Makki was trying to hunt. Kinda dumb honestly, he didn’t think he could catch anything in the deep snow. He had to jump to move in some places. And, he didn’t think he could fish. The lake water would be freezing. He didn’t want to get sick. Besides, there had to be nothing out in this weather. Sure, the sun was out, but…

Makki sighed, sitting down beside a tree. He felt bad, as he still hadn’t met many of the Cadre’s members. He wanted to, but there was just something preventing him from approaching a stranger out of nowhere. Oh well, maybe Ryd can help me out again, he thought, before thinking about how busy she was. Maybe not then…

Thinking back to the problem at hand, he realised hadn’t gotten a lot of training done when he was with his family. Probably why he sucked so much at hunting, but maybe he could outrun a rabbit or something. Maybe. He hoped at least.

WELL MAKKI, LOOK WHO WAS COMING ANYWAY.

IT WAS RYD. SURPRISE.

“HEy!” she called in the distance as she approached a white speck by a tree from where she’d ended her patrol. It was either Makki or Rab or Faith, probably, and she was about ready for any company at all.

Ryd wasn’t about to let winter hush this pack, okay?

Ears pricking, Makki turned his head towards the yell. Oh, it was Ryd! He thought she must have been on a patrol or something, but here she was!

He felt his mouth rise in a grin, happy to see his friend. “Hi, Ryd!” Makki called, still frustratingly quiet for a yell, though. He got to his feet, and wagged his tail a couple of times.

Yup, so that wasn’t a female voice and it certainly wasn’t ol’ Rab. Makki it was, and she felt her chest get all fuzzy that he was out here and not hiding away.

“Hiya!” she chirped, tail waving gladly. Nearing, she moved to snuffle his maw a little.  “What are you up to out here? Almost missed ya in the snow!”

Makki smiled wider as Ryd drew closer. He was kinda glad she came to chat, after all, she was the one he knew best. And he felt comfortable around her. The other wolves were nice, but Makki wasn’t too sure of them.

“Hi,” he said, sniffing Ryd’s muzzle in return, albeit a bit rushed. He laughed softly at her question, looking to the side for moment, “I-I’m actually trying to hunt, but I don’t think I’m doing it right…”

Trying to hunt? Aw, the kid. Well, Ryd was more than happy to help him out. What good was a pack if you couldn’t help feed others and yourself?

“That so? I’ll tell you one thing. You won’t get anywhere sitting under a tree.” Tossing him a grin, she moved to nudge at him.

“Come on. Up on your feet. Let’s see what you can do.”

Ryd had a point. Maybe he shouldn’t have given up so easily. Makki got to his feet when Ryd asked him to, giving him a nudge.

“Okay. What now?” God, he was hopeless. Makki gave a sheepish smile to his pack-mate, almost in apology.

(sorry its a little short!!)

(No worries! So are mine, haha.)

Good! Although it really, really, really looked like he had no idea what to do next.  Oh boy,  kiddo, how did you last the desert. To be fair, he was pretty messed up at the end of it.

“Okay! Now we walk,” she said, nodding to him to start walking with her. “Hunting uuuusually takes a loooot of a walking, and you’re mostly stuck with whatever you find. You gotta look around for trails. Tracks, fur, poop… all that fun stuff. So, let’s get tracking!”

(i have no idea what im doing so bare with me lmaoo)

Listening intently to Ryd’s instructions, Makki begun walking beside her. Boy, hunting really was a lot more complicated than what he thought. His parents always seemed to find it so easy, always coming back with a lot of food for him and his brother. Hopefully he could learn quickly.

“Okay,” he nodded. Tracking sounded easy enough. He glanced around for any signs of droppings, or tracks. What Ryd said. There weren’t a lot of places to look, really. The snow was thick and all. But, he still looked.

There were a couple of rabbit droppings close to the treeline, where the snow couldn’t quite cover. He sniffed them a couple of times. They were kind of fresh. “Is this what we’re looking for?” He called, hoping Ryd was nearby.

(You’re doing great <3)

He took to instruction with little fuss, and her heart swelled up with pride. She let him lead for a bit, looking askance for any signs he might have missed.

When he called out, her head lifted, and she trotted over and took a sniff.

“Heyyyy! You sure you’re not an expert?” she grinned, aiming to bump against him playfully. “Nowww, we just gotta sniff around it, see if there’s more scent of the rabbit to tell where it went.”

(im glad!! thank ya <3)

Makki smiled, ducking his head as Ryd gave him a friendly nudge. That was easy! His tail wagged a couple of times in happiness. Ryd was a really good teacher.

Nodding at the next instruction, he put his nose down, frowning in concentration. The scent was stronger like this, so he got a bit confused, but he soon picked up a trail. He glanced in the direction, before looking back at Ryd

“I think it goes over there?” Makki pointed with his muzzle in the direction the scent trail lead, to him at least.

She took a bit to scent where he pointed, and then doubled back and scented around it. There was one leading the opposite way, but that was the natural conundrum, wasn’t it? Which way had it gone.

“Let’s head that way, then!” she said cheerily, nodding him to get moving. He would lead this hunt, even if she was teaching him, and hopefully the trail would stay strong.

He watched as Ryd identified the scent, much better than what he had done. Makki was a little embarrassed when he realised he was a bit off with the direction, but the feeling soon dissolved and he focused on the hunt.

Nodding in agreement, Makki took a hesitant lead, nose to the ground. The scent was pretty strong, but it had its weak moments where he completely freaked out inside his head. But, he soon found it again. Which was reassuring. He didn’t want to muck up on his first hunt.

Blinking a little when the trail got stronger, Makki lifted his head, and spotted a scrawny looking hare a little while away. It was scrabbling near a tree, probably looking for food. He was shocked for a moment, but glanced at Ryd after a heartbeat. “Do I just run at it?” He whispered, trying not to disturb the hare.

She followed Makki, senses alert but mostly just allowing him to figure things out for himself. And she was happy to say, he passed the tracking test.

Now.

He asked, and she nodded, quiet as she lowered her body so the rabbit wouldn’t happen to turn and just see them. “Run a lot. Tire it out and slow it down. Then bite and shake.”

It seemed like common knowledge, but she left nothing to chance. She gave him a brow raise.

Ready?

Following Ryd’s actions, Makki crouched down beside her. Okay, so he does have to run at it. Then… kill it. Makki gulped.

“Okay,” he whispered, slithering forward a little like he’d seen his mum and dad do sometimes.

Then, all at once, he sprung, heart beating frantically. The hare spotted him as soon as he begun to run, and squeaked, running away from him. Makki kept chasing, keeping the pace fast, but not fast enough that he would run outta breath too soon, or not too slow that he would loose the hare.

He didn’t look behind, but he hoped Ryd was following.

Gosh Ryd was so excited for him! He was taking to it like a natural. Which was good because a healthy wolf who couldn’t hunt was basically just one extra hungry mouth to feed, and that wasn’t very nice unless he was a puppy or old or broken.

Ryd followed, her thighs itching for the chase, and when he broke into a run she also did, arcing wide from him with spurring barks to herd the rabbit as between them as possible.

He was definitely one hundred percent gonna get it.
