Seeker had come here with every intention of calling the pack that lived here, and he took a deep breath as he stepped into their trees. He was up early, unable to sleep, and it was surely too early to cal yet. He scanned the area nervously - nobody around. That was okay, he’d gotten here two seconds ago and he hadn’t yet found the courage to howl. Kaete had assured him this pack was friendly, but Seeker had had some poor experiences with supposedly friendly packs, so…
Almost automatically, his nose twitched, his jaws parted and he inhaled deeply as he began testing the scents around here. His mind catalogued them, ever scanning for potential threats.
Pack scent. Rogue, older male. Pack pee, border marking. Rogue puppy, ill. Pack scent. Theodore…
WOOOOOAAAAAAH WHAT GO BACK GO BACK WAIT JUST A MINUTE NOW.
Seeker exploded violently up out of his cautious walk like a snake had latched onto his ankle. It hadn’t, he never would have been stupid enough to step on a snake whatever the season, but anyone could have been forgiven for thinking that if they’d been there to see the way Seeker jumped up and twisted in midair. He came down with his paws already moving and shot over to press his nose to the snow-dusted ground.
Days. It was only days ago that Theo had been here. Right here. For a moment Seeker scrabbled at nothing.
Then he put his muzzle up and he howled and he howled, forgetting he was standing on a pack’s border at dawn and it was too early whoops sorry any Cadre wolves who liked winter lie-ins. Then, for good measure, he capered out into the snow like the yearling he was.
“SONYAAAAAAAAAAA! STOOOOOOORMFROOOOONT!” He roared out, voice ringing with delight and relief in what was clearly a total reversal of his cautious and often negative nature. He couldn’t help it. This was the best thing ever.
Theodore had been here. He could track him from here! There were no pawprints, it had snowed since the puppy had passed here and filled those in, but his nose never lied. A light snowfall hadn’t destroyed the scent trail. He’d headed west from here.
He wouldn’t loose it this time. He would find him. And he would stop letting everyone important in his life down.
((May need to be backdated a day to work but shouldn’t affect anything I don’t think))
