And just like that, Clara was alone again.

Except this wasn’t her choice. She had come back and she had made a promise to her father and to her sisters, and even to Argus. She was here to stay. And then, just like that, her family disappeared. Mom was gone. Dad was gone. She had followed Alessia’s scent as far as she could, until it was gone, too.

What…had she done so wrong to be left with a family who didn’t want her? Maybe they harbored something against her for being gone all this time. Perhaps they had left in the night without a word, distrustful of the daughter that disappeared over and over again. Revenge. They had gotten it. And Clara was left feeling sad and empty and alone.

Dragging herself far away from the husk of her home, Clara found herself in the dense Glen. Unfamiliar territory as far as she was concerned. Her previous wanderings were aimless. Like she was searching for something she would never find, doing her best to avoid the things that weren’t whatever that singular goal was. She couldn’t name another pack, she had no friends.

And now she had no family.

Zelda was still about the glens, and although she had thought about leaving once or twice, she could not bare the thought of being alone, nor did she wish to leave her new friend Seeker. Well, only friend now that Kohl had disappeared.

At the moment, the dark forest was her only home, and she supposed sticking about for a little longer wasn’t such a bad thing, plus Seeker had asked her about joining him in the brotherhood. It wasn’t a bad offer, free food, a good home and no lonliness, but she still was not sure if giving up her whole life of freedom was worth all of that.

It was only for this reason that she had held off giving Seeker any sort of answer, held off on even truly thinking it through. It was a big life twist, and she didn’t know if her mind was even ready to consider it.

It was as she walked now that she heard the steps of another, caught sight of an obviously young female. Curiousity pricked her pelt, and with a quickening of pace, she made her way closer.

Clara picked her way along the picky terrain. She either squished into the ground or nearly tripped over a rock or a root. Or sometimes she got smacked in the fact with a branch. She wasn’t paying much attention. What was the point? She didn’t know where she was going. Somewhere. Until someone stopped her. Hopefully someone would stop her. And she wouldn’t just walk off the edge of the world.

Except the idea of being followed made her whole body prickle and the moment she saw someone behind her, Clara broke into a run. She couldn’t go very fast, because she kept tripping over damn rocks and roots and getting smacked by branches, but she needed to get away because what if she died and her family came looking for her?

Zelda was nearing the female when suddenly, there was a flurry of movement and she no longer was. No, the female was making haste in escaping, and in some weird part of Zelda’s mind she saw this as a race, tail wagging happily behind her as she gave the pup a few seconds head start.

One. Two. Three.

Oh whatever!

Zelda was off, tearing towards the pup as she gave excited little yips behind her. Smile lighting her face, as her eyes glowed happily.

Oh god, she was being chased and this wolf maybe wanted to murder her? The stranger was woofing and smiling and…Did she think it was a game?

“Help!” She called out, voice cracking under the strain of running and fear grasping her windpipe.

Logic tried to help, telling her that she wasn’t about to die, and there was no reason for this. But sadness caused delusions and right now, everything else was telling her to get away. Except for that root, that root that caught her front foot just right, and nearly flipped her. Her side hit the ground with a thud and Clara yelped, skidding down a short slope towards a small ravine.

God, gods ow, that hurt.

Help? What? Why did she need help? OH! She was falling now.

What a turn of events, and she found that in all of this, she had slowed down, trotting her way closer to where the female had skidded down the slop. Peering over the slope Zelda first, made sure the girl was not dead, and second to make sure no stranger heard the call and got the wrong idea.

After making sure it was all clear. She slide her own way down, although much more gracefully than the pup. “Uh, you okay?” She inquired, a tilt to her head.

Once she had stopped sliding, Clara hissed in a cringe, body curling into itself for a moment. Tears welled in her eyes and she squeezed them shut, gritting her teeth as she shifted again, hoping she hadn’t cracked a rib. But the pain wasn’t sharp. It was dull. And though she wasn’t a medic, Clara was certain she would know if she had broken something. Because it sounded like it hurt pretty bad.

The stranger that had been chasing her was a mere foot or so away now, and Clara could no longer feel the fear that had so terribly gripped her a few moments ago. It felt silly. This wolf wanted to speak to her and she ran away. Terribly embarrassed, Clara opened her eyes, but kept them fixated on the dirt.

“Fine. Just…tripped.”

Fine? Sure you were, and Zelda was a fox. Eyebrow raising, Zelda made to come closer, sniffing from a distance as the wolf as if it would tell her anything about the injury, It was just instinct she supposed.

“You don’t look alright to me. Looks like you’re about to cry.” She responded, before casting a look behind her shoulder.

Jeremy was a healer right? He could fix this girl up just like her fixed Seeker. “You’re coming with me. I know just the wolf to help you.” She chirped, already making her way closer to the girl to offer her shoulder to lean on.

“No, not crying,” She said, blinking. There was wetness there, but Clara wasn’t a crier. It was just something strange that her eyes were doing, and after a few blinks, the wetness was gone, following the dull ache in her side. “I don’t cry.”

Clara didn’t know how to cry. Any sadness was just a empty hole, a cloud of numbness. And a fall certainly wouldn’t make her cry. Aside from whatever her body had dredged up.

Clara got nervously to her paws. The stranger was offering to help her. Ok. The kindness of a stranger. She appreciated it. With a nervous little smile, she gave a small shake of her head, refusing the offer of “shoulder”, and would follow without saying much else.

She didn’t cry apparently, but again, Zelda did not believe that in the least. Every wolf cried when pushed to their limits. It was just a way of life, but the girl was still just a pup, and Zelda would not blame her for her ignorance.

Plus, she was rising to her feet, and looked more than ready to follow, and so with a nod of her head and a wink of her eye. Zelda turned to trot towards the border she had come to know, keeping her pace slow so that the stubborn female didn’t have to try too hard to keep up.

“So where ya from?” Cause Zelda had been around the forest for a long time, and she hadn’t seen hide or tail of this female once.

Seeker had stayed out until past dark the previous night, checking the borders, investigating every last scent, on high alert for any trace of invading Union wolves. Which naturally had caused him to sleep late, curled into a tight fluffy black-and-gold furred ball. He cursed himself now at his plan to spend the day hunting, since he was off to a late start. Hopefully the cold had kept some of the prey in as well…

Speaking of scents from the border, was that one drifting down the path…?  He hastily shook his coat out, hoping he didn’t look too sleep-ruffled, wishing he had time to groom a few bits of dirt away and neaten himself up properly. Regardless, he set off for the pathway.

((Has not reached them yet!))

Clara gave a small smile as the stranger gave her a wink. Slowly, she began to feel better. Less alone. Less…bad. Her panic a now distant memory, Clara followed behind, withholding winces from her side. It wasn’t so bad, just give it time. Tata would have known what to give her, but all she could think about was peppermint.

“The…Hills.” She answered, hesistantly. There was no one left at home, so was it still really home? Was the Sanctuary vacant forever? As long as her family wasn’t there, Clara certainly would not be the one to fill its hallowed halls.

The hills? Zelda had never heard of it, but perhaps if she ended up not staying here, she would go to check it out. Looking down towards the child, she figured she was a bit young to be away from home, but then again Zelda had no room to judge,

Every wolf had their reasons, and it was by no right of hers to say if those reasons were wrong or right. Nodding her head, Zelda’s tail continued it’s casual swish behind her. “Well, I’ve never been there before, but I might check it out some day, for now though I’ll stick to these forests.” She replied easily, still making her way towards the border she had scented on so many occasions.

Voices; two, one familiar and one not, matching the scents. Seeker broke into a lope to traverse the remainder of the distance. He soon spotted Zelda with a kid about Nat, Stark and Clint’s age. She seemed to be moving stiffly, and the yearling tilted his head as he slowed to a trot.

“Hey, Zee.” He called out, without much volume, because the girl looked nervous. “Who you got there?” He tried some variant of reassuring smile at the girl, which felt like the first time he’d had any reason to smile since learning Jeremy was dead.

“It’s not that exciting. Just hills. No one really lives out there.” Clara’s brows came together at this, however. The Hills spanned miles. How could this wolf avoid them? Perhaps she had been there and just didn’t know, because no one lived there to tell her. That was probably it. It took too much energy to be confused, though and she turned her attention to this other new wolf, who called the stranger at her side, Zee. What a funny name. Not pretty like, Clara. Just funny.

Not that she felt very pretty right now.

“You can ask me,” Clara said, frowning. She wasn’t a child. “I’m Clara. I fell. I’m fine. But…Zee said you could check.” Despite her grumpiness, she was feeling better. Perhaps that was what let her be grumpy.

They hadn’t even fully reached the border when he appeared, the best friend Zelda could ever ask for, Seeker! Tail picking up its pace, Zelda ran towards the male, giving him a happy nuzzle as she moved back to answer the questions that had been asked.

Only the girl answered before she could, Clara saying that she could speak for herself, which was most definitely true. “I was hoping Jeremy could take a look at her and heal her like he did you.” She chirped, eager to see the friend she had only met once before.
