Last night had been so unbearably freakin’ cold, Senna had just kept walking. There was nowhere safe to lay down anyway; the dirt was too frozen to scratch out a nest and for the last day or so, her surroundings had been bare of any landform that might provide decent shelter. Senna was a fan of her eight (or ten, or more..) hours of beauty sleep and was not accustomed to going without, so there was a bit of a wobble in her trajectory as she pushed westward beneath the early rays of dawn. Maybe once the sun had warmed the crusty, frozen ground beneath her paws she would find a place to curl up, but she would hardly rest easy so exposed.
The girl squinted her apple eyes at a glimmer in the distance, unsure of whether to believe her vision or chalk up the sight to hunger and weariness. Before she quite knew what was happening, her paws were flying over the hardened earth, slowing only when she reached (what she had hoped was) the mighty river, teeming with edible wildlife. In reality, it was merely a wisp of a creek, frozen as hard as the rest of the desert surroundings. Senna emitted a barking growl of frustration, rearing and then stamping her forepaws on the ice impetuously. They promptly slipped from beneath her and Senna’s chin smacked onto the ice with a hard thud. She groaned, partly in pain bust mostly in annoyance at her own stupidity. Still laying halfway on the ice, she rolled onto her side dramatically, wondering if she might die here in this frozen-over hellhole.
