Last night had been so unbearably freakin’ cold, Senna had just kept walking. There was nowhere safe to lay down anyway; the dirt was too frozen to scratch out a nest and for the last day or so, her surroundings had been bare of any landform that might provide decent shelter. Senna was a fan of her eight (or ten, or more..) hours of beauty sleep and was not accustomed to going without, so there was a bit of a wobble in her trajectory as she pushed westward beneath the early rays of dawn.  Maybe once the sun had warmed the crusty, frozen ground beneath her paws she would find a place to curl up, but she would hardly rest easy so exposed.

The girl squinted her apple eyes at a glimmer in the distance, unsure of whether to believe her vision or chalk up the sight to hunger and weariness. Before she quite knew what was happening, her paws were flying over the hardened earth, slowing only when she reached (what she had hoped was) the mighty river, teeming with edible wildlife. In reality, it was merely a wisp of a creek, frozen as hard as the rest of the desert surroundings. Senna emitted a barking growl of frustration, rearing and then stamping her forepaws on the ice impetuously. They promptly slipped from beneath her and Senna’s chin smacked onto the ice with a hard thud. She groaned, partly in pain bust mostly in annoyance at her own stupidity.  Still laying halfway on the ice, she rolled onto her side dramatically, wondering if she might die here in this frozen-over hellhole.

Eden had been wobbling between heading into the desert or more south toward the mountains. In fairness, she sort of hated both, but she’d been winding with the river to keep her shoulder cleaned as best she could manage and had ended up back in the wastelands.

She was moody, but that was nothing terribly new.

She’d been winding along, not looking for anything in particular when she spotted the white girl face-planted on a shallow stretch of the river. Fucking idiot. She had half a mind to turn right back around but out of boredom and against her better judgment she closed the distance more.

“You trying to drown in ice?” she called out, tone flat despite the glower in her expression. Kids. Why were there so many kids everywhere, always. She’d been doing so well avoiding them for a while.

That was just perfect, wasn’t it? The first wolf to appear since Senna had found herself in this godforsaken desert had shown up just in time to add insult to injury. She cracked one apple-green eye open to see who was here to kick her while she was down.

A large, dark pelted woman frowned down at the girl prostrate across the ice. Senna knew she must look like a damn fool, and although she probably deserved derisive sarcasm, the stranger’s tone was oddly flat. As if this was her usual way of greeting someone.

Senna, in turn, responded in her usual way, with undaunted cheerfulness.

“Ah, well, it’s not working like I hoped…” she called back, grin tugging at the corners of her mouth.  ”...Maybe you know a better place I could drown?”  She rolled to her belly, blinking a few times as her vision reoriented. Wow, she was dizzy. She should eat soon. But water was most important in this moment, so her ears pressed forward to catch the stranger’s response.

Eden tilted her head at the oddity of the girl’s response. A wolf looking to drown in the desert was about the stupidest thing she’d ever heard and she nearly scoffed for it, resorting to a judgmental glower instead.

“Probably somewhere not in a desert,” she responded, as if that wasn’t the obvious answer. “Plenty of lake and ocean in the valley with room to spare for corpses, though.” Hell, she’d help the girl find her grave somewheres if she was seriously up to it. Was a hell of a lot more interesting than watching some wolf try to scratch open ice.

But she was no tour guide. She’d come out here for…well she wasn’t really sure, but it wasn’t to make friends with some kid. One thing at a time.

“Probably somewhere not in a desert,” was the woman’s quick response, and the irony was not lost on Senna. With a delirious sort of chuckle, she pushed herself to a standing position, trying to ignore the sharp hunger pangs in her stomach as she stretched.

“Yeah,” she agreed, “I’ve been looking for a place just like that.” Yes, not in a desert perfectly described the exact place she wished to be right now. The woman added more information, something about a valley with oceans and lakes. Senna’s eyes widened with interest, and she stepped toward the stranger.

“A lake would be perfect.  In… a valley, you said?”  Her tail wagged hopefully, She would almost prefer drowning to her current state, her mouth dry as sand and stomach an empty, aching pit.

It was a typical answer for a typical wolf in the desert. Looking for somewhere not desert, when Eden desired much the opposite or close enough. It wasn’t all so bad out here when she was alone to herself. The company was the problem.

“What’d you think? That this was some never-ending wasteland?” she returned, as if the girl hadn’t thought to turn around back where she’d come from instead of trekking and trekking and trekking into nothingness.

“How’d you end up here anyway?” Girl was young. Not much older than Eden had been when she’d returned to the valley, so she wasn’t one to judge. But even she hadn’t been quite so…cheery. She wasn’t quite sure the adjective for this girl.

Now that she was right-side up, Senna attempted to get a better look at her newfound companion. She was difficult to see in the predawn light; the most that the girl could make out was that the woman seemed young… a year older than herself, perhaps, give or take.  There was something odd going on with her eyes, too.. scarring? No… it was too symmetrical for that.  It looked more like… markings. Almost like a raccoon’s. Interesting. This was not a woman Senna was likely too forget.

“No, I guess not…” Senna replied, eyes drifting downward as she scratched at the ground with a forepaw. This woman seemed determined to make her feel like an idiot. Or at least, more so than she usually felt like an idiot, which was often. “..I just wasn’t sure that the other side would be any better than the side I came from.” She glanced up with a questioning expression. She was definitely interested in hearing more about this valley.

“There just.. wasn’t anywhere else to go,” she answered with a shrug, knowing her answer was a little lame. Really though, she couldn’t stay where she had come from, and as a traveler she was encouraged (often aggressively so) by the loners and pack wolves she encountered to keep moving.  Winter was here, and no one wanted and extra mouth hanging around their hunting grounds.

Eden had been a little ways on the other side of the wasteland on her one trip out. It hadn’t been the lush welcome of the valley but it hadn’t been quite so awful as this place had seemed back then. Why anyone would choose to trek through it without thought of turning back around, without knowing what lay on the other side… She shook her head. Her parents had pushed through knowing nothing, but they’d had reasons. This wolf? She seemed lost at best.

“Where’d you come from?” she asked flatly, tone unwavering. It was a question she actually was curious to hear answered. She’d done some wandering in her time, but knowing more about what was beyond her natal valley would only serve to potentially help her in future—if she ever needed that.

Surely there had been other places to go, but rather than playing her usual role of a pushy bitch, she let that one slide for now, giving the girl room to answer in full. Hoping the silence would encourage her to go into story mode rather than vague answers because she was bored. Might as well learn something out of the trip out here.

Senna’s vague hints at her desire to learn more about the valley were getting her nowhere. Clearly the woman was in this conversation for her benefit only, and Senna would have to give her what she wanted if she was going to have a chance at finding out more about what lay beyond this wasteland. The stranger asked again about her origins, obviously not appeased by her vague replies so far. Odd. Most wolves were decidedly uninterested in a lone brat’s story… but if that was what she wanted, she could have it.

“East of this desert. A moon’s journey, and on until you reach the mountain range that scrapes the sky.  My home is—was—in those foothills.”  The girl swallowed. She wasn’t yet accustomed to speaking of Eiriol Pass as her former home.

“It’s called Eiriol Pass, if you make it there. You can tell them you ran into Senna Selwyn…” Perhaps someone back home would be interested in hearing she was still alive. Would they even remember her? Some of their faces were already fuzzy in Senna’s memory.

”...But I wouldn’t suggest going there. They can’t even feed their own.” Senna’s nose wrinkled in a funny expression. Speaking ill of Eiriol Pass left a sour taste in her mouth, try as she might to remind herself that it was no longer her home.

Thinking of the place she left and how far she had come turned Senna’s sluggish thoughts toward this stranger’s trajectory. Perhaps if she hadn’t been so hungry and exhausted, she would have wondered it sooner. Senna knew where she hersefl had come from, and why, but this stranger was traveling through the desert from the opposite direction it seemed. What would drive her to leave the oceans and lakes of the valley for… this?

“So, what was so bad about the valley, then? Why’d ya leave?” Senna’s question was based on the assumption that the woman had left the valley for good. In her mind, there was only one reason that a wolf would venture into this wasteland, and that was to get across it. Who would ever take a daytrip into such a hellhole?

Eden listened with rare intensity to the story. She’d never heard of much outside the valley beyond the few wolves who’d shared stories long forgotten. It was likely she’d forget the details of this one as well, but unrest had her longing for entertainment, even if it was at the behest of this stranger’s life story. A story was a story, and at least she didn’t feel so on edge at the moment.

Eiriol Pass, Senna Selwyn. All names she’d likely lose to the wind but ones she added to her list anyway. It was unlikely she’d ever travel that way but information all the same. Sounded like they were a dying breed anyhow, which explained much of her situation. At least she’d been sharp enough to recognize that much.

But she wanted information about the valley, and Eden turned a shoulder back. It’d been fun fucking with the last traveling rogue. Why not give it another go. So she let her expression slouch a bit with her posture.

“War,” she began at the start, looking torn over it. “Too many packs and too much conflict. So much so that it was affecting even the life of a wandering rogue. Hadta get out for a bit, clear my head.” There was the implication she’d be headed back in, perhaps, but her tone was somber.

Senna was buying it hook, line and sinker.

“Wow.” Her eyes grew even wider, if that was even possible. She lowered her tail in respect for the woman, who she was now assuming was some sort of battle-hardened mercenary.  Now that the sun was higher, she could see the woman’s torn ear. This only added support to Senna’s conclusions.

To such a young wolf, who had seen nothing but sand and ice for the last moon, the idea of war was compelling… the drama! The excitement! Senna’s tail started switching back and forth in her enthusiasm. “Do you know any heroes?” She took a few more steps toward the woman. “Or villains?” she added quickly.  All she knew of war was what was told in puppy bedtime stories, and in the stories there were always heroes and villains. Maybe this stranger was one herself. Senna was practically salivating.

Oh god.

The fact that this was a kid she was talking to only was made evidently clear in her question. She wasn’t scared by the concept. It was like she wanted some fairytale story about whatever the hell fairytales were made of. Eden shrugged.

“Nope,” she admitted, shrugging. “Only dead wolves. Blood and too many dead wolves.” Sure something like that. She glanced off for dramatic effect.

Surely the girl wasn’t buying this, but she’d play it out as long as she could manage. “Right now, doesn’t matter if you’re on a side or not. You’re in the way, blood, another body to the count.” So watch your back, she might have added, but even in her lies, she didn’t care enough to concern herself over someone else’s well-being.

The woman’s answer and blase attitude only upped her cool factor in Senna’s eyes.  She was still a child, still invincible, so talk of blood and death intrigued her far more than it frightened her. It seemed all this woman did was talk of death.

“Wow,” she said again, too disoriented to come up with a more original response. Perhaps if she were thinking straight, she would have been more cautious about charging into a war-torn valley. However, all she could think about at the moment was how well she would eat if she enlisted. Look how large and healthy this mercenary was, after all!

After pondering the woman’s words for a moment, she spoke again with a heavy sigh—
the kind that often serves to wrap up a conversation. “Seems like, if I don’t get going soon, there won’t be any room left in the lake for my corpse.” Another delirious chuckle. “That’s the way?” she asked with a brow raised, tilting her head westward.

How dull.

This hadn’t been the reaction she’d been after, not really. Some part of her had hoped the girl would run back the way she’d come, tail tucked and afraid, but she had to give it to her. Kid seemed fearless. Or stupid. She wasn’t really sure where the lines blurred there.

“Follow the river that way,” she said at the end, nosing the direction into the valley. “You’ll hit the grass eventually.” Or what was left of it with winter in their midst. It was still evident enough where wasteland ended and the valley began, though, so she left it at that, shuffling slightly to let the girl walk past her and into war.

Or something like that. Winter was its own kind of battle. For females, at any rate.

And just like that; for the price of her incredibly uninteresting backstory, Senna had all the information she needed and more. “Thanks!” she said with a broad smile, grateful and more than a little surprised that the woman had given her such a straightforward answer, just like that. Getting help from strangers was usually like pulling teeth.

She started forward, but something made her pause. “Umm.. What had she forgotten? Her thoughts were swimming. “Ah, really.. just, thank you, Miss…” Oh right, she still didn’t know her new friend’s name. She paused long enough for the stranger to give her name if she desired. However, it would not shock her if the rogue remained silent. With names came reputations, and many times lone wolves chose to keep both to themselves.

“Eden,” she returned simply enough, no long burdened by the need to hide herself. She’d be on the move from here soon enough anyway.

She gave a curt nod, sort of irritated with how…amicable this had all been, more or less, but content in knowing that perhaps the girl would enter the valley with entirely off base expectations. So there was that.

For her part, she remained in place, turned to watch the girl leave but otherwise unmoving. Maybe she’d stretch out for a bit and just relax, let her paws and chest cool on the ice.
