It had been an utterly beautiful night to travel, the stars brilliant overhead without a single cloud in the sky. Yuna was still a little surprised Tidus had been so eager to travel at night, but she had also been determined to keep him happy and positive, and a visit to the Evergreens might do just that. She hoped. It was strange for her to be this far inland, too, but it was only for a little while, and she’d be back at her beloved beach soon enough.

She and Tidus had come over the hills, neither of them keen on going anywhere near Firefly Woods. They’d stopped for a nap in the grassy hillsides, though Yuna hadn’t slept much, alternately leaning her chin on Tidus’s shoulders and grooming his ears as he slept. The whole time, Yuna had been gazing with rapt attention at the starry sky overhead. It was so blazingly clear, she felt like the stars were telling her the visit to the Evergreens was the right move to make.

Yuna though, was just happy to be anywhere with her mate.

“The borders aren’t far from here.” She told him, moving her head as they walked to give him a little shoulder nuzzle. “In a way I’m almost sorry to get here and for the journey itself to be over - I had fun traveling with you tonight.” She told him shyly.

Tidus had been quiet for a while after the nap, eyes closed. Hey, let the man be tired. He’d had a long day yesterday.

Mmm…mhm ” He yawned.

I had fun traveling with you ” He said, leaning over to nuzzle Yuna in return. He looked to the forest around him, some unease spiraling through him.

This looked like his parent’s place. But it wasnt, ya know? Just kinda…looked like it.

She let her step slow, leaning towards him for a moment, a soft sigh of happiness escaping her at his nuzzle back. She did enjoy travel - the seeing new places, even if some of the faces made her nervous. Not so much this trip though. Rufus and Mari were two of the kindest wolves she had ever met. She decided to make the most of this while she could, maybe be brave and sniff around the forest here while she still could. She’d still be mobile enough during the earlier stages of pregnancy, but trips would be a lot harder towards the end.

Given how embarrassed Tidus had gotten the last time she brought up mating though, she kept the thought to herself.

“Do you think you could sniff out a rabbit…?” She asked him hopefully. “I’ll even try to help you catch one. I’d love to take something to Rufus and Mari. They wouldn’t let me leave without something to eat after Rufus got me out of that puddle.” She very deliberately referred to the rising mudbath that could have drowned her as a puddle. No need to get Tidus all anxious.

(skippable for the time being!)

Shark knew well enough not to go too far outside of the Caverns. This wasn’t her home and it certainly wasn’t familiar to her. The trees that hid the sky from her made the girl feel a bit claustrophobic, or maybe like a giant sea bird was going to swoop down from one of the branches and just attack her. Maybe birds were bigger in the forest. Maybe they could carry her away!

Rather than be terrified, Shark was almost kind of excited about the idea of maybe being carried off by a giant bird. Regardless, she knew better than to stray too far and get eaten by something, so Shark lingered outside of the entrance, watching the rays of fresh sun start to peek through the trees.

Tidus nodded slowly.

I could certainly try ” He said, a soft sleepy murmur leaving him. He shook himself, huffed briefly, before putting his nose to the ground.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Inhale dirt.

Sneezing fit.

“Careful, my sunshine!” She tried not to laugh, giving him a little poke aimed at his rump as he drew slightly ahead of her. “You can do it!” She encouraged.

Yuna was actually almost as good at picking up scents as he was, she was just more practiced with herbs than prey, and it was her nature to let him take the lead in most situations.

Tidus nodded, before lowering his head once again. A deep inhale, and he found a scent. He moved out, nose to the ground sniffing like a maniac.

Found a scent! ” He whispered back to Yuna

“I knew you would.” She whispered back and beamed, and moved into stalking mode. She was light on her paws, but she didn’t have a lot of practice moving through forested environments and she knew it, so she took her time, careful not to make any noise. She didn’t want to ruin any hunts of her mate’s

“Let me know when you see them. I’ll go around the other way to you.” She offered, still whispering, meaning to do her best to try and help him hunt. She couldn’t say she felt any more confident after her rabbit-hunting practice with Kamaal… but she had to try.

Tidus made sure the padding of his paws was silent, slow. Easy to sneak up on rabbits when they couldn’t hear you.

He kept his nose to the ground, tail waving like a flag to be followed.

Yuna moved, still a bit more slowly, after him, her nose down as well. She wasn’t tracking, leaving that to her mate’s greater experience, but she was looking for any twigs that might snap if she accidentally trod on them, and she made pretty good, very quiet progress just behind the waving end of Tidus’s tail.

Tidus suddenly stopped, lifting his head, ears flicking madly. His eyes narrowed, tail swishing behind him, before his nose dropped to the ground again.

A minor bump.

Yuna carefully looked Tidus over first, checking he hadn’t hurt himself. Second nature, by this point. Then, hopeful she might spot a rabbit she crept up behind him and sloooooowly poked her head around him, keeping ery low. She was still certain that her pale fur was what had alerted the rabbits she hunted with Kamaal. If he’d seen some, she didn’t want to ruin his hunt as well.

Tidus slunk down as the scent got fresher, ears pinned against his head. Different scents intermixed themselves under his nose, but mainly, different rabbits. All in one place.

Jackpot.

She was too tense to speak anything out loud. And so Yuna nudged her mate gently with her head, indicating that was the direction she would go in. She set off, moving at a slow crawl through the undergrowth, hyper-aware of each occasion she set her paw to the loam.

This was… actually fun, even though concentrating so intently gave her a tiny headache. It reminded her of traveling with Tidus before the valley, and for a bit just after they arrived. She had always been happy with him, and she smiled a little at the memories. Slowly, slowly, she made her way around the rabbits, she could smell so clearly now, but she stopped before she made it too far. She didn’t want to wind to blow from her to the rabbits and alert them he was there - something Tidus had taught her on one of their hunting lessons from months ago, back when she’d barely tasted red meat for all the fish she subsided on.

Tidus nodded, peering through the brush at the rabbits. They didn’t appear alarmed. Alert, as they always were, but hey. They were rabbits.

And Tidus was going to drive them like cattle. He readied himself to charge forwards, to drive them towards Yuna.

And he did, bursting from the brush snarling like a madman. The rabbits startled and scattered, one or two taking off towards Yuna.

Tidus went after a few more. Yuna could handle herself.

It wasn’t the first time they had hunted in such tandem, but it had been a while - Yuna liked spoiling Tidus catching him fish. For a split second she was frozen as three rabbits came towards her. Then she rememebred herself. She was hunting with her mate, for their friends, and both were relying on her.

She leaped forward from her cover to meet the rabbits. One was bowled over by the cream female’s charge and lay dazed behind her, but she had her eye on the biggest of the trio, a fat doe. Her jaws snapped, and much to her surprise she came up with a limp rabbit between then. Her odd eyes widened with joy and surprise as she turned to see how Tidus had fared.
