There were rogues here, a few of them in fact, Seeker could smell as he skirted around the edge of the hollow. Wary of groups, even small ones, even after such a positive encounter with Catrine. He didn’t know if he was just due some good luck and a kind face, but he’d been grateful, nonetheless.

Theo would have liked her.

Seeker padded very cautiously over the grass, ever alert for that one elusive scent, for anything - a stray white tuft of fur caught on a bush, a pawprint the right size, the scent he hadn’t forgotten even after weeks. Doggedly he tracked more towards the center of the hollow. He told himself to stop being such a coward. A few rogues had probably banded together in a sheltered spot for winter. That didn’t mean they were dangerous. Storm was right over the river and Sonya he had last scented on this side, so she was probably close by.

There was no need to be such a basket case!

It was about that time he picked up a scent he knew - not the one he’d been tracking, and he snorted in horror and reared his back, frantically exhaling and trying to clear the very unwanted scent out of his nostrils.

That snooty princess from when he’d first been looking for Theo that accused him of being loud or waking her up and sneered he wouldn’t survive because he hadn’t laughed at her seriously not-funny joke. Sienna.

While the rule had never been expressly stated (it seemed Nanook instinctively knew better than to tell her she couldn’t do something), Senna always tried to be home before nightfall.  She hated that tight, worried look on her guardian’s face and the edge in his voice when she was late.

The girl was approaching the hollow at a brisk trot, trying to beat the sunset and stave off the cold. It looked like it might start snowing any moment now, and she hoped to be snuggled into her little nest with Nanook before the weather hit.

She met with a strange—yet familiar—scent. “Clint?” she called, her voice ringing out in the chilly air.  The scent of the Firewing Brotherhood was etched in her mind after that horrible encounter with Clint’s nasty brother, Stark.  She wouldn’t soon forget either brother—the one who had fed her when she was starving, and the one who had provoked her to the point of tears on purpose. Who does something like that?

Senna peered into the gathering darkness, continuing toward the scent. She was fairly certain it wasn’t Clint or Stark, now that she was closer. A stranger, then?

“Hello?” she called out again.

Seeker knew the girl was coming, not so occupied with one unwanted scent he missed an unknown one. He turned towards the sound of pawsteps, so by the time she approached he was already looking her way, ears pricked, stance low, but not defensive or apprehensive -  just alert.

Just in case.

His emerald gaze flicked over her and he startled slightly. Her eyes were just as green as his were. Well, given he knew about his parents now, he couldn’t possibly have any younger siblings running around out there.

It was weird though. Somehow, he felt more at ease. Smiles were beyond him specially after picking up Sienna’s scent here, but he did give his tail a lowset wave.

“Hiya.” He woofed cautiously. “It’s all right - I’m not here for trouble, I’m just looking for somebody.”

His ever-sharp ears had not missed the call of Clint though, presumably because he still had some lingering Brotherhood scent. Her nose is sharp.

((Yeee I think this may be my first Windy thread <3))

It didn’t even occur to Senna that the visitor might be hostile. Call her naive, but she just couldn’t comprehend the idea of there being anything or anyone dangerous around the sanctuary. It was her safe place; bad things weren’t allowed to happen here.

She had also remembered what Clint told her—that there were a lot of nice wolves in the Firewing Brotherhood. At the time, he had mostly been saying that to make up for his brother’s nastiness, but Senna hadn’t forgotten. Their visitor was one of those nice wolves, Senna was certain.

“Hi!” she barked back when she finally found the visitor.  He reminded her of her friend Volly, at first glace. It was probably just the fact that he was a young male and had green eyes, but Senna was hopeful that he would have the same sense of humor and friendly demeanor as Volly… despite the cautious, unsmiling look on his face.

“Okay,” she answered, grinning big enough for the two of them. “There are lotsa people here!” she told him, glad she could be helpful. “Nanook, Dalus, Adonai, Sienna…” Her tail wagged as she named off the sanctuary wolves. ”..And me, Senna Selwyn!” she added with the laugh. Of course he wasn’t looking for her, but strangers usually liked to know your name, right?

Seeker suddenly shuffled his paws, self conscious. She was smaller than him, and clearly no threat, and he felt no attraction naturally. But she was so soft and clean and fluffy and blindingly white like freshly fallen snow.

He dropped his head to break eye contact, worried she was staring at the ugly pink scar over his eye, then he altered his position a bit so the shoulder with all the horrible scarring and missing fur wasn’t pointed at her. Maybe she wouldn’t notice? Well there wasn’t much missing the one on his face he knew, after looking down at himself in the river that one time. It was glaringly obvious a scar.

Five of them all up. Maybe he’d been right about rogues wintering together.

“Um. Hey Senna.” He began lamely. If she knew Clint she knew the Brotherhood, so should he give his name? He wouldn’t for now. “I’m not looking for any of them.” He was the opposite of looking for one of them. “It’s a young boy, smaller than you, white with black ears, eyes and nose. His name’s Theodore, have you seen a boy like that around…?”

((History indeed my friend :D First of many I hope!))

The visitor seemed to be shying away a little, which disappointed Senna. So, he wasn’t going to be fun like Volly, then? Too bad.

Senna reigned herself in a little bit, remembering that her enthusiasm was sometimes off-putting to others. That was what she assumed was going on; she didn’t really give a passing thought to the boy’s scars. After traveling on her own for the last moon or so, she had come across wolves with all sorts of scarring, mage, deformities—you name it, really.  If the visitor had been in perfect condition this far into winter, now that would be usual.

“Oh, kinda like Stark?” Senna asked after the boy gave Theodore’s description. Stark was also white with black on his face.. he had kind of reminded Senna of a skunk when she met him. Maybe the missing wolf was another brother? Hopefully Theodore was more like Clint than he was like Stark, especially if he was lurking around the hollow somewhere.  The last thing Senna wanted was to bump into another Stark.

“Umm, no.. well- wait! Dalus is like that, sorta. Kinda skinny, with black on his ears. Not on his face, though.” Quite belatedly, Senna realized that if Dalus was actually Theodore, and he had run all the way here and changed his name, then he probably didn’t want to be found. “No, nevermind. Dalus is Dalus, not Theodore,” she rushed to correct herself. It was Senna’s turn to break eye contact awkwardly.

The girl offered a bit too much information, revealing she knew Stark as well as Clint, meaning she must have spent some time in the glen, but then talking about some Dalus guy as well. Who had black ears. But as she quickly realized, Dalus wasn’t Theodore.

She looked embarrassed, and he felt a bit sorry for her. She was eons away from the last wolf he’d met, the capable, collected Catrine. But she was young, and she’d clearly been sheltered instead of tackling the world the way he had when he was her age.

“It’s okay.” He told her gruffly. “So, you like living here with your uh, friends?” How the hell could anybody be friends with that bitch Sienna, especially a nice, naive girl like this?

“Friends?” Senna looked back up, confused. After a second, she realized that he was talking about the people she had just named. He thought they were her friends. If only…

“Oh. Um, I live here with Nanook. We’re family…” The word family rolled of of Senna’s tongue so easily, it surprised even her.  But it felt right.

”..But the others, um…” She had only just met the others, at the meeting that Sienna called in order to “make the sanctuary official.” What did that really mean anyway, “official?” From the way the others responded, it meant that they had to decide who got to tell who what to do. Who gets to be alpha, who gets to be beta… it had reminded Senna of when she was a pup and had played “house” with her age-mates.

“..I just try to stay out of their way,” Senna said finally. Dalus was injured and healing, and on top of that he seemed to hate every moment he spent around Senna. The others seemed really wrapped up with him, caring for him, trying to convince him to not be so shy. It seemed to Senna like an exercise in futility.

This topic was getting to be sort of a bummer. “Is your family back in the Firewing Brotherhood?” she asked, changing the subject. “Theodore?” Maybe the boy he was looking for was related? The visitor had been awfully quiet about his own background, even though it was obvious that Senna knew his packmates. What was he so worried about? He hadn’t even said his name yet…

This pup didn’t seem at all certain of what she was asking at first, and the yearling grasped for how to explain until she clicked and pointed out that she and Nanook were family. Okay, so the kid had someone looking out for her, good - she seemed like she’d need it.

Then she hesitated over bringing up the others, admitted she stayed out of the way. He fully understood why, after his last encounter with a certain chocolate yearling who thought she was better than him. His ears came forward almost sympathetically. “Don’t let Sienna bully you. You’re way nicer than she is.” He said gruffly due to the compliment. “It’s nice here, and you have a right to be here, and feel at home.”

There was the question she had asked about the Brotherhood, and his moment of confidence in assuring her soon dipped.

“Everybody’s family in the Brotherhood. That’s why we’re called that - and that’s why I’m looking for Theo.” He explained more softly, tail tucking, upset at the notion he was still no closer to finding Theo.

There was still the lake packs though.

Senna blinked in surprise when Seeker brought up Sienna, speaking about her like he knew her. So they both knew each other’s packmates then. Senna supposed they were bound to have some acquaintances in common, living so close together.

Don’t let Sienna bully her—ha! Easier said than done. Even the adults, Nanook and Adonai, let Sienna run all over them. They had let the yearling completely take charge of the last pack meeting and they even let her choose the alpha of the sanctuary! Senna’s voice was a whisper in the wind compared to Sienna’s roar.

The visitor had meant to compliment her though, so Senna managed a sad sort of smile. “You’re way nicer than Stark,” she returned, smile turning up a little more. The yearling spoke about Senna’s right to be here and feel at home, which was a little confusing to her, but she wagged her tail anyway because the words were meant to be kind.  Senna wasn’t in the habit of assuming she deserved anything from the people around her, so it was odd to hear the visitor speak that way.

All this time, she had been keeping out from underfoot, sleeping outside of the hollow, trying not to bother any of the others who were sick, or shy, or had been here first. If she had just as much right to the hollow as the others, did that mean she could just.. go be in there no matter what? Even if it made Dalus uncomfortable?

“That sounds really great,” Senna commented on the visitor’s description of the Firewing Brotherhood. What an cool idea; a pack becoming your family once you join. Senna thought that Clint and this nice visitor would make great brothers… even Stark would be a good person to have on your side, Senna figured.  She felt a little bit of jealously for the visitor and his big, happy family.

“Where will you look next?” Senna asked, “Did you look around The Kingdom yet?  Maybe this visitor brought with him news about Elliot. Senna had been wondering how he was doing and what had ever happened with Wayfarer and Nima.

Oddly, although Stark was one of his least-favourite packmates, Seeker still felt some urge to protect him, though he still made an effort to smile at what had clearly been a compliment.

“Stark’s just an Alpha’s pup with no father because the jerk ran out on the family before he was born. S’not really his fault.” He grunted, looking faintly guilty at correct her impression of Stark.

Senna wanted to know where he was going next. “I’m going north to the lake packs, see if they’ve seen Theo there. But I don’t know anything about the Kingdom?” He put his head on one side, looking like a very tall lanky puppy.

At first she had thought she was smelling stuff. A stroll, really, a leisurely walk around the sanctuary. Until she smelled a smelly smell that was a smell she very much did not like.  Following it, with a vigor close to annoyance, another scent soon followed with.

”...let Sienna bully you, You’re way nicer than she is. It’s nice here, and you have a right to be here, and feel at home.” Excuse me? What? She didn’t want her presence known just yet. She would continue to listen. She couldn’t help but feel her lip raised in agitation at the words. She hadn’t bullied anyone, had she? Sure, she hadn’t been the most open lately, but when was she ever out-right mean? Especially to Senna? Nanook’s kid?

With the thick snow, there was almost no where for her to hide. So she didn’t, she couldn’t see them yet but she could hear them and Sienna, so far, was not happy of what was coming from the voice she so very despised. He was the one who gave her an attitude in the first place, and now he had the audacity to come into her home and speak about her in such a way?

A growl escaped her lips, lowly, hauntingly. She was on the verge of being angry, his words were not welcome.

[will arrive next round]

Senna’s brow knit as Seeker defended his packmate, and her gaze drifted down to her paws. She shuffled her feet in annoyance; the girl didn’t do well with guilty feelings. Especially when others were giving them to her on purpose. Should she really pity the boy who had voted to withhold food from a starving girl, choosing instead to bully her into crying? Senna thought not. Hell, at least he still had his mom, right? From what Clint said, she was a real nice lady. “Some of us don’t have any parents,” she mumbled toward the ground, with enough volume for Seeker to hear but not really loud enough to invite further discussion.

The girl perked up when the visitor asked about The Kingdom. “It’s about a day’s walk south of here. The King there, Elliot, he took care of me for a little while. Maybe he’s taking care of Theo.” Senna felt like she should probably say something about the danger and drama surrounding the butte pack, to warn her new friend, but she didn’t know where to start. “He wanted me to stay and be in his pack, but.. but I didn’t like it there…” If Theo was there, he might should be checked on. Not by Senna though. Nanook would lose his head if Senna went anywhere near the butte on her own.

“Know what that’s like.” Seeker murmured back about the mention of parents, but in a quiet tone that indicated he would drop the topic if Senna wanted him to. He had parted his jaw to ask more about this Elliot guy, and why she hadn’t stayed if he was so great, but he caught a scent. Not one on the ground, the way it would have been from Sienna walking by two days ago like the first one he’d noticed when he arrived.

This scent stirred in the winter air, in motion - she was coming, and a second later he heard an angry growl and the crunching sound of pawsteps in the snow. Instantly Seeker began sidestepping, casting an apologetic look at Senna.

After nearly being killed, and several other largely negative encounters, Seeker was far warier of conflict these days than he had been. And he had never been a very trusting wolf.

Senna herself had not seemed to scent Sienna nor hear the growl, but Seeker didn’t hold that against her. Not all young wolves had lived the life he did, breathing in scents as soon as he could walk, spending hours honing his reactions and sharping his hunting skills. Senna was a naive wolf, and he actually envied her that.

He wished life were still that simple for him.

“Sorry Senna - Sienna is on her way and she hates my guts. You might not believe me but I’m not one for fighting.” He left the while she probably is unspoken on the end of his sentence, breaking into a skittish jog to put more distance between himself and where he calculated Sienna would appear by her sound and scent.

“No point growling from the shadows, Sienna, I know you’re there. And I’m leaving, I certainly didn’t come here to see you.” He lifted his voice so she’d hear him.

((Not fully exiting yet, but making moves in the opposite direction to Sienna, clearly getting ready to bolt if he’s pushed))

Senna lifted her gaze from her paws questioningly when she heard the words that Seeker mumbled. His eyes were a similar color to hers… and so, perhaps, was his sadness. A smile of sorrowful camaraderie pulled at her lips, but she didn’t know what else to say on the subject.  Sometimes people didn’t need words to support one another though, and this maybe felt like one of those times.

Senna had not detected the other female approaching—Sienna’s scent was all over the Hollow all the time, and it was reflex for her to dismiss it as friendly and nonthreatening.  So it came to her as a surprise when the visitor began shrinking away.  Senna’s ears flattened in distress. Wow, he was really unsettled, huh? And he thought Sienna would try to fight him?! Senna finally registered the fresh scars on the visitor’s face and shoulder… Sienna hadn’t done that had she?

Senna began backing away along with Seeker. After making such a scene at Sienna’s pack meeting, she wasn’t sure if she was ready to face the older girl yet. Especially if she was mad. “Let’s run,” Senna uttered under her breath, so only Seeker would hear. With one last nervous look at her new friend, she began scampering.

Three day skip on Sienna, so we can move characters out of threadlock. Senna is also making moves toward an exit; will exit fully next round unless Sienna appears. Chris, if you want to continue the thread somewhere we can write them as running together, or if you’re ready to wrap up (I know Seeker is a bit threadlocked) feel free to write them as running away in different directions.
