you down that way to check?” He lifted his expression into a small smile again, seeing if she’d accept his offer. If not, perhaps he could go check and find her again later to help her.

Maaike found herself agreeing. “Sometimes wolves do terrible things to one another though.” She stated, too quietly. Still. This time, it may have just been… singular.

Damn, Maeve was taking her time. Either that or Auberon just hadn’t met her, Maaike was familiar with large packs after her puphood.

His protectiveness was a bit much for Maaike though. “No thanks Auberon, I don’t need an escort, I’ve been there before and so has Maeve. If she hasn’t turned up, she will.” It was probably a Ranger trait - help others ingrained into them, even if they didn’t really need help. He was cute though, clearly looking for somebody to be a white knight to. Maaike, though, had long since learned to fulfill that role herself.

“Thanks though. What brings you up here anyway?”

Auberon shook his head the smallest bit as Maaike seemed to accept that things like this happened. Best not to think of it too much. Auberon was sure footed, he had no doubts he wouldn’t accidentally slip off a mountain.

He was disappointed to hear her say she didn’t need an escort. He resisted the urge to give her directions even as she said she’d already been there. He just wanted to tell her, just in case. Ladies like her shouldn’t just be out on their own like this.

At least she asked a question though and Auberon pulled his thoughts to answering rather than saying something unknowingly sexist to her. “I’ve just been exploring a bit really. My family joined the Rangers not that long ago, I haven’t gotten to see these mountains before.” He smiled charmingly, feeling brave and strong and worldly.

Aha, at least he was talking about himself now, a little more bearable than having to tend off an over-zealous teenager eager to make a name for himself, Maaike thought with amusement. “Ah, that explains a lot them. Well due east of here is a basin with a lake and some forest, I’m staying there, at least for now. Then once you cross the pass, the low point through the mountains, you can keep going east and find a lake much smaller than the massive one northeast. But there’s also hot springs, warm water close by there.” At least she could give him a heads’ up about where to explore and what to expect.

He listened with intent interest showing in the excitement in his eyes and his perked forward ears. All of it sounded interesting, thrilling really. “I shouldn’t travel that far from the pack right now.” He admitted. He’d not told anyone he was even coming up into the mountains for the day or so, he’d just gone to explore.

“Have you been to a lot of other places? All by yourself?” Some of his concern leaked into his question. One lady shouldn’t be out all on her own. His mother hardly ever left the pack’s territory without someone with her. He’d not liked when his sisters went anywhere without him or their Da. How’d this lady come to know so much but was here all alone?

Oh, okay, so he was just exploring. A pretty normal thing for young wolves to do really. But once again he seemed hung up on protecting her, if the concerned questions were anything to go by. Maaike sighed, not the most patient wolf. But he meant well, and seeing a yearling with his attitude was better than the opposite.

“When I was your age, I traveled with a group of friends. After that, with Maeve. I lived outside the valley for a year, yes, sometimes on my own. Sometimes staying with the packs I helped.”

When she sighed Auberon figured that she must agree it had been unfortunate to be out traveling like that. He tilted an ear a bit at ‘when she was his age’. How old was she anyway? He didn’t think she was that old.

He nodded along a bit at her mentions of friends and her sister, but living on her own just seemed unfortunate. Auberon was large and capable and he still didn’t want to live on his own.

“Didn’t you want to stay with any of those packs?” He didn’t get it; if she liked the wolves there enough to help, why wouldn’t she stay and have a home?

Maaike half hoped the boy would keep the optimism in him when he asked why she hadn’t stayed with the packs she had helped. She wasn’t comfortable enough to fully explain her earliest motives; if she had been going to stay anywhere it would have been the Alliance, her birth pack.

“No.” she replied, gently, for Maaike. “There’s always somebody else, y’see. I helped fix problems - coyotes, or mountain lions. Other packs making threats, pupnapping, or thieves stealing from them. All sorts of things. Then I moved on to the next pack, or person, who needed help. Right now, that’s the Covenant.”

She leaned back, and allowed him a small glimpse of the past, smiling wistfully. “My father used to say I had a wanderer’s spirit.”
