Maaike peered down the slope of the land to where she could see a mostly frozen stream. The gradient of the land wasn’t too bad, and they could make it down without needing to scramble. It was no worse than some of the hills around the range. Yet she was uncertain. Maaike looked back over her shoulder, her brown eyes seeking Tita’s. Seeking reassurance.

Was this it? She thought they had been told to follow the river, which they had found easily enough. But there was a clear morning breeze scented with salt and all sorts of scents Maaike was totally unfamiliar with blowing down the gorge. It set her a little on edge.

“Tita, you’ll stay close right? If we find any of the dangerous wolves, we’ll face them together.” She drew herself up a little. She was scared, facing this area she had been told was dangerous - but it was her job to protect. Both her sisters.

That was why they had come. In her imagination, Maaike was almost picturing a fairy-tale rescue. Maeve kept prisoner here by the potentially cruel wolves of the beach. She and Tita would sneak in, follow her scent, help her escape, and get her back home safely!

She knew it wasn’t going to work quite like that. But still, she felt a mingling of nerves and excitement.

((OOC note that Tita and Maaike are presumed to have split up from Obe, Dem and Rhydian for their part of the search but they have very likely all gone as a family to the coastline))

Tita had never seen the edge of the world which Lysander had described. Actually, she had, once, up in the mountains. But that was from a really high spot. This, she could feel, would be significantly lower.

She hadn’t expected so much rock, honestly. They stood together, close to the strong scent of a pack, and it was just rock and rock and lots of potential for Maaike to be her clumsy self and fall. She could see a frozen stream, too.

Tita nodded as her sister sought reassurance.

“You know how Atlas said the Bucky guy is from the Rangers?” Tita asked, glancing at her sister. “I’ve met a wolf from there… here,” she corrected, though was admittedly still unsure if this was home to that pack or the other one on the beach she’d heard from. “Her name was Kaete. She was nice.” A frown, because she was suspicious of everything. She’d have to ask if they hurt Abrielle too, or if that was the other group. “Should we… search for Maeve, or howl for someone?”

She’d never entered pack territory that wasn’t that of the Alliance’s before.

Maaike touched her flank to her sister’s when she nodded. There were the two of them. Together they could face anything.  Her ears pricked up in interest when Tita said that she knew a wolf from this pack, and they were nice.

“Obe said nobody was mean to him and Deme either.” She spoke slowly. “Oh and he said they met somebody from the Rangers!” She was excited to remember this detail but calmed herself down quickly.

“Well… you’re meant to howl at borders.” Maaike sniffed at the gorge, easily able to pick up the border markers. This pack smelled so different to the Alliance! She remembered how Fawn had gotten in trouble for trespassing, and then the guy sniffing after Tyra, too. “But. If Maeve is trapped here it’d be stupid to let the pack know we’re here. Maybe we ought to sneak in without calling, sniff around for her, and if somebody comes from the pack we can say we got lost and were looking for shelter from the wind?” She looked at Tita to see what she thought of this plan.

“That lie isn’t… a great one,” she admitted with a bit of an uncomfortable look. “Especially when we’re big enough to take care of ourselves.” If these wolves killed others, she was pretty sure a lie like that wouldn’t fly for even a second. The lie also didn’t really excuse crossing pretty obvious borders.

“A wolf called Nima came by our borders. Do you think if she went past Athena and me she’d have been… attacked?” Tita asked, standing beside her sister, thinking through their possibilities. “I don’t want to be attacked by this pack if they’re crazy like Abrielle said, but I don’t know if I want to howl for them either.”

A short pause.

“But maybe howling is the only way for Maeve to know we’re here and howl back.” If she was, in fact, being held against her will.

Maaike scowled, her feelings hurt when Tita said her lie wasn’t a good one. She thought it was. The range was always windy! “It was a cover story, not a lie.” She protested, but she did listen to what her sister was saying.

“I don’t know. If Nima was dangerous like the guy who wanted Tyra, maybe. But we shouldn’t compare this Ranger Pack to the Alliance. They might have totally different rules.” She pointed out. She lifted a forepaw, then took a step towards the gorge, staring intently at the stream.

“If we howl for Maeve and she comes, then there’ll be three of us.” She pointed out. “And I suppose if she’s… trapped somewhere, we’ll have an idea of where.”

To her the landscape looked pretty uncomplicated though. There were really only two ways to go, up or down the gorge.

Tita hadn’t realised her words were maybe a bit too blunt, and she still didn’t realise. “Isn’t that kind of the same thing?” she replied casually. “I’m just saying it’d be kind of impossible to fool anyone with.” Her ears pulled back gently as a result of Maaike’s scowl and protest, before her sister spoke again.

“That’s true.” Maaike made a good point about the fact that the Rangers could be very different to the Alliance. She then nodded. Howling it was.

Not wasting a moment, Tita lifted her head in the air, letting out a howl. Once she was done, she looked to her sister. Her muscles had tightened some underneath her dark plush coat. “If there’s a lot of them and they come at us, we should run and get the others—if we can—ok?”

She made a point of sounding logical, because she didn’t want Maaike to think she was scared. Because… she wasn’t. Fighting didn’t scare her—probably because she’d never actually been in a real fight. She just thought it’d be smarter to get the others.

Tita sure hoped they were nice like Kaete, and hadn’t been the pack that attacked Abrielle.

Maaike wanted to argue that a cover story was different to a lie but she didn’t quite have the words to explain how, but she was somewhat mollified when her sister agreed that the rules could well be different here. A moment later Tita was howling. Maaike lifted her muzzle and joined in, so there would be no mistaking it. If Maeve was here, she would know the pair of them had come for her.

She nodded at that. “Good idea. Oh, why don’t we say we’re friends of Kaete’s?” She suggested, even though technically, only Tita had met her. “That might calm them down. If they’re the bad pack. I mean, the boys said they were nice…” But Maaike wasn’t sure. Abrielle knew so much. But she could have meant the other beach pack.

Nervously, Maaike’s hackles bristled a bit.

Smart thinking, Maaike. “That’s true. Let’s mention that,” Tita nodded.

The boys had said they were nice indeed, but Tita couldn’t be sure until she met this pack and asked them about… being… murderers.

Pharaoh was head back to the gorge after spending the morning hunting. He was a little disgusted that he had only managed to catch one rabbit, but he was tired and heading for home, hoping to spend some time with his mate and his sisters.

He heard the howling, and, not recognizing the voices he let out a few fur-muffled barks to let the owners know he had heard and was on his way.

((Arriving next round!))

Maaike’s ears shot upright. “I think that was somebody barking!” She told Tita rather urgently. The owner of the voice had been a boy, and so clearly, not Maeve. Maaike’s tail tucked, a bit disappointed. “Somebody’s coming! Be ready!”

Ready for what she wasn’t quite sure, but hot damn, she would be ready!

Hm. A male.

“What’re you tucking your tail for?” Tita asked, backing up a bit and looking at Maaike. “Stand up, so he knows not to mess with us!” she instructed lightly.

Pharaoh could only just overhear the last few words. Who was messing with who now? Well, only one way to find out. Always polite, he set his rabbit down on top of a rock before speaking, looking up the slope of the gorge to where he could see two girls. Both young, one more solid and one more slender, closer to his own build. Certainly nothing that struck Pharaoh as anyone to be worried about, and he waved his tail and dipped his head in proper fashion.

“Good morning, Ladies!” He called up pleasantly. “What brings you to Wavehaven Gorge?”

The first thing that stuck Maaike as the black and gold male appeared and greeted them, was that Mum would have approved of his manners. Even if he did speak a bit like Akeito’s Da with that same sort of accent. Oh no, now Tita probably wouldn’t like him because of that!

She obediently straightened up and untucked her tail, wishing she could explain to Tita how much she’d been hoping Maeve would answer their call.

“Hi.” She called down, restraining her usual exuberant greeting. “We came here looking for somebody actually.” She looked at Tita for backup. Mention Kaete? Tita knew her so she ought to handle that part.

The stranger came, dropping a rabbit before talking. Good thing he was alone, in case it turned out he was also going to try and murder them.

Ladies. Hmph.

Her fur was gently fluffed up, and Tita looked at Maaike as she talked, before she turned to the stranger. “Yeah,” she said, voice somewhat firm. “We know she’s here.” No use lying, Mister.

Tita’s expression wasn’t hard but it did hold a degree of skepticism.

Goodness gracious, the manners of youth today! Pharaoh’ nose twitched, picking up the scent of Stormborn Alliance. Come to think of it, these pair were around the same age as his two young gentleman friends Demetrius and Oberon. And the rude female awfully similar in appearance to the latter.

“Well, helping lost wolves is certainly one of the tasks of this pack.” He replied, coming no closer. Maybe the dark girl would settle down upon learning there was an entire pack here. “But I would likely be better able to give aid if you told me who you were seeking, and your own names? I am Pharaoh Proleator.” A little give and take, perhaps?

Helping lost wolves?

That certainly didn’t sound like… somebody who had kidnapped her sister. She tilted her head, not certain though. Tita didn’t seem to like him very much, so Maaike kept her usual friendliness checked. He could be lying, like the male who had stuttered about the borders when he came after Tyra.

“We’re looking for our sister Maeve. I think we ought to talk to your leader, not some hunter. His name’s Bucky, right?” She drew herself up as she said it, trying to sound firm like Tita, not caring if the male thought she was rude.

This was important. She glanced sideways at Tita after she insisted on this, seeing if she agreed with her.
