No sign of her. Nothing. The search had been fruitless. Very very fruitless. Her scent had been nowhere, nowhere at all. She was probably not even in the valley anymore, if she was even still alive. But if she was still alive, then why would she have left and stayed away? Did she not love Brynn anymore? Had the kids become too much for her? Had she found someone else? No, she would never cheat on him, would she? But still…

Brynn could not help but worry. He felt terrible. He couldn’t stop thinking about her. And as he came home, things only got more troubling. The scents of all his pups had faded, as well. Where had Junior and Faithful gone off to? Was Albus still not back home? Why did he go? Courage’s scent was the strongest of all, but it too seemed to be fading. The boy had gone out recently. And not returned yet?

Brynn… snapped. Everyone was leaving him. His mate, his pups. His siblings too. No one ever came back. They all left and no one ever came back! Brynn just… he needed help. He needed someone. Just someone, to tell him everything would be alright. But would it ever be alright again? The wolf he loved was gone, the wolf he had wanted to stay with, for the rest of his life. His pups, all fading, all going their own ways. Not even a year old yet.

He had failed his mate, failed his children. There was no way he could redeem himself. Brynn was a poor excuse of a father, he had been from the start. He should have known, from the moment he set eyes on his newborn pups… the way he felt, back then. He did not feel happy, did not feel proud. He felt scared, and useless. He had been scared, to see his own pups. No happiness. Just a sadness deep down. And he had overcome that sadness, but now… now it was returning, with all these latest events, so much was happening.

And Brynn could not cope.
He could not cope anymore.

He could not.

Eyes fell on the water, the lake. He remembered Lynett, then, and how he tried to teach her how to swim. He wondered where she had gone off to. She had never come back again. Not after that moment he saved her. She had sunk to the bottom of the lake, and Brynn had done his best to pull her up. He had managed. But had it been worth it? Saving that wolf, only to never see her again?

Who knew, maybe she had come back and gone swimming alone and ended up on the bottom, anyway. Maybe Brynn should end up on the bottom.
Maybe Calamity was on the bottom.

Maybe Brynn should go to the bottom.

He did not think anymore at that point. He just walked, moving forward. Stepping into the water. And he did not stop. His legs went under, the water reached up to his belly, to his chest, to his throat, to his muzzle. Muzzle went under, head went under. And Brynn went under.

And he let himself sink. Moving further into the deep. He let himself sink.

His whole family was falling apart and hs mate was gone and his pups were gone and he was a terrible father and everyone was better off without him.

He let himself sink.

Swallowed up by the deep.

Well it was fucking time she made it back.

Ryd truthfully had kept to the borders of the territory (and of course, the hills) but she was pretty dang wiped. Time for a goddamned nap, and also maybe a freaking meal. Like most wolves, she could go days without one if she gorged, and it had been days, and gorging time was approximately now.

Right. Drink of water, maybe staking out her old sleeping spot on the island. Sure.

She sniffed around, making sure all scents were Cadre scents, at least those she could recognize.

Though… there was one she hadn’t met, that had a fresh trail. And an actually vaguely familiar scent.

It had to be Brynn, because Pierre hadn’t known any of the other names that she’d tossed his way. And it was a male scent, so it couldn’t be Fluffy. Er, his mom. With the terrible name.

Movement and the gentle slosh of water up ahead called her attention forward, and Ryd’s ears cupped as she looked ahead.

Uh. What the heck was that. Looked like some giant… round… fish. Or something. She didn’t realize it was the back of a wolf going under.

“Whoa!” she shouted, staving off exhaustion to bound over to the bank into just over shoulder-length water in an attempt to bite it before it sank completely.

Because maybe it was food.

Brynn was holding his breath. He knew he could die faster if he breathed in the water, but he was scared. He was scared for whatever reason. He did not know whether he was scare of dying, or the feeling of dying, or the feeling of water entering his lungs, and all the coughing that would follow. So he kept holding his breath.

He would probably die, anyway. If it wasn’t from actual drowning, then he would die from suffocation. His lungs had started to hurt; it felt like they were about to explode. And then, his mouth opened. Brynn could no longer hold his breath, and he sucked in water, purely in reflex, for his body to safe itself. But there was no oxygen, and immediately his body jolted and struggled.

It was scary.
No, it was terrifying.

But it would be over soon, he believed it would. And then he could finally rest, in peace.

But suddenly something grabbed him by the scruff, and Brynn let out a yelp, but muffled by the water. It sounded like nothing. His body struggled against the grip. His body jolted. Blackness was creeping in around the corners of his view, creeping in and taking over his whole vision. It was going black, and Brynn was terrified.

Was this what dying was like?

Was he really dying?

He felt his strength fading. First slowly. But now that he had sucked in air.

Very fast.

But with the pull on his scruff, his head went up and came above the water. And suddenly, his body was making him gasp for air. But lungs were filled with water, and he made a loud gurgling sound.

He couldn’t really imagine the pain Brynn was going through. He didn’t really try, either. It wasn’t just style. Anytime he had the option to be sympathetic, it was usually toward his captured prey. And he refused to show sympathy there. But Brynn wasn’t prey. He was a friend.

At any rate, Zak figured it best to give the wolf space. It’s what Zak would want if he were in Brynn’s position.

Zak caught the scent of a female he hadn’t met. Feeling rather bored, he decided to try and meet her. He hadn’t banged in forever, which was initially one of his first goals in leaving his home ages ago.

Having nothing to lose, he figured now was the time. He really didn’t care about his public image or what others thought about him in general.

He chose to follow her scent. On his way there, he heard an exclamation. He couldn’t pin it as a distress call or anything like that. He didn’t see anything either, except for the female he smelled..and Brynn. She was looking into the water for whatever reason. And then she shoved her face into it frantically. Fish? Food? Hell yes.

But it wasn’t fish. And Zak realized that very fast. It was Brynn. Zak knew exactly what was going on.

“I’ll be damned.”

That’s all he could say. He rushed over to help the woman pull him out. Hopefully they weren’t too late.

(allowed to assume Brynn’s head came up when she grabbed him)

Whoa, okay. First of all. That was a wolf. What. The fuck.

There was splashing behind her, and she could not quite let go to see what it was. Right now a wolf was being a real dumb fucknut, walking into the lake. Or maybe just trying to fish? But like? Fishing didn’t involve slowly walking in and sending all the fish scattering? So?

Ryd growled and yanked her head backwards, pulling with all the strength she had in her small body.

Get this wolf on land, and then ask him what the fuck he was doing. She didn’t even connect the Brynn dots yet, she was so infuriated.

All she’d wanted it to be was like. Food. Ugh.

Brynn got slowly pulled out of the water, and his vision returned, but it was blurry. He coughed, he coughed so much and so loud. He had never coughed this much in his life. His lungs hurt so bad, and he wanted to struggle free but his limbs were too weak to do anything. He was just dragged and tugged around like a sack of potatoes. Limp.

His lungs hurt so bad. The coughing made him light headed. It felt like he was about to pass out. Water left his lungs, a nasty gurgling sound. It continued.

He couldn’t find anywhere to grab Brynn. The female seemed to be pulling him out just fine on her own.

Brynn was coughing uncontrollably. Zak assumed he had inhaled water and probably still had some in his lungs.

“Sh-shit, whatta we do? We gotta get it outta him.”

Zak’s heart was racing. He legitimately liked Brynn. He didn’t want him to die.

She dropped him, every muscle tense as the male set to hacking and coughing. But that meant he was alive. She took only one small step back, only so she could watch him.

“He’s getting it out!” she snapped to the unknown male, not needing another panicking right now. They couldn’t crowd him. He needed to cough it out of his insides.

“That’s good, Junior. Keep coughing it out. You’re doing good,” she encouraged, one paw comfortingly on his back but not pushing. He had this. He had to have had this. Her mind was racing. She’d said his name without even realizing it. Junior, they’d called him. Brynn.

What the fuck, Brynn. She kept that question in her for now, but it desperately wanted to find its way from her.

Voices, muffled, visions, blurred. Darkness creeping in on the edges again. With every cough it felt like he was about to rip his lungs from his body and cough them up. Every cough felt like something was about to tear. His legs twitched, as if he was dreaming, and running in his dream. But Brynn was not dream. He was wide awake, yet he didn’t feel awake. It felt like he was drifting somewhere. In the sky. But every cough made his body jolt, and it brought him back to a painful reality, for a second or more.

Junior, he heard. Junior? But Junior wasn’t here, was he? Had Junior come back? Had all his pups come back? He coughed more, and tears welled up on his eyes. Brynn began to cry. And through gasps, he whispered. ’‘Junior…?’‘

Where was his son? He could not see him.

Something about the way the female snapped at him made him calm down. He couldn’t pin down the reason, though.

Zak inched closer to Brynn, not really paying attention to the female’s use of Junior’s name. The wolf hacked furiously, which was good.

This is a crappy post! I can’t think at all right now…

He spoke. He could speak. Which meant he could breathe.

He would be okay. He had to be.

Ryd took an inhale as the fury rose up in her now that she knew he had to be okay. “What the fuck, Brynn,” she let out, finally. “I get back and you’re trying to fucking drown?!”

Suddenly, there was yelling, lots of yelling. Brynn’s ears pressed back and he whimpered, coughing some more. He felt himself fall in and out of consciousness. His vision blackened and lightened back up and his whole body jolted and shook and hurt.

’‘Hnnnnf…’‘ was all he could manage, as another coughing fit threatened to arise. He held his breath, and groaned, pressing his eyes closed firmly. But holding his breathe did not help him at all, and he only ended up coughing more.

This fucking hurt!

Why didn’t they just let him die!?

She spoke almost exactly what Zak was thinking..but he wasn’t about to say it. Not yet, anyway. That was ruthless even for himself.

But now that it had been said, whatever. Even if Brynn couldn’t do anymore than moan in agony. He needed to know how dumb he was being.

“You still got kids. Fuck, man. What were you thinking?!”

Wow, he hadn’t been this angry in a while. It all just came on him so fast.

He’d said Junior before, but then had set back to coughing and groaning. She sort of wanted to shake him.

The dude joined in, and clearly they knew each other. She sat, glaring, waiting for Brynn to explain himself.

Brynn’s gagging and coughing was slowing, but it was still there. God, how he wished they had just let him go. Zak mentioned kids, and as the seconds passed, Brynn seemed to become more aware of his surroundings. He almost wanted to laugh at it, because it was an awful joke.

’‘Don’t you – cough – smell the scents…? They’re all – cough – gone…’‘ Brynn said, sad. Eyes stared at the water. He wanted to go back in there. ’‘Calamity… gone. Pups… gone. All gone…’‘

Brynn wanted to be gone, too.
He had nothing left to live for, really. Calamity had been his everything, and he could not even care for his kids good enough to have them stay. They all left. He was a terrible excuse of a father, and he just wanted to die.

Zak noticed their scents weren’t around as wel. Still, he thought. That’s no excuse—not even close—for Brynn to kill himself. Zak wouldn’t tell him that, though. No, wait. He would. But If the wolf wanted to be a dumbass, Zak wouldn’t stop him again.

“So that’s it? You don’t think they’ll come back, any of ‘em? What if they do and you’re dead? Oh that’d be a fun day. Jeez, Brynn.”
