If I Could Turn Into a Fish
Morning

The summer was at its end, but it was still pretty dang hot. So Gull had woken early and headed to the ocean. She hadn’t had a proper swim since she’d been back. The sand beneath her paws felt so right, and as it started to grow wet, the energy behind her walk intensified until she was running like a wild child straight for the water with a wide grin.

It went spraying every direction, and she knew well enough to close her eyes, stop breathing for a second, and shut that wide grin. But when it settled and she could feel the waves slapping against the top of her legs, she opened her eyes and pushed forward until it was just above her chest, rocking her back and forth gently.

The smell was heaven, salt and brine reminding her so much of the home she’d been away from for far too long. This was pure bliss. She closed her eyes again and just let the waves lull her into a deep calm. If she could stay in her forever, she might just turn into a fish and swim away for a while, returning as a wolf to visit her family on occasion. No, she’d not leave them again, but it was a fun thought.

Somebody else was up early, mostly because he had been sitting in place by the shore since around midnight. The dawn rose on him there, stony-faced and unmoving, by the water’s edge. Flying fish leaped clear and birds skimmed low over the water. The tide ran out and left a wide swath of beach between himself and the waves. Then it started to come back in once more, but Ash scarcely paid it any notice.

The black and white boy thought of Relic. He thought of the leader who had put everything into a pack that one by one had all left him. Ash included. He grimaced. He couldn’t hold it in.

He finally sat back, forgetting that some of Arashi’s tribe might be still asleep. His muzzle lifted, his jaws parted, and he howled. It was perhaps, the purest note he’d ever sung in his life, and Ash put everything he had into it. All his regret about Relic dying and himself leaving him and not being capable of going back and his regret for the pack Relic had tried to build. It wasn’t a short-lived song either, keeping it up until he had no breath left in him and his head dropped, chest rising and falling rapidly.

Rest well, Relic.

Mmm, she’d missed this, the serenity of it all. The only thing that’d make her feel any better would’ve been her sisters by her side or Mom or Dad. She’d take any or all. Still, there was something to be said about quiet solitude. She’d learned to respect it once Mom had headed home and she’d carried on in the search for her father. It wasn’t that she prefer it; she’d been scared as hell for a while, but she’d pushed on and learned to appreciate it.

With the waves rolling her in and out in a deep lull, she might’ve succumbed entirely to that noticed of solitude if the foreign howl of a wolf hadn’t knocked her back to reality. It was sad sounding, almost, and close as it was, she wondered if it was a pack wolf she hadn’t met, how many wolves in the cove had heard him.

As fast a waterlogged wolf could muster, she swung around, scanning the shoreline for his white figure. It didn’t take long, and then she was trudging through sand and water to make her way to him. “You okay?” she called out from a distance, unable to make it to him quite as quickly as she’d like, considering her locale.

Ash’s head came down and for a moment he regarded the yearling who seemed about his age. He scowled faintly. Fucking brilliant, he always walked around with half his face scabbed up and his leg looking an equal mess. But she might not be close enough to see those yet, he thought, shifting uncomfortably in the sand.

For more than one reason. His keen brown eyes could already tell as she came closer to him she was pretty. Leggy, creamy-white fur, and a vibrant golden gaze. And pretty girls his age just plain made Ash uncomfortable.

He opted, perhaps surprisingly, for an honest answer. He shook his head.

It took long enough, but by the time the boy shook his head, she was within decent view of the motion, coming to a stop with an inch or two of water dancing around her paws. She studied his expression, deciding he looked rather down but unable to read much else based off once glance at a wolf she didn’t know. Did he live here?

“Do you live around here?” she asked, deciding to let him bring up what was bothering him, or at least giving him a bit until she interrogated. The scabs and artificial blemishes earn less than a moment. She’d never been a vain wolf, and she was far more concerned about why he’d howled so mournfully, anyway.

He seemed her age, too young to be sad over anything worthy of a howl

((All good with water level!))

He flinched just barely when she inspected him, wrongly assuming it was his wrecked face she was staring at, not clues to his buried emotions. She asked him if he lived here and his head tipped when he considered his answer.

He shook his head again. No, he didn’t live here. Staying, maybe, but that wasn’t the same as calling it home.

Okay, time to get the important part of their one-sided conversation out in the open. Ash tried to catch her eyes (stupid pretty golden…), then parted his jaws and shook his head at the same time.

Hmm.

It wasn’t a far reach to note the silence, the head shakes, and while Gull had never met a mute wolf proper, she could make other assumptions. Something was wrong with his throat. Maybe he sounded like a frog and didn’t want anyone to hear that.

He didn’t live here, okay, she nodded back.

When he opened his mouth and shook his head, her suspicions were confirms. Okay, okay, okay. With a slow stretch down to the water, she lied down, watching him for a moment. “Got it,” she said firmly. “Well I live here, my name’s Gull.” She left off the surname for simplicity’s sake. He ought to at least know even if he couldn’t reciprocate. “Staying here for a while or passing by?” she asked, realizing late he couldn’t shake his head at that one. “Yes for staying. No for passing.” There.

Got it, she said. Okay, she had a brain, and that meant Ash was willing to stick around, at least until she did something to inevitable annoy him. For now, he bore the questions stoicly.

Gull. Okay, what? GULL. Who named their kid that? Tribe wolves…

He nodded, yes, he was staying. For now. He doubted he was going to be able to limp anywhere else with his leg, but maybe more importantly. He trusted Arashi. He would let her heal the damn thing.

His dark, guarded gaze went back to Gull. He was pretty sure there would be more.

So he was staying! That was exciting. It was always fun to have new faces around, and he had a rather distinctive face for sure! She wasn’t certain she’d ever seen markings quite like his, but she wasn’t about to make things awkward by complimenting something small like that.

When he looked back at her, oh god, she wished he could talk. She’d never really had a one-sided conversation before, and it wasn’t that she minded but it felt selfish in a way. Like she was just probing him for answers and giving nothing back.

Ah, well.

“Well, I’m always around if you need anything,” she said, sounding almost like she was leaving though that was hardly her intention. Surely he was capable on his own, but… “Do you need anything?” She couldn’t help herself. It was the nice thing to ask, and she so so so so hoped it didn’t come across as belittling.

If only he could assure Gull that he liked it when nobody owed him anything. It made things simpler. The way Ash preferred it. He didn’t nod when Gull said she was always around if he needed anything. He couldn’t explain to her that he didn’t like company, that he preferred to be on his own, but that wasn’t the sort of thing he’d confided in people even when he could talk. Gull wanted to know if he needed anything then.

Head shake.

What was it with beach wolves? Tribe, Rangers. They were all so damn helpful. Was she leaving? He wouldn’t protest it, he’d just expected more questions than this.

In truth, she had expected that answer. Still, she wanted to help somehow, but she wouldn’t push it. Even she knew boundaries and the different kinds wolves set. While she didn’t know much about the white boy with the black markings—she’d call him Tide Pool in her head for now, since you never knew quite what you’d find in them—she had a feeling he wasn’t the type to be pushed too much.

Tide Pool was pretty good as hiding his expressions, too, which wasn’t helpful.

“I, uh…” She paddled her front paws a bit in the shallows, looking down. “Hope whatever you were howling for isn’t as sad as it sounded,” she admitted. “Was it someone you lost?” Lost being the general word, there. She only knew a few kinds of sad, and it hadn’t sounded like the others.

But who was she to judge. She didn’t know his howling spectrum. Maybe all his howls sounded like that.

((TIDE POOL!!!))

Gull was clearly a beach girl, Ash observed, the way she made herself at home in the water, front paws making tiny paddling motions. But what she said next had him withdrawing, his upper body and head pulling back a little, jaw clenching.

He looked even more tense when she asked if it was somebody he had lost.

There was perhaps a tiny dip of his chin, but the way his shoulders stiffened, his ears went back - he was making it very clear this was not a topic he wanted to talk about.

And instant guilt.

It was clear she’d struck a nerve, and man did she feel bad. Her ears swung back in half a second, eyes widening like she was scared he might storm off right there. Then what the heck was she supposed to do? Avoid Tide Pool the entire time he was visiting? The cove wasn’t that big, and she wasn’t really the type to hide off in the caverns.

Her brain was backpedaling about as fast as it could manage, but all she could think was one word.

“Sorry, sorry, sorry!” Okay one word numerous times. “I didn’t mean to pry, I just run my damn mouth sometimes.” She offered a weak grin, channeling language she’d learned from travels with her mom. Change the topic, she cursed to herself. “Are you from the valley?” Smooth. Super smooth transition, there, Gull. He was young enough that he might be. You never knew. Neutral, happy questions only, got it.

He calmed somewhat when the first response Gull made was a hasty apology, her body language even suggesting she meant it too. Ash’s ears came forwards a little, if not all the way up, and his shoulders lost their tension. Gull rambled about ‘running her mouth’ but Ash wasn’t really interested as long as she was bright enough to actually listen to him, which she seemed to be.

He nodded once for the question about being from the valley and jerked his head towards the south of the beach in a quick, rough motion.

He probably wouldn’t have gestured that way if Nomad hadn’t seen him, because surely he’d tell the Rangers that Ash was back on the beach. About the only one he cared to see was Percy, anyway.

Ah, thank god, he seemed to relax a bit at her frantic apology. The last thing she wanted was to upset him. Upset anyone, really, but he couldn’t talk and that made her feel extra committed to making sure he was comfortable here for whatever length of time he needed. She hadn’t missed the wounds. Wolves often came here to heal, which wasn’t unusual so she’d assumed that to be his case. Not something she’d bring up, considering.

Tide Pool motioned south, toward the Rangers, and she turned to look with him. “The Rangers?” she asked simply. She wasn’t familiar with any other packs in that particular direction, but if her encounter with Torbjorn had taught her anything, it was that she didn’t know much at all about the valley proper.

So he was a coastal wolf, too, presumably. She smiled to herself at that. It was nice to meet wolves natal to the coast or at least young wolves who had found their way to it. “Born down there?” she added, curious, unable to help herself, really. She wanted to answer questions for him. Maybe after this she’d just word vomit her life story or something.

Gull was smart, just young. (Not that Ash could talk). She guessed the Rangers straight away. He didn’t know why she was so interested, but he knew how important conversation was to some wolves. He nodded two small mini nods, chin dipping twice.

He didn’t know how much he was sticking around because she really was very pretty and how much he actually wanted to hear her questions, but for now at least he stayed put.

Another similar nod when she asked if he was born there. Sort of. Close enough for him.
