After losing an extremely eventful race to the rise with Mika, then giving him an extensive tour around the rise, they’d ended up at the creek. Once they reached the once-green tree-line, Oliver had stopped for a moment and touched his nose to Mika’s shoulder with a big, wide grin on his face. He remembered the first time he’d come down here as a child. He’d pondered if he could fly and Atlas had called the pack here to claim it.

In the distance, he could hear the roar of the creek, and he whispered quietly to his friend, “Listen.

The creek was one of the bodies of water that did not freeze during the winter, and he’d gathered that was largely due to the fact that it moved so quickly. Once the ice started to melt in the slower moving regions, it picked up speed even more, and became an extremely dangerous looking thing, and there was no sort of guessing what damage it could do.

Olli was most certainly still a little scared of it, and it was perhaps for good reason. He knew Rhian had been, and that hadn’t helped.

After near enough a minute of standing there in silence with a smile, still in a good mood after a whole afternoon spent with his dear friend Mika, he nudged him gently with his nose and said a gleeful “let’s go” before taking a few steps forwards and venturing into the decaying woodland to explore.

He hoped that Mika would find this half as interesting as he did, because Oliver enjoyed looking up and down the trees as they looked extremely bare this time of year. There was something oddly satisfying about being able to see the sky again, even though he… liked the shelter they brought for the rest of the year.

He’d missed autumn’s show of red given his absence, but he knew he’d see it next year, and this time, he’d get to see it with Mika, as well as with his dad.

It’s so amazing, isn’t it?” Oliver said, almost absent-mindedly as he walked next to Mika, keeping close as ever. He felt quite a bit more comfortable with his friend now, especially given they’d spent the whole afternoon together.

Mika had never won a race before. This was exciting! The tour had been nice so far, and it had gone well into the evening hours, by now. And they still weren’t done with the tour!? This place was huge! Mika could hear the water when Oliver told him to listen, and he nodded. He sure heard that! So they had finally come to the creek, huh? Mika was no real swimmer but he loved nature, and to just watch the water flow and race through the land. The sound of rushing water was oddly satisfying.

He followed Oliver down to the river, eager to see it. He wished the trees still had leaves, though. The place would have been much prettier with leaves on the trees. ’‘I love the sound of flowing water.’‘ Mika said with a smile, tail wagging. He felt so at ease here, it was odd.

’‘It sure is.’‘ Mika agreed with Oliver. ’‘Do a lot of pack wolves come to this place?’‘ he asked. The Rise seemed to have a lot more smells… or maybe that was just Mika’s imagination. If this place was more quiet, he could come here when he needed to be alone. It sounded promising. And it looked promising, too.

Olli glanced at Mika when he said he loved the sound of flowing water. He’d heard some interesting things out of the male’s mouth, some interesting revelations, but that was nice to hear. At least some wolves had some antics that were shared with Oliver, and that was nice. Besides, the sound of running water was soothing…

Yeah, it’s really nice. It’s quite calming.

Mika seemed to at ease, so calm, and Oliver couldn’t tell if it was because he’d gathered a stronger bond with Mika or because of the water. He liked to think it was because they’d gained a bond, but he did believe that the water and the place had something to do with it, as Mika seemed to light up as they arrived here.

And he agreed that it was beautiful, too, which made Olli suspect he loved it even more, so that did make it quite likely that some of the relaxation was to do with the area they were in, rather than the bond they’d formed over time. That didn’t faze Oliver. It’d come with time.

Less wolves come here than they do the rise,” Oliver replied, but he remembered that it had been a place where… dens were. And he thought it might be worth a mention. “Last year, it was used for dens, but I’m not sure how many pregnant females we’ll have this year.

There was no doubt that he’d not be a father this year. He knew that. However, he couldn’t say that there weren’t any prospective fathers in the Alliance, but the amount of women… Well, that was a different story. Still, he’d be happy to be Uncle Oliver to any litters that were born.

My… friend was… buried here,” he admitted gravely, his eyes drifting towards the creek and away from Mika. However, his body drifted closer and he pressed his side to the other male to seek comfort. He’d not had the chance to mourn Veerle’s loss properly, and truth be told, he missed her dearly.

’‘Mhm.’‘ Mika mused to the calming part, tail swishing gently behind him, as he looked at the creek with a smile. He would not jump in, probably only go in the shallows, but it sure was nice to look at. And this place was quiet, too! Not many pack wolves came here. It had been used for dens, Oliver told him, but that didn’t matter to Mika. That meant they sought calm and quiet, too, those mother wolves. This would be the perfect place for him to retreat and yet still be within his possible home.

Suddenly Oliver’s mood seemed to shift, and he leaned into Mika. He was a bit bigger than Mika, but while he was shoved, sort of, his paws still kept standing in the same spot. He now just leaned a bit awkwardly to the left, as Oliver leaned into his right side.
His friend had been buried here? Mika’s ears pressed back at the words, and a sad look appeared on his face. He did not want Oliver to be sad. He needed to say something. But he was not good with words. He never knew what to say about things like this.

’‘I’m sorry to hear that…’‘ he began. He had to start off somewhere. He also guessed he had to be honest with Oliver, now that they were considering each other friends. ’‘I’m sorry, I’m not really good with words… I um, I don’t know what else to say…’‘
Mika did not really like sad conversations. He often tried to avoid sad subjects like the plague. But now he could not not say something.

Mika looked quite genuinely sad, but even if he hadn’t, Oliver wouldn’t have held anything against him.

The tranquillity of the creek made this place somewhere perfect to bury Veerle, and alongside that, it had been there the Morris family made their home, so he understood why they’d buried her here. However, he’d never found it as comforting since, even with the creek in the background. He still saw the beauty in it and he still loved it here, but there were just parts of it that made him sad, especially when he came upon the small clearing he knew to be the Morris’ old rendezvous site.

Mika apologised, and Olli looked at him, pulling his gaze away from the bark of a dying tree that he was studying – scrutinising each and every individual bump and crack – to look at him and his much darker pelt. He looked nothing like any of the ‘Qui family, and it was a refreshing thing.

Oliver reached out his nose by instinct and pressed it to Mika’s cheek as the other male continued to speak, not wanting him to continue his apologies or his speeches, not wanting his sympathy. He didn’t need it. The male didn’t need to make his case – say he was bad with words – because his physical contact and being there made Oliver feel much better, and that was all the boy needed.

It’s fine, Mika,” he said genuinely, pulling away and taking a tiny step away from the male, just so they weren’t pressed firmly to one another any longer. “You don’t have to say anything… Let’s just continue with the tour. It’s not up to you to be sorry. It happens.

It was a fact of life that wolves died, Oliver knew that, but it was just a pain to him that it happened so often in his life. He wished it didn’t, but he seemed unable to escape it.

We can hunt here, if you want. I think sometimes we find some deer, maybe, but I’m not sure what’ll be here in the winter. We’ll see,” Oliver suggested, his face brighter now.

He hoped Mika didn’t feel… awkward. That was the last thing he wanted for his friend. The prospect of a hunt had brightened the male up last time, so he hoped that the reminder would at least do something similar this time if he was feeling awkwardly shy again.

It was fine, Oliver said. But was it really fine? This place reminded him if his dead friend. His friend had been buried here. That was not fine, it did not sound like a fun place to come back to, anymore. Had Mika ever witnessed death, he would have avoided bury grounds for the rest of his life. Mika never knew how to cope with loss, so he avoided, and ignored, and tried to forget. He never really cried, either. Maybe that wasn’t a good thing.

He cried so much, about all kinds of things, silly things. But never about death, or loss, in whatever kind of way. As if it did not hurt him. And to be honest, sometimes when he lost someone or something dear to him, he did not feel anything. Sometimes he cried a little. Just a little bit. Maybe he had just never been close with anyone he cared about?

Oh yeah, the hunt. Suddenly, speaking of death, switching the conversation to a hunt, he thought of the animal they were going to hunt, and his stomach seemed to twist. ’‘Um… yeah. Let’s look around.’‘ he said, not really as eager anymore as before. He cried over killed prey, but not dead wolves. Maybe there really was something wrong with him. Was he going to cry over some dead food in front of Oliver? He hoped not, it would make him look like a total idiot… ’‘Something big?’‘
Or did Oliver prefer small prey?

Mika’s loss of eagerness seemed to humble Oliver into looking at him with a concerned face, and he worried that maybe he’d said something wrong. However, Mika continued and questioned if they’d go for something big, and that was good enough for them to continue. They’d promised one another a hunt before finding Atlas – something that would hopefully seal Mika as a Warden – and Olli hoped whatever they hunted would be memorable and help make their friendship stronger.

As big as you want,” Oliver teased, his eyes bright. “I reckon we can catch it. After all, you beat me to the rise, and I’m the King of races.

And he was. He remembered being “King Oliver” when Alessandro was around, but… the male seemed to have disappeared, and part of Oliver wondered if he’d ever got the chance to know that both Arrow and Veerle were gone. He knew those two meant a lot to the male.

Let’s see what we find, hey, Mika?

They would find something big, most likely, and Olli thought they could catch it. They were both fast enough, and they were both strong enough.

’‘We will see if we catch it or not. I’m not the best hunter.’‘ Mika responded, smiling sheepishly. He still felt rather ashamed, of the fact that he pretty much sucked at a lot of things. ’‘But yeah, let’s go sniffing, then.’‘

And with that, Mika turned to sniffing around the area, near the creek, trying to find the scent of some prey. Big prey, maybe. Something they could catch and eat. And maybe once they were done eating they could leave the remains for the Alliance, as some sort of gift?
Yeah, tha sounded neat.

Not the best hunter. Well, they’d find out, wouldn’t they? Mika seemed to lack self-confidence, but Oliver thought that Mika would become quite good at most things here, even if he thought he wasn’t good at things. He’d never been a “good” hunter, but he’d got better because he’d tried and practiced, so as long as Mika tried, he’d be happy.

I’m sure you’re better than you think.

Oliver trailed somewhere off behind Mika, sniffing for the scent of something that lived nearby. He knew there were many small rodent-like creatures that lived on the rise and near the creek, but there were sure to be antelope and deer nearby, and he was looking for scents like that.

Eeeeeh, Mika doubted it, but he shot Mika a little smile and then turned back to sniffing. Trying to track some food. It took a bit, but eventually he thought he smelled the scent of a deer, not too far from here. With a little frown, he lifted his head and looked to Oliver. ’‘I think there’s a deer nearby.’‘ he whispered, and noise pointed back in the direction of the scent. ’‘It’s going this way…’‘

Mika started moving in that direction, hoping Oliver would follow. A deer huh? Pretty, big creatures. Mika was so small compared to them… He hoped nothing bad would happen.

They both sniffed, Oliver trailing behind Mika, and the youngest of the pair hoped they’d find something large to satisfy them and to give them something to impress Atlas. It would also give them a chance to challenge their friendship too, so that was good.

Olli could smell deer, and Mika seemed to smell it too, as he pointed it out. He smiled at the other male, happy to go for this.

Shall we then?” he offered, gesturing towards the way the scent went.

Mika nodded, and moved out after the scent, head held low and ears pressed forward. He worried, about the hunt. Over how they were going for big prey. They could get a kick to the head… they could get hurt and die. And he did not like that thought. Mika was often scared when it came to hunting, though. Especially big prey. His worry was nothing new. But that did not mean he would ever get used to it.

He sniffed about, following the scent. It was faint but he was sure they would get closer, soon enough.

Oliver kept his nose low and his body as close to Mika as he possibly could. He didn’t press himself against the male, but he also didn’t break away from him. They were tracking the same small cluster of scents – there were two, maybe three deer – and Olli didn’t want to lose them. He could tell they were nearby, but it could possibly take a while to find them, and he knew that, if they were all together, they’d have to have a good strategy to take them down. And as they were close, calling for backup would most definitely startle them and send them running

Well, at least they had found tracks and moved with ease. Quickly, it did not take long before the scents became stronger, and Mika grew more nervous, the closer the deer got to them. Or well, the closer they got to the deer. Mika looked at Oliver for a moment, just to make sure he was still there, Mika guessed. But why would Oliver leave his side in a situation like this? Mika’s mind was a weird place.

Eventually Mika thought he saw them up ahead. Two deer, chewing on the bark of some trees near them. Of course, they could not get grass in this weather, not much, at least. So they went to bark. Lack of food should make them weaker and slower, right? Mika looked at the deer, then at Oliver. He had seen them too, most likely. Which one should they go for? Which one was weak?

The scent was definitely getting stronger and that made Oliver feel both excitement and dread. He didn’t know what fate the hunt would bring, but whatever it was, he did feel excited at the prospect of it, especially at the prospect of hunting with a new friend.

He hoped desperately that Mika would prove himself here… that he would show how much of a good hunter he really was. Olli had little doubts about what Mika could do, especially after he’d seemed so unsure, then beaten him at a race right after they’d met. It was a wonderful thing to note and Oliver would never let that go, at least. He knew he’d lost, but Mika was challenging him as King, wasn’t he? Ooooh, one day, he’d get him back.

Up ahead, Oliver spotted the deer. He realised that Mika saw them too, and he stopped where he was, careful to not make noise so to not alert the deer to their presence.

The pair of them looked quite healthy for dwelling here in the winter, but he couldn’t say they were at the best of their game. He couldn’t tell which one to go for yet, so he guessed they would just chase them and see which one fell back first. The slowest, that is.

Both were does, as it were, so they didn’t have to deal with an angry buck with antlers, that was for sure.

Let’s chase them and see who falls behind,” Oliver suggested under his breath as he came up alongside Mika to whisper it in his ear. He didn’t want the deer to have any reason to start running other than them themselves.

Find a spot in the trees, then we’ll both come out and hopefully startle them into a run.

And then the chase would begin. Olli knew well enough that the majority of the hunt was a chase.

Yes, chasing sounded good. They would go for the slower one. Mika nodded, to let Oliver know he had heard him, and understood. Find a spot at the trees, to hide, so they could get closer to the deer. Again a nod, and Mika started stalking to the side, to get to the trees. He made sure to move quickly and carefully. He did not want to make any sounds now and startle them. Then their chase would be a lot harder.

Reaching the trees, Mika wiggled in between a few and hid himself in the shadows. His black coat made it look like he was being sucked into the darkness. His coat did better at night, and it was already getting dark. This was the only reason why he liked winter. He could hide himself easily.

He started creeping closer to the prey, in the shadows of the trees.
