Deer were stupid, and he, quietly thankful for the lack of the Circle’s scent. Because a herd was wandering in the open, just past where their borders used to be—a bit further out but still close.

This could be an amazing opportunity.

Bali had quickly backed further into the trees, nosing around for his children. “Altair? Rota?” he called, quieter than his usual voice.

There was deer scent and Dad voice and Altair heading in a completely different direction to both of them.

Rota rolled her eyes.

She didn’t have the time nor patience to get all up in his scent trail was two of her favorite things were calling out to. Literally.

“Here,” she called back as she picked her way toward the treeline, sniffing intently.

He heard Rota’s voice and headed her way, seeing her soon enough. “I need to talk to you and Altairrr,” Bali said. Despite his tone it was pretty serious information he had to give. “Let’s hunt first though? There’s a herd passing right by the meadow,” Bali informed, equally baffled by the luck as he assumed she would be.

He wasn’t convinced two wolves were the greatest team they could muster, and he wasn’t convinced it would end successfully, but no harm done in trying.

Sunfall hadn’t been all that keen to set paw back in the meadow. Flowers, urgh. But the scent of deer was unmistakable, and he had a pregnant mate to feed, and he and he could also pick up Bali’s scent. That guy seemed to have a good head on his shoulders - if Sunfall helped out with a hunt he’d probaably be okay with sharing. There was another scent with him, but he assumed it was his kid, so he wasn’t worried.

Not much worried Sunfall.

On the northeast edge of the meadow, he pricked his good ear and tried to figure out if anyone else was in on this hunt. No? Just Bali and a kid? Well then, they would definitely need the Champion Deer-Hunter Extraordinaire helping out!

He wasn’t (quite) stupid enough to bark and give away his location to the no-so-distant herd, but he did find himself a dead tree probably felled by that storm, scrambled up the side and stood on top of the trunk. From here he could make out Bali and a female kid. He parted his jaws in a ready grin, and wagged his tail in case the kid was sharp-eyed enough to see his collection of scars.

Wouldn’t go to scare the locals.

She tilted her head as she approached, curious about what he wanted to talk about but also very wholeheartedly for waiting in favor of a hunt. Especially if that hunt was an entire herd right outside the meadow.

“Let’s do it,” she whispered eagerly, her tail wagging. Her nostrils flared to catch a whiff of the herd, but caught a hint of something entirely different instead. And it was fresh.

Her gaze flickered past her father toward a downed tree, following the curve of its trunk to a bright blondish wolf perched atop.

Rota bristled at the sight. “Dad,” she hissed under her breath, her eyes locked on the stranger. “Someone’s there.”

Rota seemed eager, and Bali grinned, paws beginning to move towards the meadow. Except Rota was suddenly bristling, calling him under her breath. He regarded her with slightly widened eyes, wondering what had gotten her attention, when he followed her gaze.

There stood a large wolf like himself, on a fallen tree. A very bizarre sight, but Bali immediately chuckled, going to nudge Rota playfully with his shoulder. “That’s Sunfall,” he introduced. “I met him just recently. He’s hanging around this area with his mate right now. I think she might be pregnant. Nice guy,” Bali reassured, not wanting to call him strange or comical when he could probably hear him speaking from where he was.

Bali didn’t want to yell to the male, given the herd nearby, so he instead pulled his head back in a motion which invited him closer to them.

((Fitting this in a Sunfall timeline obviously after his first meeting with Bali, but also as after he last spoke with Saski and before he crossed the river to the hollow; if okay? Shouldn’t effect you guys <3 ))

Sunfall hopped down, and worked towards the pair in a wide loop to the deer. No wrecking hunts! He definitely seemed to have alarmed the girl form the way she stared and bristled, so when he was a bit closer, he stuck his head around a dead shrub (he eyed the ground ahead warily for flowers) and grinned readily. He kept his body posture entirely open; friendly, he was not alarmed by Bali and not afraid of a kid he’d scared because he looked like a bruiser.

He wouldn’t stick around if he was intruding on Family Bonding Time, but three wolves were better than two when it came to deer.

He tilted his head towards the herd. “Want help?” He mouthed more than spoke.

Sunfall?

She finally tore her gaze away from the strange wolf when her father chuckled, confusion rippling across her face. Well… if Dad said he was okay, then.

Rota’s snout wrinkled slightly as Sunfall padded closer, her tail waving hesitantly at her heels. The guys was pretty… weird looking, all covered in scars with a weird, torn, floppy ear that might as well not be there at all and bright orange fur and two different eye colors like Yuna. Except, somehow his weren’t quite as pretty.

“Uh, hi,” she woofed quietly, blinking and willing the fur along her spine to settle. She glanced toward Dad. While she was more than certain that she could take down an entire deer by herself, she knew Dad probably wanted the help.

For safety reasons.

Rota seemed to settle, offering Sunfall a small hi, while Sunfall asked if they needed help.

“Always appreciate more wolves on a big hunt,” Bali admitted quietly. The more wolves, the likelier they’d succeed. Heavens knew he wasn’t the youngest anymore…

“Let’s see what we’ve got,” he added, padding closer to the treeline.

The kid offered a hello, and that was about ten times better than a set of teeth or a snarl, so Sunfall grinned once at her, then shot her a wink with the blue eye.

“Don’t sweat it girl, I’m a pretty lethal deer hunter. We can all be eating well in a little bit.” He assured her in his usual cocky fashion. Bali gave him the go ahead and his tail wagged cheerily. It was on!

He almost broke into a gallop for the first few strides, but then remembered this wasn’t his turf and he’d invited himself to this hunt, and so he settled down, and matched Bali’s pace. He jogged along but not close in a flanking motion to the older male, his upright ear fastened on him to indicate he was ready to move.

((Oooooh I just saw that Rota has a crossed-out line under ‘mother’, buuuuurn Kara!))

The corner of Rota’s mouth quirked at her father, her tail raising to wag freely behind her. Truthfully, she had very little experience when T came to hunting anything bigger than a weasel. And by very little she meant none at all.

But she’d be damned if she was out-hunted by some pretty boy nice guy stranger.

Her eyes narrowed in playful challenge at Sunfall as she picked up the pace to overtake the both of them. Rota could be a pretty lethal deer hunter herself. Deer were basically just big wolves and the little notch in her ear more than proved she could handle herself just fine around other wolves.

“No need to be cocky,” Bali snorted with a grin at Sunfall, eyeing the herd at the treeline. “Let’s go for whoever lags behind. Agreed?” he added, going for the typical tactic. It was typical because it worked better than overcomplicating.

Oho it was so on by the look on the girl’s face! Sunfall wouldn’t let a little friendly competition ruin a hunt but he did like to have a good time. And what was more good than a good run in a good hunt with good company and a good meal at the end?

He wanted to shoot a cocky comment back at Bali, but instead he decided they were to close to the deer and just nodded, showing he was ready.

Don’t be cocky, Sunfall, go for whatever lags behind, yadda yadda. Rota had it covered.

As soon as they were close enough, she took off barking and snapping at the herd.

Sunfall nodded, Rota didn’t. But he assumed she’d understood the plan. It was… logical, and she was a smart girl.

As soon as they came to a point where they couldn’t carry on being unseen, Bali took off at a sprint with his companions.

Sunfall loved this.

The run, the exhilaration, the way his big paws kicked up snow. Having wolves run beside him only highlighted the social aspect of the hunt, the way that more than one wolf could work in tandem. There was a symmetry to it, odd for a wolf who took life as it rolled out before his paws.

Really, Sunfall just reveled in that powerful, invincible feeling that stemmed from seeing bigger animals flee from them, the natural order of things. Predator and prey.

He was having so much fun in the chase he sort of forgot the step where he was meant to be picking the weakest or slowest to attack, but this wasn’t his hunt, and maybe it was better that he followed somebody else’s lead.
